CAPABI LI TY S TATEM ENT General Research Expertise Public Health: Shaw possesses a robust Social Work program, and a strong tradition of original scientific research in public health disparities. This research expertise coupled with Shaw’s strategic location bridging downtown and Southeast Raleigh, make it a strategic partner for research, education, and outreach initiatives focused on improving the public health of local communities in North Carolina.

Early Childhood Education: The Shaw University Center for Early Childhood Education, Development and Research demonstrates 5-star center excellence implementing best practices in educating young children from birth to kindergarten and working with their families. Further, the Center provides quality professional development for caregivers, pre-/in-service teachers and other professionals.

Center for Alternative Programs in Education (CAPE): Shaw has long been a pioneer in the field of distance learning with the institution of its CAPE program for continuing adult education more than 30 years ago. Through eight satellite campuses across the state, Shaw provides four-year degrees to adult learners, particularly those seeking to retrain and gain new skills at a midpoint in their careers. Mass Communications: Mass Communications undergraduates gain real-world, hands-on experience. Radio production is supported by WSHA-FM, a professionally-run campus radio station, in which students produce “The Blaze,” a weekly radio program. Video production facilities include a TV studio and control room, portable video cameras, and digital editing software. An onlinestudent newspaper, “The Bear Facts,” gives students the opportunity to gain practical reporting and writing experience. Interdisciplinary Research: Researchers at Shaw are engaged in interdisciplinary inquiry based in ethics, humanities, and theology regarding the contemporary practice of science, communications media, public health and education.

Regional Workforce: Shaw boasts robust academic support initiatives that facilitate the attainment of four-year degrees and entry into the high-skilled workforce for underrepresented students. These support initiatives include First-Year Support Services, Writing/Tutoring Training, Counseling Services, Library Services, Experiential Learning & Professional Development, and an Honors College. Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center: Created in January 2016, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (IEC) provides existing and aspiring business owners in Southeast Raleigh with space to think, meet, and develop their ideas into growing companies. The IEC is a partnership between Shaw and Carolina Small Business Development Fund.
