OKC ZOO’S LARGEST BOTANICAL EVENT, ZOO BLOOMS,
RETURNS WITH MORE FLORAL FIREWORKS Waves of flowering tulips provide perfect backdrop for nature and photography enthusiasts! The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden is a sight to behold with waves of vibrant tulips beginning to awake throughout the Zoo’s gardens. More than 100,000 tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, irises and hundreds of blooming trees and shrubs are showing their colors as part of ZOO BLOOMS, the OKC Zoo’s largest botanical event since its designation as an accredited living museum and botanical garden in 1998. Presented by Bob Moore Subaru, ZOO BLOOMS runs through Sunday, April 15, during regular Zoo hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. ZOO BLOOMS marks the start of the OKC Zoo’s spring season, and this year it coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Oklahoma City Zoo becoming accredited by the American Alliance of Museums as both a living museum and botanical garden. For 2018, the Zoo packed even more floral fireworks into guest-favorite spaces with additional seating options for the perfect family photo-ops. Our staff of zoological horticulturists, volunteers and an army of squirrels started planting our tulip bulbs last November when the ground
temperatures dropped to around 65. It took almost a full month to prepare the garden beds with soil amendments, plant each bulb at the proper depth and properly mulch the mass plantings. Each ZOO BLOOMS display was strategically planted in specific color combinations and patterns to complement the Zoo’s natural landscape and wow guests. Seeing the amazing benefits of this significant horticultural event spring to life promises to be a rewarding experience for all. Inspiration for this floral celebration came from vintage photographs and postcards of the Zoo’s first botanical collections in downtown Oklahoma City’s Wheeler Park where the OKC Zoo began in 1902. The Zoo was called the Wheeler Park Zoo, which was surrounded by beautiful, curated gardens that featured beds of tulips and other exotic blooms. Due to repeated floods, the Zoo and gardens moved in 1923 to its current location. Just as the original gardens inspired Oklahoma photographers over a century ago, today’s Zoo guests can capture the remarkable beauty of ZOO BLOOMS with images all their own. Unlike previous generations, however, Zoo guests in 2018 can post them to social media and tag them with #OKCZOO and #OKCZOOBLOOMS!
ZOO BLOOMS continues to grow thanks to the generous support of our sponsors including Bob Moore Subaru, Teleflora, Colorblends Wholesale Bulbs, the Oklahoman and ZOOfriends. ZOO BLOOMS is free to enjoy with paid Zoo admission. Go wild for ZOO BLOOMS this spring, we’re picture ready for you! Located at the crossroads of I-44 and I-35, the Zoo is a proud member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the American Alliance of Museums, Oklahoma City’s Adventure District and an Adventure Road partner. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Regular admission is $11 for adults and $8 for children ages 3-11 and seniors ages 65 and over. Children two and under are admitted free. Stay up-to-date with the Zoo on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and by visiting Our Stories. Zoo fans can support the OKC Zoo by becoming Oklahoma Zoological Society members at ZOOfriends.org or in-person at the Zoo! To learn more about ZOO BLOOMS and other happenings, call (405) 424-3344 or visit okczoo.org.

Five ways
to have fun this weekend
In theaters this weekend is “Isle of Dogs,” rated PG-13, a stop-motion animated film featuring an ensemble cast of voices (such as Edward Norton, Bryan Cranston and Frances McDormand) about a boy’s odyssey in search of his lost dog; “Sherlock Gnomes” a PG-rated animated film and sequel to 2011’s “Gnomeo & Juliet” follows the pair of garden gnomes as they recruit renowned detective Sherlock Gnomes to investigate the mysterious disappearance of other garden ornaments; “Pacific Rim Uprising,” rated PG-13, the sequel to 2013 hit sci-fi action film in which mankind once again uses gigantic humanoid mechas to battle colossal sea monsters; “Unsane” an R-rated psychological horror-thriller starring Claire Foy as a young woman who is involuntarily committed to a mental institution where she must determine if her delusions of a stalker may in fact be real.
2.
Look on the bright side: March is National Optimism Month. So act like an optimist. Use upbeat, optimistic words such as challenged rather than overwhelmed. Avoid pessimistic people who will only bring you down and be grateful for what you have.
3.
Earth Hour takes place Saturday. This is a time designed to get people and businesses to shut off as much electricity as they can for at least one hour. It’s held from 8:30-9:30 p.m. local time. Take the opportunity to save some energy (and some money!) and play some games by candlelight, or tell scary stories by flashlight. Go to <a href=”http://www. earthhour.org” >http://www.earthhour.org</a>/ for more information.
4.
March Madness isn’t over yet, although your favorite team probably got beat by an underdog. Sweet Sixteen games will still be taking place this Friday and the Elite Eight games are on Saturday and Sunday. Tune in to TBS and CBS to catch the games or go to the official website of the NCAA tournament, <a href=”http://www.ncaa.com/march-madness” >http://www.ncaa.com/march-madness</a>.

Sunday, March 25 is Vaffeldagen or Waffle Day, a Swedish tradition to indulge in baked waffles with jam and whipped cream. All you need is a hot iron and good batter. What makes a waffle different than a pancake? They’re crispier. — More Content Now

Camps are designed and taught by SMO’s museum educators. Pre-K and kindergarten camps for April 2-6 are: · April 2, Let’s Investigate: Ever wonder how a seed grows? · April 3, Let’s Get Messy: What does it take to make a reaction rocket? What about slime? Campers will explore the chemistry behind all the ewwy and gooey stuff.
· April 2, Take Flight: It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s all things that fly. Children will test their wings with the science of flight. Campers will explore reaction rockets, create an epic parachute and soar into outer space with a trip to the Kirkpatrick Planetarium.
· April 4, Time to Tinker: Let’s tinker ‘bout it! Children will make “moon sand” and explore drawing and Ozobots in SMO’s Tinkering Garage. · April 5, Let’s Go: How do boats float? How do airplanes fly? Campers will discover answers to these questions by creating their own.
· April 3, Captivating Chemistry: Why does chemistry matter so much? Campers will investigate the messy, sometimes smelly science of chemistry. Children will get down to the gross stuff with color-changing substances and explosive reactions big and small.
· April 6, Sudsy Fun: What is density? How does it work? How many different types of bubbles are there? Soap, gas, underwater — children will see them all.
· April 4, Tinkering: Tinkering is serious business — seriously fun business. Children will work with power tools, draw with their feet and harness the power of electricity. · April 5, Being Green: Go green! Campers will create a steam engine, build air-powered cars and peer through microscopes to see what is inside of plants and flowers. · April 6, Super Cool: Spring is starting to warm things up, but in this camp children will keep their cool.
