BARREL RACING POLE BENDING BREAKAWAY ROPING This is Teamwork. Barrel racing is a timed event, a race teaming up a cowgirl and her horse for a jolting, heart-stopping race with three turns. The cowgirl can turn either the right or left barrel first, and then must run a cloverleaf pattern around the second and third barrels as fast as possible and cross the timer line. Tipping or touching a barrel is permitted; however, knocking a barrel to the ground adds a five-second penalty to a contestant’s time.
ELIZABETH BROUSSARD ESTHERWOOD, LOUISIANA Elizabeth competed at IFYR all 4 years trying for a win in barrel racing. She earned the championship from a pool of 240 competitors. “This was my first year to make the short go,” said Elizabeth who has been attending IFYR since she was 12. This is her family’s 15th year coming to the IFYR. She took the championship on her horse Brand Me Lucky that she calls the most unlucky horse she’s ever had, though she knew he was the one she could win on. Elizabeth also competed in pole bending and breakaway roping.
There’s No Speed Limit. Another test of speed for cowgirls is in pole bending. Timing and agility are key for both the cowgirl and her horse. Six, six-foot-tall poles sit on top of the ground in a straight line, 21 feet apart and 21 feet from the starting line. The cowgirl can choose to start on either the right or left side of the poles and must weave through the poles down and back, then race back to the timer line. Touching a pole is permitted; however, a five-second penalty is added to a cowgirl’s time for each pole knocked over and a broken pattern causes a no-time.
Focused and Fearless. Cowgirl’s breakaway roping combines speed, skill and focused precision. The timer starts when the cowgirl crosses the barrier line, allowing the calf to get a head start out of the chute. The rider must rope the head of the calf while the calf runs until it meets the end of the rope. The time stops when the flag judge drops his flag after the calf hits the end of the rope, which is tied to the saddle horn with a thin piece of string, and pops it loose. Watch closely, this event happens fast!
BROOKLYN GUNTER SULPHUR, LOUISIANA Brooklyn is a back-to-back pole bending champion at the IFYR. She secured the 2017 pole bending championship with a time of 19.9 seconds on her trusty horse Blaze, who has carried her through the two previous IFYR championships as well as a National High School Finals championship. She holds the record for the fastest run at IFYR with a time of 19.3 seconds, as well as the fastest average time. Brooklyn is coming back for IFYR 2018 to defend her title.
WINTER WILLIAMS COPAN, OKLAHOMA Winter, a 2016 youth director, has competed at IFYR for all four years of high school, finally getting a championship last year. Though she came into the short round in 7th place, she knew she had to go for it. She went all in with a goal of tying the 1.8 second record and posted a time of 1.5 seconds. Winter is now attending Southwestern Oklahoma State University on a rodeo scholarship.

GOAT TYING
THE SHAWNEE NEWS-STAR • 2018 IFYR PREVIEW
TEAM ROPING
Throw Those Hands in the Air. Cowgirls showcase their all in less than 10 seconds on a goat-tying run! The time starts when the cowgirl and her horse run across the timer line headed to the goat staked at the end of the arena on a long rope. The cowgirl leaps from her running horse, runs to the goat, throws him and ties three legs together with her piggin’ or goat string. The goat must stay tied six seconds after the cowgirl has completed her tie and cleared the goat, throwing her hands in the air.

Saturday, June 30, 2018 • 19 Together as One. A team made of a header and a heeler work together to rope a steer and post the fastest time. The time begins when the header crosses the barrier line that allows the steer a head start out of the chute. The header must rope the steer with a legal head catch and turn him off 90 degrees before the heeler throws his heel loop. The team must face each other and their ropes drawn taut before the flag judge will drop the flag. If only one hind leg is roped, the team is given a five-second penalty; if the barrier is broken a 10-second penalty is also added to the team’s time.
Kirby and Garett have been roping together since the 6th grade, and they practice together three times a week. They placed in two rounds last year and won the average. Garett has been roping since he was 9 and met his roping partner through family. This was Garett’s third trip to the IFYR and he plans to keep roping and try to make a living rodeoing. The competition was fierce at the 2017 IFYR.
KIRBY BLANKENSHIP LAMPASAS, TEXAS HEELER
BEAU PETERSON COUNCIL GROVE, KANSAS Beau is an all-around sportswoman, competing in barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway roping and goat tying. She cinched the goat tying championship during her first trip to the IFYR on her 20-year-old gelding, Zanny. “He’s done it all,” said Beau. “He is the most honest goat horse that I’ve ever owned. He does his job every time.” She will be attending Oklahoma Panhandle State University where she will study nursing while continuing to rodeo.
GARETT CHICK SALADO, TEXAS HEADER
“This is a good rodeo, probably the toughest one,” said Garett. “There are lots of good teams from all around.” Kirby also competed at IFYR for 3 years. After high school, Kirby went on to Weatherford Junior College in Texas. “They have a great rodeo team and everybody around there ropes,” said Kirby. Kirby is always working to better his craft and invests his earnings in horses and tools to make him a better roper.

TIE-DOWN ROPING Roping to Win. Tie-down roping is a highly-competitive event, evolved from daily ranch work and requiring near-perfect timing. The run begins when the cowboy nods, calling for his calf. The calf races out, getting a head start on the highly-skilled team of roping horse and cowboy. The barrier is released and horse and rider race toward the calf, the cowboy quickly throws the rope, dismounts his horse in mid-stop and runs to the calf. The horse and calf stop and the cowboy flips the calf onto its side, ties three legs together with his piggin’ string, calls time and the clock stops.

STEER SADDLE BRONC RIDING WRESTLING Round ‘Em Up. Cowboys require strength, agility and timing in this race against both time and the elusive steer. The cowboy is allowed to have a helper, referred to as a hazer, to keep the steer straight. Both the cowboy and hazer are horseback, the steer is let out of the chute getting a head start, the barrier is released and the cowboy and hazer run up on the steer. The cowboy bails from his horse and grabs the steer’s horns. He then uses his legs to slide the steer to a stop and quickly throw the steer to the ground with all four legs pointing in the same direction. Once complete, the timer stops. A 10-second penalty is added to the time for a broken barrier.
Hold on Tight. Watch the cowboys hold on tight to the bronc reins while the bronc sprints into spins and bucks wildly, attempting to buck the rider off. The cowboy starts the ride with his spurs on the points of the bronc’s shoulders, and must maintain this position in order to avoid disqualification. Broncs are strong, and keeping a grip while maintaining a rhythm for the ride makes for a test of strength, balance and talent. The cowboy’s spurring action is key to a high score from the judges. Those 8-seconds sure seem much longer!

Ben Piazza won the tie down roping championship on his first ever trip to IFYR. He also competed in team roping.
This was Chase’s fourth year attending IFYR and his first win in steer wrestling. He competed in team roping, tie down roping and steer wrestling at IFYR 2017. He and his partner came in second in the team roping.
“This was my last year, so I thought I would try it,” said Ben. He first started roping when he was 10 because his dad roped, and he was always around it. Ben is attending Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College and continues roping.
“I try not to pay attention to the placing, I just go at it like I did all week,” said Chase. Chase is attending Pear River Community College to work towards being a civil engineer, and he plans to rodeo professionally as soon as he’s finished with school.
In his first trip to the IFYR, Stetson competed in saddle bronc and bull riding. He rode saddle broncs twice and earned his spot in the short go. He knew he had the bronc riding won. “I was the only one to ride three,” said Stetson. Riding broncs is in Stetson’s blood. His dad is the 2008 and 2010 Saddle Bronc World Champion, and his brothers, sisters and uncles all compete too. He started bull riding when he was 9 and started getting on big bulls as a freshman in high school. He was the only champion to win more than one event last year, not to mention All Around Cowboy. He’ll be back this year to defend his titles, and now that he has graduated high school he plans to go compete in rodeo professionally full time.

BAREBACK BULL RIDING BRONC RIDING Wranglin’ Rough Stock. Bareback bronc riding is another of the rough stock events. Similar to saddle bronc riding, but missing one seemingly necessary element, the saddle! The cowboy holds on to a leather handle rigging with one hand, leaning back and beginning his ride with his spurs on the point of the bronc’s shoulders. The cowboy must ride for 8 seconds and his spurring action helps the judges determine a score.
Trust in Ability. All rodeo events require courage and ability, and those climbing onto a 2,000 lb. rodeo bull under the big lights aren’t short on either quality. Bull riding is the most dangerous 8-seconds in rodeo, requiring cowboys to grip with one hand, while not touching the bull with their free hand, all while being taken for the ride of a lifetime. Riders are disqualified for touching or slapping the bull with their free hand, and earn 1-25 points from two judges based on their ride and the bull’s performance. Riders are not required to spur their bulls as in other rough stock events, but will score higher if they do.

He has been riding since he was 8 years old and competed three years at IFYR. Jesse is currently attending Missouri Valley College and competing in pro rodeo events. “I want to be somebody that kids can look up to and be an example of how to be successful as a rodeo cowboy,” said Jesse.
He started bull riding when he was 9 and started getting on big bulls as a freshman in high school. He was the only champion to win more than one event last year, not to mention All Around Cowboy.
