2016 VETERANS

In memory of Grace Shiles I would like to express my gratitude to my dear friend that passed, Grace Shiles, 97. Grace was a true blessing to me, we talked with each other almost every month since the day I started the Veterans Section in 2011. I come from a family of a few Veterans my dad is Edward Littlehead Jr., Army, Step-dad Paul Wolf, Army, Father-N-Law James “Bones” Walker, Army and Uncle Levi F. Coody, Marines. It was only recently I became part of the Sac & Fox Lady Auxiliary and helped with our Honor guard. Grace comes from a long list of Veterans which she was very proud and made sure we acknowledged them. Her goal was to serve her veterans like they served us. If you didn’t know Grace and you’re a veteran in a local store and she saw your army patch or division she would’ve stopped you and told you to come see me at the Shawnee News-Star and take a picture. When you see WWII or WWI Veterans within these publications they were mostly collected by Grace Shiles and Kate Joyce at the Shawnee Senior Center. Grace also led the program Cool Collar Crew, Adopt-A-Unit program at the Shawnee Senior Center. To all the Veterans reading this I would like to say and I know Grace Shiles would like to say “Thank you for your service, and we know our lives are free because of your service and dedication to our country.” Below is a comment Grace sent in for the Letter to the Editor and I will make sure to carry this on to the next generation. I will miss Grace Shiles, but I know I was graced with presence of a wonderful women “Thank You”.

“Are you a Vetera n?” was Grace Sh iles’ familiar introduct ion of herself to str angers she meets for the first time. If so, you w ere sent to the News Star to ask for Christina W alker so she can take your picture for the Ve te rans Day Circular. Grace loved this country but her tr ue love was for God, her family and the so ldiers who served to keep th e United States fre e. She loved sharing her cause of gatherin g donations to ship to soldiers serving in Iraq an d Afghanistan. Everything was made with lo ve. Cotton “cool collars” and hand knitted “bal aclavas” (which were simila r to ski masks) al l sent over a period of seven years. Grace Shiles is a woman whose pr esence made our comm unity a warmer pl ace in which to live. If you wer e a Veteran, even moreso! We miss her. Kate M. Joyce, Ex ecutive Director Shawnee Senior C enter

I think Christina Walker deserves a big pat and a job well done for putting together the veteran’s supplement in the Dec. 18 newspaper. I had several men come to me and tell me how much they appreciate The Shawnee News-Star for honoring them. It wouldn’t surprise me to know that most had never received any thanks for their service. I also say ‘Thank you.’ Grace T. Shiles Shawnee, 2011

Worst Shark attack in U.S. History The sinking of the USS Indianapolis It was two direct hits from Sub I-58 that sank the poor Indianapolis that night to her fate. With twelve minutes of spewing oil and thunder, she rose up and rolled, then quickly went under. Of twelve hundred men, three quarters alive floated in groups and prayed they would survive. Oil coated their bodies, salt burned their eyes, and the Pacific’s calm night rang with anguished cries. From dawn of the first day, to the time it went dark, there were sudden attacks by hundreds of sharks. Some men drank the ocean and soon went insane Then sunrise next morning, the sharks came back again. When four days had passed since the ship had gone down some taken by sharks, some had just drowned, Living souls floated with those that were dead, and by chance, a lone pilot flew high overhead. Salvation arrived when the fifth day had come. Now blinded and blistered by salt and by sun, of nine hundred men who at first had survived, only three hundred were found still alive. It was 1968 when I heard of their fate, and listened to the story of the survival at sea, but when I saw his tears I was all ears and knew I would remember the story for eternity. In Memory of our friend Homer J. Costner 1918-1979 Hershall Clark (USS Severn) Sherri Reed

Farmers Launches Suits for Soldiers Campaign Supporting our veterans and current service members is important to Farmers. They've been serving our country and they've given so much to defend our values and freedom. We recognize their skills and what they can bring to the workforce; they have proven leadership skills and they're used to getting the job done. This week Farmers launched a nationwide Suits for Soldiers initiative at its Woodland Hills, Calif., Home Office with local agents and district managers as well as close to 1,000 employees in attendance. In introducing the initiative, which was successfully piloted in our Eastern states last year, Luisa Acosta-Franco, Head of Recruitment Marketing and Field Support, said, "What we do best at Farmers is give back to the community where we live and work. I can't think of a better community than our men and women transitioning from the military.” Added Chief Executive Officer Jeff Dailey, "As an insurance company, giving back is at the core of everything we do," said Dailey. "It's only fitting that the military is part of that since they are insuring all of our lives." Dailey was then presented several recognitions, on behalf of the entire Farmers organization, from the Los Angeles mayor's office and the Woodland Hills local district office. Deputy Mayor Jeff Gorell, a Navy veteran, presented Dailey with a Certificate of Recognition and

Assembly member Matt Dababneh of the 45th District of Los Angeles presented a State of California Proclamation acknowledging the Suits for Soldiers initiative. Russell Lee, Vice President Territory Product Lead for Texas expressed how important the needs are for a transitioning veteran. "It is a daunting task transitioning to civilian life after a career in the military. This program allows one less thing to worry about for veterans making their transition to civilian life and work." Acosta-Franco wrapped up the event with closing remarks and a quote from founder John Tyler. "The measure of our worth is not what we have done for ourselves but what we have done for others."

Jones Family

Brothers and Sister

Farmers has a longstanding commitment to helping the military with both founders Thomas Leavey and John Tyler as veterans serving in World War I. The official nationwide launch of the Suits for Soldiers program will help active duty military personnel transition to civilian work and life. The suit collection goal of 50,000 suits will run now through November 30. If you would like to donate to this campaign, you can drop donations off at The Michael Cappo Agency at 100 W. 9th, Suite A – the corner of 9th and Beard, Downtown Shawnee. For more information, you can call their office at (405) 273-0110. Major Carl M. Clark, USAAC; 1918-2002 (Top Row Left)
