Turek’s Tavern Announces Re-opening – We’re Back! Choctaw, Oklahoma – Six short weeks after the Turek family heartbreakingly closed Old Germany Restaurant and Turek’s Tavern’s doors to the public, they announced today they will re-open the Tavern again for business June 14th at 9 am. Mike Turek, son of restaurant owner Christel Turek and operator of the restaurant and bar, said, ”The unbelievable happened. Good friends and customers Tylar and Kristin Colton contacted us and said, “You can’t close. What can we do to help?” The Colton’s have become minority investors in the Tavern and the Turek family will continue to be majority stockholders and involved in the daily operation of the bar. Turek was quick to note that Old Germany Restaurant will not be re-opened until renovations and menu changes are completed. “With changing tastes and styles, we came to realize it was time for the restaurant to close. Unfortunately, closing the restaurant meant (six weeks ago) that we would have to close the Tavern, too,” said Turek. “With our new partners, we’ll be able to make changes to the Restaurant and the sports bar section of the restau-

rant, “Turek’s Tavern” that will allow us to continue our fine 42-year tradition of serving the public.” Part of that change will involve expanding the tavern into the restaurant area. This will include taking down the main wall between the restaurant and bar and updating the restaurant space, making one large tavern with room for family dining and the bar, but still have two rooms of Old Germany that will remain “Old World German”. Turek notes the wine cellar will still be used for special occasions, meetings and events. Additional updates include a revamped menu, more in tune with contemporary tastes. “The days of large, expensive dinners are over, so we’re changing with the times,” said Turek. “The new menu will feature smaller portions of beloved traditional food, as well as a mix of new Tavern favorites. You’ll still be able to order schnitzel in all parts of the restaurant including “Turek’s Tavern” The most surprising part of the announcement is that Choctaw’s beloved Oktoberfest, an annual event that brought thousands of dollars and attendees to the

Eastern Oklahoma area, will be held again this year from August 30th to September 2nd. “The event was such a huge loss to Choctaw and to our state,” said Turek. “There was no way we could re-open without bringing back Oktoberfest!” Turek tearfully noted how much the family has appreciated the public support they received after Old Germany closed. “There were some dark days that we faced, but with the support of customers, family and friends, we made it through. On behalf of my entire family, thank you for being there for us. We’re back!” About Old Germany Restaurant - Established March 1, 1976 by Heinz and Christel Turek, Old Germany Restaurant and Turek’s Tavern has been serving authentic German fare for 42 years. Featuring favorites like mushroom Riesling soup, schnitzel and brats, along with the German motif and friendly staff, made Old Germany a mustgo to destination for dinner and drinks. Christel will continue to be part of the daily operation along with Mike and Jutta. Ein Prosit der Gemuetlichkeit!

Visit the Oklahoma City Zoo on Thursday, June 21, to participate in World Giraffe Day presented by Bob Moore Subaru. This worldwide celebration is an annual event initiated by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation to raise support, create awareness and bring attention to the challenges giraffes face in the wild. On June 21, Zoo guests will have an opportunity participate in event activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that focus on giraffe and habitat conservation. Talk with animal and conservation experts to learn what the Zoo is doing to protect giraffes and how you can also help: Become a ZOOfriends member. Money generated from membership sales is used to support the OKC Zoo’s legacy conservation partners, including Northern Rangelands Trust. Answer “Yes” when asked to Round Up for Conservation while making purchases at the OKC Zoo. Round Up funds were used to pay travel costs for Zoo staff to help with a census of reticulated giraffes in Kenya. Buy Northern Rangelands Trust jewelry sold in the Zoo’s Safari Gift Shop. These items are handmade by women in the conservancies who receive the proceeds. This diversifies family income, reducing reliance on livestock. In the last 30 years, wild giraffe populations have declined by 40 percent due to habitat destruction and poaching. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) recognized that giraffes were in need of conservation action and created the Giraffe SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) program in 2017. This year, the OKC Zoo joined 15 other AZA members to become a Giraffe SAFE partner. Giraffe SAFE partners commit to providing annual financial support for giraffe conservation programs in Africa and promote public awareness about the plight of wild giraffes. 1.

Five ways

to have fun this weekend

In theaters this weekend is the much-anticipated sequel, “Incredibles 2” Bob Parr/Mr. Incredible (voiced by Craig T. Nelson) is left to care for Jack-Jack while Helen/Elastigirl is out saving the world; “Tag” the R-rated comedy loosely based on a true story and featuring the talents of Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, Hannibal Buress, Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner as five highly competitive friends who risk it all one month out of every year for a no-holds-barred game of tag; and if you’re looking for action, check out “SuperFly” the rated R remake of the 1972 blaxploitation film about a career criminal who tries to get out of the Atlanta drug scene, only to have a bad deal put him in harm’s way.

2. The World Cup starts this weekend, with a full slate of games taking place until

July 15. The 21st edition of the world’s greatest football tournament starts on Thursday at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium with the match between the hosts and Saudi Arabia. Go to https://www.fifa.com/worldcup/ for schedules, news and more.

3. Father’s Day is Sunday and the weekend wouldn’t be complete with a cookout of some kind, so make sure to plan one. (But let him grill the meat — he knows how he likes it.) Plan the menu with his favorite foods, set up outside if it’s nice and enjoy your time together.

4. Summer officially begins next week (on Thursday, June 21), but get an early

start on celebrating the solstice with a picnic or other kind of party this weekend. If it’s supposed to be hot, make plans for a water-based event, and don’t forget the sun tea and lemonade for refreshment!

5. With kids out of school and probably looking for something to do, now is a good time to visit the library and/or a bookstore

and get them loaded up on good books. Reading helps keep kids learning, and it’s fun, too. Some of summer’s hottest children’s books right now are “Square,” “We Don’t Eat Our Classmates” and “Ocean Meets Sky.” Older kids and preteens might enjoy the appropriately titled “All Summer Long” as well as “Bob” or the finale in the story of the The Penderwick siblings, “The Penderwicks at Last.”
