Veteran offensive line big asset for Shawnee Wolves By Keven Scrutchins Contributing Writer
SHAWNEE- A year ago, the Shawnee Wolves were stepping up into the land of the unknown, Class 6A Division II football. The Wolves scratched and clawed their way into two district wins, showing that they can compete at the higher level. “6A is so much tougher than 5A, top to bottom,” said Shawnee head coach Billy Brown. “We got our feet wet last year and are really looking forward to it this year.” The Wolves enter the 2019 season with some critical parts unknown, namely at the quarterback position. Shawnee loses the services of 2-year-starter Heath Hunter to graduation and is looking to fill those mighty big shoes.

Dre Evans and Karson Conway appear to be engaged in a battle for the starting role. “They are working hard and they keep improving,” Brown said. Whoever wins the job will have some experienced protection up front. “We have the whole offensive line returning this year,” said Brown. Leading the way will be college prospect Sergio Garcia at left tackle. Joining Garcia will be several linemen with playing time from a year ago. Among the names to look for include Matthew Williams at the other tackle along with Josh Hair and Lucky Sheppard at the guard positions and Koby Mitchell at center. Mitchell played in several games as a freshman and started the entire 2018 season. He Continued on pg. 3

makes for a solid centerpiece to the Wolves’ offense. Looking to capitalize on an experienced line will be plenty of weapons at the skill positions for the Wolfpack. “We went 7-0 this summer and won at Wewoka’s 7-on-7 this summer,” said Brown. It appears he may have plenty of talent to throw at teams this fall. Senior Scout Cawvey, who Brown has said runs the best routes of anyone we’ll see, leads the charge at receiver. Cawvey, who is also a baseball standout, has scored the most touchdowns for the Wolves over the past two seasons. A year ago, he passed Darien Gordon for the most receiving yards in school history. Every yard gained this season, he will be adding on to his record. Joe Maytubby and Cyn’Cere Spencer should also get plenty of action on the offensive perimeter. The Wolves will also be looking to fill the void at running back for the 2019 campaign. Shawnee graduated two of the strongest running backs around, in Elijah Powis and Tre’Juan Shaw, but with the new crop of runners it may

not take long to forget about the past. Junior Demetrius Beavers and sophomore Jaylon Orange should make lots of noise in the Shawnee backfield. On defense, Shawnee returns seven starters, including Isaiah Bighead who anchors the line. Joining Bighead up front will be Maytubby and Justice Simpson who will look to disrupt opposing offenses, Xavier Reed returns to lead the Wolves linebacking corps. The strength of the defense just may be in its secondary. There is a mix of speed and athleticism in the Shawnee back half. Spencer returns at one of the safety slots and is joined by Orange, who played a bunch of snaps last season. Coach Billy Brown is entering his 34th season in coaching. He has been a head coach for 19 of those years and enters into his 16th year at the Shawnee helm. Kevin Ball will serve as the defensive coordinator for the Wolves. Jack Dingus is the special teams coach and Darrin Dean will coach up the quarterbacks. Brandon Edwards will coach the receivers and Randy Henshaw will take on the defensive line duties. Kent Hixson will coach the linebackers while Fred Shaw will be in charge of the secondary.

Savages leaner, stronger, determined entering 2019 By Keven Scrutchins Contributing Writer
TECUMSEH- The boys of summer. No, not baseball, but a determined bunch of footballers working to get Tecumseh back into a winning culture. “This was the best summer of workouts we have had here in three years,” said Tecumseh head coach Ty Bullock. “We are really excited about the upcoming season – they (team) are really buying in and working hard,” Bullock said. The hard work may be most noticeable on the offensive line. “We are a big, big team,” said Bullock. “We are big up front, but with the work put in this summer, we have leaned up and gotten stronger.” Leading the offensive front is threeyear starter Jackson Phelps at the center position. “Phelps has had tons of snaps and is very experienced,” said Bullock. Juniors Ethan Rickey and Daw-
son Arnett are two other players to keep an eye out for on the line. Arnett returns after being lost to injury in the second game of the 2018 season. The line will be charged with protecting senior quarterback Will Hilton. Hilton threw for over 900 yards a year ago and is looking for more this season. He has a stable of receivers to sling it to, including Jake Trice and Gavyn Rogers. Two seniors, Graham Dickson, a 6’3” wide out, and Zack Carter will provide Hilton with even more targets. Standing 6’4” and 250 pounds, senior Alex Schovanec will be another weapon for the Savages at tight end. Senior Jaylen Walker and sophomore Dylan Graham should see plenty of carries at the running back position. “They (Walker and Graham) are both shifty runners and will get lots of work this season,” Bullock said. On defense, Tecumseh returns seven starters, led by coordinator Larry Joubert. On the field, the defense will be led by captain Gage Boatman at linebacker. “Gage could call the defense for us – he is a three-year starter and provides leadership out on the field,” said Bullock. Boatman will be joined at linebacker with Kane Ainesworth and Graham Dickson. At the back of the defense, the Savages return all of the secondary from last season. Hilton and Clayton Rackley will man the safety spots, while Anthony O’Guinn and Jaxon Day will be the primary corners. “Day is the fastest player on the team,” said Bullock. The defensive line will have a mix of experience and youth. Senior Cody Rackley will play defensive end along with Seth
Haggard. Haggard is also a senior, but this will be his first year in the starting rotation. Ethan Rickey and Tyler Girod will man the middle of the defensive line. “We have some really big expectations this year,” said Bullock. “We are going to play a lot of guys. The kids have really worked hard and are ready to get things started.” Aron Piercy will be the receivers’ coach for the Savages and Bryce Nelson will be in charge of the offensive line. On the other side of the line, Bryce Nelson will coach the defensive front. First-year coach Patrick Cobb will take over the defensive secondary. Conner Cluck will coach the tight ends and defensive ends while Corey Welliver will be in charge of the running backs.

age of 11 yards per catch. Drae Wood does his damage on the outside, preferably, on deep routes. Up front, Bethel returns two three-year starters. Cole Dyer handles the center duties while Kaden Styles lines up next to him at the guard spot.
Senior signal-caller Gunner Smith, who broke seven school records last season and is on pace to break several more, will lead the way. He is one of eight returning starters for the Bethel offense. Smith has amassed 4,008 passing yards and 41 touchdowns in his past two seasons. He averages 200 yards passing per game.
Junior Tyler Roberts will factor into the offensive line, he started last season as a sophomore.
Smith will no doubt be looking to get the ball into the hands of weapons, senior Devin Acklin and junior Drae Wood. Acklin has 1,570 receiving yards in the past two seasons with an aver-

Kyle Fowler will coach the quarterbacks and corners. Shane Price will be the linebackers and running backs coach while Daltyn Zimmerman will lead the defensive line and receivers.
“Along with Tecumseh and McLoud, we are in one of the toughest districts in class 3A,” said Ginn. “We know going in that it is going to be a tough schedule, but the kids have bought into the weight room and are ready for the challenge.”
Bethel will open the season on the road its first two weeks with some old foes. They begin at Tecumseh then head to McLoud the following week.

Redskins striving for District 4A-2 redemption after going 1-6 By Fred Fehr Contributing Writer
McLOUD — Rusty Hall knew McLoud’s 4A-2 slate (2018) offered some stern challenges, including well-established programs like Tuttle. The Redskins did indeed incur some district bumps and bruises, going 1-6 en route to a 2-8 season. If Hall’s troops are to upgrade that district finish in 2019, they must receive a yeoman performance from their upfront personnel. “Our strength will be our line, on both sides of the ball,” Hall said. Returning starter Denzel Harris will line up at center on offense and tackle on defense. Also returning and likely
going both ways will be fellow senior Conner Cheney, who is making the move from tackle to tight end. Cheney will also be a defensive tackle. The most physical specimen on the squad is a freshman, 6-foot-2, 265-pound Tryce Lewis. His father, Tearon Lewis, was a McLoud teammate of Hall’s and Tryce’s grandfather, Allen Lewis, was a longtime Redskin coach. “Tryce is one of just two freshmen on Vype Magazine’s upper-100 player list,” Hall said. “He’s the real deal. He will probably go to college as a defensive tackle. “Tryce is big, fast, strong and smart. He was second in last year’s state junior high powerlifting meet.”
Edmond North and Mathew Chapman from Texas, could also strengthen the line play. Entering fall practice, Hall had his eyes on two junior quarterbacks, Wesley Olds and Adrian Frye. Frye, who would have been the backup QB last year, tore his ACL and didn’t play. Olds started at tight end. Whoever starts as the signal caller will have two returning receiver starters in senior Coye Campbell and junior Karson Cue. “Coye, who is very athletic, was our top receiver last year,” Hall said. Campbell also started at cornerback while Cue was the starting safety.

Seminole: Snyder and ‘The Home of Champions’ By Fred Fehr Contributing Writer
SEMINOLE — Situated in the southeast corner of Seminole’s football confines is the scoreboard –with Chieftain Stadium headlining the upper portion and Mike Snyder Field adorning the bottom portion. On the northern end of the field is a sign with several catch phases, including “The Home of Champions.” That’s been true since Snyder became Seminole’s head football coach in 1980. Snyder and coaching success are synonymous— a 1986 state championship and five state runner-up finishes (1989, 1993, 2000, 2001 and 2002).

How’s this for a brilliant Chieftain career record? Entering his 40th year at the helm, Snyder has a Chieftain career mark of 360-117 and 12 district crowns. And the state’s coaching legend is still going strong. After a 3-7 mark in 2016, just his third-ever losing season, Snyder rebounded for 8-4 and 8-3 campaigns. His upcoming squad lost 14 seniors, but the Chieftains were still selected by District 3A-3 coaches to finish fourth behind No. 1 Lincoln Christian. Any talk of Seminole’s outlook must begin with senior running back Cameron Gunville, a starter since his freshman campaign. Last year, Gunville produced over 2,000 rushing yards following a 978-yard output as a freshman, despite
missing 2 ½ games with an injury. “He is a great downhill, east-west runner and, with the plays we have, we must take advantage of that,” Snyder said. “He can also catch the ball really well and has the ability to find holes.” Although Gunville has yet to receive a Division 1 offer, Snyder doesn’t mince words when assessing his talent. “I think Cameron is as good a running back as anyone in the state. He had a good OSU camp. This could be a breakout season for him.” Gunville has five good up-front reasons why he could enjoy a banner statistical season. Returning offensive starters are Continued on pg. 20

Three returning defensive starters dot the defensive side in tackle Steven Johnson, inside linebacker Thunder Lena and safety Hunter Wurtz. Junior lineman Amauyn Conley, who tore his ACL in the spring, hopes to be a force for Snyder.
Snyder lost two-year starting quarterback Cade Hammond, who amassed 1,200-plus passing yards in 2017 and 1,400 yards in 2018. Vying for 2019 QB responsibilities are Wurtz, a senior, and sophomore Brendan Rodriguez. "Both run the ball well,” Snyder said. "Both of these guys need to understand
the passing game.” Junior Easton Wurtz will supply help at a receiver slot. Seminole’s first scrimmage was against Metro Christian after the football preview went to press. The Chieftains will also scrimmage at Holdenville before opening the campaign Sept. 6 at Harrah. Notes: • Snyder’s coaching staff is made up of offensive coordinator Shawn Snyder, defensive coordinator Blake Johnson, Wade Rigney, Shane Stanfill, Brian McAlvain, Keaton Hernandez, Thomas Bare and newcomers Royce Street and Kade Davis. • After going 5-2 in District 3A-3 last season and tying Checotah for fourth place, Seminole was defeated 3413 by Berryhill in the first round of the playoffs.

White hoping to change Maud’s 8-man fortunes By Fred Fehr Contributing Writer
team,” White said. “It’s a different vibe.
MAUD — Kenon White knows what it’s like to travel the road to an eightman state championship.
“Our younger group, freshmen and sophomores, have really bought into the weight program. Some of the kids who didn’t play much last year had some good growth spurts over the summer.”
As a Tipton High School junior in 2011, White and his teammates were the Class C runners-up. Tipton then won it all in 2012. It wasn’t a short-term run for Tipton. The last four state championship trophies reside there. For Maud, the local road has been quite a bit bumpier as White readies for his head coaching debut. Maud forged a combined 5-14 (2-7, 3-7) record the past two years under head coach Brant Hayes. When Hayes accepted the head position at Empire, White ascended to the helm after serving the last two years as Maud’s defensive coordinator. Despite the Tigers’ recent struggles, White believes the sands are shifting. “For me, this is a new type of Maud
White will employ a variation of Tipton’s spread offense, featuring a lot of zone reads and motion. A two-quarterback system is in the works. Returning signal-caller Lane Brooks, a senior, will share time with sophomore Bryce Bodkin. “Lane is very athletic,” White said. “He gives us lots of opportunities offensively and defensively with his arms and legs.” Brooks, who started his high school career last year as a junior, will also see duty at safety. Of Bodkin, White said, “He’s very ball-savvy, making good reads. He is like a coach on the field and he can make the right throws. “Both quarterbacks have become better at throwing the ball to the outside instead of the inside, just being smarter. They are really pushing each other.” When Brooks isn’t taking the snap from center, he will be used as a running back along with sophomores Bobby Joe Watson and Dylan Armstrong. “Dylan is a downhill runner, very shifty and has great hands. He’s probably our best true running back. Bobby has very good quickness,” White said. Returning two-way starters Roman Cox and Nick Grove are defensive hubs. Cox will line up at end with Grove at tackle.

But by far the biggest line player is Zeke Gage, a move-in from Little Axe who stands 6-foot, 3-inch and packs 240 pounds. “That was a nice move-in,” White said. “He’s very aggressive, very physical. He’s a hole-plugger. Roman is a very athletic player who will help on both lines. “I think we can shock some people.”

both Northwestern State at Alva and East Central at Ada. He was a linebacker and deep snapper. • Coaches Tim Collins and Jared Griffin will assist White. • Maud is scheduled to launch the season Aug. 30 against Okeene. Maud was originally scheduled to play Sasakwa, which bowed out of the game. Maud will open its home season Friday, Sept. 6 versus Bowlegs. • Maud’s 2018 victories came against Bowlegs, Sasakwa and Caddo.

Howell, Bulldogs expecting banner campaign By Fred Fehr Contributing Writer
MEEKER — DJ Howell is bullish, make that Bulldogish, about his 2019 Meeker squad.

WINNING SEASON! from your friends at
“This team has a chance to be special,” said Howell, who guided the Bulldogs to a 9-2 overall mark and 6-1 district finish last season. Howell, in his third year at the helm, has good reasons to be optimistic. The Bulldogs, who lost just four seniors, return nine starters on both sides of the ball. Five Bulldogs, including four-year starting quarterback Jacob Martin, will be two-way starters. Martin passed for 1,611 yards and 12 touchdowns to go along with 731 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. “Jacob can make plays even when things break down,” Howell said. “He’s as tough as you want, smart and great to coach. He’s so quick and elusive he can get lost in a phone booth.” Howell’s spread offense is perfectly suited for Martin and talented junior running back Caden Wolford, a 6-foot, 190-pounder. “Wolford is a Division 1 player who will probably be on the defensive side in college,” Howell said. “He is a big, physical guy who can run the ball 20 to 25 times a game and maybe break four or five of them.” Against Luther last year, Meeker faced a 3rd-and-25 situation right before halftime. Howell, playing it conservatively, called a run off tackle and Wolford broke three tackles en route to an 80-yard touchdown.
Wolford rushed for 1,504 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2018. He also caught three TD aerials while netting 259 yards.

As a linebacker, Wolford registered 54 tackles, including eight sacks. Wolford was clocked at 4.6 seconds in the 40 at a recent Rivals Camp. Martin will also be employed as a defensive back and Wolford will start at linebacker. Also going both ways will be receiver/ defensive back Dakota Gabbert, tight end/defensive end Zach Cook and tight end/outside linebacker Xavier Masquas. Gabbert produced 404 receiving yards, including three touchdowns, in 2018. “By the end of last season, Cook was a dominant defensive guy,” Howell said. ”We are going to throw him the ball more this year. “Xavier has a chance to play college ball. He’s the nicest human being ever but if you come across the middle, he will be waiting,” Howell said. Kaden Chapman, a defensive line starter last season, will be on the offensive line this time around. Returning offensive line starters are
guard Kyle Cousins, center Micheal Jessup, tackle Brendan Alexander and tackle Connor Donaho. Donaho, who weighs in at 305, could also play nose guard. Jessup will handle extra point and kickoff duties. Meeker will open its season Friday, Aug. 30 at Luther. Prague Red Devils: Hedge back in the Lincoln County coaching saddle By Fred Fehr Contributing Writer
PRAGUE – Mike Hedge got the itch and had to scratch. For 14 years, including 10 as the head coach, Hedge prowled the Meeker sidelines. In his last Bulldog edition, 2013, Hedge went 12-1 with the only loss coming to Millwood in the third round of the playoffs. “It took me about a year to watch that
film,” Hedge said. Now, following a six-year stint as an education administrator, Hedge is back in Lincoln County coaching football. Only this time, he will be 12 miles to the east as Prague’s head coach. “I got the itch last spring. My wife (Schatzi) and I wanted to know where God wanted us to go and it was Prague. wanted to coach him,” Hedge said.
“He’s one of those kids who can just do things,” Hedge said. “He could be good at chess if he really wanted to.”
When John Graham resigned his Red Devil post to coach at Muskogee, Hedge jumped at the opportunity. He is switching to a Wing-T offense with his two primary quarterbacks, senior Trevor Mills, last year’s starter, and freshman Trevor McGinnis. “He (Mills) was asked to do some things in last year’s offense he wasn’t comfortable doing,” Hedge said. “He is very athletic and competitive. I think our system, which will be wide open, will help him.” McGinnis, as a ninth grader, is 6-foot-0, 185 pounds. “He is ready, physically, to play right now,” Hedge said. “Both players are good runners and adequate passers. They aren’t pocket passers.”
Also drawing praise from Hedge were tackle Conner Davis, center Alex Tapia and linebacker Brayden Davis. “We will be really young,” Hedge said. “Over the next two years, we just graduate a combined five kids. Not many of our players can drive yet.” The Red Devils will launch the 2019 season Friday, Sept. 6 at Cashion. Notes: • Hedge started his prep coaching career at Luther before serving two years as Depew’s main man. He then returned to Luther as a defensive coordinator before going to Meeker. • Hedge’s coaching staff is comprised of Tony Willoughby, secondary/quarterback/ receivers; AJ. Woodall, defensive line/ running back; Lance Blocker, linebacker/ receivers; Wally Newport, offensive line/ defensive line.
Senior Branom Bailey heads the running back corps. “Branom has some really good wheels,” Hedge said. “He is a good Wing-T player.” Hedge is also high on junior running back Tyler Carpenter. “Tyler’s about a buck 129 pounds, soaking wet,” Hedge said. “I’m not easily impressed by speed but he impressed me.” Sophomore Trip Davis, who could be called on to play running back, wide receiver and cornerback, muscled up 17 pounds over the

Considering last year’s District 2A-2 preseason coaches' poll, Prague’s 5-5, no-playoff result was a big disappointment. Prague had been picked to finish third in the eight-team district.

Chandler Lions seek return to limelight with returning starters football limelight.
By Keven Scrutchins Contributing Writer
CHANDLER- High expectations. The Chandler Lions are looking to make some noise in the 2019 football campaign. With nine returning starters, both on offense and defense, and an incoming freshman class that is full of speed the Lions are hoping to present problems for the opposition. “Last year we were looking to make it into the playoffs, but we fell short,” said head coach Jack Gray. “This year we are looking to win the district.” Gray was a freshman when the Lions hoisted the gold ball in 2005. Now, in his second year at the helm he is looking to get Chandler back into the
“I want to change the culture back to where it was — a culture of winning,” said Gray. The Lions will rely heavily on an offensive and defensive line that has both talent and depth. The line should provide openings for tailback Dylan McKinney. Last season McKinney rushed the ball 197 times and gained 1,058 yards for an average of 105 yards per game. Wide out Javon Frazier should add some firepower at the receiver position. Frazier missed all of the 2018 season after an arm injury abruptly ended his season before it began. “We will be adding a lot of athletes and speed, with Frazier coming back and our incoming freshman class,” said Gray.
The major question mark for the Lions on offense will be at the quarterback slot. “We don’t have a junior or senior quarterback on the roster,” said Gray. “But, our nine returners are battle-tested and have had a good off season — that should really help us out,” Gray said. Much like the offensive side of the ball, the defensive strength will come up front. “Our front six should be very strong,” said Gray. Look no further than senior linebacker Taylor Clagg to find that strength. Clagg led the Lions with 125 tackles a year ago and is ranked as the number one linebacker in Class 2A, by VYPE magazine. The Lions finished 5-5 a season ago in Gray’s first year at the Lions’ helm. Once again, Gray will call the plays on offense. This year Neil Bacon is back on the staff and will command the Chan-
dler defense. Bacon was the Chandler head coach in 2008, the last time the Lions played for a title. Gray was his QB on that squad. The two should pack a pretty powerful punch. Fred Perry has joined the staff and will coach the defensive line. Rob Garber will be in charge of the line backing crew. The receivers will be led by Chad Slane. Two volunteer coaches will also be in the mix. Justin White will coach the running backs and secondary, while Caleb Jones will assist on the defensive side of the ball. The Lions open the year on the road against the Stroud Tigers on Aug. 29. Check the Daily Paper for Chandler's Football Roster!
