Dos’ and Watch-out-fors. I fell in lo love with Manipal the moment I stepped off the bus. Flanked by watering holes (of the distilled kind) at its extremities, the beautiful little university town of 600 acres is dissected by a serpentine Main Street filled with hotels, shopping, restaurants, bus stations and a Post office befo before it nosedives into Udupi. Small roads lead off towards independent educational campuses with stone buildings and moss covered perimeter walls. Very quaint and hill-station like. Set amongst breathtaking greenery, Manipal is a vibrant example of a “green” eco friendly campus. Little signboards that read “Do not drink. Not potable” indicate that recycled water irrigates the large acres of lawns and gardens that dot the campus.

Eat, drink, breathe: manipal W
hen I was fifteen, my brother left home to pursue his engineering at a college in Vellore. I couldn’t help getting swamped by the myriad emotions that ran amok in the football ground or the range of character sketches I could make eating dosas in the food court. The pure energy that pulsed through the halls of the campus fascinated measly-little-doe-eyed-me and ever since, all I ever wanted was to be a part of such a grand student culture. Grand student culture turned out to be the understatement of the year when Manipal happened. Something did click in my heart when I got the university application brochure that brought me all the way from Kerala, but no glossy page can do justice to what one innately feels in this beautiful cit city. The spirit that courses its way around Manipal is one truly inspired by life itself. This place never ceases to amaze me and here’s why I love it. The ethereal monsoon showers are the driving magic of this place, be it the sound of raindrops on tin roofs or the cascading brown waters that yield shrieks from girls in white pants
Then there is the multitude of activities that take place- the jam sessions in the MIT Food Court complete with head banging et al, flash mobs at IC during class breaks, student plays running full house at syndicate hall, the rows of info desks that shake sign up forms in your face during fests, Futsal matches, movie clubs, college fests Sherlock Holmes inspired detective events, remote control car obstacle races smack in the middle of KC, the list goes on. The essence of Manipal though lies in its student population. The sheer number of it. You can’t help but feel at peace walking back with the throng of students that make their way back to the hostels, ten minutes to perm time, sipping bubble tea from Teaze or with the crowds that cheer the home basketball team for that winning 3-pointer with 3 seconds on the clock. Or when celebrating Diwali while people set firecrackers after you or when the guys in the hostel TV room erupt in cheers as Dhoni hits a six.
