LOCAL AND STATE-WIDE ONGOING EVENTS & EXHIBITS:
THIS WEEKEND! 2018 Wildlife Expo Planes, Trains, and Automobiles September 22nd-23rd • Lazy E Arena near Guthrie
October 6th • 8:00 am - 7:00 pm Santa Fe Depot
How about spending a weekend fishing, shooting clay targets and learning about wildlife — all for free?
See planes, trains and automobiles during the first Saturday in October!
Since 2005, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation has presented the Wildlife Expo to encourage people to get outdoors, to educate the public, and to preserve and promote the future of Oklahoma’s hunting and fishing heritage. Wildlife Expo provides an opportunity to learn about the Wildlife Department’s different management activities and about enforcement of wildlife laws, as well as learn about other organizations, agencies, landowners and businesses that play a significant role in conserving Oklahoma’s wildlife as well as preserving the hunting and fishing heritage. The Expo will emphasize educational opportunities, skills and stewardship necessary to ensure proper wildlife and land management through responsible hunting, fishing, and outdoor skill techniques. Visitors are invited to interact with Wildlife Department personnel — the stewards who manage, protect and enhance the state’s wildlife resources. No matter what your favorite hobbies are or how old you are, there is something at Expo for everyone. Featured events include family fishing clinics, Shotgun Training Education Program, and Archery in the Schools. Other outdoor activities at Expo include a pellet rifle range, dog training demonstration area, bowfishing, creating natural art, Dutch oven cooking, and many more. You can cool off inside the arena, where dozens of booths will allow you to learn more about the Wildlife Department’s wildlife and habitat management activities, and get to know some of the Department’s conservation partners and Expo sponsors. The Oklahoma Land Access Program and Operation Game Thief are among many Department booths. Partners including Terry’s Taxidermy, Oklahoma Mesonet and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, along with many more, will have booths with folks waiting for you to stop and visit. New this year are selfie stations, which will be found throughout the grounds. Instead of taking your instaperfect picture in the middle of a crowd, head to one of the four themed selfie stations. Two will be inside and two outside. Make sure you put the tag #WildlifeExpo on your photos! Expo hours will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Everything sponsored by the Wildlife Department is free, including parking. Lazy E Arena vendors will be selling food and drinks throughout the arena and grounds. For more information, go to www.wildlifedepartment.com/expo.
THIS WEEKEND!

Due to construction, there will be no activities at the airport this year. There will be food and fun activities aimed at lots of family fun. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles will be at the Santa Fe Depot where the fun will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be HO scale model trains and a player piano inside the depot, trackless train rides, a pony carousel, petting zoo and many other hands-on activities for all to enjoy. Music, gunfighters, reenactors, and the Wild Shawnee Saloon Show along with many other activities and entertainers will last throughout the day. OKM's Oktoberfest: Experience a German Folk Festival Dress up in your favorite Bavarian folklore clothes and head to OKM’s Oktoberfest from 4 to 11 p.m. Oct. 6 outside on Dewey Avenue between Fourth and Fifth streets in downtown Bartlesville. Expect to find all the flair and flavors of the traditional German festival. “OKM is very excited this year to continue the tradition of having Oktoberfest celebrated outdoors,” said Mary Lynn Mihm, OKM Music’s Board Chairwoman. “We believe this creates a festive atmosphere for all to enjoy wonderful German music, food, dancing, games, and lots of children’s activities.” “Oktoberfest wouldn’t be complete without the beloved ‘chicken dance,’ said Mihm. “We hope guests will enjoy listening to some fabulous polka bands while sipping on traditional Oktoberfest wine and beer.”
Besides a costume contest, guests can take photos behind a Bavarian cutout. Adults will also want to try their skill at the traditional German games: Brat toss, Hammerschlagen, Beer Stein competition, and a Beer Stein race. You will want to find team members for the Brat toss and Beer Stein race. Check out the website for more details and sign up forms. There are numerous children’s activities. They can play Torwand, which is a traditional soccer game; join the Kazoo parade; play Pick the Duck; or get their
faces painted. In addition, OKM is proud to present Le theatre de Marionette from Dallas, Texas who will be performing two shows of “Hansel and Gretel” in Ambler Hall. This is a must see event. Local vendors will add a festive touch with specialty items to purchase such as honey, German steins, apple butter, Neon signs and more. Don’t forget to buy $10 raffle tickets for an opportunity to win an Apple Watch, Apple Air Pods, a Yeti filled with German Goodies, a Tub filled with German beer or a signed print, “Morning at the Sixteenth,” by artist, Larry Dyke. All proceeds raised during the event benefit OKM’s year-round children’s programming and will offset the costs of the Festival and other concert events.
Several food trucks will be on hand with authentic German food including pretzels, sausage and hot dots, Schnitzel-on-a-stick, potato salad and strudel. Guests will enjoy a beer garden serving cocktails, wine and beer. Soft drinks and water will also be available.

Five ways
to have fun this weekend
In theaters this weekend is “The House with a Clock in Its Walls” rated PG and based on the popular children’s novel about an orphaned young boy who aids his magical uncle (Jack Black) in locating a clock with the power to bring about the end of the world; “Fahrenheit 11/9" a R-rated documentary by Michael Moore about the Trump era; “Life Itself” a R-rated romantic drama from the creator of the hit TV show “This is Us” about the unexpected twists of in the lives of a young New York couple that create reverberations that echo over continents and through lifetimes; and R-rated comedy-western “The Sisters Brothers” starring John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix as the titular duo of assassins who in 1850s Oregon are pursuing a gold prospector; and “Colette” an R-rated period drama based upon the life of the French novelist Colette (Keira Knightley) who was pushed by her husband to write novels under his name but later fights to make her talents known, challenging gender norms.
2. September is National Piano Month, a holiday started in 1991 by the National Piano Foundation. The piano is widely employed in classical, jazz, traditional and popular music, so celebrate by signing up for lessons or making a playlist of your favorite piano songs such as Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer.”
3. Saturday is Hobbit Day, a day that’s also part of Tolkien Week. Hobbit Day
commemorates the birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. Some libraries and bookstores will be holding events, or plan your own Hobbit birthday bash!
4. Banned Books Week begins Sunday. Head to your local library for more information, or Google books that are commonly banned (“Harry Potter” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” for example). For this year’s celebration, the theme “Banning Books Silences Stories,” is a reminder that everyone needs to speak out against the tide of censorship.
5.
It’s another big sports weekend, so get out those TV listings and start planning your TV time. NASCAR’s championship playoffs continue with races at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Other sports on TV this weekend include college football, NFL, MLB, soccer and more. — More Content Now

Shawnee vs. Sand Springs By Adam Ewing
adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise
It's homecoming week and the Wolves need a win. Shawnee (0-3) will host the Sand Springs Sandites (1-2) today with the hopes of securing the seeminlgy elusive first victory of the 2018 campaign.
The lone bright spot for the Wolves in the 47-7 loss at Carl Albert was a 35-yard touchdown from Heath Hunter to Scout Cawvey. In the previous two games, Shawnee has been outscored 89-14. The Sandites are 1-0 versus schools in Oklahoma with a 45-24 victory over Putnam City. They're 0-2 against teams from Arkansas and Texas. Shawnee's starting quarterback Heath Hunter is the area's second leading passer with 458 yards and four touchdowns. He's struggled as of late with three interceptions in the last two games, but a lot of that can be credited to the offensive line struggling to protect their signal caller. Trenton Skinner and Scout Cawvey rank third and ninth in the area in terms of receiving yards. Skinner has 234 yards and two scores, while Cawvey has upped his production each week and has 153 yards and a touchdown. If Shawnee is to win this week, they will need to protect the quarterback and the defense, that gave up five rushing touchdowns last week, needs to step up and keep the opposition out of the end zone. Kickoff for the homecoming game will be 7:30 p.m. at Jim Thorpe Stadium.

Other area games scheduled for Sept. 21 By Adam Ewing
adam.ewing@news-star.com Twitter: @aethefranchise
Sulphur (2-1) vs. Bethel (1-2) – Friday 7 p.m.
Bethel's passing game puts up elite numbers. Gunner Smith and his receivers, Drae Wood and Devin Acklin, all rank in the top of their positions statistical categories. Matthew Melter recorded his first triple digit rushing game last week. If the defense can get a few stops the Wildcats have a chance to improve to .500 this week.
Maud (2-1) vs. Yale (3-0) – Friday 7:30 p.m.
Both Maud and Yale put up a ton of points. So far this season the Tigers outscored their opponents 120-40 and Yale beat their opponents and a pace of 122-42. With both teams capable of hanging 50-plus points on the board, this should be a shootout.
Chandler (2-1) vs. Jones (2-1) – Friday 7:30 p.m.
Chandler runs the ball with relative success. They're a hard-nosed team that relies upon Dylan McKinney and Chabon Anderson to pick up a bulk of their yards on the ground. McKinney is fourth in the area in rushing with 332 yards and three scores.
Prague (2-1) vs. Holdenville (2-1) – Friday 7 p.m.
The Red Devils picked up their second consecutive win last week and have a good shot at making it three in a row this week. Expect Brayden McGinnis to carry the ball 25-30 times. If the passing game gets going, Jake Schultz can make plays with the ball in his hands.
Seminole (3-0) vs. Roland (1-2) – Friday 7:30 p.m.
The Chieftains should continue their unbeaten streak with another blowout victory over Roland this week. Seminole has outscored its opponents 124-21 through three games this season. Roland does get after the quarterback, recording five sacks in three games.
Tuttle (3-0) vs. Tecumseh (2-1) – Friday 7:30 p.m.
Tecumseh plays smash mouth football. With rain in the forecast for Friday, the Savages have a good shot of pulling of an upset of undefeated Tuttle. Tecumseh has two backs with 250-plus yards on the season in Micah Boyce and Jaylen Walker. Last week, Tyler Bingham filled the stat sheet, recording 10 tackles, two sacks, one fumble recovery and one blocked punt.
Roman Cox (24) - Maud
