SCHOLARS’ MASTERCLASSES

All Scholars will have the opportunity to attend four area-specific masterclasses throughout the year, as well as being part of the Scholars’ Dinner in the Trinity term, which celebrates the achievements of our pupils throughout the year.

ACADEMIC SCHOLARS’ MASTERCLASSES

Michaelmas Term – 1st half

The Maths of Board Games

Scholars will be joining an online lecture hosted by Gresham College and streamed at Shebbear College, with a big screen, popcorn and comfy chairs.

Professor Sarah Hart, Professor of Geometry will ask the questions, ‘Why are there chess Grandmasters, but not Grandmasters of noughts and crosses? It is because chess is “harder” – but what do we really mean by that?’ She will look at the complexity of popular games, and ask: what is the hardest game of all time?

Michaelmas Term – 2nd half

Trip to the National Marine Aquarium

Academic Scholars will spend the day at the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, attending two exciting workshops as well as having the chance to explore the aquarium. The ‘Behind the Scenes’ tour will give them a fascinating insight into many of the intricate procedures and protocols followed by aquarium engineers and biologists. They will have the chance to meet the back of house resident animals, hear about the aquarium research projects and see some of the biologists in action as they go about their daily responsibilities.

The ‘Under the Knife’ workshop is a guided dissection workshop, giving students the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the biology, anatomy, and behaviour of a squid.

ART SCHOLARS’ MASTERCLASSES

Michaelmas Term – 1st half

Storytelling workshop with Carole Evans

Local artist, Carole Evans, who is also the Learning and Engagement Manager at the Burton Art Gallery & Museum in Bideford, joins us for a practical storytelling workshop, exploring stories in extraordinary ways through the use of collage, textiles and photography. At the end of the workshop, Carole will hold a Q&A session where scholars can tap into her expertise.

Ceramics workshop with Sally Phillips

Potter, Sally Phillips will join our Scholars for a ceramics workshop, learning the hand-made craft of pottery, designing and making your own ceramics. Explore materials, develop different techniques and create something really special. At the end of the workshop, Sally will hold a Q&A session where she will answer any questions you have about the art of ceramics.

MUSIC SCHOLARS’ MASTERCLASSES

Michaelmas Term – 1st half

Strings workshop & Concert with Sorelli Strings

Critically acclaimed string trio, Sorelli Strings, will join our Music Scholars for a strings workshop and concert. Students will have the opportunity to attend a recital performance by Sorelli in the morning, before taking part in an interactive workshop and Q&A session in the afternoon. Opportunities could include students composing music for Sorelli to play!

Sorrelli performs at a wide variety of events throughout the world. TV appearances include The X Factor Finals and BBC’s ‘Great Orchestra Challenge’ whilst they have performed extensively live at events such as London Fashion Week, Glastonbury and for Her Majesty the Queen at the Golden Jubilee.

Composition workshop with Oliver Spencer-Wortley

Join award-winning Composer and Songwriter Oliver Spencer-Wortley for a composition workshop. Oliver will deliver a lecture and a Q&A session in the morning, and Scholars will be able to work with him on their own compositions during the afternoon workshop.

Oliver Spencer-Wortley studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity College of Music and is also a director at record label Cove Records. He has composed music for BBC and Netflix series as well as Marvel and Activision (Call of Duty).

DRAMA & PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARS’ MASTERCLASSES

Michaelmas Term – 1st half

Acting Workshop with Richard Hainsworth

Professional actor and voice artist, Richard Hainsworth, will be joining our Scholars for a practical acting workshop, where students will work on a piece to perform at the end of the session. He will deliver tips and advice on improving techniques and there will also be a chance for a Q&A session, where you can find out more about his expertise and career in acting.

Richard has been a professional actor and voice artist for over 30 years and has worked in theatre, TV, radio and film. TV/Film credits include Doc Martin, Silk, Emmerdale, Casualty and Killing me Softly.

Stage combat workshop

If you fancy brushing up on your stage fighting skills then this workshop is for you! Squire Stage Combat will be delivering their ‘They Fight’ workshop, designed to give students an insight into stage combat both as a practical performance skill and also as a tool for academic drama study.

Students will be taught a range of basic techniques and how to portray stage violence effectively with correct actions and reactions, as well as gaining an understanding of the basic principles of stage combat including angles, staging and misdirection.

SPORT SCHOLARS’ MASTERCLASSES

Michaelmas Term – 1st half

Trip to Chantelle Law Fitness & Pilates

Sports Scholars will be taking a trip to award winning gym, Chantelle Law Fitness & Pilates in Bideford, to take part in a session focusing on different types of training methods and how these can be used to design training plans that develop specific components of fitness. There will be an opportunity to explore the gym, as well as a Q&A session with staff at the gym.

Michaelmas Term – 2nd half

Elite Sport Workshop with Dr Clara Nielson

Professional rugby player, marine biologist and former Shebbear College Head Girl, Clara Nielson, joins our Sports Scholars for a workshop discussing the successes, challenges and obstacles on her pathway to elite sport. This session will involve insights into sports psychology and sporting performance as well as the chance to ask her any questions.
