Words of

Gratitude Recent global events have accentuated the importance of education at both the individual and societal level. The pandemic showed us that despite the many advantages of technology, people still crave human interaction and relationships. Education provides an invaluable forum for peer relationships and crucial teacher-student mentoring. When the pandemic robbed many students across the world of this, its importance came into sharp relief. At a societal level, where basic facts are often tribally determined, and societies are increasingly polarized, education is one of the few antidotes. At Shawnigan, we believe passionately in the extraordinary power of education to foster friendship, unite across divides, and spark the curiosity to challenge, enquire and question. In short, to “spark minds, kindle hearts and forge futures.” Our strategic priorities are inspired and propelled by this, for example: • The evolution of the Shawnigan Journey that deliberately integrates academic excellence, curated experiential learning and nurturing pastoral care into a pedagogical journey that is age and stage appropriate and cumulative.

Samuel House provides the gentle entry for the youngest members of the Shawnigan community. And our state-of-the-art Ideas and Innovation Centre, for which concept design is under way, is in service of the unique Shawnigan Journey we are all aiming to create. • Enabling broad access to a Shawnigan education built on Canadian values across all aspects of diversity, both socio-economically and culturally. The diversity of the student body – in the broadest possible sense – is crucial to accomplishing Shawnigan’s mission. Donors like you are helping to make the Shawnigan Journey a reality, not only for those with the means to attend Shawnigan, but for many students from across BC and the world for whom a Shawnigan education will help unlock their potential. Thank you to each and every one of you for making an investment in the futures of the young people in our care.

Head of School I find my heart full of gratitude as I look back on the 2022-23 academic year. As part of last spring’s Annual Fund campaign, we invited members of our School community, past and present, to contribute to Samuel House – our pioneering co-educational boarding house (with one wing for girls and one wing for boys) that will enhance our outstanding Grade 8 experience at the start of the Shawnigan Journey. We are due to open the House in January and we will take the opportunity to recognize in the foyer over 150 donors who have so far generously helped to raise just under $4 million for this capital project. This upcoming year, I have asked our team – as part of the next stage of our strategic plan Project Future – to focus on both legacy giving and developing access through scholarships to a Shawnigan education. The introduction of new scholarships this year such as the Ned Larsen Scholarship, the Graham L. Anderson Legacy Scholarship and the Spirit of ’72

Scholarship helps us to deliver access to talented students within BC and the rest of Canada. There is still much to be done in this area and I look forward to connecting with those who are committed to access and diversity at the heart of Shawnigan going forward. Thank you for all your contributions and for joining us in helping to develop our School and to inspire the best in each to create the best for all. I firmly believe we are moving ahead in inspiring ways. In gratitude and with very best wishes,

Richard “Larry” Lamont Head of Shawnigan Lake School

Annual

Fund

The Shawnigan community continues to inspire us to do more, to dream big, and to find new ways for our School to benefit students, families and society. The Annual Fund campaign in the fall of 2022 focused on just that — believing in each other to make a difference. The generosity of our Annual Fund donors supported many areas of the School, from academics to arts and athletics, and every gift had an impact. The campaign drew inspiration from a quotation from German educator Kurt Hahn: “There is more in us than we know, if we can be made to see it; perhaps for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less.” We invited you to think about a staff member who made a difference during their time at the School and in turn helped you make a difference in the world, and to keep that person in mind as you made a donation. The response from the community was outstanding, propelled by an increase in young alumni donors, who used the opportunity to reflect on someone at Shawnigan who helped show them that there was more in them than they initially believed.

Legacy

Giving We are grateful to the many benefactors who have joined the Legacy Society by leaving a gift to the School in their wills. After considering the needs of your family, providing a gift to Shawnigan in your will helps the School fulfill its mission. This can include attracting and retaining students from a wide cross-section of society through the creation of an endowment fund for a scholarship or bursary. It could be a gift to support library collections or the academic program of your choice, or perhaps it reflects your passion for another aspect of the School that you remember fondly.

Some donors choose to leave a “Living Legacy” – a donation made while a donor is still alive. A compelling reason for a donor to create a Living Legacy is the satisfaction one receives when their gift helps current students while they are still alive. We are grateful to the Class of 1972, who celebrated the 50th anniversary of their graduation by announcing the creation of the Spirit of ’72 Fund and a scholarship to support students who need financial assistance. For more information, please contact Hilary Abbott, Advancement Associate at habbott@shawnigan.ca or 250-715-8565.

Samuel

House

Shawnigan is putting the finishing touches on a successful fundraising campaign for Samuel House — our groundbreaking co-educational Grade 8 boarding house — at the same time as we are putting the finishing touches on the House itself. You have helped us raise $3.8 million – the most philanthropic support Shawnigan has ever received for the construction of a new residence – thanks in large part to naming opportunities within the House that allow donors to become part of Shawnigan history by inscribing their names or those of loved ones on rooms or other parts of the facility. We will continue to accept donations to this campaign until December 31, 2023. Grade 8 students will move in from their current Stanton and Levien Houses, and Samuel House will

15

be their home for our youngest students beginning in January 2024. A grand opening and donor appreciation event will be held in May 2024, in conjunction with the Board of Governors’ meeting, the Shawnigan Regatta and the Scholars’ Luncheon. We welcome all donors and interested community members to attend. It has been lovely to see the warmth and love for Gaynor and Rhodri Samuel as many of you sent tributes to the much-admired House namesakes who have done so much to inspire the Shawnigan community over their decades of exemplary service. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this exciting Shawnigan project. Learn more about Samuel House

Your voices have touched hearts all across the world. Shawnigan would not be what it is today without the time you have both dedicated year after year. My life was altered in the very best way by the both of you and your legacy will live on forever. – Thomas Fyfe ’17

Scholarships Several new scholarships were funded this year, helping Shawnigan continue its efforts to provide financial assistance to deserving students from the surrounding community, across Canada, and overseas. We are extremely proud of our Impact Scholarship program, which had 12 beneficiaries during the 2022-23 school year, including students from the Cowichan Valley and Vancouver Island First Nations communities, as well as international students from Nepal, Afghanistan and Ukraine. The Graham L. Anderson Legacy Scholarship was also created in early 2022 and awarded last summer to Ava S. ’24, an outstanding student from Vancouver Island. And this fall, we are pleased to announce the Ned Larsen Scholarship, which will help students from western Canada who would be unable to attend Shawnigan without financial assistance – students from families who, for much of the School’s history, have largely formed its core constituency. Both the Ned Larsen and Graham L. Anderson scholarships were created and funded by generous donors who

17

wanted to give back and honour members of the Shawnigan community who made a major impact. Similarly, the Class of 1972 marked the 50th anniversary of their graduation by reconnecting on weekly Zoom calls and banding together to announce the creation of the Spirit of ’72 Fund in support of a scholarship for students who require financial assistance to attend Shawnigan. What a wonderful example of the Shawnigan alumni community in action! It is both a point of pride and a priority for Shawnigan that we are able to provide financial assistance to a diverse and deserving group of students. In order to fully fund $3.6 million in aid, Shawnigan should have an endowment of $60-70 million and, with this in mind, we have set the ambitious goal of adding $30 million to our endowment over the next five years. Learn more about Scholarships

My mother received a phone call from Mrs. Samuel informing me that I was the recipient of the Graham L. Anderson Legacy Scholarship. This phone call was life-changing as my desire to strive for even more became apparent, and that my efforts in this school were being recognized. Thank you again for this life-changing opportunity. – Ava S. ’24

Health &

Wellness Our commitment to the health and wellness of all students and staff remains a paramount aspect of the Shawnigan Journey. This spring, we celebrated the opening of the Sport Village, a vibrant space between the Charlie Purdey Arena and the Sportsplex, where students can connect, relax and stay active through a variety of recreational athletic pursuits that will help them maintain their physical, mental and emotional health. The Sport Village is the result of the generosity of several current families, the thoughtful leadership of our Board of Governors, and the efforts of our Maintenance, Grounds, and Athletics teams. We would like to express particular gratitude to the Jones and Ketch families for supporting the project so generously. Students continue to have increasing access to a variety of counselling and mental/emotional health services over and above the dedicated support that they receive, as always, from House staff, teachers, and coaches. We are grateful to the donors that have

19

stepped forward in support of this important area. Results from Shawnigan’s 2023 Health & Wellness Survey show that the School is moving in the right direction with regard to the well-being of the student body. The survey indicated that efforts to support students academically have been successful, and that belonging and community support are strong at Shawnigan. Students are taking advantage of the resources available to them at the School. In line with our commitment to wellness, a new WellBeing Centre is being created to provide a dedicated space for connecting people and programs. This Centre is set to open in early 2024 and will serve as a unique and special space on campus where students can engage in various activities and initiatives that support their overall mental and physical health. Innovation &

Sustainability Innovation, creativity and digital literacy – areas that are vital to developing students who will succeed in an ever-changing world – all continue to thrive at Shawnigan. Shawnigan donors have been supporting the C.A.S.E. (Communications, Arts, Sciences & Entrepreneurship) group of programs for years, inspired by the career-oriented, experiential learning provided to students and the matching grant from the Bradley Family Foundation. C.A.S.E. has funded many major projects on campus, including a monthslong effort this past year that made improvements to the School’s livestreaming capabilities and provided students with access to industry-standard technology. Concept development also continues for a state-ofthe-art Ideas & Innovation Centre and builds on the success of C.A.S.E. programs over the last decade. Environmental stewardship remains a key focus of Shawnigan's programming, which includes our fish hatchery, waste management and composting initiatives, and the Growing Dome. We are grateful to the Brew Creek Centre for their contribution of the Growing Dome program to campus, and now, thanks to our partners at the University of British Columbia

21

(UBC) and their School Gardens Program, we are receiving additional support through UBC's NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) grant. This is an important new strategic partnership for Shawnigan as we increase our focus on environmental and sustainability education. We are excited to welcome our new Heimbecker Inspiration Chair for Experiential Education, a position that enables the School to bring an outstanding local, national or international educator to Shawnigan for a period of time. Dr. Alexei Du Bois, currently the Director of International Learning at Hilton College in South Africa, has been granted a sabbatical from that position and will join us on campus in January 2024 to continue developing our School’s leading outdoor and experiential learning programs. Learn more about Innovation & Sustainability

With the support from generous donors, we are enhancing the opportunities that the Growing Dome provides to our students. The magic of plants, their importance to the world where we live, and an understanding of how to produce food is an integral part of the experiential education under the Dome. – Patricia Hanbridge, Horticulturist & Environmental Program Lead
