“TRY TO BE A RAINBOW IN SOMEONE’S CLOUD.”

-MAYA ANGELOU

NOTE FROM ELLE I cannot express my excitement when it comes to Halloween. The little kid in me comes out and if you would let me, I would have four costume changes the day of. I’m not a big, spooky Halloweener, but rather more of a fantasy, eye-popping, jaw-dropping funny one. If everyone reading this magazine at some point in life has not thrown a Halloween party, I say why not? It’s a theme that is so beyond easy and fun that no matter what you do, you cannot go wrong. Having a Halloween party means you get to bring out the crazy, scary, kooky, wild and dreamy side in you. You know, the side we all just tuck away because life says we should. On that note, I want to introduce to you our SHEentertains, glitter girl of the issue, Tiffany Pratt. I have had the pleasure of meeting some extremely interesting individuals in my life, from celebrities, to athletes, to philanthropists and fashionistas, but no one as kind, colourful and true to who they are as Tiffany and it shows in everything she touches. This issue is perfect to who she is; creative, wild, I’m sure at times kooky and definitely a dreamer who never has to wake up because she’s living her dream to the fullest everyday. So what are you waiting for, let your imagination go wild and let’s get this party started!

A SIMPLE TWIST ON A CLASSIC FAVOURITE Donuts are one of our favourite classic childhood desserts. A great and simple way to dress up plain store bought donuts and bring them to life is by sticking these fun, edible googly eyes on these sugary treats. How cute are these little guys? You almost don’t want to eat them! The eyes can be bought at any bulk or specialty store.

BEET BEETS&&GOAT GOAT CHEESE CHEESE SALAD With Fall and Halloween being the theme of this issue, I pulled out a simple recipe that I love to make when entertaining my guests; goat cheese mint and beet salad. An easy way to prepare this is to pre-make everything and serve them on these black Japanese porcelain spoons. Fun and bite-size, I think everybody should own at least 30 of these sleek and stylish spoons to make your appetizers look fancy as you serve them to your guests.

WHAT YOU NEED

SERVINGS: 30 6 Beets 3 Tbsps Olive Oil Chopped Mint Salt and Pepper to taste Goat Cheese Optional: Caramelized Walnuts

THE RECIPE 1. Fill a pot with water and boil over

the beets and chop them into the cubes. Beets will stain your hands red, so be sure to either wear gloves or prepare in advance before your guests arrive!

2. Finely chop the mint.

5.

Using regular or flavoured goat cheese such as blueberry, gently tear the cheese into pieces and toss all the ingredients together into a bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and add salt and pepper for taste. 10

GET FUN AND COLOURFUL FOR FALL When you think of entertaining, what’s the first thing that pops into your mind? “What has never been done?” is the question that I usually ask myself. I like to remake the wheel as much as I can. Showing people a textural experience or using things one would never imagine is usually my speed of WOW factor. But, the most important thing that lingers is: who will cook or cater? I do not do well in the kitchen! If you could have anyone as a guest at your party, dead or alive, who would it be? Iris Apfel. I love her.

SWEET COCKTAILS These two cocktails have become our ultimate favourites for Fall. Nothing speaks to us better than chocolate and delicious Autumn fruit. We hope you enjoy making these cocktails as much as we did!

THE RECIPE

WHAT YOU NEED 11 oz Nutella 11 oz Milk 9 oz Heavy Cream 1/3 cup Sugar 3 oz Pure Grain Alcohol

Place a pot on the stove on low heat. Add milk, Nutella, sugar and heavy cream. Stir with a wooden spoon until the Nutella melts and reaches a boiling point. Remove the pot from the stove and allow the mixture to cool. Add the grain alcohol and pour in a glass of wine or liquor bottle. Refrigerate for 24 hours and serve to all your guests!

This past summer while planning my beautiful cousin’s wedding, I had the pleasure of spending quality time with her mother-in-law, Lucia who shares the same passion for cooking, baking, crafting and cocktailing as I do. She shared with me a cocktail recipe that I just could not keep to myself. It is so simple and delicious, it’s like drinking a dessert! Hope you enjoy it. 20

ME O W

Dressing up doesn’t have to be difficult. For our Halloween party, we decided to make it a kitty theme with all the girls dressed in black. We painted on adorable little whiskers and noses and cut the cat ears out of black Bristol board paper that we glued onto a dollar store headband. Simple, low-budget and super meo-WOW!

GETTING CRAFTY

Every kid loves to get their hands dirty, which is why a great kid’s party is never complete without a fun and simple arts and craft activity. The pretty pink crafting paper we used isn’t just for decoration, it’s to let the kid’s get a little messy with their paint so you won’t have to worry about being left with a huge mess in the end. Not only is arts and craft fun for kids, but it’s also a great way for parents to let their inner child out! It’s a simple and easy cleanup, and what’s even better is that all supplies can be purchased at your local dollar store! 33

DIY WATERCOLOR TOTE BAG

There’s no better way to prepare for this Halloween holiday than making DIY trick or treat bags. It’s a simple, easy and fun way for your kids to get crafty by making these personalized watercolour tote bags that are not only perfect for Halloween, but also great for everyday use.

1 2

To prevent paint from bleeding through the fabric, insert a non-porous surface into the bag before painting. Keep paper towels on hand while you paint. The food colouring paint will go on light, so you will have to go over areas you want to be darker with more paint.

Dilute food colours of your choice with water in glass containers to create the “watercolour paint.

3

Clean your brushes with water and dry with paper towels before painting with a new colour. Allow paint to dry before proceeding to next step.

Download graphics to trace onto bag or sketch out your own design on a blank sheet of paper.

5

Place paper inside of bag. You will be able to see the design through the bag. Position graphics and trace the graphic with a fine tip fabric marker.

6

Tips: Protect your workspace the dye will stain everything (including your hands). A hair dryer will speed up drying time. 37

HAVING FUN WITH FLORALS Halloween is my favourite time of year to have fun, be silly and do things I normally wouldn’t do. It’s very easy to find household items and dress them up to entertain your guests, kids or yourself. Here’s a great DIY that can make a simple vase look a little spooky and a whole lot of fun! All you have to do is cut or print out some fun faces on sticky vinyl paper and apply it on the vase to bring it alive!

TIPS

When buying hydrangeas from the store, always place them directly into water immediately. To make them last longer, cut off all the leaves from the flower and trim the stem on a diagonal under cold running water. This will allow for more water to be absorbed. To prevent the water from getting drawn to the head of the flower, dip the stem into boiling hot water for 30 seconds. When preparing to put the hydrangeas into the vase, use room temperature water and add two drops of mild dish washer soap and a teaspoon of sugar. Be sure to change the water every 2-3 days. Having beautiful, long-lasting flowers is all about maintenance, so be sure to take good care of your hydrangeas to get the most out of them!
