WORDS OF GRATITUDE

As an alum who received significant financial aid to attend Shawnigan Lake School, I am grateful for your tremendous support. I know from experience that your contributions transform lives.

It is a pleasure to now serve in my first year as Chair of the Board, where I can witness the generosity of the Shawnigan community as it carries forward from one generation to the next. Looking ahead, our strategic priorities continue to emphasize financial aid and endowment growth in support of our guiding purpose: to inspire the best in each to create the best in all.

Thank you for inspiring us.

Flett ’97 (Groves’) Board of Governors, Chair

Reading our 2023-24 Impact Report reminds me of the extra-ordinary community we have here at Shawnigan Lake School. Thank you for your continued support.

The carefully crafted and unique Shawnigan Journey is exciting, challenging and exhilarating for our students – and your support is vital to our delivery of it.

We remain restless in our pursuit of delivering Shawnigan's mission to Spark Minds, Kindle Hearts, Forge Futures.

Part of my delight as an educator is helping students achieve their university dreams. From being a Head of an English Faculty to Head of School, it has always brought me great joy to support students with insights, advice and their applications – and to learn of their final university choices. I was deeply touched in May 2024 when one student dropped off a T-shirt to the Head’s Office with the name of her US university splashed across the front with a little handwritten note about Shawnigan helping her to “realize her dream.”

Thank you for your invaluable support and for helping our students to realize their dreams.

KINDLES HEARTS

Supporting the health and well-being of our students and staff

The Annual Fund is a vital resource for Shawnigan’s operating budget. Funds raised directly support our strategic direction, strengthening our campus and programs, and ensure a diverse student body through scholarships and financial aid. Increasing participation across our community remains a key goal, as it reflects a collective belief in our mission and fosters a sense of unity and growth. When more members of our community – including parents, alumni, staff, and friends – participate in the Annual Fund, and choose to give back, it signifies a shared commitment to the values and future of Shawnigan.

This year, our 2024 spring appeal focused on Shawnigan’s Well-Being Centre. We know that when youth feel a sense of belonging and pride in their families, peers, and communities, they become emotionally resilient and self-assured – better equipped to handle adversity. To support this, we have developed a dedicated space for programs and services that promote mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health. In Shawnigan’s centralized Well-Being Centre, students and staff can take a break from their busy schedules, practice self-care, and seek support in a peaceful environment. This facility will complement the traditional medical services provided at our Brown Family Health Centre, ensuring comprehensive support for all members of our community throughout their Shawnigan Journey.

FORGES FUTURES

Creating a legacy for generations to come

When a donor opts to make a legacy gift and makes Shawnigan a philanthropic priority, they are choosing to give a gift of a lifetime, leaving a lasting impact for future generations at Shawnigan Lake School. One such supporter is Mike Kent ’73 (Ripley’s) who has recently included Shawnigan in his estate planning, another way to help grow Shawnigan’s endowment, secure the School’s future, and provide access for a deserving group of potential students with financial need.

“Having recently reflected on the positive influences Shawnigan has had on my life and in turn my family, my wife Rose and I decided that we were in a position to offer a meaningful gift to help others receive the same opportunity that I had. With enthusiasm, we have included Shawnigan Lake School in our Family Trust.”

– Mike Kent '73 (Ripley's)

Another type of legacy giving is to leave a “Living Legacy,” which is exactly what members of the Class of 1973 decided to do to mark 50 years since their graduation. The class gathered together for the Gold Club Luncheon in October 2023 to celebrate the milestone year by establishing the Class of ’73 Zenith Scholarship Fund, an endowment that will support access to Shawnigan for a worthy student in perpetuity. The Class of 1973 followed in the footsteps of the Class of 1972, who established a similar scholarship the previous year. This initiative will be a focus for all future Gold Club classes, and provides a meaningful way for alumni to engage with the School.

There are many different options for legacy giving, from naming Shawnigan Lake School as a beneficiary of a registered account, to a testamentary gift, to gifts of life insurance and public securities. The School is excited to be announcing a newly reimagined Legacy Giving Society with more details to be released in Spring 2025.

“I support Shawnigan because of my hopes for tomorrow. Yes, I’m an “old boy,” but it’s today’s Shawnigan that captures my imagination. The diversity. The qualities that Shawnigan instills and nurtures. The opportunity for impact that today’s Shawnigan graduates will have. My assistance helps create leverage for a better tomorrow.”

NURTURES THE SHAWNIGAN JOURNEY

Thank you for making Samuel House a reality

An unprecedented level of support from donors helped Shawnigan make history with the opening of Samuel House – Canada’s first co-ed boarding house for Grade 8 students – in February 2024. The response, both in terms of dollars raised and broad-based community participation, far exceeded anything that Shawnigan has ever achieved for the construction of a new boarding house with over $4M raised and more than 200 individual donors.

Grade 8 student Gabo C. shared at the Samuel House Ribbon Cutting: “This new House is truly incredible, and I am so grateful to be able to use and enjoy this brand-new and incredible House. I want to thank all of the donors, House Directors and staff for making this possible, and last but not least the Grade 11 mentors.”

Samuel House is a major milestone in Shawnigan’s 100-plus-year history, and it will serve as a supportive foundation for our youngest students as they begin their new life at Shawnigan. Grade 8s have had separate Houses from the other grades for several years already – the girls in Stanton House since 2019 and the boys in Levien House since 2020 – allowing them to adapt to boarding school life and strengthening the students and the School as a whole by fostering connections before they move on to their senior Houses. Shawnigan is immensely proud of its Grade 8 program, which is carefully crafted to provide a nurturing environment for the youngest students and provide them with a strong beginning to their Shawnigan Journey.

“My time at Shawnigan altered the trajectory of my life. It opened up new opportunities in athletics, academics, and activities and created a core group of friendships lasting more than 40 years. When I think about all the organizations that need financial assistance, my first priority is taking care of the ones that have taken care of me. Shawngian is at the top of that list."

– Garth Friesen ’87 & Jeannie Friesen, Samuel House donors

CREATES THE BEST FOR ALL

Changing the future one student at a time

Shawnigan’s financial aid programs provide opportunities for students from diverse and everexpanding backgrounds, focusing on those who have not traditionally had access to high-quality independent school education. The generosity of donors ensures Shawnigan can continue to give promising students, either in Canada or abroad, access to our unique Shawnigan Journey.

The scholarship program pairs our community’s generous support with the untapped potential of deserving youth, and establishes Shawnigan as a leading educational institution for outstanding students from across the globe. In 2023-24, we were able to provide financial aid for students from locations around the world, from the Cowichan Valley to Indigenous communities across Canada, and from Afghanistan to Ukraine to Nepal. The presence of these students in turn enriches the lives, experiences, and educations of the rest of the Shawnigan community.

A cornerstone of our schoIarship program is the Impact Scholarship Fund, which includes a revitalized partnership with the Seattle-based Rainier Foundation that offers a pathway to college graduation and career success for underrepresented and marginalized students. Other new additions over the past year include the Jules Scholarship and the Class of ’73 Zenith Scholarship, both designed to assist Canadian students with financial need.

"Shawnigan is focusing its efforts on offering a world class education to people of all backgrounds regardless of financial barriers. The focus on inclusion with the new scholarship programs they have set up such as the Indigenous Scholarship of Canada and other Impact Scholarships is something we are really happy to support. The benefit to everyone is immeasurable." – Patrick Boot & Catherine Weenk, scholarship donors

SPARKS MINDS

Giving students lived learning experiences

From C.A.S.E. (Communications, Arts, Sciences and Entrepreneurship), an initiative of the Bradley Family Foundation, to the Heimbecker Inspiration Chair for Experiential Education, donations from the Shawnigan community help the School give students hands-on opportunities for growth and development.

C.A.S.E. brings students in contact with technology and applied arts to help prepare them for the world beyond Shawnigan. In the past year, we have been able to update the technology in the Chapel and create a broadcasting room in the Charlie Purdey Arena, allowing students to master industry-standard technology while sharing events at the School with the rest of the world. All this is thanks to the power of philanthropy.

What makes the Heimbecker Chair unique is that the School and the Heimbecker family found experiential education so valuable to the Shawnigan Journey that they created a position with dedicated space and time to curate Shawnigan's experiential programming, linking the academic goals of teachers with natural spaces.

Current Heimbecker Chair Dr. Alexei du Bois (Hilton College, South Africa) defines experiential learning as “a commitment to students having transformational experiences outside the classroom.” That could mean taking advantage of the natural space on the campus, or away from campus, as exemplified by the Beyond the Gates program for Grade 9 students, to build bridges between classroom learning and the natural world.

"It is truly gratifying to see how well Shawnigan Lake School is flourishing, and I look forward to seeing even greater achievements in the future… We firmly believe in the importance of C.A.S.E. and are eager to support its continuation… We are confident that the funds will be put to good use … bringing further benefits to the school and its students." – Shawnigan parent & donor

THE SHAWNIGAN COMMUNITY

Engaging alumni, parents and friends

With 35 community events on campus and in cities all over the world, a presence at the 2024 Canada Sevens in Vancouver, and direct connections with more than 400 members of our community, we continued to maintain strong ties with alumni, parents, and friends throughout the 2023-24 school year.

The Shawnigan Alumni Instagram account (@shawniganalumni) has over 500 followers, helping us build connections with the goal of increasing outreach to our community, sharing good news stories about our alumni, and promoting our upcoming events. We have an additional 2,100 followers on Facebook, 764 members on LinkedIn, and 1,856 users on Shawnigan Connect, and we strive to continue growing these numbers.

Community brunches were held in Marion Hall on one Sunday every term, and parents and families are encouraged to join us for these fabulous feasts. The brunches, prepared by our talented dining team, have grown in popularity. In April, more than 240 guests joined us, with many grandparents visiting the School for the first time.

We have visits planned to several more cities around the world throughout the 2024-25 school year. Please go to www.shawnigan.ca/alumni/alumni-events for the latest events listing.

"Community is a huge contributor to joy. The value of friendship and community was taught to me by Shawnigan. These gifts spark my desire to give back to my school. While it is difficult to reciprocate all that I have been given by Shawnigan, I will continue to give back in ways that I hope will ensure similar opportunities are available for young people for years to come." – Lisa Grover ’90, School Governor & current parent
