The Code of the West inspires National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum's upcoming film series Curated Western Movie Matinees to draw diverse crowds each Wednesday in the fall OKLAHOMA CITY – Cowboy ethics and an unwritten Western creed have inspired the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum’s upcoming film series, The Code of the West – Western Movie Matinees, on Wednesdays from August 29 – September 19 at 1:00 p.m. The Code of the West is the second in a series of four that discovers 20th century movies and how they teach the unspoken Western code in a unique and exciting way. The series was created to bridge the gap between past generations to those who are eager to carry on and learn the traditions of those who came before them. “A critical part of the Museum’s role is to keep the Code of the West alive and relevant,”

said President and CEO Natalie Shirley. “Movies are a universal language and a fun way for all generations to connect with the values that built our great Western heritage. It is our honor to share these movies and values with our community!” On August 29, the featured movie is The Westerner (1940), followed by Wagon Master (1950) on September 5, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957) on September 12, and 3:10 to Yuma (1957) on September 19. Free popcorn is provided at each of the showings. “In this four-part film series, we’re looking at some classic westerns that illustrate major principles of The Code of the West,” said film historian and guest curator Elizabeth Anthony. “The audi-

ence will be informed and entertained in equal measure!” Remaining Western Movie Matinee film series include the Haunting Portrayals of Male and Male-Female Comradery series on October 3, 10, and 17, followed by The Civil War and the Western Homefront series on October 24, 31, November 7, and 14. A full schedule of upcoming movies can be found at nationalcowboymuseum.org/ movies. Admission is free on Wide Open Wednesdays courtesy of the Oklahoma Ford Dealers. The curated film series are made possible with support from an anonymous donor and Oklahoma City University’s Center for Interpersonal Studies through Film & Literature. Popcorn is provided. About the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Nationally accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is located only six miles northeast of downtown Oklahoma City in the Adventure District at the junction of Interstates 44 and 35, the state’s exciting Adventure Road corridor. NR. Appropriate for ages 10+.

September 12 – Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957) From Fort Griffin to Dodge City to Tombstone, Marshal Wyatt Earp (Burt Lancaster) confronts gamblers, killers and cattle thieves, having sworn to uphold the law. OKC ZOO ANNOUNCES WORLD ELEPHANT DAY ACTIVITIES PRESENTED BY BOB MOORE SUBARU Games, crafts, bio-facts and more scheduled for the event this Sunday, August 12 The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden is hosting World Elephant Day on Sunday, August 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Presented by Bob Moore Subaru, Zoo guests are invited to join the herd and come together for elephants, and enjoy a day of fun and learning with games, crafts, bio-facts and other activities on-site at the OKC Zoo’s elephant habitat and entry plaza. This global event brings attention to how individuals can help conserve and protect these beloved animals. At the elephant habitat, Zoo guests can play conservation PLINKO and spin the elephant trivia wheel for chances to win sweet treats, made by companies observing sustainable palm oil practices. They can also decorate their own conservation prayer flag, similar to those on display along the entrance to Sanctuary Asia, the new 6.6-acre habitat opening later this summer at the OKC Zoo. In the entry plaza, guests can pledge their support and sign their names to a banner that will be given to the elephants during a special 2 p.m. presentation at the elephant pavilion. “We are excited to host World Elephant Day activities again this year, shining a light on these wonderful animals and the critical role they play in nature,” said Rachel Emory, lead elephant caretaker. “Unfortunately, elephants are in trouble and need our help. Our goal is for every guest to leave the Zoo as passionate as we are about protecting elephants and to take action to preserve them on our planet.” Also on World Elephant Day, Zoo guests can attend elephant presentations at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. A few special prizes such as elephant plushes and t-shirts will be randomly distributed during the presentations. Lancer Hospitality, the OKC Zoo’s food and beverage partner, is providing free ice cream to those in attendance, while supplies last. Breyers, the ice cream producer, uses sustainable palm oil practices in their manufacturing process, protecting critical wildlife and wild places. Guests driving Subaru vehicles to the Zoo on World Elephant Day will receive complementary valet parking courtesy of Bob Moore Subaru. Valet parking for other vehicles is $7. In honor of World Elephant Day 2018, the

Zoo is sending $250 of Round Up for Conservation funding to an International Elephant Foundation sponsored conservation project. The project is supporting the Conservation Response Units (CRU) in Way Kambas, Sumatra to help the teams mitigate human-elephant conflict, monitor wildlife activity, address and stop forest crime, and protect valuable habitat. Guests will have the opportunity to share their World Elephant Day memories on social media with a digital photo booth courtesy of Bob Moore Subaru. Snapchat fans will love the custom elephant filters sponsored by Bob Moore Subaru available at the ZooZeum on Sunday, August 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bob Moore Subaru will be kicking off the celebration with a Selfie Saturday Pre-Celebration for World Elephant Day on Saturday, August 11 at their dealership. They will give away a pair of Zoo admission tickets to the first ten test drives who take a World Elephant Day selfie with the Bob Moore Subaru Selfie Station. Asian elephants are endangered and their African counterparts are vulnerable. Currently, the greatest threats to Asian elephants are habitat destruction and human-elephant conflict. About 60 percent of the total human population lives in Asia,

and this population has nearly quadrupled in the last century. As human needs increase, more natural land is taken away from Asian elephants in order to build cities, homes, highways, farmland, etc. Habitat destruction is forcing animals, elephants in particular, to come in contact with humans in ways that can cause conflict. In addition to supporting the Northern Rangelands Trust since 2009, which protects African elephants, the OKC Zoo has been working with Rainforest Trust to purchase and preserve 13,000 acres of forest in central Sumatra and 18,000 acres of forest in Borneo, both of which are natural habitats for Asian elephants. The OKC Zoo also helps support a number of other elephant conservation projects, including the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Rakhine Yoma Elephant Range Project in Myanmar and International Elephant Foundation’s conservation efforts in Sumatra. These projects support boots on the ground teams that protect forests, prevent poaching and encroachment, and mitigate human-elephant conflict. Since 2010, the Zoo has contributed almost $400,000 to elephant-related conservation. The OKC Zoo participates in the Asian Elephant Species Survival Plan (SSP), developed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Asha, the OKC Zoo’s 23-year-old female Asian elephant, will soon be raising a new calf, due this fall after a 22-month gestation. She is also a wonderful mother to Achara, 3! Rex, 50, will yet again be a proud papa fathering his second calf since he arrived at the Zoo. Don’t forget to show your support for elephants on World Elephant Day at the OKC Zoo! Located at the crossroads of I-44 and I-35, the Oklahoma City Zoo is an Adventure Road partner and a member of Oklahoma City’s Adventure District. The Zoo proudly holds accreditations from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and the American Association of Museums. Guests are welcome daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. with exhibit buildings closing at 4:45 p.m. Stay connected to the world of wild! Find the Zoo on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and visit Our Stories. Béla Fleck to headline BANJO FEST 2018 concert The American Banjo Museum is proud to announce the return Oklahoma engagement of 16time Grammy© winning artist, Béla Fleck – joining Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder, John McEuen, roots music icon, Tony Trischka and Canadian television personality, Tim Allan - as the headliners of this year’s BANJO FEST concert to be held at the Hudiburg Chevrolet Center at Rose State College in Midwest City on Saturday, September 8th. Known as the individual who virtually reinvented the look and sound of the modern banjo, never has the banjo world encountered a more focused, determined or consistent artistic mindset than it has witnessed in Béla Fleck. After dutifully mastering the bluegrass style which was his inspiration, in the 1970s Fleck began experimenting with the fusion of bluegrass with jazz, bebop and rock. After the eight-and-a-half-year stint with the Newgrass Revival which introduced his exciting musical mindset and unpredictable banjo style to an unsuspecting - yet enthusiastic - acoustic music world, Béla founded the Flecktones, a jazz oriented group which saw his music earning genuine acceptance in the worlds of jazz, rock and pop, garnering the group national television appearances as well as numerous Grammy awards.

Béla Fleck

Named after Hungarian composer Béla Bartók, Fleck would seem to have been destined to play classical music. Joining forces with virtuoso bassist, Edgar Meyer, in 2001 Béla made his classical connection releasing the CD, Perpetual Motion which went on to win that year’s Grammy for the best classical crossover recording. Bela’s first stand-alone work for banjo and orchestra, a concerto entitled The Imposter, was commissioned and premiered by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra in 2011. Since then Fleck has added The Juno Concerto to his writing credits - with another concerto planned for 2018. Intertwined with these activities, in 2005 Béla made a pilgrimage to Africa to film and record Throw Down Your Heart, an encompassing project which resulted in an award-winning documentary film as well as two Grammy winning albums, both of which explored the African roots of the banjo through collaborations with incredible African musicians. Fleck also went on to cultivate ongoing musical partnerships with diverse talents such as Chick Corea, Chris Thile, Brooklyn Rider and, most recently, his wife and gifted banjoist, Abigail Washburn. Béla Fleck’s virtuosity and adventurous musical spirit in seemingly unrelated musical collaborations and settings has resulted in his being nominated for over 30 Grammy awards in more different categories than any artist in history. While his music may be difficult to categorize, Fleck’s musical offerings, presented with an unmistakable level of quality, touch virtually any listener regardless of musical taste, enlightenment or aptitude. Simply put, Béla Fleck loves to play the banjo and put it into unique musical settings. Visiting Oklahoma City to be honored with induction into the American Banjo Museum Hall of Fame on September 7 th , Béla Fleck will be joined during BANJO FEST 2018 by three fellow Hall of Fame banjoists, John McEuen, Tony Trischka and Tim Allan. During a career spanning more than fifty years, Acoustic Traveler, John McEuen, has established himself as an iconic patriarch in a movement blending rock ‘n roll with the acoustic musical sensibilities of America’s heartland. As a founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, gifted and engaging multi-instrumental solo performer, or prolific music and film industry impresario, John McEuen continues to define and shape the direction of acoustic mu-

sic around the world. A consummate banjo artist and educator and perhaps the most influential banjo player in the roots music world, for more than 45 years Tony Trischka has inspired generations of bluegrass and acoustic musicians with the many voices he has brought to his instrument. Part of an elite group of America’s most accomplished and innovative artists with his selection as a United States Artist Friends Fellow, Trischka is respected as a trailblazer to the current generation of roots music artists while maintaining vigilant respect for the bluegrass roots which were his musical inspiration. A two-time Hall of Fame inductee for his contributions to both performance as well as education, Tim Allan endeared himself to his fellow Canadian’s through his years on the immensely popular Tommy Hunter Show. As a musician, his impeccable technique and musicality proved him, however, to be much more than a television personality. With a stage repertoire ranging from pop to classics, Allan is a crowd-pleasing entertainer as well as a virtuoso tenor banjoist. Presented by the American Banjo Museum, BANJO FEST concert tickets may be purchased by visiting okciviccenter.com or by calling (405) 297-2264.
