Education changes lives.
Shawnigan, in particular, is sparking minds, kindling hearts, and forging futures in remarkable and impactful ways, and we aim to make that life-changing experience accessible to those who will carry its benefits forward to have maximum positive impact in their communities – from our own BC backyards to the 35 nationalities that were enrolled last year. In this way, we hope to benefit our world, one student at a time.
Through Impact Scholarships, Shawnigan is expanding support for those who have traditionally faced barriers to quality education as a result of discrimination, conflict and circumstances beyond their control. We are offering placements to students from under-served communities in Canada as well as Afghanistan, Ukraine and Nepal. At the same time, we are preserving tradition through Legacy Student Entrance Awards that encourage alumni families to send us their next generation.
Shawnigan’s founder, C.W. Lonsdale, was committed to lifting barriers and enabling students to attend Shawnigan regardless of financial circumstance, and we are continuing that legacy through one of the most generous financial aid programs in the country.
As we move forward with our Project Future strategic plan, we are pursuing ambitious goals because of the potential a Shawnigan education has to change lives. Thanks to your generous contributions to scholarships and financial aid, as well as to capital projects like Samuel House and the many programs benefitting from the Annual Fund, the School community is thriving in so many ways and we are ever grateful for your support.
On behalf of the Board of Governors, I thank you for helping to make the Shawnigan Journey such an exceptional experience for our students.
Fiona Macfarlane Board of Governors, Chair

I find my heart full of gratitude as I look back on the 2021-22 academic year.
As part of last year’s Annual Fund campaign, we invited members of our School community, past and present, to write a tribute to a Shawnigan staff member who has made a difference in their lives – and I was struck by the extent of the gratitude expressed by our community. The responses stood as testament to the calibre of the people who work here and inspire our students every day.
With our Project Future strategic plan as our North Star, Shawnigan is moving ahead in many inspiring ways. From breaking ground for Samuel House, the pioneering co-educational boarding house (with one wing for girls and one wing for boys) that will enhance our outstanding Grade 8 experience, to introducing Impact Scholarships in support of students at home and abroad who have faced circumstances that impede their access to quality education and/or safety, the future has never looked brighter at Shawnigan.
Thank you for joining us in helping to develop our School and to inspire the best in each to create the best for all.
In gratitude and with very best wishes,
GRATITUDE WORDS OF HEAD OF SCHOOL
Richard “Larry” Lamont Head of Shawnigan Lake School

The 2021–22 school year was one of kindness and generosity in the Shawnigan community. The Annual Fund saw another year of growth (12%), with excellent participation across all constituencies. Funds generated through donations are helping every aspect of the School, from boarding houses and sports teams to academic and 360 (arts & activities) programs.
Giving to the School has an impact in three key areas: operations, capital projects, and endowment. Operations contributions bring special elements to the Shawnigan Journey, such as Spirit Meals to lift student resolve during the lowest days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Capital projects in progress or forthcoming include Samuel House, the Sport Village, and the design of a possible Innovation and Creativity Centre.
Endowed and Board-designated funds allow us to create an experience for students like no other. Last year, the School added the Bruce-Lockhart Fellowship for Academic Excellence and the Heimbecker Chair for Experiential Education, which allow us to further enhance our programs. Endowments also help the School provide scholarships and financial aid, such as the Graham L. Anderson Legacy Scholarship and Impact Scholarships that benefit students from Canada and around the world who have faced barriers to quality education. Another recent addition is the Indigenous Student of Canada Scholarship, created for students who are grounded in the culture and traditions of their ancestors and embrace the opportunity to act as role models.

Shawnigan Lake School’s tradition of giving back dovetailed with a tremendously successful Annual Fund campaign in the fall of 2021.
Through the “Cultivating Kindness” campaign, the School community was invited to reflect on teachers and staff members who made a difference during their time at Shawnigan and to write a letter or tribute to that person, explaining their positive impact. The Shawnigan community responded to the call with hundreds of heartfelt tributes to dozens of current and former teachers and staff members.
With the School community still dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the campaign stimulated a heartwarming level of engagement that reflected the passion that students and graduates have for Shawnigan. It was made clear that teachers, advisors, coaches and staff have profoundly affected the course of students’ lives. Participants in the campaign were also invited to make donations and help continue the legacy established by those staff members, and the response was overwhelming.
Graham Anderson, whose dedication to the School spanned seven decades and a variety of roles –student, teacher, housemaster, registrar – was among the staff members who received a multitude of tributes through the campaign. Graham, who died in 2012, is also the namesake of the Graham L. Anderson Legacy Scholarship, which was established for current students in January 2022 by father and son John McIntyre ’60 (Lake’s) and Chris McIntyre ’98 (Lake’s), both of whom were deeply inspired by Graham during their respective times at Shawnigan.

INNOVATION & CREATIVITY CENTRE
Shawnigan has a strategic opportunity to be the first in Canada to establish a singular entity designed as a centre for excellence in innovation and digital literacy. A concept that has evolved directly out of Project Future, the Innovation and Creativity Centre vision builds on the remarkable success of C.A.S.E. (Communications, Arts, Sciences & Entrepreneurship) programs over the last 10 years.
With the world and the way in which students are educated both evolving rapidly, the Innovation and Creativity Centre aims to instill the School’s value of curiosity and help to future-proof our students, setting Shawnigan apart from other schools in Canada as the predominant educational leader in digital learning.
Currently in the concept development stage, the Innovation and Creativity Centre would be an industry-leading space for the School’s technology and applied arts programs, both current and future, providing a home for disciplines such as robotics, coding, graphic design, film production, broadcasting, 3D printing, metal fabrication, and textile design and printing – with flexible design labs to house others that have not yet been dreamed of.
In developing the Innovation and Creativity Centre concept, Shawnigan staff members have done extensive research over the last four years into high schools and universities across North America, including tours of dedicated high-tech schools in Seattle and post-secondary institutions such as MIT. Shawnigan’s proximity to tech industry hubs of the Pacific Northwest and other industries that are constantly evolving, such as mining and forestry, will allow the School to establish partnerships that will expose our students to future thinking industries.
Shawnigan donors have been supporting C.A.S.E. for years, inspired by the program and a matching grant from the Bradley Family Foundation. A $1-million pledge from another generous donor has helped to bring the concept closer to reality, and we will soon be reaching out to our community with opportunities to participate in this exciting project.

IMPACT SCHOLARSHIPS
Established by Head of School Larry Lamont and his wife, Kathini Cameron, in support of Project Future, Impact Scholarships are offered for new and returning students who have faced circumstances that impede their access to the growth and development that education offers. An important addition to our broad-reaching financial aid program, which assists families in the “squeezed middle” based on a means assessment, the intent of Impact Scholarships is to help Shawnigan reach its full potential for positive impact in the world.
Impact Scholars, through their life experience and commitment to education, will benefit enormously from the well-rounded education that Shawnigan offers, and will bring positive impact to the educational journey of students, staff, and the wider community. Impact Scholarships provide full access to and support for the Shawnigan Journey, including tuition, housing, books, uniform, and other expenses.
Among this year’s beneficiaries of the Impact Scholarship program is Marina M., a young woman from Afghanistan who came to Shawnigan seeking educational opportunities that were not available in her home country.
When the Taliban took over the government of Afghanistan in August 2021 and banned education for girls above Grade 6, Marina reached out to Women Leaders of Tomorrow, a Vancouver-based non-profit that finds scholarships for young Afghan women to continue their education overseas, and they connected her with Shawnigan.
Marina’s dream is to complete her high school education and pursue university studies in politics. She is interested in improving the economic, security and education situation in Afghanistan, and improving life for all citizens, especially women and children. Marina began her Shawnigan Journey as a Grade 10 student in May 2022.
Another of Shawnigan’s Impact Scholars is Yangchen T., who received the Michael T. Waites Scholarship. She came to the School in September 2021 from one of the most undeveloped and remote areas of Nepal. Impact Scholars who started at the School in fall 2022 include two young women from Ukraine, and a First Nations student from Comox, BC, who dreams of playing hockey while gaining a university education.

SAMUEL HOUSE
Building on the success of Stanton and Levien Houses, the specially designed boarding houses at the centre of our Grade 8 program, Shawnigan is creating a new co-educational boarding house for our youngest students, with one wing for girls and one for boys. The House will continue to provide a nurturing landing pad for Grade 8 students while acting as a supportive springboard into the wider school community.
The School has chosen the name “Samuel House” in honour of Gaynor and Rhodri Samuel and their decades of exemplary service to our School. Admired by so many within and beyond the School, Gaynor and Rhod have provided leadership and mentorship throughout their time at Shawnigan. From Gaynor’s roles as Renfrew House Director, self-proclaimed “House Mother” of Ripley’s House, and her current role as Executive Director of Admissions, to Rhod’s roles as biology teacher, longtime Ripley’s House Director, 1st XV boys’ rugby coach, and his current roles as Senior Master and Director of Alumni Engagement, they have been an inspiration to us all.
Samuel House’s predecessors – Stanton for girls and Levien for boys –currently work in tandem to foster a supportive co-educational culture characterized by close friendships that shape student journeys at Shawnigan. Their success has made Samuel House Shawnigan’s top priority. Samuel House will continue Stanton and Levien Houses’ legacy of providing a supportive environment that meets the specific needs of Grade 8 students.
The objective behind the Grade 8 program is twofold: to allow students to have a positive start at the School, and to build and foster friendships that will stay with them as they split into the Grade 9-12 Houses after their first year.
Planned to open in fall 2023, Samuel House will be the first of its kind in Canada for this grade level. Donors who step forward to support this project at the leadership level will have opportunities for naming rights to rooms and facilities in Samuel House, and all donors will be recognized on an honour board in the foyer. For more information, please contact Greg Stevenson, Executive Director, Advancement & Community Engagement at gstevenson@shawnigan.ca or 250-743-6487.

HEIMBECKER CHAIR
As part of Project Future, Shawnigan introduced the Inspiration Chairs Program in 2021, joining the Bruce-Lockhart Fellowship for Academic Excellence in enabling the School to bring in experts from outside the School to enrich students’ educational experience.
The first of the Inspiration Chairs is the Heimbecker Chair for Experiential Education, which was announced in December 2021. As Head of School Larry Lamont explains, “Much like the Bruce-Lockhart Fellowship for Academic Excellence, the Heimbecker Chair enables us to bring outstanding local, national or international educators to Shawnigan to inspire our community, provide fresh perspectives on education, encourage innovative and interdisciplinary approaches, and uniquely contribute to our students’ experience of the Shawnigan Journey.”
Building on Project Future’s strategic pillars of Academic Excellence, Co-Curricular Distinction, and Student Life Unparalleled, the Heimbecker Chair supports the development of experiential education in its many forms to ensure that Shawnigan’s experiential programming continues to deliver extraordinary learning experiences for our students.
The Heimbecker Chair is a key part of the Beyond the Gates outdoor education program for Grade 9 students, all part of the effort to ensure that Shawnigan continues to deliver outstanding learning experiences for our students in the beautiful wilderness of Vancouver Island. Through this experience, Shawnigan students can discover their own untapped potential, develop resilience, and experience curriculum through hands-on study beyond the classroom.
The first Heimbecker Chair was Tom Hall, previously Head of the Timbertop Campus at Geelong Grammar School in Victoria, Australia, and a leader in experiential education and the benefits it brings to communities, individuals and the environment. Tom finished his term as Heimbecker Chair in October 2022 and returned to Australia, where he is now serving as Deputy Head at Geelong Grammar School.
