THE CULTURE OF TECUMSEH FOOTBALL IS CHANGING By Adam Ewing adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise
The moment Ty Bullock stepped foot on the Tecumseh High School campus, he was determined to bring the Savages' football program back from the depths. “One of the most important things for us is we have built relationships with our players,” Bullock said. “All of our staff is genuine and cares about our athletes. Our kids would run through a wall for us and ultimately that's what we want.” In 2016 the Savages went 1-10. Last year, under the leadership of Bullock, the Savages improved to 4-6. One of the main things Bullock credits is injecting enthusiasm back into the program. “When I first got here I met with all the athletes, we even met with those who weren't out for sports,” Bullock said. “I told them even if they don't come out for football they could be in the stands on Friday nights.” The season before Bullock, there were around 35 kids out for football. To start this season, Tecumseh has around 80 players on the roster.
“It's a day-by-day process, and we are still rebuilding, but with that many kids out for football you can feel something special is on the horizon.”
of lineman. They are big, strong kids and that's a blessing to have. Hopefully our size and strength can do some damage.”
For the students who don't go out for football, Bullock encouraged them to cheer on their friends and peers.
The offensive line will be anchored by senior Caeden Shirey.
“There is nothing better than Friday night football,” Bullock said. “I want to give all the kids a chance to be part of something special.” There was a quarterback battle early in camp between senior Caleb Kelsey and junior Will Hilton. Recently, Hilton was named the starter. “Will has all the intangibles you want in a quarterback,” Bullock said. “His leadership ability is second to none. He's an accurate passer and he's one of the toughest kids we have.” Running the ball is Tecumseh's bread an butter. With that said, the Savages have a surplus of lineman. Starters average 290-pounds on the offensive line. “Games are won in the trenches and from an offensive standpoint we are really going to hang our hat on our group
The 6'1" 275-pound wrestler just so happens to be one of Tecumseh’s best football players. Coach Bullock raved about his nastiness on the gridiron. The stalwart of the Tecumseh front line tore his ACL early in his high school career and rebounded to start all 10 games for the Savages last season. Even through Tecumseh is a run-heavy team, Bullock feels his team can let it fly on occasion. “I think we can efficiently pass the ball,” Bullock said. “Our run game will set up the pass and will keep defenses on their heels.” The Tecumseh Savages' summer pride program was a success, Bullock said. “We play a ton of kids so with that my philosophy is to get as many kids involved as possible,” Bullock said. “We will have a rotation in our backfield and at
receiver. In return, the competition level in practice is amped up. Our guys know there is always someone trying to take their spot and that's a great problem to have.” New to the coaching staff this year is Larry Joubert and Phillip Spess. Jourbert will serve as the defensive coordinator and Spess as a defensive assistant. Bullock is excited about the energy and expertise both bring to the program, he said. Looking forward to the season, Bullock is determined to get the Savages back to the playoffs. “We are still in the infant stage of the program where we can't take anybody for granted,” Bullock said. “We have been taken for granted for so long. Last year we were homecoming for four teams. We have to get the respect back. Toughness can win you a lot of games and that is the mindset we are going to come with every Friday.” Tecumseh's first game is Aug. 31 at home against Bethel. In week two, Tecumseh will host area powerhouse Seminole. Both games are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.

CHIEFTAINS MORE SENIOR ORIENTED IN 2018 By Fred Fehr
SEMINOLE — Mike Snyder did some serious soul searching after his 2016 Seminole squad slumped to 3-7, just the third losing campaign in an illustrious Chieftain coaching career. “I’m one of those guys that believes when things go bad, it goes directly back to the head coach,’ said Snyder one year ago. Considering his Hall of Fame numbers, Snyder shouldn’t have to apologize for much of anything. Last year’s 8-4 comeback brought his career mark to a sparkling 353-114 since
taking the helm in 1980, including a state championship (1986), five state runner-ups (1989, 1993, 2000, 2001, 2002) and 12 district titles. “Last year, we got a few more breaks than the year before and the kids concentrated on getting back to where we should and need to be,” Snyder said. “I think we pretty much won every game we should have.” Snyder, with 14 seniors this year compared to six in 2017, is optimistic entering his 39th year at he helm. “I thought we had a great spring and
a good Tulsa team camp. We got more mature. “We are hopefully ahead of the game offensively with six or seven starters coming back. When your starting quarterback is back, you should be ahead of the game.” Senior signal caller Cade Hammond is coming off a 13-touchdown, 1,264 passing resume despite missing three games. “Cade’s arm is exceptional and there isn’t a ball he can’t throw,” Snyder said. “He needs to improve on reading defenses. Our passing foundation is built on a lot of level routes, deep and underneath. He just needs to know where to throw the ball.” Hammond has drawn scholarship offers from Northeastern at Tahlequah and East Central at Ada. Snyder has two quality running backs in senior Jamon Dennis and junior Cameron Gunville. Dennis, a starter the last two seasons, rushed for 870 yards

and 14 touchdowns in 2017. “Jamon has the ability to make people miss,” Snyder said. ‘He is a pretty smart, intelligent player who has good quickness and lateral movement.” Gunville, a starter since his freshman campaign, produced 12 touchdowns and 978 rushing yards in 2017, despite missing 2 ½ games because of an injury. “Cameron is more of a downhill rusher with a lot of strength and speed,” Snyder said. “He’s capable of playing at the Division 1 level.” Four returning offensive line standouts are back, including three-year starter Callen Rigney at right tackle. “Callen needs to be the guy up front that corrects things and gets things Continued on page 8

going,” Snyder said. “He has good size and is fundamentally sound.” Other returning offensive line starters are right guard Terry Walker, center Luke Wieck and left guard Kaden Allison. Returning wide receiver Chico Baker is probably Seminole’s most versatile player. Defensively, Seminole is anchored by its four down linemen — junior tackles Steven Johnson and Amauyn Conley along with ends Derek Wolf, a senior, and Jared Stewart, a junior. Conley has big-time size (6-3, 265). “He has good feet. He just needs to be a little more aggressive,” Snyder said. “We’re pretty good up front.” Senior Mark Beauford, a three-year starter, heads the linebacker corps. Beauford recorded 93 tackles last year.

Player of the Year, is coming off a six-interception campaign. Baker returned two interceptions and one fumble recovery for touchdowns. “We need to find two linebackers and one secondary guy to shore up our defense," Snyder said. Kaiden Johnson, who played at Seminole as a sophomore before moving to Shawnee, is back at Seminole for his senior year. Johnson could see wide receiver and linebacking duties. A freshman, Jackson Smith, will handle kickoff and point-after attempts. Gunville will again handle punting duties. “Our kicking game will be better,” Snyder said.

Coming off an 8-4 Red Devil debut in 2017, Graham welcomes back four returning starters on both sides of the ball. Jake Schultz, who posted a banner junior campaign at tight end — 46 receptions for 1,107 yards and 12 touchdowns — and 56 tackles, four sacks and four interceptions as a linebacker – made a big summer statement. Schultz added almost 40 pounds to pack a 220 punch. “Jake is very, very long,” Graham said. “Defensively, he is very hard to block because he can shed blockers and he has a lot of range. Offensively, he is a willing blocker with deceiving speed — every bit a 4.6 kid who is very smooth.” Schultz has already experienced a lot of interest from smaller Div. 1 schools like Central Arkansas, Abilene Christian and Stephen F. Austin.
Two-way senior tackle Dalton Cooper, who weighed 250 last season, is tipping the scales at 285 on a massive 6-6 frame. “Dalton is a big kid who is a very good player. He will stay after you and play right through the whistle,” Graham said.

Senior Seth Cooper, a center, and Isaiah Camren, a senior tackle, are also returning offensive starters. Seth Cooper was a guard in 2017. Joining Dalton Cooper and Schultz as returning defensive starters are juniors Branom Bailey at cornerback and Elijah Ramos at linebacker. Continued on page 18

Graham became the recipient of a vital move-in, Shawnee’s Brayden McGinnis, who will be featured at H-back and linebacker. “At 245-250, Brayden is a very physical kid who will blow kids up,” Graham said. “And he has great, phenomenal hands.”

NOTES • After serving as an undergraduate coach under Houston Nutt (2 years) and Bobby Petrino (2 years) at Arkansas, Graham spent two years at Northeastern State at Tahlequah as a tight ends coach (2010) and a receivers coach (2011). He then spent five years as a Muskogee High School assistant, the last three coming under Rafe Watkins. “Rafe is a heck of a coach. I learned a lot from him," Graham said.
Isaac Bloomer, a Red Devils basketball standout, should enhance the secondary corps and also contribute as a wide receiver.
• Prague moved to District 2A-2, joining Lincoln County entrants Meeker and Chandler. In a 2A-2 coaches poll, Prague was picked to finish third in the eight-team field behind Jones (13-1 last year) and Okemah (7-4). Meeker (4-7) was selected fourth, followed by Holdenville (4-7), Chandler (3-8), Kellyville (4-6) and Henryetta (1-9).
The quarterback chores will be handled by junior Trevor Mills. “Trevor will manage the game well. He stands in there and delivers the ball,” Graham said.
• The 2017 Red Devils were 5-1 in district play, losing only to Jones. Prague scored with eight seconds left to defeat Perkins-Tryon in the opening round of the playoffs before being ousted by Sulphur in the second weekend.

Fresh off a 5-6 campaign and a 2A playoff birth, the Meeker Bulldogs hope to return to the playoffs once again. “We were very fortunate to make the playoffs last year and with all the guys coming back, I feel comfortable with these young men and they've done an incredible job of competing,” coach DJ Howell said. Whenever a team loses their starting quarterback, the rest of the athletes have to pick up the slack. Howell said
his team was able to use last year as a learning experience while picking up some wins on the way to a playoff appearance. This offseason the Bulldogs worked extensively in order to continue the upward trend of success. “We've done a great job of working hard this offseason,” Howell said. “The kids have done a good job of getting bigger and stronger in the weight room. The players who were playing other sports were dedicated as well.” As a second-year coach at Meeker,
Howell is starting to get through to his players and credits all of their hard work along the way. “The guys understand what I want from them in terms of how to compete and prepare each week,” Howell said. “Our numbers have been pretty consistent. Throughout 2A getting more than 40 guys is a challenge but we have a high standard if you want to be involved in the program.” Junior Jacob Martin returns under center for the Bulldogs. Martin is a three-year starter who missed the last four games in 2017 with mono. He led the Bulldogs with 1,278 yards
and threw for 11 touchdowns. He also ran for 570 yards and three scores. “He's very dynamic and can make a lot of plays with his arm and his legs,” Howell said. “The best thing about Jacob is he's very competitive. I feel we are in a good position at quarterback.” Meeker will feature Caden Wolford at running back. Howell feels he can carry the rock early and often for the Bulldogs. Wolford had a different role as a freshman, only carrying the football six times for 13 yards. He Continued on page 22

did show some ability to catch the football, recording six receptions for 161 yards and one touchdown. “Caden worked extensively this offseason,” Howell said. “He looks good every day in practice and has the ability to break of big plays whenever he touches the football. I'm really confident he's a guy who can carry the mail for us.” JJ Bloomer will be another back the Bulldogs will rely on. As a freshman, Bloomer carried the ball five times for 42 yards. He was able to find the endzone one time in his first year of varsity football. The Bulldogs started the 2017 campaign as a spread offense, but when the starting quarterback goes down, plans change. With leading receiver Dawson Stansberry returning, the Bulldogs will look to get him involved in their quest for another playoff run. Stansberry had 653 yards and seven touchdowns a year ago. “With our weapons back, I feel like we can be really successful,” Howell said. “I feel comfortable with Jacob getting Dawson the ball. Dawson is a fast kid and has bought in to the program. I feel like he's only gotten better and expect him to be really productive for us.” On the offensive line, the Bulldogs return three starting lineman. Jeremy Ellis will be the anchor of the front five. Brendan Alexander has developed into one of the strongest lineman, Howell said. The third returner is Kyle Cousins, who solidifies the interior line. The defensive line will feature many of the same athletes. Xavier Masquas will start at one of the defensive end positions. Linebackers Noah Breedlove and JJ Bloomer return as starters. Jarrett Marks and Dakota Gabbert will help the defensive backfield in the quest for another playoff run. Meeker's first game is Aug. 24 at home against Luther. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

LIONS TO RELY ON RUNNING GAME By Adam Ewing adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise
First-year head coach Jack Gray is still implementing his system leading up to a week one tilt with Stroud. Gray served as a volunteer coach the previous two seasons at Chandler High School. “We've stuck to a few things that worked last year, but we are bringing back a few things that worked when I played here,” Gray said. “The kids are starting to find their identity and we are finally turning the page.” With the Lions getting a late start in terms of who was going to be their head coach, Gray feels as though his team is picking up the game plan. “I try not to bring in too much new stuff,
so we've had limited practices and it's been tough but the kids are starting to buy in,” Gray said. Chabon Anderson will start at quarterback for the Lions. “When Chabon is on the field, he's the best athlete almost every week,” Gray said. “He's played running back so he's not your typical quarterback. He gets downhill running the ball and can still make all the throws.” Running backs Dylan McKinney and Kobe Norton will be the duel threat in the backfield. McKinney is the big power back and Norton is the speedy big-play threat.

“Basically we have a two-headed monster in our backfield and have a good mix of runners this year,” Gray said. The offensive line is relatively young, but has a bunch of experience. Slade Messer is the only senior protecting Anderson. The rest of the group is a mix of juniors and sophomores that have a bunch of in-game experience.

has the potential to play at the college level.” On defense, there will be a lot of the same players on the front line. “We have a couple guys who will rotate in and keep everyone fresh,” Gray said.

“Some of our younger guys are starting to mature and get some experience,” Gray said. “They might not have a ton of experience winning games, but they are putting in the work to succeed in the future.” Dylan Mahan will be the primary receiver in the Chandler offense, Gray said. “I think Dylan will show out for us this year,” Gray said. “He has a division one type talent. Anderson and Mahan highlight the defense, Gray said. “He's a downhill guy on both sides of the ball. He can really put a hit on receivers.” The Lions have a goal of making the playoffs this season.
“I want to see a culture change,” Gray said. “We have been getting more physical so now I think it's time to get in the playoffs and win some games.” Chandler's first game is Thursday at home. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
