INTRODUCTION The Shebbear College Strategic Development Plan 2020-2025 is a strategy which gives us cause for optimism and a strong sense of direction as we move forward. Shebbear College is a school full of talented and driven staff and pupils who together form a caring community that challenges, innovates and develops a love of learning. Our Methodist history dates back to 1829 when the school was founded by John and Samuel Thorne as Prospect College and today we are a thriving day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 3 – 18 where our pupils are ambitious, achieve highly and embrace every opportunity available to them. As part of this process, we conducted a great deal of research with staff, pupils and parents to find out what it is that makes us special and stands us apart from other schools. Undoubtedly, the quality that is mentioned time and time again is our personal approach - our ability and passion to understand each pupil as an individual, to see their potential and to ignite their spark. A lot of schools will also say that they do this, but I am proud to say that at Shebbear, thanks to our smaller size and our dedicated staff, we really do look at each child in a different way; we find out what makes them tick and we develop new and innovative ways of teaching to suit them as individuals, so that they each achieve their best in all areas of their education.

Our world is changing fast and we recognise that we must continue to revolutionise our teaching and learning and adapt our academic community so that our pupils thrive, whilst retaining our individual focus and our community values. This strategic plan has been developed in response to the research and consultations carried out with our staff, pupils and parents, and represents a summary of the overall priorities for Shebbear College over the next five years. We hope that our community will be inspired, engaged and reassured by these plans. We have an excellent starting point, with many great examples of innovation, engaged and enthusiastic staff and equally talented and motivated pupils. We look forward to setting out on the next phase of our exciting journey.

MISSION

We are a school which truly understands and cares about each individual. Pupils benefit from our smaller size, nurturing community and pioneering methods of teaching and learning. We will challenge and inspire our pupils through interactive, supportive and creative teaching, discovering and devising innovative methods and content to ensure that each individual is getting the very best tailored learning experience throughout their time at Shebbear College. We will shape each individual experience, develop each individual talent and celebrate each individual personality. We will unlock the potential in each pupil inspiring their ambition and passion for learning and for life.

ETHOS Our philosophy is based on our six core values: Confidence, Courage, Courtesy, Creativity, Compassion and Curiosity. We encourage our pupils to discover these qualities in themselves, allowing them to grow in mind, body and spirit. As a school with strong Christian foundations, these values permeate everything we do and reinforce our strong Shebbear community.

OUR AIMS AND VALUES We are extremely proud of our enthusiastic and ambitious pupils, who demonstrate our six Shebbear values in all that they do.

CONFIDENCE To instil the confidence to be themselves, to express their opinions, to believe in themselves and to pursue their ambitions.

COURAGE To build the courage to make mistakes and learn from them, the resilience and persistence to bounce back and try again and the spirit to take measured risks and embrace new opportunities.

COURTESY

To encourage our pupils to be courteous, polite and thoughtful members of the local and global community . Courtesy shines through in all our pupils and is often commented on by visitors to the school.

CREATIVITY To inspire the creativity to explore. Self-discovery and creative expression are encouraged and there is no pressure to conform to stereotypes. We see things – and pupils differently and celebrate uniqueness and individuality.

COMPASSION To nurture the compassion to respect the needs of others and show acceptance, tolerance and care. Our pupils are kind. They are unpretentious and modest, aware and understanding of their own and others’ feelings and beliefs.

CURIOSITY To awaken the curiosity to learn, ask questions, investigate concepts and seek new experiences . Our pupils are ambitious and inquisitive, inspired by their teachers and by the world around them.

Offer an engaging curriculum and co-curriculum which is varied, innovative and inspirational, providing our ambitious pupils with a range of opportunities to develop skills that will prepare them for life.

Complete and embed our new faculty model which will focus on learning within the following areas: Sport & Outdoor Education, Creative, Digital & Performing Arts, English & Linguistics, STEM (Maths & Computing and Science & Technology) and Humanities.

Continue to develop, refurbish and invest in our site, resources and facilities, including our digital learning infrastructure and the creation of ‘thinking spaces’.

Ensure that our operations and services, including catering and accommodation provision, meet the highest possible standards.
