Tour CAMPUS
LEONARD HALL + TYLER HALL
ESTEY HALL
Estey Hall, built in 1873, is the oldest surviving building remaining on Campus. It was the first building constructed for the higher education of African-American women in the United States.
MEMORIAL GARDEN
Leonard Hall, built in 1881, was originally named Leonard Medical Center. It was the first fouryear medical college in North Carolina. Leonard Medical Center was named after Judson Wade Leonard, the brother-in-law of founder, Henry Martin Tupper. Tyler Hall was erected in 1910 as the hospital building and was originally known as Library Hall. The name of the building was later changed to Tyler Hall and the library until 1968. Today, the building is home to the Business Office.
Located in the heart of campus, the memorial garden provides an inviting and engaging environment for our students, staff, faculty, visitors and the community. The Memorial Garden is the location of the tombs of founder, Henry Martin Tupper and his wife Sarah. It is also the location of the University bell tower, which was erected in honor of those who came and left the University, from its founding to its present.
THOMAS J. BOYD CHAPEL
The Thomas J. Boyd Chapel was first dedicated on June 15, 1948. In 1993, The Thomas J. Boyd Chapel was completely renovated with major financial assistance from Rev. Thomas J. Boyd for whom the chapel was subsequently named. The rededication of the chapel took place on November 21, 1993.Â

UNIVERSITY BOOKSTORE THE BEARS’ DEN
The Bears’ Den is the spot on campus for students to hang out, watch big screen televisions, shoot pool, play ping-pong, cards, and chess. It has been newly renovated since the 2011 Tornado that damaged 27 buildings on campus and caused over $3.7 million in damage. This is where our students go to unwind and relax after a long day of classes and schoolwork.
