PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2009-2011

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Although we have experienced challenges, as Shaw Bears we have triumphed over that adversity, and now we celebrate the victory. It is my pleasure to present the 2009-2011 Shaw University President’s Report. When I assumed the position of interim president in June 2009, the University was in dire straits, and some were prepared to write our obituary. Since then, we have stabilized our financial state by securing a $31.1 million-dollar federal loan, by restructuring and refinancing the University’s debt, by balancing the budget, and by increasing our financial responsibility composite score. During this period, we have also tightened our belt, lived within our means, and managed the University within the parameters of our resources. In addition, during the fall 2010 semester, the University enrolled 759 freshman students—the largest freshman class in the Institution’s history—and overall student enrollment increased from 2507 to 2711. On April 16, 2011, we faced yet another challenge when a tornado severely damaged our University. Not only did we recover from the storm, but, like the phoenix, we rose to the occasion, working tirelessly day and night to restore our historic campus. With the support of the community and the entire Shaw family, we persevered, making what seemed impossible possible. Despite adversity, we continue to flourish. Our students carry on and perpetuate the historic legacy of academic excellence and civic engagement. Many students have actively participated in national and international academic programs, humanitarian efforts, research conferences, and community events. Moreover, the faculty has continued to engage in cutting-edge research, community service, and stellar teaching practices. Enough cannot be said about the staff. Without them, there would be no Shaw. Together, we have moved the University forward. While there is still much work to do, I am proud of what has been accomplished during the past two years. We thank our generous supporters for helping us to do what we do best—enhance the quality of life for our students by providing a world-class education in an enriching and engaging environment.

Sincerely,

Dorothy Cowser Yancy, PhD President 5  www.shawu.edu

The City of Raleigh delivered a $5,000 check during the Shaw Athletic Appreciation Day to help with the recovery effort and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) installed a temporary mobile kitchen and several modular units to serve as temporary dining facilities while the main cafeteria in the Willie E. SHAW RISES AFTER TORNADO On Saturday, April 16, 2011, a tornado touched down on the campus of Shaw University, causing severe damage to the University’s student center and residence halls. Twenty-seven buildings on campus suffered roof damage, including historic Estey Hall, the first building to be constructed for the higher education of African American women in the United States. Classes were canceled for the remainder of the semester and students were sent home. Despite the destruction, students and university personnel were not injured in the storm, or in its aftermath. And just three short weeks later, more than 350

and into the wee hours to ensure all classrooms and residential facilities were open, leaving little evidence of the wreckage. Estey Hall’s copper roof was restored to its original splendor and the building’s exterior and interior were repainted. Both the Fleming-Kee and Dimple Newsome Residence Halls were fully repaired and the C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium and Tupper Hall received new roofs. On December 2, 2011, the first floor dining facilities of the Willie E. Gary Student Center reopened, allowing students, once again, to have a permanent cafeteria. By April 2012, all repairs in the student center were completed and an “Open House” celebration was held to commemorate the event.

The Community Responds Less than a week and a half after the tornado devastated Shaw’s campus, alumni, students, faculty, staff, neighbors, and corporate and foundation partners showed their support by helping to rebuild the University. During “Shaw Clean-Up Day,” hundreds of volunteers, including students from St. Augustine’s, Duke, Peace, Meredith, NCSU, NC Central and elsewhere, arrived on campus to help clean up the damage and debris from the storm. Local television stations told Shaw’s story to the public, while syndicated radio shows, like the Tom Joyner Morning Show, provided Shaw with a platform to discuss the challenges associated with the storm and the needs that must be fulfilled in order for the recovery progress to continue.
