“Pro Christo et Humanitate”
Commencement Ceremony Decorum and Courtesy
W
elcome to the 2015 Commencement of The Shaw University. The pageantry of today’s ceremony is the pinnacle and recognition of years of study, preparation and achievement of our graduates. We hope you will find these ceremonies both meaningful and impressive. They reflect the efforts of all members of the Shaw University family - faculty, staff, students, families and friends. The University solicits your cooperation in helping to sustain the dignity and solemnity of this happy occasion. We respectfully request that you refrain from engaging in conversation as well as moving about while the Commencement Exercise is in progress. Once the exercises have begun, only members of the authorized working press, authorized photographers, and staff are permitted on the floor. Individuals wishing to take photographs may do so following the exercises. We ask that all guests turn off their cellular telephones. Commencement begins with the academic procession of students, faculty, members of the Board of Trustees, the President’s Cabinet and platform guests. The final person to enter the Center is the President of the University who is escorted by an honor guard. The audience is asked to rise as the procession enters the Center and remain standing until the platform party has taken its place, the Invocation has been given and the Hymns have been sung. The President will close the ceremonies with a farewell statement. The audience is asked to rise and remain standing for the singing of the Alma Mater and the benediction. The audience is asked to take their seats and remain seated for the retrieval of the colors and the recessional of the platform party. The ceremonies are then concluded. Thank You.

Symbols of Authority‌ Office of the President THE CEREMONIAL ACADEMIC MACE
T
he ceremonial Academic Mace appeared in European universities during the fourteenth century, and represented the amalgamation of two much older staff-like devices of similar length and shape. These were the regal scepter and the medieval battle mace. Kings throughout history have carried scepters in insignia of the lawful authority of just rulers. Medieval princes first used the battle mace as an effective hand weapon in combat. In the fourteenth century, the royal scepter and the battle mace were combined to produce the ceremonial academic mace. It was carried before royalty, mayors of cities and chief officers of the medieval universities. Today, the mace is used on ceremonial occasions in the life of the university. In commencement exercises, the mace specifically indicates the authority of the university president to award degrees. The Chief Marshal who immediately precedes the presidential party in the ceremonial procession most often carries it. The Shaw University Mace consists of a twenty-four inch base of hard cherry and applied dark finish. The large flat ends of the upper mace have been fitted with banks of fine sterling silver. Over this is an open work design with several solid areas, which are decorated with garnets, long regarded as the stone of compassion and peace of mind. This stone also reflects one of the University’s colors and the other color is white. The mace design is inspired, in part, by the burning torch depicted in the University’s crest. Dr. Gaddis J. Faulcon, Interim President, has been handed the University Mace, designed, and executed in 1988 by the noted Shaw University artist and former Associate Professor Minnie McMillan.

Academic Regalia
T
he caps and gowns worn by those in the procession are of ancient origin and have been the traditional costume of the scholar since the Medieval Period. Today’s modern academic costume in the United States is based upon an intercollegiate code established in 1895. The costume code regulated the cut, style and materials of gowns as well as the specification of different colors for different disciplines. These early agreements have been revised periodically to cover standardization of the cap, the gown, and the hood. The distinctions set up by the Intercollegiate Code are simple. Each degree has its own distinctive gown and hood. The gown, commonly black, differs in sleeves and trimming according to level of degree. The bachelor’s gown is relatively simple in design. It is full cut, falling in a straight line from an elaborate yoke with long pointed sleeves as its distinction. The master’s gown is similar to the bachelor’s except for its peculiar arrangement of the oblong sleeves, which terminate in square ends at the wearer’s knees. The wearer’s arms emerge through slits in the sleeves made at the elbows. The doctoral gown, full and flowing, is distinguished by velvet panels down the front and around the neck and by three bars of velvet on the voluminous bellshaped sleeves. The velvet is usually black, or it may be a color designating the field of study, for example, dark blue for philosophy. The academic cap was a later development. It was conferred as a symbol of the Master of Arts degree. Some of these master’s caps were stiff, some soft, some square, and some round with a tuft in the center. Today’s tassel is an elaboration of the tuft. Although round caps are still used at some universities, Oxford University’s mortar board style is more common. The most distinguishing feature of academic attire is the hood, which was originally a practical element of dress, but which evolved into a separate and purely ornamental article draped over the shoulder and down the back. The length of the hood and the width of its velvet designate the level of the degree. The color of the velvet edging on the hood specifies the wearer’s field of learning.
These colors include: Agriculture—Maize Arts, Letters, Humanities—White Commerce, Accountancy, Business—Drab Dentistry—Lilac Economics—Copper Education—Light Blue Engineering—Orange Fine Arts, including Architecture—Brown Forestry—Russet Human Ecology—Maroon Journalism—Crimson Law—Purple Library Science—Lemon Medicine—Green
Music—Pink Nursing—Apricot Oratory (Speech)—Silver Gray Pharmacy—Olive Green Philosophy—Dark Blue Physical Education—Sage Green Public Administration, including Foreign Service—Peacock Blue Public Health—Salmon Pink Science—Golden Yellow Social Work (Social Science)—Citron Theology—Scarlet Veterinary Science—Gray
Colors of the silk lining in the center of the hood are those of the college or university that conferred the degree. The tassel may be either black or the color of the field of learning. The tassel of the doctor’s cap may be gold. SHAW UNIVERSITY | 4
COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER G. K. Butterfield
C
ongressman G. K. Butterfield believes that if you work hard and play by the rules, you deserve a fair shot at achieving the American Dream. But for many Americans, this dream seems out of reach. That is why Congressman Butterfield is working to expand opportunity to all Americans and ensure the poor and middle class have a seat at the decision-making table. From the courts to Congress, G. K. Butterfield has always fought for equality of opportunity. Congressman Butterfield’s roots in Wilson, NC taught him the values of hard work and responsibility. His father, Dr. G.K. Butterfield, Sr., was a respected dentist and elected official. Dr. Butterfield graduated from Meharry Dental College and practiced dentistry for 50 years. His mother, Addie, was passionate about education. She taught elementary school for 48 years in some of the poorest communities in NC. Butterfield’s parents led by example and instilled in him the importance of serving your community and working to give people the opportunity to succeed. After graduating from Charles H. Darden High School in Wilson, Congressman Butterfield earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and Sociology from North Carolina Central University (NCCU). During his time at NCCU, Congressman Butterfield was active in organizing voter registration drives in Durham. After the enactment of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, Butterfield organized a student march from the State Capitol in Raleigh to the Wilson County Courthouse to dramatize the importance of voter registration. At the conclusion of the march, Congressman Butterfield registered to vote for the first time. During his junior year at NCCU, Congressman Butterfield was drafted into the United States Army. He returned to NCCU to complete his undergraduate degree. Following his graduation, he attended NCCU School of Law. While in law school, Congressman Butterfield focused on learning how the law could be used to protect people’s rights as opposed to limiting them. After completing law school, Congressman Butterfield began his distinguished legal career as a civil rights attorney. Congressman Butterfield was elected Resident Superior Court Judge for the First Judicial Division. For the next 12 years, he presided over civil and criminal courts in 46 counties throughout NC. In February 2001, then-Governor Mike Easley appointed Butterfield to the NC Supreme Court. While serving on the highest court in the state, Congressman Butterfield authored more than 15 opinions on cases involving judicial sentencing procedures, eminent domain, and the application of capital punishment. In January 2007, Congressman Butterfield was appointed a Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, a position in which he continues to serve. In November 2012, Congressman Butterfield was unanimously elected First Vice-Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) for the 113th Congress. His focus is on promoting anti-poverty programs, expanding economic development and job creation, protecting voting rights, advocating for the appointment of African Americans to judgeships and senior Administration positions, and increasing diversity in leadership positions in corporate America. Since coming to Congress, Congressman Butterfield has been a tireless advocate and champion for his constituents. He has consistently supported projects in his district that work to increase student achievement and expand opportunities for his constituents. He has fought for funding for transportation and redevelopment projects and has secured funding to support important health care programs in the First District. He is a lifelong member of Jackson Chapel First Missionary Baptist Church in Wilson, North Carolina. He is the father of three adult daughters, Valeisha, Lenai and Tunya, and a proud grandfather. 5 | COMMENCEMENT 2015

CITATION…Doctor of Humane Letters Barbara L. Goodmon Reader: Dr. Maria Spaulding
M
ister President: Mrs. Barbara L. Goodmon is an actively engaged philanthropist and advocate, supporting and promoting effective, and high-quality human services from communities in need. At age 22, her career began as the head nurse in the pediatric trauma and burns unit in Memphis, TN. In 1965, she obtained her nursing degree from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing and later graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts from Meredith College and a Master of Liberal Studies from North Carolina State University. Throughout her lifetime, she has been devoted to helping those in need. During her time in Memphis, she was nearby when Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, and the moment proved to be a turning point in her life. After relocating to North Carolina, she began dedicating herself to civic and social change that would continue through decades of community engagement, board service, and philanthropy. She is a passionate believer in community-building partnerships and supporting the less fortunate. Mrs. Goodmon has served on several community organization boards, including the Salvation Army of Wake County, The Healing Place of Wake County, Wake County Human Services, UNC’s School of Social Work Board of Visitors, UNC School of the Arts Board of Trustees, Raleigh Fine Arts Society, Meredith College Board of Trustees, NCSU College of Humanities and Social Sciences Advisory Board, and she helped to found NCSU’s Institute for Nonprofits. In 2001, as Vice Chairman of The Healing Place, Mrs. Goodmon started a substance abuse treatment center for homeless men and women in Raleigh. Since that time, this facility has provided more than one million beds and days of recovery to those in the community. In 2014, the Salvation Army of Wake County named its new women’s shelter in honor of Barbara Goodmon’s service. Mrs. Goodmon has served as president and executive director of the AJ Fletcher Foundation. She is currently president and board member of the Fletcher Academy. Among other honors, she has received the prestigious William Booth Award (1992), the Others Award (1999) from The Salvation Army and was also honored in 1998 as a YWCA Academy of Women Inductee. She is married to James Fletcher Goodmon and they have three children and eight grandchildren. Mister President, for the above reasons and many others, I am pleased to present to you Mrs. Barbara L. Goodmon, Philanthropist, to receive at your hand the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa. Done by order of this Administration on this ninth day of May in the year of our Lord two thousand and fifteen. Gaddis J. Faulcon | Interim President Joseph N. Bell, Jr. | Chairman of the Board

The Star Spangled Banner Frances Scott Key
O! say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars, Thru the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched,
Were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there O! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
“Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamund Johnson Lift every voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand, True to our God, True to our Native Land
