Reader,

Art is one of our oldest means of communication. In some cases it is the only thing left behind by past civilizations. It is therefore one of the most important avenues to explore where we have come from. However, it is also an avenue to explore one’s self, our individual perception of our environment and our deeper understanding of all thought that may be entertained in our psyche. Art allows for not only an exploration of the subconscious, but also an exploration of the external factors that work to shape our subconscious. What this body of work does is explore man, not so much as an emotional being but as a being that moves history and culture. A being that explores an environment, that builds and reacts to it. In my observations, this reaction can be expressed through politics, religion, and simple human habitation. My objective is not only to see this impact, but also to study the factors that bring it forth from the deeper confines of our minds. The first place to begin is one’s self. My most resent work is a conceptual series dedicated to observing the factors that have led me to my chosen career path and the person I am today. These paintings are inspired by the Surrealist movement, particularly the pictorial meaning and literature of Salvador Dali and André Breton. Both these men perceived their world as a whole though absurdity and the dream state. However, they both came to their own actualization in recognizing what external, religious, political, environmental, and cultural factors had created in the expressions of dreaming. Through the exploration and dream-state principles of Surrealism, I have endeavored to understand the subconscious, helping to find and display artists, environments, politics, religions and cultural references that have guided my thought, my approach to life, and my artistic expression. Through this work I want those who see it to understand how there is rationality behind the absurd. To recognize and self-evaluate what factors have led others to their place in existence. And more importantly, I want others to envision a world where the external factors and the absurdity of dreams can and do co-exist to form the person they perceive themselves to be.
