This research is based in the Lake Victoria Basin (LVB) in Kenya, which lies within the tropics and experiences a warm, humid climate that is characterized by
high temperatures between 200C to 350C and high relative humidity between 40% to 60%. The literature reviewed focuses on deeply understanding the LVB; its
geographical context, topographical and climatic characteristics, through the amalgamation of information from various published and unpublished sources. The
culture of the region is outlined through the exploration of the history, culture and building technology of the Luo in Kochogo, Kisumu County and Abasuba in
Kisaku, Homabay County. The literature reviewed formed a basis for research parameters and variables investigated during fieldwork.
