MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
A
s my time at Shaw draws to a close, I am proud to present my final President’s Report. The challenges were many -- a tornado, financial uncertainty, slowing enrollment, -- but what we have been able to achieve has been nothing short of extraordinary.
When others thought our doors would close permanently, we rose to the occasion, by stabilizing our finances and doing more with less. Not only did we remain open, but we thrived, enrolling the largest first-year class in the history of the University during the fall of 2010. We faced adversity a second time in April 2011 when a tornado destroyed our campus and forced us to close before semester’s end. Despite our difficulties, we endured and our students, faculty and staff continued to achieve, succeed and flourish. We have witnessed two faculty members, Dr. Lonieta Cornwall, Associate Professor of Music and Dr. Bobbie Little, Associate Professor of Elementary Education and Field Placement Coordinator, both receive the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest honor a North Carolina governor can bestow upon a citizen of the state. In addition, Dr. Little was chosen as one of the Top 25 Professors of Education in North Carolina. Our students excelled as well. During her freshman year, Sherice Neil received a $30,000 scholarship from Taco Bell. Lolia Kienka followed her 2012 CIAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor with the 2013 CIAA Woman of the Year award. She is currently a student at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland pursuing a graduate degree in international business. We owe so much of our success to professors and students like Dr. Little and Lolia. The good work we have started will not end with my departure. I am confident that our campus community, alumni, donors and supporters will continue to move the University forward. For 148 years, Shaw has remained true to its mission and educated the world’s best and brightest students. With your dedication and unwavering support, our great University will not only continue its mission, but exceed expectations for the next 148 years and beyond. Sincerely,

ACADEMIC YEAR IN REVIEW AUGUST »» The Shaw and Duke Divinity Schools sign a sharing agreement that allows faculty, staff and students from each institution to borrow books and other items from the other institution’s divinity library. The first agreement of its kind between the two divinity schools, it also includes onsite access to selected Duke Divinity licensed databases.

»» Students from the University’s Athletic Training program participate in the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance. Along with other local organizations, Shaw students spent the day mulching and protecting trees that remained standing after the April 2011 tornado that damaged extensive portions of Downtown Raleigh, including the University. »» Freshman Margaret White was one of 36 students to receive the United Parcel Service (UPS) Foundation Scholarship through the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU). UPS Division Manager and Independent College Fund of NC Board member, Nicole Brandon, presented a check for $86,400 for student scholarships at the 36 independent colleges and universities in North Carolina. The “105 Voices of History” is a national collegiate choir representing every HBCU in the nation. »» The University names Debra K. Latimore as Vice President for Fiscal Affairs and Evelyn Leathers as Vice President for Institutional Advancement. Latimore is a Certified Public Accountant and previously served as the University’s Interim Vice President for Fiscal Affairs. Leathers previously served as Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Wiley College in Marshall, TX. »» Alumnus Art Anthony ‘74 is elected first vice president of the State Employees Association of North Carolina (SEANC), Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 2008. SEANC, headquartered in Raleigh, is an advocacy organization for active and retired state employees.
NOVEMBER »» The Shaw University Athletic Booster Club makes a $10,000 donation to the Athletic Department in a check presentation held before the October 27th football game against Winston-Salem State. The gift is the largest the group has made to the Athletic Department. The funds will be used to cover scholarships and operating expenses.

FEBRUARY »» Shaw athlete Chuck Hinton, the last player for the Washington Senators to hit .300, and who later became the head baseball coach at Howard University and the founder of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, died at his home in Washington, D.C. at the age of 78. Born in Rocky Mount, Hinton played football, basketball and baseball at Shaw and served two years in the Army in the 1950s. »» Social Work students from the University’s Greenville CAPE Center, collect school items for pre-kindergarten (pre-k) students for their “Hearts for Head Start” service project. The pre-k students received the items in gift bags for Valentine’s Day and the project was featured on Greenville television station WITN.

Height. »» Former Athletic Director Alfonza Carter is named to the 2013 Class of the John B. McLendon, Jr. CIAA Hall of Fame. Carter served in a variety of roles at Shaw for more than three decades, including Head Men’s and Women’s Basketball Coach, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, Director of Admissions and Interim Dean of Enrollment Management. Currently, he is the University’s Dean of Students. »» Shaw hosts the Second Annual Student Research Symposium. The induction ceremony was held on October 7, 2013 in the Raleigh Convention Center. »» The University receives a $100,000 grant from the Cannon Foundation. The funds will be used to make repairs and renovations to the Fleming Kee and Dimple Newsome residence halls. »» Shaw is selected as a Flagship Campus for the project “A Network for Understanding the New Europe” at New York University (NYU). The University and 19 other Flagship Campuses will sponsor faculty members to serve as Institutional Ambassadors for faculty development seminars.

»» Alumnus Dr. Cleveland L. Sellers, Jr. ’75, President of Voorhees College and noted civil rights activist, delivers the University’s commencement address. Sellers is most recognized for his involvement in the “Orangeburg Massacre” where a violent struggle between police and protesters left three men dead and 27 wounded, including Sellers. The police officers involved were acquitted and Sellers was convicted and imprisoned on rioting charges. »» Dr. Bobbie Little, Assistant Professor of Elementary Education and Field Placement Coordinator, was chosen as one of the Top 25 Professors of Education in North Carolina. The SAM is a joint effort by the University and SBA to promote small business through education and community outreach. »» The General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina presents President Yancy with a $75,000 donation during the University’s annual Baccalaureate Service. Each student received a $500 scholarship. »» Princeanna Brooks and Christina Jackson participated in the N.C. Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) “2013 Historically Black Colleges and Universities - Minority Institutions of Higher Education” summer internship program. During the 10-week program, they were placed in intensive assignments with NCDOT and other transportation-related partners throughout North Carolina.

»» Lolia Kienka was named the 2013 CIAA Woman of the Year. The award recognizes a student-athlete who has distinguished herself throughout her collegiate career in academic achievement, athletic excellence, community service and leadership. She graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, a Bachelor of Arts Kienka in International Relations, a minor in Accounting and a 3.91 grade point average. The Year of the Lady Bears The 2012-2013 athletic year saw improvement in almost every sport, with two women’s teams - basketball and tennis - earning CIAA championships. One other - men’s tennis - earned an NCAA berth.
FALL The football team, on the arm of James Stallons, rewrote the Shaw passing record book, claiming all but one single game and season record. The volleyball team improved greatly over their 2011-2012 campaign, winning ten games, and coming within one point - the third tiebreaker - of making the CIAA tournament. The young team lost only one senior and looks to be in position to make a strong run at the tournament this season. The men’s cross country team had their highest finish ever in the NCAA Regional Championship. The women’s team, featuring mainly freshman runners, is looking to make strides in the 2013 season.
The women’s basketball team continued their winning ways, coming off their national championship season with another strong performance, despite the loss of eight players from the championship team. With a strong non-conference schedule behind them, the Lady Bears dropped their first CIAA game of the season to Elizabeth City State, but then won nine straight to firmly announce their intention to take yet another CIAA Championship. Shaw finished the conference schedule 13-3, earning the top seed in the CIAA Tournament. The Lady Bears then swept through the tournament, claiming their third straight title, before advancing to the NCAA tournament. The Lady Bears were recognized by the Raleigh City Council for their accomplishments, which included a 25-5 record.
WINTER As the calendar turned to the winter months, Shaw’s bowlers and basketball players took to the lanes and courts. The bowling team qualified for the CIAA tournament while the men’s basketball team closed the regular season with a threegame winning streak. The men finished the season 16-11, 10-6 in the CIAA.

SPRING As the weather warmed, Shaw’s spring teams took to the field - with almost all of them improving on the previous year’s performances. The softball team, led by Head Coach Kimberly Miller, initiated a new event this past season, hosting the first Shaw University Softball Challenge. The challenge drew 25 teams and raised funds for the athletic department. A number of teams also took part in a community service activity, Women’s Tennis teaching young softball players some basic skills and exercises. Next year’s challenge promises to be even bigger and better. The men’s tennis team fell just short of their ninth straight CIAA title, but still earned a berth in the NCAA tournament. The Bears had an outstanding season - once again going through regular season conference play undefeated. Three tennis Bears - Juan Sanchez, Charles Silva and Andre Monti - were named to the prestigious CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Second Team. The Commissioner’s team recognizes 20 student-athletes from all sports and all schools who have excelled on the field of competition and who have at least a 3.2 GPA. These athletes are the best of the best that the CIAA has to offer. The women’s tennis team not only swept through the CIAA regular season undefeated, but claimed their third CIAA Tournament Championship in four years and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. They finished their season with a strong performance against regional power Indiana (PA), dropping a 5-3 nail biter that came down to the final two games.
Year for her successes on the court, in the classroom and in the community. It is the only career honor presented by the conference each year. Kienka graduated in May with a double major in business and international relations with a 3.91 GPA. Both the men’s and women’s track and field teams were extremely Kienka young, but by the CIAA Championships, Shaw had developed some strong performers. Darian Brown was named All-CIAA in the men’s 110-meter high hurdles, Morgan Moore for the women’s discus throw, and Marquise Brown for the men’s long jump. The Bears also had some strong performances in the relay races. Most importantly, 35 student athletes crossed the stage and got their diplomas in May - and eight of the studentathletes graduated with honors.

r. Dorothy Cowser Yancy, a native of Alabama, is the 14th and 16th President of Shaw University. Under her unprecedented leadership, the University achieved financial stability, rebuilt after a tornado and began five program accreditation reviews and the regular Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) reaffirmation. Her tenure at Shaw has been marked by an increase in alumni giving, endowment creation and academic enhancement. She leaves the University on solid financial standing - a hallmark of a Yancy Presidency – and with a positive outlook for the future. Her wisdom and guidance will be missed. »» JUNE 2009 - Dr. Yancy assumes the presidency of Shaw University. The former president of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC, she is the first female president in the University’s history.
the overall quality of the educational experience for students in the life sciences and related areas. »» FEBRUARY 2010 – Dr. Yancy secures a $31.1 million-dollar federal loan that allows the University to restructure and refinance debt, achieve a balanced budget and raise its Composite Financial Index (CFI) score to a positive number. »» APRIL 2010 – the University celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which was founded at a conference led by Ella Baker on the Shaw campus in 1960. More than 1,100 people attended the event.
»» SEPTEMBER 2009 – The University receives a $4.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD). The grant is used to implement The Shaw NCMHD Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions (RIMI) Project. The project encourages the facilitation and integration of teaching and research at predominantly minority-serving academic institutions, with the aim of developing sustainable research programs, and enhancing 16 | PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2012-2013
»» MAY 2010 – Dr. Yancy invites Bill Cosby to speak at the University’s commencement. He reminds the graduates to never forget “the value of their education.”
»» SEPTEMBER 2011 – Dr. Yancy returns to Shaw following a devastating tornado in April 2011 that destroyed 27 campus buildings and cancelled classes for the remainder of the spring semester. By December, the first-floor of the student center’s dining hall was re-opened and nearly all University buildings were repaired. »» NOVEMBER 2011 – The family of the late Vernon Malone, ’57, present Dr. Yancy with an $89,680 check to establish the Vernon and Susan Malone ’56 endowed scholarship. It is one of the largest donations the University has ever received to create an endowment. »» APRIL 2012 – The University marks the one year anniversary of the tornado that hit campus with a grand re-opening of the Willie E. Gary Student Center. During the event, Dr. Yancy thanks the countless students, faculty, staff, alumni and community volunteers that assisted with clean-up efforts. »» JANUARY 2013 – Dr. Yancy receives the Dr. Dorothy I. Height Leadership Award at the 22nd International Salute to the Life and Legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast Celebration in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes leaders around the world who embody the spirit and teachings of Dr. King and the legacy of civil rights activist Dorothy I. Height. Previous recipients of the Height Award include Sharon Pratt, former mayor of Washington, D.C.; Dr. Thelma T. Dailey, former President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Vice Chair of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. and Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee among others. »» APRIL 2013 – The University is named a flagship Campus for the project “A Network for Understanding the New Europe” at New York University (NYU). The University and 19 other Flagship Campuses will sponsor faculty members to serve as Institutional Ambassadors for faculty development seminars. The goal of the initiative is “to raise awareness about European Union (EU) policies and institutions, the EU’s role as an international actor in the economic and political field, and the value of the EU-US relationship.” »» MAY 2013 – The University and the U.S. Small Business Administration sign a “first of its kind” agreement to promote small business creation. The agreement will allow Shaw students, local small businesses and entrepreneurs to learn more about federal programs that help small businesses.

Shaw has invested in me and now it is time that I return the favor. There is no dollar amount to show the value of what I gained from Shaw. Making this personal commitment is just a small token of my appreciation and recognition for what Shaw has done for me.”
Young Alumni Succeed and Give Back
W
hen Warrick Scott ’00, Mitchell (Mitch) Summerfield ‘03, Byron Williams ’01, Reba Williams ’02 and Chris Young ‘99 were students at Shaw, they couldn’t have imagined that in just a few short years their idea for a nonprofit would grow into a successful organization, serving over 500 clients. “The experiences we gained at Shaw definitely contributed to the successes that we have all experienced,” said Reba. “The Bible says everyone to whom much is given, of him will be required. Shaw gave, we received, and now it is our time to give back. We are sowing seeds into our future and the ability to do so is a blessing.” Reaching Your Goals (RYG) was founded in 2002 after Reba encouraged her now husband Byron to start a nonprofit because he was “always helping people.” The organization is dedicated to ensuring that every child reaches his or her goals by providing appropriate mental, behavioral and nutritional services to children in need. To start RYG, Byron turned to his best friends, Warrick, Mitchell and Chris for assistance and the group opened their first group home that year. Renting a home from a former Shaw employee, Byron and Warrick 18 | PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2012-2013
handled the day-to-day operations of the group home while Mitch and Chris provided financial support. “We are all givers by nature,” said Byron. “We would rather give to others than give to ourselves.” After receiving their first foster child and helping him to do well in school, by providing food, clothing, shelter and emotional support, they began to get referrals, and one child turned into four, then 10 and more. Soon, Byron and Warrick turned to the community for assistance with their growing organization. “We did what we call ‘connecting the dots in the community’ where you find people with like spirit and like minds and you don’t take no for answer,” said Warrick. “We just pulled resources together.” Reba began researching how the organization could add more services and in just a short period of time, they were serving hundreds of clients and had over 300 employees. Fast forward to 2013. Reaching Your Goals now includes a scholarship program, a food bank that serves over 200 people a week and an AAU basketball program. The group decided that the time was right to give back to their alma mater in the form of an endowed scholarship. “My experience at Shaw was just as much fun as it was tough, but it

For Byron, contributing to Shaw and starting RYG has been personal. Once a foster child himself, he hopes the endowment will “fill in the gap” and help students stay in school. “If a student can come to school and focus on their studies and not have to worry about how it will be paid or even how they will eat, then we have done a good deed.” The group sees RYG expanding statewide and hosting STEM education summits. Additionally, the organization’s strategic plan includes expanding the delivery of the RYG’s behavioral health component to encompass a full array of private payers; competing on a national platform for the AAU program; and building a stronger scholarship component with the support of private and public investors. Each founder attributes their success to their families, including Mitch’s wife Shantel A. Summerfield and Warrick’s wife, Chinique, and two children, Talasjah and Warrick Jr. “As we move forward we hope to be able to continue to inspire the University so that our boys will one day have the opportunity to have the Shaw experience like we have,” said Reba. With their efforts, hundreds of students will now have that opportunity as well.
National Alumni Association Surpasses Giving Goal
When James Shaw ‘88, President of the National Alumni Association (NAA) of Shaw University, took office in 2012, he and his executive team focused on one goal – raising the alumni giving rate. For years, the University’s alumni giving participation rate mired in the single digits. Shaw decided that something had to change. “When I met with President Yancy, I asked her for some goals we [NAA] should shoot for and she mentioned increasing alumni giving,” said Shaw. “I was thinking of doubling the alumni giving percentage from 8% to 16%, but President Yancy challenged us to do more. So we set the goal at 26%. Not only did we meet the goal, we surpassed it.” Shaw credits the NAA’s success to old-fashion campaigning and teamwork. Shaw and his executive team went to any and every event where alumni would be present – football games, the CIAA tournament, chapter meetings – and then made phone calls and knocked on doors asking alumni to donate, in any amount. “We were present everywhere we could be, asking
alumni to give whatever they could, even if it was just five or ten dollars,” said Shaw. “The goal was to just increase the amount of people who were giving, regardless of the amount.” When traditional methods produced just ordinary results, Shaw and his team turned to active alumni for help and asked them to make donations for their classmates. “We got people to give in their classmate’s name, roommate’s name, in their sorority sister or fraternity brother’s name,” said Shaw. “Those donors also received a letter noting that a donation had been made in their name. We got a lot of people to do that. It was very successful in helping us to reach our goal.” After months of hard work, the NAA’s efforts paid off. By the end of the school year, the alumni giving participation rate stood at 32%, surpassing their goal by 6% and quadrupling the 2012 percentage. Shaw noted that an army of alumni and volunteers were instrumental in the Association exceeding the goal, but in particular he singled out NAA Recording Secretary Helen Best ’76 for her assistance. “She really took the lead on this,” Shaw mentioned. “This was her baby. She reached out to alumni on a daily basis. She really was a big part of our success.” Shaw also credits University staff members Evelyn Leathers, Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Seddrick Hill, Director of Alumni Relations and Planned Giving for supporting and helping to achieve the goal. With the alumni giving goal achieved, Shaw and his team are turning their attention to three additional goals they hope to accomplish: establishing a new endowment by 2015; expanding the University’s Memorial Garden and yes, increasing the alumni giving percentage to 45%. “We can definitely do it,” Shaw said confidently. “We have the people and the determination to do this again.” The Chapter set a goal of $35,000 to fund the endowment and decided to use the profits from their annual banquet to get started. For the last 12 years, the Chapter hosted the banquet to provide scholarships to local Fayetteville high school students and to students attending the University’s CAPE Center in Fayetteville. Beginning in 2007, the banquet proceeds were earmarked specifically for the endowment.
Fayetteville/Cumberland County Alumni Chapter Funds Its Legacy For the last 17 years, Dr. Wilson A. Lacy ’70, also a Shaw Trustee has worked diligently to raise money for his alma mater as the President of the University’s Fayetteville/Cumberland County Alumni Chapter. The Chapter not only contributed to the University, but it also contributed to local nonprofits such as the Salvation Army, Special Olympics and American Heart Association. However, in 2007, Lacy realized that although the Chapter made donations to the University every year, it needed to contribute a more lasting gift. “As members of the chapter began to get older, I thought it would be fitting that we would have a legacy to leave, since the chapter has been here for a while,” said Lacy. “So I introduced the idea of starting an endowment at Shaw.”
All 55 chapter members sold tickets and ads for the banquet to help raise funds. In 2008, the banquet raised $5,600. Two years later, the banquet raised $11,470. By 2012, the Chapter had surpassed their goal and raised a total of $52,000 for the endowment. “The banquets have been a tremendous fundraiser for us,” said Lacy. “The dedication of our members has been unprecedented and led us to successfully exceed our goal well beyond what we had anticipated.” Lacy says the Chapter’s new fundraising goal is $75,000, and he believes that all alumni chapters, no matter the size, should give back. “The endowment helps the university to the greatest degree and helps individuals stay more committed when they have a goal to shoot for,” he said. “We would like to challenge the other alumni chapters to have a goal to do something. It’s not the amount of chapter members that matters, but the commitment to do something.” WWW.SHAWU.EDU | 19

The Rogers-Bagley-Daniels-Pegues House, built in 1855, is one of two buildings at Shaw University listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The house was associated with several leading figures in local, state, and national history. Dr. Albert Pegues, who purchased the house from the Bagley family, was a noted black educator, serving as dean of the Theological Department at Shaw University for ten years.
