‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ promises bigger, better season on NBC

LOS ANGELES — The Nine-Nine is back and better than ever, at least that’s the plan. The cast and creator of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” appeared Wednesday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour to talk about the transition from Fox, which canceled it in May, to NBC, which picked it up for season six 31 hours later. To curb any fears the show will look different on NBC, creator and executive producer Dan Goor said he was given a mandate by the network to keep it business as usual. “In a lot of ways, I think it is the same type of show and I think it is going to be even better this year,” he said. As for the theme song, it will also remain intact, though actress Stephanie Beatriz had a substitute in mind, if needed. “Can we have the “Backstreet Boys’ song

[‘Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)’]?” she asked, referencing the pop song that scores a NBC promo for the show. “But with a lot of peacock references,” added costar Chelsea Peretti, a nod to NBC’s mascot. The very funny panel also put out some lofty promises into the universe, especially when Goor was asked how the show would be different on NBC and the pressure to shoulder those expectations. “It will be funnier, more heartfelt, better guest stars, more everything, longer and shorter,” he joked, getting laughs from the crowd and the cast. It will also continue to find ways to do timely episodes, like Rosa’s coming out storyline and the mass shooting episode last year. This year, they are working on a #MeToo-themed episode.

“Our challenge is always to make them still feel really true to the show and feel funny, but at the same time give weight to the issue and to really explore it in a fair way,” Goor said. Actor Andy Samberg said he was confident, “maybe blindly so,” the show would land somewhere after its cancellation. But what surprised him most was how the show permeated the news cycle and gained traction so quickly, even getting support from the likes of Mark Hamill and Lin-Manuel Miranda. “It has been a feel-good story for us,” Samberg said. “For some reason, I don’t know if it was just a slow news day, the story of our show getting cancelled and resurrected, it struck some kind of nerve... It gave this show a story.” To get a little insight into what the cast was going through during those devastating 31 hours of cancellation, a few of the cast members said all you have to do is check the tapes on ABC’s “The $100,000 Pyramid.” Cast members Terry Crews, Andre Braugher and Melissa Fumero were all in New York taping the celebrity game show when they got the news of the cancellation, putting the acting to good use. “If you watch the show, it’s the fakest smile ever,” Crews said. Fumero added, “It was a nice distraction, for sure. But when I watched it, I could totally tell.” With cancellation blues behind them, the crew is looking ahead to the new season, which will premiere in midseason. Despite the early year start, Goor confirmed one vital question lingering for fans. “Yes, I think we have a really good idea how to do the Halloween heist,” Goor said of the fan-favorite tradition, to cheers from the room.

Lee Greenwood Friday August 31, 2018 8:00 pm • Grand Event Center Lee Greenwood is an ICON in country music, with more than 30 albums to his credit. In fact, MCA released an album in 2013 called ICON. With seven #1 songs & 25 charted singles his hits include: “It Turns Me Inside Out”, “Ring On Her Finger Time on Her Hands”, ”She’s Lyin”, “I don’t Mind the Thorns if You’re the Rose”, “Dixie Road”, “Somebody’s Gonna Love You”, “Going Going Gone”, “You Got A Good Love Comin”, “Fools Gold”, and “Mornin Ride”. Several cross over hits include, “Touch & Go Crazy”, “IOU” and the duet with Barbara Mandrell, “To Me”. An additional duet with Suzie Boggus, “Hopelessly Yours”, was nominated for a Grammy. The CD “American Patriot”, recorded & released in 1992, went Platinum in 3 months. Greenwood’s latest CD is: "I Want to be in Your World." He wrote three of the seven songs & plays saxophone on the original track, “Here Comes Love There Goes My Heart”. He also covered the Michael McDonald/Kenny Loggins ballad, “You Can Let Go Now.” McDonald is featured playing piano on the song. Lee Greenwood has won numerous industry awards including, Male Vocalist of the year for the Academy of Country Music in 1983, two Male Vocalist of the Year awards from the Country Music Association, 1983 & 1984 and a Grammy for Top Male Vocal Performance in 1985 for “I.O.U.”. He also won CMA Song of the Year in 1985 for writing “God Bless the USA.” The song, “God Bless the USA” has been voted the most recognizable patriotic song in America. The singer knows first-hand what it’s like to have loved ones fighting for the freedom of all Americans as his father served in the Navy & the Merchant Marine in World War II. “USA” is now part of the film for Homeland Security shown when swearing in new citizens to the United States. “God Bless the USA” went far beyond what Greenwood expected when he wrote it in the back of his tour bus in 1983. The song has been in the top five on the country singles charts three times (1991, 2001 and 2003), giving it the distinction of being the only song in any genre of music to achieve that feat. It was also #1 on

the pop charts after 9/11/01. Greenwood says; “USA is the song I always felt the need to write”. “I wanted to have something that would unite Americans from coast to coast and to instill pride back in the United States. The song represents my family, my community and those men & women who have paid the price for the freedoms we all love & enjoy.” In 2011, Beyonce offered her version of “God Bless the USA” as a download, with the proceeds going to the 9/11 firefighters fund in NYC. It has been performed by contestants on the Fox Network’s “American Idol” twice & was the winning song in the 2011 “Dancing with the Stars” competition on ABC. It is performed at all military and patriotic events throughout the year all across America. “USA” has also been in several movies. Greenwood performs for many charitable events and gives his time & name to numerous organizations and fundraisers. He is the National spokesperson for “Products for Good”, the Honor 1 Campaign, and on the advisory board of the “Challenger Commission”. The singer is also a member of the National Endowment for the Arts Council, a Presidential appointment. Music has always been a part of Greenwood’s life. He started playing the piano when he was seven and the saxophone at 12. In junior high, he started his first group called the Moonbeams. His sister Patricia was the piano player in the band. By the time, he finished High School he played most all the instruments in the orchestra and was the Drum Major for the marching band. Greenwood was born in Los Angeles California & finished high school in Sacramento in June 1960. He passed on track & music scholarships to the College of the Pacific along with a professional baseball career to pursue his passion for music. He also elected to skip his high school graduation ceremony to begin work at the Golden Hotel & Casino in Reno Nevada with his own band, the “Apollos”. That turned out to be a great choice. The California native was discovered in 1979

by Larry McFaden, who saw him performing in a show at the Nugget Casino in Sparks, Nevada. Larry was the bass player and bandleader for Mel Tillis. He brought the singer to Nashville and got him signed to the Halsey Agency, who booked the Oak Ridge Boys. He began working with producer Jerry Crutchfield who would record with Lee for the next 20 years. “Choosing songs to record is always exciting,” says Greenwood. “I’m a songwriter as well and I love lyrics that have depth and emotion. I’m thankful for the many writers & artists who have contributed to my career”. Lee and his wife, Kimberly, a former Miss Tennessee, fell in love on his 1989 USO/DOD tour. They were married in Nashville in 1992 and have two sons, Dalton and Parker. The son of a World War II veteran, his authentic life-long patriotism of the United States compelled him to write two former books, Does God Still Bless The USA: A Plea For A Better America (2012), and God Bless The USA: Biography of A Song (1993). With the hope of ingraining life-long pride and patriotism for America in our country's youngest generation, he released his first children's book, Proud To Be An American, Memorial Day Weekend 2015, and it debuted at No. 1 on the Amazon children’s book charts the week of its release. The book marks his third professional work as an author, and features poignant lyrics from "God Bless The USA" paired with colorful, thoughtprovoking illustrations by Amanda Sekulow. Greenwood is currently embarking on a national book tour in support. In conjunction with the release of Proud To Be An American, Greenwood will continue his long-standing position as the National Ambassador for Helping A Hero, a non-profit organization committed to providing specially-adapted housing and support to military personnel severely injured in the war on terror. Mark Mark Miller was born in Ohio, but moved to Florida when he was in eighth grade. Growing up, he played basketball, went to the beach, worked at Walt Disney World, and went to school—pretty much in that order. He was on the basketball team at the University of Central Florida when he started writing songs, finally deciding to move to Nashville to focus on singing and songwriting. The move worked out okay. Mark has written many of Sawyer Brown’s hits, including “Step That Step,” “The Walk,” “Thank God for You,” “The Boys and Me,” as well as the band’s anthem: “Some Girls Do.” Mark discovered the band Casting Crowns and has produced all of the band’s CDs, winning a Grammy for his work with them along the way. In April 2013, “Ring the Bell,” a movie that Mark wrote and produced, was released—and he has more movies in the pre-production stage. He doesn’t sleep much. Mark and his wife Lisa have two children—Madison and Gunnar. They own their daddy.

Shayne Shayne Hill is the not-so-new “new guy.” Shayne joined the band in June of 2004—after rehearsing with the band once. Once. Yes—he was that good. Shayne grew up on the road playing music. His family had a band and they toured all across the Western U.S.—with Shayne playing even more instruments than he does today. But no—he will not play fiddle for you. We’ve already asked him. Once moving to Nashville, Shayne toured with Chely Wright, Avalon, and LeAnn Rimes, just to name a few. He is also an in-demand background singer and guitar player. And since he needs just a little bit more

to do, he has his own recording studio—where he can be found whenever one of his kids isn’t crying…and sometimes even when they are. Shayne and his wife Kristin have two children, Jesse and Harper—they are cute like their mama.

Jim Jim Scholten plays all the low notes—always has, always will. We’re all good with that. Jim began playing music when he was just a kid— which makes sense, considering that his mom was a music teacher. It should be noted that he often played his music louder than his mom would have like him to—it should also be noted that that did not stop him. Jim played in bands throughout his home state of Michigan prior to moving to Nashville. He tells us that we are his favorite band, though—and we believe him. Jim’s got an honest face. Jim plays bass on numerous recording sessions every year—and still makes time to play in the praise band in his church when he’s home. We think he tries not to play too loud in church. Jim is the proud father of Nick and Anna—who should really think about forming their own band. They’ve got game.

Gregg Gregg “Hobie” Hubbard was born and raised in Apopka, Florida—The Indoor Foliage Capitol of the World. So there. There was never a time Hobie can remember that he wasn’t listening to—and by listening we mean obsessed with—music. He grew up attached to the radio

and record player—and is still rarely very far from either one today…although the record player looks more like an ipod these days. Hobie sang and played piano in church through his high school years and began writing songs when he was in college. He has co-written several of Sawyer Brown’s hits, including “The Dirt Road,” “Drive Me Wild,” “’Round Here,” and “Outskirts of Town,” as well as several songs on the Sawyer Brown Christmas albums. In addition to Sawyer Brown, Hobie has sung background on recording sessions for a variety of artists. Hobie gave up a promising career in the food services industry to join the band. He might or might not still have the smock.

Joe Joe Smyth never met a percussive instrument he didn’t like—and he can play them all. The band’s original bio stated that Joe played 300 percussive instruments—a number that Hobie made up, but still swears by. Joe is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music and earned a Master’s Degree in Music from the University of Miami—but he doesn’t rub that in the other guys’ faces. That speaks volumes about him. In addition to being a sought-after session drummer, Joe is accomplished symphonic musician, as well. He has played with the Nashville Symphony, including at their heralded appearance at Carnegie Hall. Joe is also a respected percussion instructor, doing his part to nurture the next generation of drummers and percussionists. Joe is the proud dad of Tristan, Jenna, and Bryce.

Album reviews: Recent & recommended music for August Yvette Landry & The Jukes, ‘Louisiana Lovin''

From the album’s first piano notes, on the Jack Greene classic “I Need Somebody Bad,” it’s clear that Eric Adcock will be a standout player on “Louisiana Lovin’”: Joyful and unabashedly old-fashioned, his keyboards play the role of plutonium-powered Delorean, delivering you directly into a 1950s southern juke joint before you can say “Great Scott!“ But Adcock has plenty of competition for album MVP — especially Landry, whose sultry vocals on tracks like the opener and “Daddy Daddy” combine the playfulness of Wanda Jackson with Loretta Lynn’s lucious heartbreak. It’s a perfect match with the cherrywood-smooth voice of collaborator Roddie Romero, who proves an able sparring partner with Landry on duets like the smoky “Homesick Blues,” and provides sweet harmonies on tracks like Ivory Joe Hunter’s “I Almost Lost My Mind.“ Throw in Derek Huston’s honking sax and you have what may be the most lovable vintage throwback of the year.

Giulia Millanta, ’Conversation With A Ghost’ There’s something spooky and beautiful about the new album from Millanta, who comes to us from Florence, Italy by way of Austin, Texas and -- judging from her eclectic musical choices — every cabaret, music hall and opera house along the way. There’s nothing predictable about the chanteuse’s breathy meditations, replete with touches of torch-song longing (“Coney Island”), noirish twang (the chilling “Hourglass”) and even a touch of Shirley Bassey brass (“Enough is Enough”). And lyrically, Millanta isn’t shy about painting dark, striking pictures — often in several languages — of a troubled and troubling world on tracks like “Violence” and the melancholy, flamenco-tinged album closer, “Space.“

Liz Frame & The Kickers, ’Sparrow in a Shoebox’ Frame, a longtime staple of the New England music scene, simply has one of the most striking voices out there — a perfect country quaver imbued with just the right doses of melancholy and hard-earned resignation. Throw in lyrics that are equal parts evocative and thought-pro-

voking and you have her group’s latest offering, which offers up no shortage of stunners. There’s the title track, a twangy slice of country folk about long-held dreams that, like the bird of the title, are not dead yet; the deceivingly rollicking bluegrass of the unhealthy-relationship ditty “I Used To Be Your Slave”; and the sad, biting nostalgia of “Ungrateful Girl,” on which a spurned woman qualifies her advice to her ex’s new lover by noting, “I’m an ungrateful girl, what do I know?“ Frame and her Kickers — John Webb on lead guitars, Sean Hennessy on bass and Pete Whitehead on drums — take some dark paths on “Sparrow,” like on the turbulent “Little Brown House,” about a woman trapped in domestic turmoil who “wants to sleep for 1,000 years.” But by the time they get to the album’s closer, the sweetly resigned “I Don’t Worry No More,” you’ve been treated to a tour through a beautifully produced, poignantly delivered Americana landscape that leaves behind more hope than heartache.

Kingsley Flood, ’Neighbors & Strangers’ Maybe it’s the timing, but Kingsley Flood’s latest feels like the perfect culmination of the band’s thoughtful approach and the country we find ourselves living in. Punctuated by frontman Naseem Khuri’s gritty vocals and Gloucester guitarist George Hall’s fierce licks, these are rollicking and melodic tracks with serious musical heft that paint a decisive portrait of Trump’s America. “Call me a trespasser and untrue, and I’ll tell your history better than you,” Khuri sings on standout track “Fifth of July,” which feels particularly prescient given what’s been going on at the border. The churning “Little Man,” meanwhile, is a cathartic rave-up that seems aimed squarely at the commander-in-chief: “Won’t you tell me what I’m itching to hear? Won’t you show me who I’m itching to fear?“ Of course the turns of phrase wouldn’t matter if these weren’t great songs overall, and they are most definitely that: From the noir rock of album-opener “All That Gold” to the introspective closer “Never Been Home,” the mix of clever percussion, perfectly complementary horns and keyboards, striking licks and Khuri’s urgent vocals make for what may be Kingsley Flood’s best collection yet. — Peter Chianca (pchianca@wickedlocal.com) is news director for Wicked Local North of Boston and author of “Glory Days: Springsteen’s Greatest Albums.” Follow him on Twitter at @pchianca.
