irst and foremost, thank you for your joining us this evening and continuing to support the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey. This year, we celebrate 30 prosperous years of a strong network of individuals, businesses, and associations that have redefined the Hispanic business community in New Jersey. Tonight, as we recognize SHCCNJ’s successes, I want to assure you that we continue to identify and communicate the needs of Hispanic businesses by increasing relations with the corporate sector, influence legislation, and policies. The Board and I want to remind you that we are here to provide you and your business assistance through our regional meetings, seminars, conferences, and annual state convention.
It is through our resources and your participation that we continue to make a big difference in the lives of promising entrepreneurs and have improved our communities at large. For those of you looking to reap the benefits of the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey has to offer, I encourage you to take part in The Entrepreneurship Training Program and more offered to help you advance. I want to thank the Chamber members, Board of Directors, volunteers, social media ambassadors, and most importantly, the entire Chamber team who work tirelessly to better our Chamber year after year. 30 Years of Connecting the Hispanic Familia
I
n 1989, business leaders encouraged to foster, mentor and train Hispanic-owned businesses in New Jersey founded the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey (SHCCNJ). Thirty years later, our growing network is composed of 3,800 professional members that allow SHCCNJ as a not-for-profit organization to serve as the voice of 119,000 Hispanic Owned businesses that contribute over $20 Billion to the State’s economy. In 2018, NJBIZ ranked our chamber #1 Top Chamber in New Jersey and named our chamber among the largest in the state. In the past three decades, SHCCNJ has strived to expand business opportunities, educate and train entrepreneurs as well as business owners. The Board of Directors proudly explains that “our focus has been in not only supporting our members’ growth, but also on leading by example by streamlining our processes, motivating corporations and government to invest in us, and managing our resources productively”. As a result, multinational corporations and government officials consider SHCCNJ to be a premier vehicle to access the Latino community and its striking purchasing power. Today, among our proudest achievements are the tremendous growth of membership and signature events, development of entrepreneurship programs such as HETP and LETS for small businesses as well as female entrepreneurs, and an increase in diversification on board of directors and staff members. SHCCNJ looks forward to continuing to host networking events such as The Annual Convention where over seventy exhibitors, government officials, corporate leaders, and diplomats all come together as one Familia. Our Monthly Brunch with the Chamber will continue to be a medium to network with our Board
and essential business members of our community. To help women business owners “to work on their business” and “not just in their business,’’ we will continue to empower the Latina Leadership Circle. In strides to leverage our relationships, grow our Chamber, and further serve our members, we look forward to sharing memorandums of understanding with organizations such as the U.S Small Business Administration, African American Chamber of Commerce of NJ, and Hispanic Bar Association. To help the next generation of business leaders to learn how to network and build their personal brand SHCCNJ also offers opportunities for students and members to volunteer at our events to gain experience in areas such as administration, marketing, event management, and social media. Together as one big Familia, SHCCNJ looks ahead to many more years of success filled with opportunities and development for the growing Hispanic community in the state of New Jersey. Cheers!

A Note from our President
T
he year 2019 has been a year of harvest and changes. We started the year appointing a new Chairman, Luis De La Hoz. Luis actively served on the Chamber’s board of directors for six (6) years, and when the moment to select a new Chairman came, he was the right candidate. In addition to a new Chairman, the board of directors was pleased to add new members. This year, we had more women participating, including the appointment of Claribel Cortes as Vice-Chair, Myriam Cruz as Secretary of the Board, Cristina Pinzon, Dana Rodriguez, and Ana Rodrigues as new board members. Guillermo Artiles also joined our board, being one of our youngest board members so far. When it came to providing additional networking opportunities to our members, we decided to start monthly brunches, a space for members to network with other businesses in addition to having direct access to board members and executive board. Our entrepreneurial programs grew tremendously! Wells Fargo granted funds to start a women entrepreneurship program called LETS-Latina Entrepreneurship Training Series, which offers business education, individual coaching, mentorship, a supportive community and an expanded network of contacts for Latina business owners - AT NO COST – and, to create real opportunities for visibility and networking with the Hispanic community and beyond. We received new grant funds for our Hispanic Entrepreneurship Training Program (HETP) from CHPRD, HCEDC, UPS, Columbia Bank, Verizon, Investors Bank, and Univision. Our vision and mission have never been stronger, but what’s next? Our commitment to the small business community is focused and real. Moving forward into the new year, 2020, our Chamber strives to continue to be a one-stop-shop for our members and non-members. The past thirty (30) years have taught us the “why” and “what” of our mission. As we move into a new decade, we are committed to building a stronger platform on the robust foundation we have created. Our desire to continue fostering female participation in our business ecosystem has led us to create the Latina Leadership Circle. The mission of this group is to promote problem-solving and creativity among a small group of business owners and industry leaders with the core purpose of Moving Forward Together. Its objective is to help women business owners “to work on their business” and “not just in their business.” Our strategic plan also includes developing a “CASA” for our 3,800 members, partners, and twenty-two (22) countries of Latin America. Our “CASA” would be a building that will become the place where our members can come to be assisted by coaches, mentors, and technical staff. We will have event space, classroom space, and meeting space. We would welcome an “Anchor” sponsor that can provide support to our vision and allow us to make “MI CASA ES SU CASA” a reality. We need YOU, and we count on YOU! Let’s keep working together to strengthen the Hispanic familia in the state of New Jersey. Together, we will continue making our dreams come true.

Lifetime Achievement Award skills and ability to resolve complex disputes, relying on his extensive experience as both a judge and a trial attorney. Judge Linares is highly experienced in the life sciences and financial services industries, having handled more than 50 patent cases in the past six years—many involving high-stakes disputes between generic and branded drug companies. In addition, he has presided over numerous major bankruptcy appeals, class actions, multidistrict litigations and securities fraud cases. An acknowledged thought leader, Judge Linares lectures nationally on litigation and patent cases. He is an adjunct professor at Seton Hall School of Law. He led the New Jersey District Court 2017 Sentencing Symposium and the 2018 New Jersey District Court National Opioid Symposium, and is a fellow of the American Bar Association. He has been honored with the New Jersey State Bar Distinguished Judicial Service Award and the James J. McLaughlin Professionalism Award presented by the New Jersey State Bar Association.
JOSE L. LINARES he Honorable Jose L. Linares chairs McCarter’s Alternative Dispute Resolution T practice. He served as Chief Judge of the
United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, having been nominated to the bench by President George W. Bush in 2002. Prior to joining the United States District Court, he served as a superior court judge in Essex County, New Jersey. Judge Linares’s experience, acquired over forty years in judicial service and private practice, offers clients a unique perspective on litigation and a deep understanding of dispute resolution. Over the course of his career, he has developed the exceptional

Breaking ground as the first Hispanic to serve as Chief of the United States District Court of New Jersey and the first Cubanborn District Court Chief in the United States, Judge Linares champions diversity and inclusion, and has helped change the face of the federal court. He has received the Hispanic Bar Association Trailblazer Award, the Trailblazer Award from the Rutgers School of Law–Newark Association of Latin American Law Students, the Essex County Bar Association Civil Trial Attorney Achievement Award, Seton Hall Law School Latino Students Role Model Award, and the National Hispanic Bar Association Lifetime Achievement Award. Judge Linares is actively involved in numerous civic and nonprofit activities. He volunteers in youth athletic programs and dedicates time to mentoring students who are interested in pursuing a career in law.

JUAN A. GUTIERREZ
J
uan was born in Camaguey, Cuba in 1948 and migrated to the United States as a child. Juan was 13 when he arrived in New York in 1962 as part of the “Operation Pedro Pan” to live with his grand-uncle in Whitestone, Queens. In New York, Juan finished grammar school at Saint Lukes and went onto attend St. Helena High School, run by the Marist Brothers in the Bronx. When his parents and young brother arrived from Cuba in 1966 in the Freedom Flights he was reunited with them, and the family moved

After three years of working for the City of Paterson and seven years with Cruz Construction Company, in 1978 Juan founded his own civil construction company, performing work in sewer and water pipelines throughout the State of New Jersey. Over the years, the company has expanded its capabilities and geographic reach and acquired additional construction companies. Today, Juan is the Chairman of JAG Companies, Inc., whose entities include Northeast Remsco Construction and Caldwell Marine International, both based in Farmingdale, New Jersey; Huxted Tunneling, based in Palmetto, Florida; and ECI Drilling International based in Conroe, Texas. The companies perform a variety of civil construction work including pipelines, tunnels, bridges, highways, treatment plants, rail stations and specializing in the installation of submarine cables. These companies presently work throughout North America and the Caribbean. Juan has served as past President and Executive Board Member of the Utility and Transportation Contractors Association of New Jersey; former Regional Vice President of the National Utility and Transportation Contractors Association; Executive Committee member of the General Contractors of New York; and as a member of The Moles. Juan is also Vice-Chairman of the Cuban American National Foundation.

LILIA RIOS O
riginally from Tamazula de Gordiano in the state of Jalisco, Lilia Rios is the co-founder of La Providencia, a company established in 2005 in Passaic, New Jersey. La Providencia has a national presence in supermarkets and restaurants in more than 22 states; its line includes ethnic kitchenware, arts and crafts, cleaning and party supplies. Rios graduated from The University of Guadalajara, with a bachelor’s degree in law.

Rios is a strong consulting professional with an EPI from Rutgers Business School and has 15-years of experience working in the wholesale industry. Rios is skilled in supplier performance, purchase orders, low-cost sourcing from other countries, and wholesale sourcing. Rios has participated as a speaker, a panelist and as a keynote speaker for Mexican business and community aairs.

atiria Soto is currently a co-anchor for Noticias Univision 41 at 6 and 11pm. She moved to New York in 2014 to co-anchor Al Despertar (Univision 41 News at Dawn). She has been nominated for a New York Emmy Award in 2016 and 2018. Soto, a native of Puerto Rico, began her career in television in 2001. Prior to joining WXTV, she was a co-host for WAPA TV/WAPA América’s program “Wapa a las Cuatro” (Wapa at Four) in Puerto Rico. At WAPA TV, she also served as host for “De

Película” (Movie Show) and “Transformación Total” (Total Transformation) programs. In addition, Soto worked as a freelance news reporter for Telemundo’s Puerto Rico newscast “Telenoticas.” Katiria obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Relations and Advertising, with a minor in journalism from the University of Puerto Rico. She also graduated Cum Laude with a Juris Doctor degree from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico’s School of Law.

Entrepreneurship with a purpose id you know that just in New Jersey alone, Hispanics open 100 new businesses per week, adding quickly D to the 120,000 Hispanic-owned businesses that
contribute $20 billion to the State’s economy. Even so, our community faces disproportionately higher barriers for growth compared to other population groups, due to limited access to funding and capital, few opportunities in corporate and government contracting, and the lack of a supportive network of experienced professionals that can provide accurate information to guide them in their decision making. Back in 2015, the SHCCNJ had a dream and a vision of supporting Hispanic small business owners in a very tangible way to overcome these many barriers, creating a real impact in our communities and improving the lives of many families. It was then that the Hispanic Entrepreneurship Training Program (HETP) was launched. With the support of a few sponsors that allowed the program to be offered at no cost to participants, 20 business owners received bilingual classroom instruction, individual expert coaching, and had access to the Chamber’s network and increased visibility, including exhibitors’ tables at key events. In 2019, just 5 years later, and after graduating almost 200 businesses that represent 13 different countries, we can proudly say that the HETP is one of the best programs supporting Hispanic business owners in the State of New Jersey and beyond. The overwhelming demand for the program, coupled with increased support from corporations and government organizations, allowed us to expand our classroom size to serve 50 businesses, a 250% increase in just 5 years. Additionally, the program experienced a 400% increase in applications and delivered an outstanding 92% graduation rate in 2018 and 2019. This is unheard of for a program that is at no cost to participants. We have accumulated hundreds of success stories amongst our participants, which include sales increase and new contracts, hiring of new employees, obtention of loans, the opening of brickand-mortar first and second locations, LLC registrations, MBWE certifications and the creation of business and marketing plans. Developed and run by successful business owners for entrepreneurs, the HETP’s special recipe to deliver such outstanding results include an extensive follow through with each participant. Our passionate and committed team takes the time to assess each participant’s needs and hurdles, assigning each of them a group of several coaches that work with them in the particular areas where they need support. In 2019, we also launched an online digital platform that allows us to not only track individual progress and success stories by participant, but that also keeps track of each coaching hour they were assigned, topics discussed and agreed-upon next steps. This detailed level of follow-

through ensures accountability from business owners and effectively assigns resources to maximize the overall impact of the program by focusing on the areas of major potential. Entering its 6th year in 2020, this state-of-the-art program will offer 14 classroom sessions running on Friday mornings between January and May 2020 at the Hudson County Community College in Jersey City. In addition to individual coaching, graduates will receive a one-year membership to the SHCCNJ, exhibitor tables at two major events, and opportunities for media exposure and visibility among the Chamber’s network. A trailblazing program for the modern Latina business owner, launching in 2020 Historically, HETP has attracted a majority of Latina business owners. This is not surprising, as Latinas create new businesses at 3 times the rate of any other population group. Whether they are raising a family as single mothers, complementing their spouse’s income, or pursuing a dream of launching their own business, entrepreneurship offers them a path for a better quality of life for themselves and their families. Throughout our experience of closely working with Latinas, we confirmed that women in our communities face exacerbated barriers to growth compared to any other population group, with increased difficulties in accessing the necessary capital and resources to scale up, as well as combined gender and cultural barriers. As a result, they experience the highest failure rates for new businesses within 5 years since inception. While facing HETP’s unstoppable growth, it has been our vision to expand our platform by offering a second program, ideally, one that would cater to high potential Latinas who have been running their businesses for a while, but face difficulties for continued expansion. Thanks to Wells Fargo and other supporters, at the SHCCNJ we are excited to launch the Latina Entrepreneurship Training Series (LETS) in 2020! The primary goal will be empowering immigrant and US-born Latina business owners who are ripe for scaling up their ventures. With a more elevated and focused curriculum than HETP, and with special emphasis on access to capital, hiring, moving into physical locations, community building, and networking amongst its participants, LETS seeks to overcome the major challenges that Latinas face in the US. Classroom sessions will run on Friday mornings in May and June 2020 in the Perth Amboy area, with 2 masterclasses combining HETP and LETS participants to take place in February and March.

Introduced in 2018, SHCCNJ’s Corporate Advisory Council was established to help increase the number as well as the success of small businesses in NJ, while also promoting economic growth and stability.
