RATTLESNAKE MUSEUM OPENS IN THE STOCKYARDS
OKLAHOMA CITY – It is summer and Oklahoma families are spending more time at lakes and state parks. With that, the possibility of contact with one of Oklahoma’s many venomous snakes becomes a reality. A new local exhibit offers the opportunity to see these creatures up close and personal in a safe setting to help identify them in the wild. OKC Rattlesnake Museum will open daily beginning July 5th at 1501 S. Agnew, in Oklahoma City’s Stockyards District. The museum includes 26 exhibits featuring all of the rattlesnakes native to Oklahoma, as well as Oklahoma’s other dangerous snakes -- copperheads and cottonmouths. Other rattlesnakes from around the U.S., and a Gila Monster (large venomous lizard) are also on exhibit. Carl Sandefer, museum curator, is available for any questions visitors might have during their tour of the museum. One of the rattlesnakes on display is an Eastern Diamondback named “Big Girl.” She is over five feet long and weighs 22 pounds. Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes are the largest of any rattlesnake species, as well as the heaviest venomous snakes in North America. This particular rattlesnake is found in the southeastern United States. OKC Rattlesnake Museum will be open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. For more information, go to: https://www.facebook.com/snakemuseumokc/ or call (405) 850-5905.

to have fun this weekend
13, wherein Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) tries to balance being both the superhero Ant-Man with being a dad, meanwhile Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past; ” The First Purge” an R-rated action-horror film that is a prequel to 2013's “The Purge” that focuses on the events that lead up to the very first Purge event.
2. Invite your friends over for some gaming this weekend as Saturday is Video Games Day. Play your favorite new releases or vintage games or go online to watch recaps of last month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo presentations to learn what video game publishers are planning to release in the coming months.
3. If you want to get out of the house this weekend, we suggest you plan a picnic. If you need a menu suggestion, you can’t go wrong with hot dogs and ice cream (among other delights) – July is National Hot Dog Month and National Ice Cream Month.
4. On July 8, 1947, a public information officer at the Roswell Army Air Field in New Mexico issued a press release stating that personnel there had recovered a “flying disc”, which had crashed on a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. So began one of the world’s most famous — and most debunked — UFO claims. While there’s still no hard evidence of alien life to celebrate, you can still celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Roswell UFO incident: Watch some alien-themed TV shows (such as the recent X-Files reboot) or movies (“Independence Day” or it’s sequel “Independence Day: Resurgence”), or make some alien-themed crafts.
5.
If your favorite team has been kicked out of the World Cup, don’t worry, there’s plenty of other sports on. This weekend we have NASCAR’s Overton’s 400 at the Chicagoland Speedway, as well as the usual Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer games, so you’ll have plenty to watch on TV. Check your newspaper for schedules.

Oklahoma History Center Opens Newest Exhibit “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s ‘Oklahoma!’: The Birth of Modern Musical Theatre and a New Image for the State” OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma History Center’s newest exhibit, “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s ‘Oklahoma!’: The Birth of Modern Musical Theatre and a New Image for the State,” celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Broadway production’s debut. The exhibit opens on Thursday, July 12, and may be viewed during the History Center’s normal hours of operation, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Based on the 1931 play “Green Grow the Lilacs” by Claremore, Okla., native Lynn Riggs, “Oklahoma!” was the first musical written by the legendary team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” began a new era in American musical theatre. It also began the most successful songwriting partnership that Broadway has ever seen. collaboration, Rodgers and Hammerstein worked successfully with other partners. In 1942 Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart were highly successful, having written musical comedies that were praised for their wit and sophistication. A decade prior, Oscar Hammerstein II enjoyed similar success writing innovative operettas that consistently reshaped the art form. “Showboat,” his 1927 collaboration with Jerome Kern, is highly regarded as a landmark in American theatre history. “Oklahoma!” premiered on Broadway at the St. James Theatre on March 31, 1943, and closed after 2,212 performances on March 29, 1948. Set in Indian Territory just after the turn of the 20th century, the spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the backdrop for the love story between Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a beautiful farm girl. The title of the History Center exhibit makes reference to a “New Image for the State.” In 1939 John Steinbeck published his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Grapes of Wrath,” a fictional account of the mass migration of thousands of “Okies” from Oklahoma to California in search of jobs, land, dignity and a future in the shadow of the Great Depression. The novel cast an image of hopelessness, bank foreclosures and economic hardship on Oklahoma. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” counteracted this image with its lively musical comedy that, despite a few fight scenes that include an accidental death, portrayed romance, laughter and a spirit of joy in direct contrast to the storyline of “The Grapes of Wrath.” The Oklahoma History Center is located at 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive in Oklahoma City. It is open
Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please visit www.okhistory.org/historycenter. The Oklahoma History Center is a division of the Oklahoma Historical Society and is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, National Archives and is an accredited member of the American Alliance of Museums. The mission of the Oklahoma Historical Society is to collect, preserve and share the history and culture of the state of Oklahoma.
