Pottawatomie County Health Department: Now is the Time to Vaccinate for School and Day Care
Getting all of the recommended vaccines is one of the most important things a parent can do to protect their child’s health, especially when they are in school or a day care center where disease outbreaks can occur. Whether it’s a baby starting at a new day care facility, a toddler heading to preschool, a student going back to elementary, middle or high school – or even a college freshman – parents should check their child’s immunization records. Child care facilities, schools and colleges are highly susceptible to outbreaks of infectious diseases. Children can easily transmit illnesses to one another due to poor hand washing, uncovered coughs, and close contact with many people. “When children aren’t vaccinated, they are at increased risk for disease and can spread disease to others in their classrooms and communities,” said Brenda Potts, Regional Administrative Director. “This includes babies too young to be fully vaccinated and people with weakened immune systems due to cancer or other health conditions.” The Pottawatomie County Health Department offers all required vaccines for school children and teens 18 years of age and younger by walk-in basis on Monday, Wednesday, & Thursday from 8:30-11:00 am & 1-3:00. These clinic times are subject to nurse availability and it is best to call before coming to the health department. Appointment times can be scheduled on Tuesdays. Please call 405-273-2157 for nurse availability and for appointments. Parents of children with private health insurance or SoonerCare health insurance are encouraged to take their children to their regular health care provider or clinic to receive these vaccines. Children attending day care facilities in Oklahoma must also be up-to-date for their age with childhood vaccines. The 2018-19 Guide to Immunization Requirements in Oklahoma for children in school or day care is available on the Oklahoma State Department of Health website at https://go.usa.gov/xUBvX Kindergarten Students Children entering kindergarten are due for boosters or second doses of four vaccines: • MMR (measles, mumps and rubella vaccine) • Polio • DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccines) • Varicella (Chicken Pox) The second dose of chickenpox vaccine is recommended, but not required by Oklahoma’s school law. Children who recently moved to Oklahoma may also need hepatitis A vaccination, which is required for students in all grades in Oklahoma. Students need at least one dose of hepatitis A vaccine to start school. A second dose is due six to 18 months later. Grades 7- 12 Students in grades 7-12 are required to have one dose of Tdap vaccine, which protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). This is necessary for adolescents and adults so they won’t contract whooping cough and infect babies and toddlers. Parents and teens, both boys and girls, are strongly urged to ask their health care provider for HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine, which prevents several types of cancer. The recommendation is to start the HPV vaccination series at 11-12 years of age because the immune response to the HPV vaccine is better in pre-teens and can mean better protection later as the child progresses to adulthood. New guidelines for completion of the HPV vaccine series is now two doses separated by 6 – 12 months if the first dose is given before the child’s 15th birthday. The meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) is also important for adolescent and teen health. The MCV4 vaccine protects against the devastating effects of bacteria that cause meningitis or a life-threatening bloodstream infection. Meningococcal disease is relatively rare, but if contracted, can cause death in less than 48 hours and leave those who survive with life-long problems such as brain damage or limb amputation. MCV4 vaccination is recommended for all kids at 11-12 years of age with a booster of MCV4 at age 16. The meningococcal vaccine is required for first-time college students who will live in on-campus student housing. College students are also required to have MMR and hepatitis B vaccines.
For more information about immunizations, call the Pottawatomie County Health Department at 405-273-2157 or contact your health care provider.

"Fireworks (Archives)" by Apichatpong Weerasethakul to remain in OKC Highlight of special exhibition “The Serenity of Madness” now part of OKCMOA permanent collection OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Museum of Art (OKCMOA) has acquired “Fireworks (Archives)” by award-winning filmmaker and artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul. “Fireworks (Archives)” was created in an edition of five, and its purchase confirms the Museum’s commitment to building a significant collection of art of the moving image. “Our Samuel Roberts Noble Theatre is nationally renowned as a leader in foreign, independent and classic cinema,” said OKCMOA President and CEO E. Michael Whittington. “The acquisition of ‘Fireworks,’ as well as the recently acquired ‘Hedge Crawl’ by Andy Goldsworthy, demonstrates our commitment to contemporary art as well as artists who are increasingly using the moving image as a medium.” “Not only was this work one of the finest in the exhibition, it was also the most popular,” said Michael J. Anderson, Ph.D., OKCMOA director of curatorial affairs. “The video benefits significantly from OKCMOA’s unique presentation, with panels of hanging glass, a short-throw HD projector and a surround sound system. By acquiring this work, the Museum is carrying on the legacy of this significant exhibition and keeping an important piece of it here in OKC.” “Fireworks” is part of a recent, ongoing project by Weerasethakul that explores themes of memory and Thailand’s political history. The first in a planned series, “Fireworks (Archives)” functions as a hallucinatory memory machine. It catalogs the animal sculptures at a temple in northeastern Thailand where the artist grew up. In it, the actors blend in with the illuminated beasts as they travel through the temple grounds,
lighting a path with fireworks and a camera flash. Weerasethakul grew up in Khon Kaen in northeastern Thailand. He began making video shorts in 1994, and completed his first feature film in 2000. His art and feature films have won him numerous prizes, including two from the Cannes Film Festival and several from the French Minister of Culture. His film “Syndromes and a Century” was the first Thai film to be selected for competition at the Venice Film Festival. Additionally, “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” won the Palme d’Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010, making it the first Southeast Asian film to win the most prestigious award in the film world. OKCMOA hosted an exhibition of Weerasethakul’s work in spring 2018. “Apichatpong Weerasethakul: The Serenity of Madness” presented a selected survey of rarely seen experimental short films and video installations by Weerasethakul, alongside his photography, sketches and archival materials. Curated by Gridthiya Gaweewong, a longtime collaborator of the filmmaker’s, the exhibition was accompanied by a retrospective of the director’s theatrical releases in the Samuel Roberts Noble Theater. “Apichatpong Weerasethakul: The Serenity of Madness” is a traveling exhibition curated by Gaweewong and produced by Independent Curators International (ICI), New York. The exhibition and tour are made possible, in part, by the generous support from MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, Chiang Mai, the ICI Board of Trustees and ICI’s International Forum. The Museum plans to display the new acquisition beginning next spring.
About the Oklahoma City Museum of Art Accredited by the American Association of Museums and a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art serves over 125,000 visitors annually from all fifty states and thirty foreign countries and presents exhibitions from prestigious museums throughout the world. Go Again” in this prequel/sequel to the 2008 hit romantic comedy, Sophie learns about her mother’s past while pregnant herself; “The Equalizer 2″ which follows retired CIA agent Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) as he sets out on a path of revenge after one of his friends is killed; and the horror film “Unfriended: Dark Web” about a teen who comes into possession of a new laptop and soon discovers that the previous owner is not only watching him, but will also do anything to get it back.
2. Saturday is National Junk Food Day. Whether you have a sweet tooth or
crave salty snacks this is the day to indulge. Or take it up a notch and combine sweet and salty by trying chocolate covered potato chips or chocolate dipped pretzels.
3. Friday is Space Exploration Day and also Moon Day because July 20,
1969, was when Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin set foot on the moon. Check the newspaper or call around to see if your library or any museums are having any events. Or you can camp out in the backyard this night and look at the moon. A telescope is ideal, but even binoculars can give you a new, close-up view.
4. As far as sports, this weekend we have Major League Baseball, NASCAR and Major League Soccer, so you’ll have plenty to watch on TV. Check the newspaper for schedules.
5. Monday is Hot Enough For Ya Day, and, boy, is it perfect timing — most of the U.S. is suffering through a heat wave. Go to a pool or the beach, play in sprinklers, eat ice cream — just find a way to stay cool!
