Not everybody has a sister, a wife or a daughter, but everybody has a mother. Mothers are precious. If any other’s mother is like mine, she’s strong-willed, opinionated and stubborn, but she also loves unconditionally, protects her own ferociously and never misses an opportunity to remind me where I came from.

I almost never grew up with my mother. When I was 4 years old, my mother developed a precancerous ovarian cyst that caused her to near knock on death’s door. She thankfully had wonderful surgeons.

My mother had overcome the pain of passing and not knowing her unborn years before I was born. Through losing pregnancies, nearly losing me in delivery and barely surviving an ovarian cyst, my mom has earned the right to remind me that she brought me into this world and she can take me out, ha!

ON THE COVER

Up until this point, however, there has not been an early-detection test for ovarian cancer, which is exactly why the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation came to be. Carmen Brown details Laura’s story on page 25, in which she recalls loved ones’ testimonies of how Laura, in her final days battling this invisible killer, dedicated her efforts to founding Alabama’s only nonprofit organization whose sole purpose is to fund research for an early-detection test. A test that might’ve saved her life among countless others.

This year around 20,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Less than half will survive five years after their diagnoses. Out of all deadly gynecologic cancers, ovarian cancer is the most fatal. Women like my mother are lucky. Surviving all that my mother has and calling her lucky doesn’t seem to be a fair statement, but sadly, other mothers like her could be at risk for such a disease and not even know it. The symptoms of ovarian cancer are inconspicuous, with some being written off as signs of one’s menstrual cycle or menopause. For those that discover their diagnosis, it’s often too late.

This one-of-a-kind art collection must be seen to be believed.

ARTS CULTURE&

That interest in tiny things began when she was a child and has only grown since. Her grandfather owned a print shop where her father worked after his day job as an engineer. The typesetting there was done by hand compositing, and each character

or symbol was a small piece of metal.

What began as a hobby that sometimes got Karen Libecap scolded as a child has led to a full-time passion, awards and a stunning collection of tiny works of “Whenart.Iwas little, I would always draw really small and write my name really small—and get in trouble in school for it,” Karen says.

14 Fall 2022

“My mom was an artist—she painted, knitted, sculpted, everything—so I grew up around that,”

W

With those, she began creating her first collection of tiny art—and her love for all things small was born. But her passion for art had already been ingrained in her.

Karen’s job at the shop was to file the tiny pieces when they were finished with them—partly because she was the only one who could see them well enough. In between filing, she would gather leftover scraps of paper to write stories and draw on.

“I’ve met so many people and heard positive responses that have been helpful and keep me doing what I’m doing,” she says.

She tries to add as much detail as she can to each one, with pieces now taking her anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days to complete. “It started out like therapy,” Karen says. “I would just get lost in the painting. I had no idea it would take off like it

“I love that I can be quirky and random. When you look at my collection, it’s like walking inside my head.”

“It was a natural thing for me,” Karen says. “I can put as much detail in them as I want.”

She now uses watercolors, gouache and oils to create paintings that are 1.25-by-1.25 inches or smaller—and a very tiny brush. The process takes a great deal of patience and attention to detail, so it’s not surprising few artists create tiny paintings.

Residents can see Karen and her work at the Bluff Park Art Show on Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hoover Metropolitan Complex. She will also be at the Kentuck Festival of the Arts from Oct. 15-16 at Kentuck Park in Northport, Alabama.

she says. “She was always encouraging me to follow myAfterpassion.”high school, Karen planned to go into illustration but ended up earning a degree in graphic design from Kent State University. But after college, getting married, having three children and working as an art director in several large cities, she set aside her paint and drifted away from art.

“I didn’t realize before doing the shows how important it was to meet the artist,” she says. “I’m not a fan of being front and center, but doing the shows helped make me more personable and put myself out there.”

decided to go back to her “little” roots and create a tiny piece of art—and it worked. The miniature size held her attention and allowed her to finish many of the pieces during one sitting.

16 Fall MEET2022

That changed after she got divorced and reconnected with her high school sweetheart in 2009. He asked her why she had stopped drawing, and soon after, she decided to start painting again. When she first started back, she focused on traditional-sized pieces.

As more events start back following the pandemic, Karen says she’s enjoyed participating in art shows and tries to do as many as she can.

But halfway through one of those projects, she would want to move on to something else. She

So, she began creating larger abstract landscapes and portraits during that time, but her true love remained with her tiny paintings. As more art shows and events began opening back up, Karen

“I love that I can be quirky and random. When you look at my collection, it’s like walking inside my head,” she says. “The ones I choose to paint, I can connect with in one way or another. Maybe it’s a favorite toy or my brother’s favorite food. I pick something that connects with me.”

She didn’t truly realize how important those interactions and art shows were until the pandemic hit and cancelled them. “Because the pieces are so small, it’s hard to take a good picture of them,” she says. “They’re something you have to see in person to really appreciate.”

would.”Some of her hyper-realistic tiny paintings include a grouping of Fisher Price Little People, cheeseballs, album covers, drinks and characters. She only creates 20 prints of each painting, so once a design sells out, it’s gone. Each original piece gives her the opportunity to let her creativity run wild.

While she hasn’t kept any of her paintings, she did come close once. “There was one of a jar of

pickles, and I just really liked how it turned out,” Karen recalls. “I’d decided if it didn’t sell at the show, I’d keep it. But then a guy came running up to my tent at the end and said, ‘Please tell me you still have the pickles,’ and he bought it.”

HooversMagazine.com 19

No matter what she’s crafting, each piece requires her to solve an equation to fit so much detail on such a small canvas. “When I paint, I look at it as a math problem—as one part is in relationship to another,” she says. “If I’m off one dot, it will change everything.”Whileher canvas may be small, the possibilities of what she can create are anything but.

took full advantage of those opportunities.

When she isn’t painting tiny artwork for shows and festivals, she also accepts commissioned projects. Her commissioned pieces include a lot of pet artwork, though she has had more unique requests—like a latte machine and defibrillator.

That has also included attending art festivals, where she recently won best of show. She took home the award at the Main St. Fort Worth Arts Festival in Texas this past spring for her miniature paintings.“I’mstill

BY CARMEN BROWN PHOTOS BY LLOYD BEARD & CONTRIBUTED SPORTS&

Vestavia Hills teacher and educator has been enjoying retired life for 17 years, spending a lot of time sharing meals with her husband, Ken, daughter, Lacee, and her two grandsons, Zach, 17, and Hudson. But there was a time not too long ago when she was in too much pain to cook and too weak to go buy groceries.

This year, 19,880 women like Alice and Laura will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Known as “the invisible killer,” symptoms can be vague, causing many women to not be diagnosed until it is too late.

A

It began in early 2008, when she began dealing with bloating, weight gain and fatigue—symptoms she wrote off at first as being “normal” for a woman her age. But when unbearable abdominal pain she

“We didn’t think to check to make sure the crevices were filled in and when it was in the oven, it exploded everywhere,” she says, chuckling. “Half of it was still in the pan, so we were still able to eat some, but I hadn’t seen cake explode like that in years!”Theformer

26 Fall 2022

Around that same time, 24-year-old Laura Crandall was just a couple of years out of college, having graduated from Auburn University with a degree in hospitality management and working at the Hotel at Auburn University & Dixon Conference Center, where she met her future husband, Walter Brown. In the midst of planning her wedding, like Alice, Laura began having digestive issues and sharp abdominal cramping. When she went for her annual exam, her physician said it was IBS due to stress and prescribed her steroids. By September, when she began feeling full after only a few bites of food and the pain was getting worse, Walter took her to the hospital.

Laura, who was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive

subtype known as Small Cell Carcinoma of the Ovaries with Hypercalcemia Tendencies (which has been found in a child as young as 4 months old), lost her battle a little over a year later. She and Walter had been married for just 13 months. Shortly before she passed in December 2009, she and her family started a nonprofit to change the one major contributing factor to the survival rate: the fact that there is no test for early detection.

“I had prepared my family, because I just knew I was dying,” Alice says. “I didn’t know many women who had had it, but the ones I knew of didn’t survive. That’s pretty scary.”

“When we were filling out the paperwork, Laura

“I didn’t even consider ovarian cancer because I had had a hysterectomy,” she says. “But my doctor told me this is the case for 15 percent of women diagnosed.”Lessthan half of women diagnosed survive more than five years.

The Laura Crandall Brown Foundation is the only nonprofit organization in Alabama dedicated solely to fund research to develop an early detection test. Located in Lorna Square in Hoover, the organization has been instrumental in funding research, as well as offering emotional and financial assistance to women with ovarian cancer and their families.

HooversMagazine.com 27

Misconceptions about the disease, such as that it only affects middle-aged women, also play a role in delayedPerhapsdiagnosis.whatwas most shocking for Alice was the fact she had a hysterectomy 23 years prior. She did not even have ovaries.

They’re about $800 and typically only tested in high-risk women.

“Success is not a continuum,” Kellye says. She believes that every time you step on the court, you need to prove yourself. Right now, she is watching the team to see who will step into the shoes of leaders. Kellye says the team has some growing to do, but that is what they are doing now. With eight rising seniors, the team will have plenty of girls to take charge and lead this fall.

Why did you want to coach volleyball as a career?

Spain Park High School’s Volleyball Coach

Kellye says that coaching was not always a part of her career plan. Initially, she had planned to go into physical therapy, but after some time at Mississippi State, she realized that was not the right path for her. Kellye knew that she wanted to work with kids, and she believes that coaches are some of the most impactful people in the lives of children. With that in mind, Kellye decided to make coaching her career. Despite her long history with volleyball, Kellye admits that coaching did not exactly come naturally. “I’ve had a lot of failures in coaching as far as how to approach kids and parents,” she says. “In the end, it’s made me a better person and a better coach the way that some things have played out.”

Looking forward, what are some things your team will be doing in an attempt to win the title again this coming season?

Is there anything that you do with the girls to team-build off the court?

Spain Park High School had never won a women’s volleyball championship in the school’s history. In 2021, they did just that. Under the leadership of head coach Kellye Bowen, Spain Park’s women’s volleyball team brought home the school’s first state championship title. Here, Kellye talks about her coaching journey, the championship and the upcoming season.

The way that they led with love and kindness is something that she thinks every coach should take note of: “One thing that they really taught me was how to lead with grit and grace.” While three of the seniors from last season will not be playing on a college team, two will be continuing their volleyball careers as student-athletes in college. Kellye believes that no matter what path they choose for their lives, they will be successful because of their determination. “They’re great players,” she says. “But they’re even better people.”

Kellye draws everything back to the relationship the girls had with one another. She says, “The love they had for each other was the greatest I’ve seen for any team I’ve played on or coached.” The team treated each other with respect and love, something that Kellye says every team strives for. She also credits the determination and resilience of the team as something that made them special. They had the ability to recognize what they needed to work on and put forth an effort to fix it. Even though the girls faced obstacles, they were able to overcome those bumps in the road, and, as Kellye says, “They rose to the occasion.”

Matt is relatively new to the restaurant industry. Originally from Lafayette, Louisiana, he made a living through the environmental business. In 2016, Matt says he sat down at Walk-On’s with a business partner to discuss their intentions of purchasing another environmental company in Houston, Texas. As the two sat there, enjoying their meal and talking about their plans, Brandon Landry, the owner of the Walk-On’s franchise, walked into the restaurant. Brandon came up to Matt and his partner to ask what they were working on. When they told him, his response was, “I’m gonna tell you two things: Get out of the oil and gas business and buy a Walk-On’s franchise.” With that, Matt and his partner pivoted toward the food industry, and he says it is one of the best things that has ever happened to him.

Matt says that one of the things that sets Walk-On’s apart from other sports bars is the customer demographics. While most

One of the things that Matt says he’s learned is how good leadership can affect so many people. “Number one,” he says, “is that it starts at the top.” That is one of the things that he thinks sticks out when you think of Walk-On’s. He believes that the way owners Brandon and Drew compose themselves influences the way Walks-On’s locations all around the country are run. “The way they treat people and run their business,” he says, “trickles down the whole corporate office in Baton Rouge, through the franchisees, into our team and they project it to our customers.”

What is one thing that being a franchisee of Walk-On’s has taught you?

The Voodoo Shrimp is the mouthwatering item that Matt says people love. The Voodoo Shrimp is a classic Cajunmeets-bar food concoction. The item consists of shrimp wrapped in bacon and stuffed with cream cheese and pickled jalapeno. The shrimp is served on a bed of corn grits and finished with a drizzle of sweet chile. “It’s our version of shrimp and grits,” he says.

menu at Hoover?

Matt says that the people are mainly the best part of opening the restaurant in Hoover. With their Southern hospitality, the people in the city of Hoover have embraced the restaurant as a part of the community. They also love sports, too. Another thing that makes Hoover the perfect place for a sports bar is the weather. Matt says, “We have three months of spring and three months of fall, where everybody can sit outside, watch games and enjoy themselves.” Those three things make the city of Hoover a place where a restaurant like Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux can thrive.

sports bars bring in far more men than women, Walk-On’s ratio of male to female customers is almost equal. Matt says, “In typical sports bars, demographics are 80 percent men and 20 percent women. Walk-On’s demographics are 52 percent men and 48 percent women.” He finds that the demographics at Walk-On’s are directly related to the quality of the food that the restaurant serves.

Other than its Cajun influence, what do you think makes Walk-On’s different than other sports bars?

That’s not even the best part. The home, as Philip recalls, was actually home to Paul and Deanie Perkins and their son, Alabama rhythm and blues musician Eddie Hinton. Eddie was a Muscle Shoals session musician from 1967 until his death in 1995. Eddie was honored with a bronze star, which was presented to him by the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2018, he was officially inducted in the AMHOF. But still today, his boundless sense of musical joy remains alive in the pop-modern that adorns these once tasteless walls.

Rare are those with both an eye for eclectic design and a passionate, restorative talent. Jim Barron and Philip Pieper, however, are an exception against the norm.Their newly renovated home, which was originally listed as a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house, was actually a few bedrooms, one shallow bathroom and a hole not even a toilet but a hole for a commode in a storage closet in the carport. Fervent in their mission to create their forever home, they phoned a friend Philip’s architect and brother-inlaw, Tim Lucy, to be exact.

From décor one just adores, to renovating a 1954 home into a gorgeous staple house, to reviving Eddie Hinton’s legacy, to benefitting worthy causes, Jim and Philip prove to be outstanding citizens ones worthy of artistic praise and just a general, “well done, folks.”

Jim requested that their contractor, Korey Nations of NATCO, not open up the kitchen because open concepts are not “midcentury modern.” The couple utilized cabinetry from Brewer Cabinets and stone for their countertops from Cutstone Company.

Jim and Philip say they went through more than 30 different residential designs before they decided on a floor plan that they loved.

The couple opted for midcentury blues to complement their art. This statement piece was painted by Jim’s aunt’s college roommate, Merlyn Dykes. His family came into possession of the piece when Jim’s grandparents visited his aunt and her roommate for dinner one evening. They saw the landscape and said, “That’s coming home with us!” Of course, Merlyn was thrilled.

Jim and Philip began renovations on Feb. 17, 2020, just one month shy of the Covid-19 pandemic. Oddly enough, the couple actually added the pool first soon after the purchase of the home in 2019. Jim says he used to sit outside in the dirt just to look at the landscaping design, which is complements of Randy McDaniel.

Serving His Community

Clint began his career as a dispatcher in the early ’90s with the Jacksonville State University Police

He was sitting in a room with 500 other applicants at the Wynfrey Hotel. It took multiple days because there were so many people. The veteran officer would spend the next 27 years doing what he loves - serving his community.

John Hawkins Parkway/Highway 150 was a twolane road with not as much traffic when Clint joined the HPD. Wow, the traffic now! “We only had two

Department. Then in 2000, he was ready to move to a more extensive department and found his home with the Hoover Police Department (HPD). “My interest in law enforcement has remained the same throughout my career: to serve. Growing up in a single-parent home, I felt the need to serve and help.”Inhis 27 years in law enforcement, 22 of those years were with the HPD. For Clint, looking back on his growing career also reminds him of where the city he calls home was during its growth.

“There were officers that patrolled my Birmingham neighborhood when I was a kid that kept the streets safe for me to play. That sense of safety allowed me to walk to the library, school, ballparks or a friend’s house without the fear that some kids have today in society. I wanted to pay it forward,” Clint says.

Chick-Fil-A restaurants in Hoover, and one was inside the Galleria. You could drive from Highway 31 to South Shades Crest Road without stopping at a traffic light. The city has grown so much during my years here.”

Like most officers, Clint has stories. Some sad, some hilarious. He says he will keep them to himself to protect the innocent, but some of his most memorable times at Hoover, aside from casework, would be working holiday traffic, special events (baseball, golf tournaments, protective details) and evenTheprotests.cityhas grown, and its police department, which started with only two officers in the 1960s, has also grown. “When I was hired in 2000, I was one of five or six African American officers out of 120 officers (today, the department has around 200 officers). I was never treated any differently than anyone else. The Hoover Police and Hoover Fire departments are some of the most professional public servants. I won’t call names, but people in my chain of command were directly responsible for my professional development. They all practiced servant leadership and were willing to do the right thing regardless of public opinion. They also believed in getting ready and preparing you for the

Another key event in Clint’s career came while working church traffic. At times, area churches hire onsite officers to help with traffic and provide security on Sunday mornings. “I started directing traffic on Sundays with some friends. After 9/11, I became a regular. The humble officer became popular with teens and kids, and they would often sit with him and his family during worship service

times. His connection to the youth led to Clint being assigned to the youth building and as a chaperone on several trips with the choir during the summer.” I am not saying I am the best role model, but before I knew it, I had become a mentor to some kids involved. One of them just got promoted at the Hoover Police Department. He did it all on his own. No help from me. It’s just that the church became home, and I have made friends there that I will have for a lifetime.”

perfect fit for the new opportunity that offered a more stable schedule. “I love law enforcement and serving my communities. However, I have children that are very involved in activities at this age. I decided it was time to focus more on my family life and being ‘dad’ rather than being called away from family gatherings or missing special holidays. My new job allows me to still serve in a different way.”

After time spent in the summer months visiting beaches and lakes, bobbing on foam noodles or skim-boarding waves on 30-A, we’re all ready for something a bit different. Weekend escapes in the cooler months such as football bye-weeks here in SEC country are the ideal time to explore someplace new, or even revisit a familiar destination but see it in a whole new way.

Chattanooga, which is just a short two-hour trip Northeast of Birmingham, ticks a lot of boxes for so many different types of travelers. So much has been written about the hiking and scenic-overlooks of Ruby Falls and Lookout Mountain. Many readers have probably already visited the famed Chattanooga Choo-Choo and the phenomenal Tennessee Aquarium. However, there is so much more to Chattanooga! Let’s explore what a visit would look like from a local’sperspective.Falltravel

Tucked into the heart of uber-cool Southside, stands Common House. This white-stucco-ed former YMCA building has been exquisitely converted into a coveted “third space” that needs to be experienced to be appreciated. Third spaces exist to create community and connection, outside of home and work. Common House is a private Chattanoo ga social club with six hotel rooms (plus one suite) available to the public. Hotel guests have access to the entire club while on-site: four bars, fitness center, intimate restaurant, co-working spaces, cabana-lined pool, podcasting studio and positively the coolest vibe in town.

WHERE TO STAY

Recent years have seen the addition of several great new hotels in the Chattanooga area, as well as the sprucing up of some venerable favorites.

The crowd here is strictly 21+, so plan accordingly. Memberships are available in case you never want to leave.

Nestled in the arts-rich Bluff View Art District, this bed-and-breakfast-style inn is actually three turn-of-the-centu ry homes overlooking the Tennessee River. From the front porch of the T.C. Located within walking distance of many of Chattanoo ga’s must-see sites means you can park the car and venture out afoot to dine and do.

If you’d just rather sweat it out, a session or two at Sisu Sauna should do just the trick.

Yes, any trip to Chattanooga should include something outdoors, especially in the fall when the leaves are changing and the temperatures are most conducive to being outside.

For something completely differ ent, get on the Tennessee River by kayak to observe the endangered gray bats as they take to the eve ning sky in search of insects. On this 30-mile paddle of Nickajack Lake, you may even spy an osprey or the occasional bald eagle, so pack your binoculars!

If you’re game to stay on track with fitness goals while you travel- and those Lookout Mountain hikes weren’t enough- pop into Kyle House Fit ness for a class.

Chattanooga is teeming with creatives and you can find something inspiring at almost any turn.

Take the recently renovated Lookout Mountain Incline to the top of the mountain, where you can visit Point Park (site of the Civil War Battle Above the Clouds). Back at the bottom, it is a short drive to Ruby Falls, Cloudland Canyon and Rock City, which is celebrating its 90th year of visitors! Locals suggest buying tickets ahead of time to spend more time oohing-and-aahing over the views and less time waiting in lines.

Warehouse Row, which is a converted Civil War stone fort in downtown Chat tanooga, has always been a great shop ping draw with plenty of national names you already know. Do yourself a favor and shop Embellish, which specializes in names like Rag & Bone and Veronica Beard. If something for the home is what you seek, just go directly to Revival, where the offerings include one-of-a-kind antiques and vintage finds, as well as gorgeous coffee table books and pretty barware, lamps and furniture to create the nest of your dreams back at home.

The Works of Daniel A. Moore

Experience Hoover’s History

I have collected Daniel A. Moore’s art for several decades. Daniel’s studio, New Life Art, which is located on Lorna Ridge Drive, houses many of his original works.

I periodically have the opportunity to drive a city bus for a tour group led by Hoover Historical Society’s Jim Langley. We spend a day driving through the city and visiting many of our historical areas, properties and businesses. We learn about Hoover’s founding, original businesses and homesteads, and my favorite named bygone establishment, “The Linger Longer Lodge.”

La Fiesta

I first visited Danny and New Life as a small child, and I’ve been stopping by to enjoy his work and his company ever since.

MY HOOVER

Hoover’s diverse food scene is reflective of the many cultures and nationalities that exist in our city. Our family enjoys them all, but our “go to” is La Fiesta. Tucked away in the Hoover Court just off Hwy 31 in the Green Valley area, La Fiesta has been owned and operated by the Perez family for 35 years. The Perez family are some of Hoover’s best corporate and community citizens, having raised their families and maintained their successful business here.

Hoover Historical Society

The Hoover Metro Kiwanis Club was my first introduction to community service in the Hoover area. I have been an active member since 1999. Founded in 1978, our club exists to support children’s causes in and around Hoover. We meet at IHOP on Hwy 150 on Friday mornings at 7 a.m.

Hoover Metro Kiwanis Club

Experiencing Hoover on Foot Hoover’s residential housing growth came at a time largely prior to sidewalks. Since that time, the city has made great strides to retrofit many of our residential streets with a more pedestrian friendly atmosphere. Being an avid marathoner, I believe the best way to see and truly experience a city is on foot.
