Experience helps Wells coach through every situation By Kent Bush
Wendy Wells knows what people mean when they say, “God works in mysterious ways.” Her experience has taught her that. “All I’ve gone through, the good and the bad, has taught me something I didn’t know,” Wells said. She said when she was a high school player in Fort Cobb, Okla. she was a great athlete and learned what it meant to lead a team. But when she tore her knee up and lost a season to injury, she learned what it meant to work hard even when she wasn’t getting to use her skills in games. Then when she came back from that injury and was a step slower than she was before she got hurt, she learned to play the game she loved differently. “I learned that I didn’t know the game like I should and through the injury, I learned how to play another way,” she said. Those experiences have helped her during her 11 years as the head coach in Shawnee. She knows how to coach the great talents - more than a dozen Lady Wolves have gone on to play at a high level after graduation. She knows how to help athletes who suffer injuries to stay a part of the team and work hard to get back into action. She learned angles and techniques that help the players who don’t have elite skills so that they can still play important roles on great teams. Despite her injury in high school, Wells was able to reach the pinnacle of her sport. Before she married, Wendi Willits was a high school player of the year, played for the University of Arkansas and even played for the 2001 WNBA champion Los Angeles Sparks before her playing career ended. At Arkansas, she still holds the record for three-pointers made in her career with 316. She also has the record for the most threes in a game with nine against conference foe Georgia. She is among the all-time leaders at Arkansas in career rebounds (39th), field goals made (11th), field goal attempts (5th), free throw percentage (4th at 81.8%), threepoint percentage (2nd at 41%), and assists (20th). One thing she teaches her players who

say they want to play in college is that the game is very different than they are accustomed to. At that level, every player is an elite athlete and hard work often makes the difference. “Some of my friends in coaching tell me that playing hard is becoming a trait they have to seek,” Wells said. She said many of the players don’t show up on campus ready for what they will have to do to earn and keep a spot on the team. That hard work is necessary because every year brings new recruits hoping to play.
“Every year, they are working to find someone to come in and do your job better than you can,” Wells said. “If you aren’t working and getting better every day, you will lose your spot.” Danielle and Darrel Fields said Wells’ history as a player and track record as a coach were exciting for them when circumstances brought their daughter Lauren back to Shawnee from Deer Creek. “She was a big reason we were glad Lauren would be playing here when we moved back to Shawnee,” Danielle said. “We knew she would be able to work with Lauren and help her get better.” Wells also learned how to deal with issues that are beyond your control in her career. Even though she worked hard, she still got hurt. Her work ethic didn’t keep her from getting cut in the WNBA when her team de-
cided she wasn’t tall enough. Her height had always been sufficient before, but when that changed it forced her to find another way. She worked in Florida for a while and she coached at Western Georgia before she became pregnant with her first child and her family moved back to Oklahoma. Coaching in college meant always being on the phone in the evenings or road trips scouting or recruiting players. It was a grind. But all of those experiences have made her a better coach and mentor for the players in her program now. “We have a lot of conversations,” she said. “We talk about why things worked or didn’t work. That process is very important for players who will be leaders on the team.” Darrell Fields said that he has seen the results of those conversations when Wells works with his daughter on her shooting or her approach to a situation. His wife agreed. “When she works with Lauren on taking more jumpers and not attacking the basket every time, she does it the next game,” Danielle said. “You can see the respect the girls have for her and her coaching.” This year’s Lady Wolves are undefeated and No. 3 in Class 6A. Wells said when the team gets into the playoffs, they know they will see different styles and skillsets than they have so far. She said players like Fields, a University of California commitment who was recently named a McDonald’s All American game nominee, and Makyra Tramble who has been a leader on the team for four years will have to play a big part for the Lady Wolves to have a good playoff run. But beyond the leading scorers, Wells said the difference will be made by the players who do smaller things. “It will take everyone,” Wells said. “These girls are getting experience every night and making progress. We have a lot of players who can step up and make a difference in a game. Those players will be the ones who do unexpected things to help us win big games.”

Fellow senior Tyler Huebert achieved career-high in points twice this season and led the team in scoring twice. The Wolves have five ranked opponents remaining on the schedule.
The Shawnee Lady Wolves continue to climb the rankings in 6A. The Lady Wolves Shawnee started the season playing seven ranked opponents. They made it through the gauntlet with relative ease, and only one game going to overtime. Lauren Fields Though 11 games, Lauren Fields led the Lady Wolves in scoring five times. Sophomore Aubrie Megehee topped Shawnee’s scoring attack on four occasions. Shawnee has six games against ranked opponents left on the schedule.

The Shawnee Swim Teams just completed their regular season with Regionals and State meets ahead. After some of the best finishes in school history last year, several SHS swimmers are set for success in the postseason. At every big meet, the Wolves and Lady Wolves have always placed in the top third of schools. Shawnee relay teams and individuals have had success at each meet. Leticia Cervantes has been a leader for the Lady Wolves. She will be a contender in post-season action. Isabel Webb has also had a lot of individual success including smashing a school record in the 100-yard backstroke. Jordyn Sateren, Aspen Chapline, and Savannah Smith have had success as individuals and on relay teams. On the boys’ side, Trent Ogden and Brodie Morris have been strong for Shawnee. Josh Coons and Kiergan Gibson are also names to watch. But Shawnee has several other swimmers who have the potential to make a splash in big meets. Both the Wolves and Lady Wolves are talented teams. Regionals are February 1 in Edmond. Shawnee is on the west side of the state for Regionals. The State meet to follow February 8. According to the OSSAA, the 24 best times in each individual event from either Regional will automatically qualify for the State Meet. For relays, the 16 best times from either Regional will advance to state.
