Oklahoma History Center to Host Okietales in June and July Join the Oklahoma History Center for Okietales, a storytelling and craft time for children ages five to nine, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. each Wednesday in June and July, except July 3. Kids will listen to a story about Oklahoma, then make a related craft. The cost for Okietales is $4 for nonmembers and $2 for members. Sarah Dumas, director of education at the Oklahoma History Center, described this program as a reading and storytelling time that explores different topics of Oklahoma history. “The storyteller incorporates a literary work to broaden the child’s understanding of a particular period of history. This program has been extremely effective in entertaining the kids and teaching them the basic history of Oklahoma,” said Dumas. Dates for Okietales are June 12, 19, and 26 and July 10, 17, 24 and 31. The program will take place in the Oklahoma History Center Museum Store. DATE NIGHTS at the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden offer an unforgettable experience every Thursday evening in June (June 13, June 20 and June 27) from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Almost the entire Zoo will be open for couples 21 and older to explore together, enjoying the beautiful late spring and early summer Oklahoma sunsets with a multitude of activity options. Greenwood to present paintings in ECU’s Pogue Art Gallery ADA – Brent Greenwood, director of the Chickasaw Summer Art Academy, will present his work in the first of a series of annual exhibitions, entitled “Holisso Pisachi,” in the Pogue Art Gallery, located inside East Central University’s Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. The exhibit, with free admission, will go from June 6-Aug. 1 and will be available for viewing from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. It is located in room 169 of the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. It is the first summer exhibition in the Pogue Gallery since 2017. “Holisso Pisachi” is Chickasaw for teacher and the exhibit features a faculty member from the Chickasaw Summer Arts Academy. In addition to being director of the CSAA, Greenwood is a noted painter and is a member of the Chickasaw and Ponca Tribes. Born in 1971 in Midwest City, Greenwood received an associate’s degree in two-dimensional art from the Institute of American Indian Arts. “This experience not only had an impact on my life, but it definitely transformed my art. It was amazing,” said Greenwood. Greenwood went on to earn a bachelor of fine arts degree from Oklahoma City University. “Many native artists who have inspired me over the years include: Jerome Tiger, T.C. Cannon, Alan Houser, Fritz Scholder, Kevin Red Star and Bert Seaborn,” said Greenwood. “Others include: abstract expressionist Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso. “Van Gogh, Monet, Degas” Events Announced ----------- The Oklahoma City Museum of Art will host a series of tours, events and programming surrounding the blockbuster summer exhibition “Van Gogh, Monet, Degas: The Mellon Collection of French Art from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.” Highlights include Members’ Day on Friday, June 21, curator-led public tours throughout the exhibition, Studio Sunday “make-and-take” activities on select Sundays and an Aug. 14 public lecture by Dr. Katie Hanson, associate curator of paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. “We are thankful to Oklahoma Humanities for their generous support of our public lecture,” said Bryon Chambers, OKCMOA manager of tours and adult learning. “Dr. Hanson is one of the top scholars of Impressionist art in the country, and we are thrilled to present her free lecture to our community titled ‘In the Studio and en plein air: Impressionism Among Friends.’ We’re also looking forward to bringing back Studio Sundays.” Elizabeth Roewe, OKCMOA membership manager, added, “There has never been a better time to join the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Not only does membership grant you early access to this spectacular exhibition a day before it opens to the public, but members get free admission to the exhibition all summer long.” Featuring more than 70 works by French and European masters, this exhibition celebrates Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon’s extraordinary gift of 19th and early 20th-century French art to the VMFA. The exhibition reproduces the invigorating experience of the Mellons’ collection in a series of sections including Cyphers of Modernity, Horses, Flowers, Views of Paris, People, Water, Interiors and Tables, The French Countryside, The Transformation of the Ordinary and VMFA: Toward Impressionism. From June 22 to Sept. 22, the Museum will operate summer hours and will be open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. An exhibition catalogue from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will be available for purchase in the Museum Store. MONDAY, JUNE 17: PLANTING FOR POLLINATORS WORKSHOP AT THE OKC ZOO
Celebrate National Pollinator Week with the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden by learning what you can do to help pollinators from your own backyard! Monarch and other pollinator populations are declining drastically because of habitat loss and actions that compromise our native flora. Attend the OKC Zoo’s Planting for Pollinators workshop on Monday, June 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. to hear from Oklahoma County Extension Master Gardener experts about Oklahoma gardening that supports our pollinators. The presentation is being held in the Zoo’s Rosser Conservation Education Center auditorium and will be followed by a tour of the Zoo’s butterfly and pollinator habitat with the Zoo’s Horticultural Curator, Lance Swearengin. The Zoo maintains one of the largest monarch waystations in Oklahoma, which includes native nectar and milkweed plantings. This is the perfect time of year to participate in this special workshop. On June 21, World Giraffe Day, show your love for the longest-necked animal on the longest day of the year! Make plans to visit the Oklahoma City Zoo on Friday, June 21, to participate in World Giraffe Day, presented by Bob Moore Subaru. Initiated by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, this worldwide event raises awareness and support for giraffes which are listed as vulnerable in the wild. On World Giraffe Day, Zoo guests will enjoy a variety of event activities happening near the giraffe habitat from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meet our animal and conservation experts to learn more about what the Zoo is doing to protect giraffes and their habitat, and how you can help. Wild giraffe populations have declined over the last
30 years due to habitat destruction and poaching. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums recognized that giraffes were in need of conservation action and created the Giraffe SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) program in 2017. The OKC Zoo is proud to be a Giraffe SAFE partner committed to providing annual financial support for giraffe conservation programs in Africa and promote public awareness about the plight of wild giraffes. FRIDAY, JUNE 21: JOIN OKC ZOO, FASSLER HALL FOR DRAFTS FOR GIRAFFES
The Oklahoma City Zoo invites you to gather the herd and head to Fassler Hall for Drafts for Giraffes, an event benefiting giraffe conservation. On Friday, June 21, Fassler Hall (421 NW 10th Street, OKC) will donate 20% of all food and beverage sales from 5 p.m. through 9 p.m. in support of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, an international science-based conservation organization that provides innovative approaches to save giraffe in the wild. OKC Zoo animal and conservation experts will be in attendance to answer questions about giraffes and the conservation work being done to protect them. SATURDAY, JUNE 29: AMERICAN RED CROSS HOSTS BLOOD DRIVE AT THE OKC ZOO The American Red Cross of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma City Zoo are providing an opportunity for area residents to roll up a sleeve to save a life. The Red Cross will host a blood drive at the OKC Zoo’s Rosser Conservation Education Center on Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. As a thank you, those who come to donate will receive two vouchers good for admission to the OKC Zoo! Each voucher is good for one free admission ticket (adult, child or senior) to the Zoo. For additional information about donating blood and the requirements to give, visit www.redcrossblood.org.
