MUSIC ACADEMY

FOR TALENTED MUSICIANS

WHAT IS THE SHEBBEAR COLLEGE MUSIC ACADEMY?

Our Music Academy is aimed at talented musicians interested in joining Shebbear College, offering the opportunity to take their musical skills to the highest level through our extensive programme.

THE ACADEMY INCLUDES:

> The use of our specialist Music School (one of the best in the UK) including our two Steinway pianos

> Free individual weekly lessons on your first study instrument

> Free Speech & Drama/LAMDA lessons

> Access to our Music Scholars’ Masterclasses

> Half termly mentoring session with Music Specialists

> The potential to apply for a Music Scholarship

> Music Enrichment Sessions every evening (for boarders)

> Membership of our Choir/Orchestra/Music Ensembles/Bands

> Regular opportunities to perform in front of large audiences

> Involvement in our School Musical Production every year

> Leadership opportunities such as coaching or mentoring younger pupils or leading an event

OUR MUSICAL ETHOS

At Shebbear College, creativity is one of our School Values, and Music & The Performing Arts are very much part of life at Shebbear College. In addition to being popular curriculum subjects, we offer a varied programme of co-curricular activities, giving all pupils the opportunity to find something to suit them.

There is a wealth of opportunities on offer with our numerous choirs, instrumental ensembles, bands and orchestras allowing pupils to experience all aspects of music. We provide options for pupils who wish to enjoy making music as a pastime as well as opportunities for those who want to take their skills to the highest level.

In recent years we have seen our pupils gain places at Music Conservatoires, study Music degrees at university, perform at UK festivals and release pop singles!

Our dedicated Music School is the best in the South West area and one of the best in the UK and is superbly equipped with the latest resources including:

INDIVIDUAL MUSIC LESSONS

Music Academy members are entitled to free lessons in one musical instrument.

We offer the following individual music lessons delivered by specialised teachers:

> Piano

> Voice

> Drums

> Flute

> Clarinet

> Saxophone

> Trumpet

> Violin > Viola

> Cello

> Strings

> Guitar

> Bass Guitar

SPEECH AND DRAMA

Also included in the Music Academy are free Speech and Drama lessons and the opportunity to enter London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) examinations.

We offer lessons with a specialist teacher in:

> Verse and Prose

> Acting

> Public Speaking

SCHOLARS’ MASTERCLASSES

Music Academy members will have the opportunity to join four Music Scholars’ Masterclasses throughout the year.

Opportunities may include:

> Composition workshop day with a professional composer

> Performance workshop day with a professional instrumentalist or choir

> Theatre/Recital trip

> Trip to a Conservatoire

WHO CAN APPLY?

Prospective students with an outstanding musical ability and a passion for music are invited to apply for our Music Academy. Applicants can excel in any genre of music, from Classical to Jazz to Rock or Pop.

APPLICANTS MUST:

> Be performing to the following standard: Age 11+ - Grade 3 or equivalent, Age 12+ - Grade 4 or equivalent, Age 13+ - Grade 5 or equivalent, Age 14/15+ - Grade 6 or equivalent and Age 16+ - Grade 7.

> Have a real passion and enthusiasm for music and be willing to contribute fully to the College community.

> Act as positive role models, showing an exemplary level of behaviour and commitment to their school work and music.

HOW TO APPLY

Please express your interest in applying for the Shebbear College Music Academy by contacting our Head of International Admissions, Lou Wivell on lwivell@shebbearcollege.co.uk for International students or our Registrar, Emily Fenwick on admissions@shebbearcollege.co.uk for UK students.

Applicants will be required to submit a video of themselves performing in their chosen instrument (can include voice) and attend an interview with our Head, Mr Jenkins, and our Head of Creative and Performing Arts, Mrs Sadler-Smith.
