SPORT & ACTIVITIES
Sport is a huge part of life here at Shebbear College, and as parents you already know that our PE and Games programme is inclusive and supportive everyone gets stuck in, gives it their best and cheers each other on - whether they are one of our elite athletes or are trying a sport for the first time. Aside from the competitive nature of sport, it is about getting together with friends, being outdoors and leading a healthy and active lifestyle. In this booklet I outline the PE Department’s aims and plans for the future. In order to provide the best possible opportunities for all of our pupils and to create more opportunities in sport for individuals and for the school as a whole, we will be focusing on one key sport each term with a range of other opportunities being provided in our extensive co-curricular programme. I hope the information included is useful and I am confident that under these plans, we can drive sport forward, celebrating our elite athletes whilst at the same time delivering sport for all, through our sports values of commitment, teamwork, grit, communication and enjoyment.
Robin Giles Head of Sport & Outdoor Education
Aims The three aims behind our programme are:
* * *
To provide more opportunities for all pupils to take part in as much sport as possible To enable Shebbear College to field competitive teams in one sport per term and excel in that sport To create a suitable level for all pupils to compete at one sport per term
Games lessons Michaelmas and Lent Terms In the Michaelmas and Lent terms, pupils will choose one sport (with separate choices for boys and girls) with the aim of fielding two teams per age group (depending on year group size). Where appropriate the 2nd team will be considered more of a ‘social’ team and for some of the session may be given the option to do another sport, ensuring enough players are able to support the 1st teams.
Trinity Term In the Trinity term, we are offering three choices of mixed sports and pupils can choose one of these sports to take part in which they then commit to for the term, with the opportunity to try other sports during activity time.

School Sports Portal We now have a Sports Communication page:
sport.shebbearcollege.co.uk where you can stay up to date with fixture dates, arrangements, selection and venues.
www.schoolssports.com (SOCS) is a fixture and sport calendar and communication tool for parents, students and staff. It provides: •
Fixture dates
•
Team sheets (always posted at least 48 hours in advance)
•
Venue map location
•
Fixture details (meet time, uniform, changing rooms, etc)
How to access as a parent or pupil, Step by Step for phone: •
Go to https://sport.shebbearcollege.co.uk (you can download this as a Web App on your phone by going to the address and saving to your home screen).
•
This will take you to a “What’s on” today section – you can change the date to select a date.
•
Select “Sports” on the tab at the bottom of the page, this will give you options of which sport you would like to look at (we are adding sports all the time).
•
Select the sport you would like to look at (you can change the season if you want to plan ahead to next season).
•
Select the Team you want to look at; this will then take you to a list of planned fixtures and results for that team.
•
This will take you to a details page for that fixture and team, detailing leave times, uniform and venue. We aim to update these details a minimum of 48 hours before the fixture (ideally we update these as soon as the fixture is booked, but this is not always possible).
•
If you would like to see the team sheet, click on the fixture and scroll down to “Team Sheet.” Click on “Team Sheet” to see who has been selected.
How to access as a parent or pupil, Step by Step for computer: •
Go to https://sport.shebbearcollege.co.uk
•
This will take you to a “Sports menu” detailing upcoming fixtures and events as well as show you a calendar.
•
To see specific sports, select “Sports & Team Fixtures & Results” on the left hand menu, this will give you options of which sport you would like to look at (we are adding sports all the time).
•
Select the sport you would like to look at (you can change the season if you want to plan ahead to next season).
•
Select the Team you want to look at; this will then take you to a list of planned fixtures and results for that team.
•
To see the details of the fixture, click on the “details” button, to see the team selection or team sheet, select the blue person icon on the right. We aim to update selection at least 48 hours before the fixture.
Please note: On the team sheet the term “STANDBY” refers to the player being placed on Standby, we expect the player to be involved in the fixture but will confirm whether they are needed or not within 24 hours of the fixture. There may be instances in which someone is unwell and the standby could be called into the fixture on the morning of the fixture. Although we try to minimise this, unexpected illnesses do happen and we cannot rule this out. We will always try to avoid disruption and disappointment as much as possible, we are also keen to avoid disappointment to the other players involved in a team should we have to cancel a fixture due to not being able to field a team.
Attendance expectations for fixtures It is school policy that all pupils attend fixtures on Saturdays when selected. If a student is unavailable for selection, this should be identified at the earliest point (at least one week in advance of the fixture, ideally at the beginning of the season).
Sporting Activities We are extending our Sporting Activities to cover a wider range of options. Included in the activities programme are several options for team games in addition to those covered in lessons. This will enable us to put out competitive teams in some of these sports as well as our main sports.

PE & Games Kit Exciting news - we are taking our PE and Games kit online with Samurai Sports for September 2021. Samurai provides Sportswear for leading professional sports teams across multiple sports. We have chosen to use Samurai based on the quality of their kit and their willingness to create bespoke products for Shebbear College. The new items will be very similar to the existing kit, so you will not need to purchase new items until you need them. You can view the shop and create an account at: https://store.samurai-sports.com/Registration/Login/shebbearcollege The shop provides all of the sports kit for Shebbear College and enables items to be personalised with initials on some garments. Due to the level of personalisation there will be a 6-8 week lead time on production and delivery of the items after the pre-order shop has closed. The Pre-order shop will be open approximately 3 times a year to give you ample opportunity to order suitable sports kit. We will aim to keep a small stock at school, but this should not be relied upon as this will be a limited stock for demo and sizing purposes. The first pre order shop will open on May 3rd and close on May 17th in order for us to ensure the kit arrives in good time for the start of next term.
Grays equipment Many of our sports require specialist equipment. In an effort to reduce the cost to parents we have partnered with Grays sports equipment. Grays are a leading provider in Sports equipment, specifically in Hockey and Cricket but they also stock Gilbert equipment for Rugby and Netball. Visit https://www.graysteamsports.com/collections/shebbear-college-collection to view the Grays equipment store and purchase your equipment. Items in stock will be delivered quickly and may offer a next day delivery option (depending on the items and order time).

Elite Sports Development Programme We will soon be launching our Elite Sports Development Programme for our Sports Scholars and high performance athletes. Our Teachers will spot potential and positive character attributes and put pupils forward for this programme. This is a personalised scheme where each individual is given their own unique training plan, bespoke to their needs and goals, from diet to strength and conditioning training, specialist coaching, mental and physical health and fitness. Pupils on the elite programme will take part in dedicated sessions as part of their school timetable. More information on this programme will be communicated in the future.
