Holiday Season in Sheboygan County!
Holiday Season in Sheboygan County!
Keep Our Dollars Local: Think B.I.G. and Shop Small!
According to data cited by the U.S. Small Business Administration, for every $100 spent at local businesses:
• $68 stays within the local economy, compared to $43 when spent at non-local chain stores.
Deidre Martinez
• $44 stays in the local economy when spent at local retailers, while only $14 remains local when spent at national chains.
Local
Spending at small businesses generates 3.5 times more local economic activity than shopping with online giants. Small businesses are more likely to reinvest in the local community - whether through hiring local workers, purchasing from local suppliers, or sponsoring local events and initiatives. According to SBA data, 64% of net new jobs in the U.S. are created by small businesses. Supporting local businesses helps maintain and grow these jobs.
With the holidays upon us, I cannot stress enough the importance of shopping local. When you shop online, $0 stays in our community! With that said, I had a blast celebrating Small Business Saturday on November 30th. I traveled all over Sheboygan County, visiting 24 Chamber member businesses and surprising local shoppers with over $1,000 worth of free Chamber Cash. Of course, it’s fun to surprise local folks with free money, but I also know that 100% of the value of that Chamber Cash will be spent at one of our Chamber member businesses, so everyone wins.
If you’re not sure what to purchase for your loved ones this holiday season, stop by the Chamber office and purchase some Chamber Cash today!
As the end of the year approaches, I want to personally thank all our members for your continued support of the

Happy Holidays dear friends, Anna
I’ve always been a big believer in the value of round tables. After retiring from the Sheboygan Chamber, I realized how much I missed facilitating these groups. Round tables keep me connected to a network of incredible people, and they offer a unique opportunity for both business growth and problemsolving.
What sets round tables apart is the trust and confidentiality they offer. Participants open up about challenges they’re facing, while knowing that they’re in a safe space. Often, they’re surprised to learn they’re not alone. Sharing struggles with others who have faced similar issues is incredibly powerful, and it leads to real, actionable solutions.
One recurring theme in recent discussions has been staffing. Businesses, large and small, are struggling to find the right talent - whether entry-level or experienced. While many companies are thriving, the inability to fill key roles is holding them back from reaching their full potential.
Round tables offer a solution through empathy. Instead of offering judgmental advice like, “Have you tried this?” participants share what worked for them in similar situations. This peer support leads to practical solutions and a sense of relief for everyone involved.
Another challenge that often comes up is the generational shift in leadership. Baby boomers are retiring, and many business owners are concerned about how to transfer their knowledge to younger leaders with different priorities. Some companies have found success by bringing back retired workers on a part-time basis, offering a creative solution to bridge this gap.
While some chambers in Green Bay and Fox Cities offer self-facilitated round tables, I believe that having an experienced facilitator is key. A good facilitator ensures the conversation stays on track and that everyone has a chance to contribute, keeping the group productive and balanced.
For round tables to be truly beneficial, consistency is key. Regular attendance helps build trust and deepens relationships. Whether you’re a non-profit executive, a sales elader, or a business owner, showing up consistently ensures you get the most value from these groups.
I facilitate several round tables for different professional groups, using the PeerSpectives program developed by the Edward Lowe Foundation. If you’re interested in becoming a
facilitator, they offer a great training program in southwestern Michigan.
If I weren’t facilitating, I’d still be attending round tables. The insights, connections, and solutions that come from these discussions are invaluable. Whether you’re dealing with staffing issues, leadership transitions, or simply looking to grow your business, round tables offer a supportive, collaborative environment to tackle challenges head-on.
If I haven’t convinced you yet - listen to this testimonial we received from a round table participant!:
Earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending a business roundtable organized by the Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce, and I’m eager to share my experience with fellow business owners considering participating in future events.
From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this event was well organized to foster an environment of collaboration and learning. The setting was professional yet welcoming, allowing for easy conversations among attendees. The facilitator kept the group on track and solving problems.
That was a major takeaway for me. We were working together to help each other make decisions that would lead us to solutions to our individual problems.
I have been to many similar meetings over the years, and they were all disappointing, for one reason or another. Most fell short because attendees spent their time together complaining about their circumstances or telling each other what they should do. The lively discussion focused on challenges, allowing each executive in the room to provide ideas that they can take or leave as they see fit. Each speaker brought a unique perspective, providing insights that were both thought-provoking and highly relevant to my business, even though they all came from different industries.
One of the highlights for me was the networking opportunity. The roundtable attracted a diverse group of business owners from various sectors, allowing for the exchange of ideas and the building of new relationships. It was refreshing to connect with peers who are equally passionate about their businesses and the positive impact they aim to create in the community.
When it was over, the meeting notes were sent to all participants, making it easier to participate during the event and recall great ideas afterward. He also included contact information for attendees so we could all stay in touch.
Attending the Chamber of Commerce business roundtable was a very rewarding experience. Not only did I gain practical insights and strategies to apply to my business, but I also left feeling more connected to the local business community. I wholeheartedly recommend these roundtables to any business owner looking to grow and thrive.
As the holiday season picks up speed, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on a few recent successes and share some exciting updates - because what better time to celebrate progress than during this season of gratitude and connection?
Over the past month, I had the opportunity to meet incredible individuals at the Chicago & Madison Hiring Fair, the Fon du Lac Veterans Resource Connection event, and our very own Lakeshore Community Job Fair here in Sheboygan County. These events led to a fantastic boost in our candidate jobseeker portal, with 45+ new professionals ready to make meaningful job connections. It’s always rewarding to see our community grow with such talented and motivated individuals.
On another exciting note, we’ve given https://work.sheboygan.org/ a fresh, beautiful new layout! The site is now even better at showcasing our transition resources and the many reasons why Sheboygan County is a fantastic place to live, work, and thrive.
The “Make Your Mark” initiative is designed to create an environment of belonging and drive successful retention by offering face-to-face support, navigation, and connections to vital community resources. Whether someone’s exploring career opportunities, connecting with local businesses, or diving into all that makes this community special, we offer everything they need to feel at home and inspired.
