Tecumseh Salutatorian Gage Boatman

Caleb Yancey

By Elisabeth Slay | (405) 214-3926 | eslay@news-star. com | Twitter: @ElisabethSlay

Graduating Tecumseh High School senior and 17-year-old Gage Boatman earned the title of salutatorian and is happy with the success of his final semester even though it wasn't what he was expecting. According to the graduate, this semester was challenging and it was difficult missing functions like prom. "There’s some things I’ll be upset I missed but it is what it is," Boatman said. For Boatman, the biggest challenge this semester has been keeping up with graduation information and aspects of his collegiate career. However, Boatman said though he will always remember the chaos of his last semester, he's grateful he can do what he loves most in college. "I am most grateful that I still was presented the opportunity to play at the next level without a senior year of baseball," Boatman said. After he graduates, Boatman said he will be attending East Central University. "I will be attending ECU to continue my athletic career as well as getting my degree in Business Administration," Boatman said.

Tecumseh Valedictorian Jacey Cox

By Elisabeth Slay | (405) 214-3926 | eslay@ news-star.com | Twitter: @ElisabethSlay

Tecumseh High School senior and 18-year-old Jacey Ranae Cox earned the title of valedictorian and is one of many in the 2020 graduating class. According to Cox, she was happy when she found out she would be the class of 2020 valedictorian. "It is fulfilling to accomplish something that I have been working so hard to achieve for the last four years," Cox said. While she was happy to be at the top of her class, Cox said she was disappointed with how the remainder of her senior year went, but she successfully completed her classes. "It (was) disheartening to not be able to finish my school year with my classmates or finish my last track season with my team," Cox said. "It's understandable given our current circumstances, regarding the health and safety of everyone. I prefer being in the classroom face-to-face, but my online classes (went) really well." For Cox, she said one of the biggest challenges during her last semester was not having the opportunity to celebrate with her fellow graduates.

"Not being able to experience the last senior moments of celebration with my friends before we all go our separate ways (is difficult)," Cox said. The graduate said she will always remember her senior year not only because of COVID-19, but also because of the good times. "The pandemic will be a significant part of my senior year memories, but I will also remember the fun I had with my cross country teammates, football games and pep assemblies and the fun times we had in AP Senior English," Cox said. Cox said she's grateful to her family and teachers for making her last semester as easy and fun as they could. "I am thankful for how much time and effort my teachers invested to make distance learning go so smoothly for me and my classmates," Cox said. "I am also thankful for the extra time I have got to spend with my family." The graduate said she plans on attending the University of Miami in the fall to pursue a degree in Marine Biology.

To the Asher seniors of 2020, I know this is not how you had planned your senior year. It was definitely not how I had planned this as senior sponsor for you all. Who knew that spring break would turn into summer break? However, you all have made us proud on how you have handled this spring. You all have survived the heartbreak of having baseball, softball, livestock shows and robotics cancelled, no prom, no athletic banquets, and graduation ceremony postponed. My advice for you is to learn from this life lesson, and you have a choice in how you react to this disappointment. First choice is that you let this define your life and stay disappointed or you can choose to remember the good times. Throughout your life, there will be all kinds of disappointments, hurts, and heartbreaks. On the other hand, there will be so many better times than bad. Choose to focus on the good instead of the bad, forgive quickly not because they deserve it, but because you need to in order to heal yourself. Always remember the times that you have laughed

so hard you could not breathe, focus on the good times. One more piece of advice I would like to give you is to find your passion. You are made to do a certain thing in your life. For some of you that will mean that you will have to earn a degree, for some you will be a stay at home parent, and some of you will learn a trade. Remember, there is nothing wrong with making a living with a hardhat. I will miss all of you, very proud of every one of you. Remember I am always here for you. Dwayne Forrester

Bethel Valedictorian Emily Brock By Elisabeth Slay | (405) 214-3926 | eslay@ news-star.com | @ElisabethSlay Graduating Bethel High School senior Emily Brock earned the title of valedictorian and though it was hard for her to miss the last semester of her senior year, she appreciates her family, friends and teachers for helping her power through. The 18-year-old said while her senior year wasn't what she expected, one of her greatest accomplishments was becoming a valedictorian. "It feels so rewarding to make my family proud. I’ve worked really hard the last four years to achieve this," Brock said. "The opportunity to address my class and say goodbye is exciting although I’m sure I’ll be nervous when that day comes." For Brock, she said the most challenging aspect of her last semester was being away from her friends and teachers.

appreciate that they have molded you into the young men and women you have become. It has been my pleasure over the last four years to get to know you and watch you grow. This pandemic has changed the ending of this chapter that you had envisioned for so long, but for the class of 2020 you will forever be known as the senior skip day champions. I would like to leave you with this quote from Henry David Thoureau: “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams and live the life you have imagined.”

You are nearing the end. You have made it through the four years you never thought would end. You have endured the last class and learned the last material that you just knew you would never need again. You have survived the dress code, the early Saturday morning attendance recovery days, the late night cramming and the multiple extracurricular activities that have made your high school days ones that you will always carry with you. You have survived the drama you thought would surely ruin your life as well as the heartbreak that made you not want to walk these halls again. Those moments are almost gone. You will never be a Macomb student again. The next time you enter these doors it will be as an alumni. I hope that you can look back on the days you have spent here, both good and bad, and

Sincerely, Steve Martin Principal Macomb Schools

program next year. During high school, Alex played basketball and was the high school Basketball captain. He was also the 20192020 Homecoming King. Alex is currently employed at Lowe’s in Shawnee. Gavin Levi Springer – Gavin is the son of Latasha and Billy Lewis. He played baseball and basketball while at Macomb and was a member of the Macomb FFA skeet team. He also worked in the afterschool program. Gavin also is graduating from Gordon Cooper with a certification in carpentry. Grant Thomas French – Grant is the son

of Daniel and Starla French. Grant has completed the electrical careers program at Gordon Cooper Vo-tech and plans to work at Shawnee Electric until college starts at OSU Okmulgee where he plans to complete the High Voltage program. He’s hoping to work at Canadian Valley Electric after he completes that program. Coltt Everet Williams – Coltt is the son of Jesse Williams. He loves music, sports, and computer sciences. Coltt plans on going into the U.S. Army June 26th. Coltt plans to do IT support after the military.

Bethel Valedictorian Hudson Haskins "Not having personal contact was the hardest. I couldn’t hug my friends on a bad day or have thorough class discussion when I was trying to comprehend a piece of material," Brock said. While her last semester wasn't what she thought, Brock said the first semester of her senior year was everything she wanted. "Senior year was a blast. My classmates spent a lot of time together knowing that the end was near. We went to all the football and basketball games and all out for homecoming," Brock said. After graduation, Brock said she plans on attending Oklahoma Baptist University and majoring in communications.

The Best Is Yet to Come

By Elisabeth Slay | (405) 214-3926 | eslay@ news-star.com | @ElisabethSlay Bethel High School graduate and 18-yearold Hudson Haskins earned a title of valedictorian and though his last semester was challenging, he's thankful to his classmates and teachers. The graduate said the most difficult aspect of his final semester was not seeing his friends and classmates one last time. "The most challenging part of this semester was accepting that I would not get to sit in class one final time with students I have attended school with since PreK, nor with teachers I have had through most of high school," Haskins said. He's most grateful to his family, friends and teachers at Bethel who helped make his senior as memorable and normal as possible. "I am most grateful for our teachers and administration, who have continually worked with kindness and compassion to make these abnormal times feel slightly more normal," Haskins said. After high school, Haskins said he will attend The University of Oklahoma to earn an MD and he hopes to help his community in the future.

At Dale, he has participated in both concert and jazz band, academic bowl, drama and the Dale Salon and Public Discourse Club. Outside of Dale, he has been a part of ensembles such as the OBU and Shawnee community orchestra and the Oklahoma Youth Jazz Ensemble. Thompson has participated in the Shawnee Little Theatre, and he attends Heritage Church. He plans on attending OBU to major in history education and then plans on going to seminary to pastor in a local church. He is one of this year’s honorary speakers. Like Thompson, Cesar Ramirez’s high school career was full of different experiences. He received the STEM Standout Student of the Semester, National Honor Society and the Vice President position. He was in basketball, soccer, the academic bowl team, and yearbook. Ramirez spent summers and holidays working for his father’s liner manufacturing company, Fabseal, learning different skills necessary for operating a business. He intends to earn a degree from The University of Oklahoma in industrial engineering, get an MBA, and eventually move to entrepreneurship, specializing in bringing innovative technology to industries and businesses with room for development. Similar to Ramirez, Garrett Smith was involved in various activities in high school including: band, jazz band, pep band, academic bowl, science bowl, student council and founded his own club: Salon and Public Discourse. During this time, Smith was honored to be named an OSSBDA AllState Percussionist, and a member of both National and Oklahoma Honor Society. In the fall, he will be attending Washington University in St. Louis and majoring in psychology. Eventually, Smith would like to get a PhD and begin private research or practice. Ben Payne’s high school career was something he’ll remember and cherish forever. He spent 11 years at Dale, and during that time, he was involved in FCA, basketball, yearbook, academic bowl, NHS, RTI and Salon. Upon graduating, Payne will attend Oklahoma Baptist University, and plans to major and earn a degree in English Education with the hopes of becoming a high school English teach-

er one day. He would love to teach AP Literature, yearbook, Film as Literature and drama in high school and then eventually move up to the collegiate level and find a teaching position there. Alejandro Pina Zuniga was involved in a few different activities during high school and maintained perfect attendance. He completed basic training at Fort Jackson before the start of senior year. Zuniga spent his middle and high school career in band. He hopes to complete the remainder of his military training and push forward to college. Like some of her classmates Lindy Nowakowski has been at Dale all of her life. Lindy is the daughter of Jacob and Penny Nowakowski. She’s played basketball at Dale or for Dale since first grade. She feels it has truly been great being a part of a school and a team with so much tradition. She has a scholarship to play basketball at East Central University, where she plans to study physical therapy and get a degree in Kinesiology. Jacie McClure played basketball throughout high school and she has maintained a 4.06 GPA and has been involved in Varsity Basketball, FCA, Student Council, NHS and OHS. She was selected as an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Scholar, Tulsa University Academic Scholar and Rose State Student Success Scholar. She plans on going to Rose State College and majoring in Business Administration and then on to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida to pursue a degree in Aviation Business Administration. Much like her peers, Victoria Appleton achieved quite a bit in high school. Her achievements include admission into National, Oklahoma, and National Technical Honor Societies. Her activities included FCCLA membership and competition. She plans to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University and earn at least a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. Afterward, she plans to become a preschool through third grade public school teacher.

or ratings at both district and state contests as a part of the band and as a French horn player. Hawkins has auditioned for and made many honor bands since middle school, which include the ECOBDA, OBU and Small School All-State honor bands. Kyla plans to join the Air Force and attend their academy to earn a degree in either marine biology or ecology. Like his fellow graduates, Tanner Collins was a member of National Honor Society and Oklahoma Honor Society. In addition to his education at

Dale, Collins also attended two years at Gordon Cooper Technology Center in the Pre-Engineering Academy. He was mainly involved with Varsity Baseball, receiving three state runner-ups and winning the 2019 Class A Fall State Championship. Tanner’s other involvements include Student Council, Faith Christian Athletes and the BancFirst Student Board of Directors. He will be furthering his academic and athletic career at East Central University by playing baseball and participating in the Honors Program.

Shawnee High School graduate and 17-year-old Emily Day said the last semester of her senior year was extremely eye-opening and humbling. "As a senior who was not able to attend school and participated in distance learning, my experience gave me an entire new perspective," Day said. "It was different to say the least, and sad at times, but I gained so much perspective on what really matters in life and what doesn’t." The graduate said the biggest hardship she faced this year was not being able to truly end the last year of her high school career. "The most challenging aspect of this semester has been the lack of closure I have felt," Day said. "As a very sentimental person, it was extremely difficult for me to not experience the lasts I had looked forward to for years as I had envisioned they would happen." Day said she will always remember how she was able to serve her fellow seniors and worked hard to give them a special ending to their last year. "I have been working with a small team of seniors and with our superintendent, Dr. April Grace, to make the senior’s end of the year as special as it can be," Day said. "I had the idea to spotlight every senior on the school’s social media, and the faculty made that happen. I started a senior service initiative, using the hashtag #shsseniorservice, to volunteer to pass out meals for the school district. Finding new ways to serve my community and love on people during the hard times is what I will cherish most." Day said she's thankful and always will be to both Shawnee Public Schools and the community for being so helpful to the class of 2020. "I have never seen a class go through so much, and I have never seen a community and school district love on a class so well," Day said. "My heart bursts with joy at the thought of all of the loops our administration and teachers have jumped through for us." In the fall, Day said she will attend Oklahoma Baptist University to major in Vocal Music Education. "I am very thankful for the influence Justin Lee has had on my life through the choral program at the high school," Day said. "I am a four year vocal AllStater, and have found my calling through this program. I couldn’t be more thankful for my district’s support of the arts."

Shawnee High School graduate and 17-year-old Kaitlin Koons is one of several students in the graduating class of 2020 who did not have the ideal final year of high school. "The second semester of my senior year was unlike anything any senior has ever experienced or probably ever will," Koons said. "The hardest part for me not attending school was not getting to see my teachers because I have formed such special relationships with them." Koons said another difficult part of her senior year was not being able to celebrate and see friends and classmates. "The hardest part has been missing out on the most iconic moments of your senior year that happen in the last nine weeks of school," Koons said. "It has also been hard coming to terms with the fact that some goodbyes with school friends and past teachers would never happen." The graduate explained while she didn't get to attend her prom, she took pictures in her dress so she could cherish the memory. For Koons, she said the most memorable things about her senior year are the relationships she's formed and the memories she's made. "I will remember the relationships I formed and made stronger with friends and teachers and the incredible moments I got to be a part of like our first HOWL philanthropy week and homecoming," Koons said. "After being let out, I will remember volunteering on the meal bus and planning a small yard sign sale for seniors where we ended up selling almost 300 signs." Overall, Koons said she appreciates her family, community and school for making her senior year as great as possible and getting her and her peers through the hard times. "I will remember how our seniors, community, administration and parents stepped up to provide us with unique opportunities," Koons said. "Through yard signs, chalking in front of the PAAC, volunteering on meal busses, parades and rescheduled graduations, I am grateful this is the district that loved us enough to truly show up." Koons said in the fall she will attend Oklahoma State University and major in Nutritional Sciences and pre-med.

Shawnee 2020 Graduate

Ashlyn Oliver

By Elisabeth Slay | (405) 214-3926 | eslay@news-star.com | Twitter: @ ElisabethSlay

Shawnee High School graduate and 19-year-old Ashlyn Oliver did not expect the last semester of her senior year to go as it did, but despite the hardships, she's grateful to her teachers and school for helping her make the most of things. "I will forever wonder what basketball state would have been like, how far we would have gone in baseball, the night of prom and what seniors were voted into the yearbook for funniest, most athletic and Mr. and Mrs. SHS," Oliver said. While Oliver is sad she didn't get to do all those things, she said she's happy for the moments she did get to have thanks to her teachers and community. "Over the last four years I grew closer with so many teachers and staff. The list would never end if I named all the teachers and staff who pushed me to be better," Oliver said. "Through COVID-19, I’ve seen so many beautiful things. I loved seeing the town come together and cheer on the teachers at the parade. The way communities have

come together is something I will always remember." However, Oliver said the greatest difficulty for her was all the things she missed. "The most challenging aspect has been accepting that my year is over. Seniors have to live with not traditionally saying our goodbyes to friends and teachers," Oliver said. Despite the challenges though, the graduate said she was still able to make great memories and had many joyful moments over the last year. "The good thing about life is that memories cannot be taken away from you," Oliver said. "Senior year brought so many great memories. I was able to help plan a new annual philanthropy event at the high school, HOWL WEEK (Helping Others With Love)." The graduate said helping with this event was her favorite memory as the students raised over $10,000 for the SHS Special Education students who were going to compete in the 2020 Special Olympics. Overall, Oliver said though it wasn't what she expected, she will always remember her senior year and in the fall she will be attending Oklahoma State University to major in interior design. "After college my plan is to come back to Shawnee. I have enjoyed seeing the change in Shawnee in the past years of growing up," Oliver said. Oliver would like to thank all of her teachers for believing in her and encouraging her to do great things.
