Every year, high school seniors face their own set of challenges as they prepare to enter the new world post graduation. Following senior prom, spring sports, their final awards day and their final high school exams, they get set to walk across a stage in front of their peers, teachers and family after four grueling years of hard work, making it all worth it in that moment. The class of 2020, however, faces a more difficult challenge. Possibly one of the most historic senior classes in recent history, they won’t get the same opportunities. Due to the spread of COVID-19, the school year was suspended on a daunting Friday, March 13, before eventually being canceled two weeks later. The majority of this year’s seniors missed their final prom, missed spring break, missed out on their final sports season and perhaps saddest of all, they missed out on creating special memories with their best friends before many take separate paths in their next venture. But, that is exactly what has this year’s senior class possibly more prepared than many before them in their school’s history. This year’s class of seniors will be remembered, not for how the year ended, but how they handled the ending. A group that has shown tremendous leadership for one another and their school’s future seniors. It’s a year of their life that didn’t end the way they hoped it would, but it’s a year that added as much character as any for how they handled this unforeseen challenge that most of us are struggling to cope with. For that, we say congratulations class of 2020. Throughout this special graduation magazine we honor each of you for your accomplishments in the classroom and in life, and look forward to your next step as you continue to inspire us all.

Ferguson used to excelling in the face of adversity For Christian Ferguson, time spent at Briarwood Christian School allowed him to create unforgettable memories every day. “The teachers and coaches at Briarwood provided a supportive environment where I could strive to achieve in all fields,” Ferguson said. “Playing in the football and baseball state championships provided me with experiences that I will never forget. I also loved every second spent with all of my friends, whether that was the football, baseball or math team.” Ferguson was named valedictorian for the class of 2020; he was voted by his the Student Government Association all teammates to be a captain on the 2020 four years of high school, and was voted football and baseball teams; he served in the chaplain of the school by his class4

sadness, the adversity will have a negative impact on your life, but when you fight through it, you can use adversity as a tool to help you achieve your goals.” Since senior year was cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Ferguson said not getting to spend his last couple of months at school has been difficult. “We had an incredibly talented baseball team, and we were looking for revenge after losing in the state championship last year,” Ferguson said. “But I have gotten to spend some great time with my family before I leave for college. It is also encouraging to see how the Briarwood staff is supporting all of the seniors. School staff members visited all 143 seniors at
their homes, and delivered graduation party packs.” Ferguson said he will take the memory of the atmosphere during a home Briarwood football game with him. “The fans, the band, the student section, the coaches and my teammates all banded together to support the eleven guys on the field, it was incredible,” he said. Ferguson loves all things science and math, because he can see how they relate to one another and have practical real world applications. If he had to pick a favorite subject, he would choose chemistry. Ferguson plans to attend the Universi-
ty of Alabama on one of the school’s seven Academic Elite Scholarships. He will be majoring in chemical engineering and minoring in social innovation and leadership. He has been selected to take part in the University Fellows Experience, which is a service-based fellowship that serves impoverished communities across the state. “I can’t wait to spend the next four years pushing myself to become a better person for the Tuscaloosa community, and the state of Alabama,” Ferguson said. Ferguson is the son of Juli and Scott Ferguson. He is the brother of Sara and Anna Grace Ferguson.

Calera High School 197 graduates 100 Calera Eagle Drive • Calera, AL 35040 Eagles • 865 students • 40th best school for college readiness in Alabama
To the Class of 2020, The decision to close school in March eliminated the traditional end-of-year senior class experiences and opportunities designed to be the pinnacle of a Calera High School education. We are saddened that we won’t have the opportunity to share these moments with you, but we take comfort in our memories of the experiences we shared together during the 2019-2020 school year.
You have faced adversity, learned to do “hard things” and grown strong, resilient and innovative. We are confident that through this growth you are destined to accomplish great things. You encourage us, inspire us and challenge us. Ultimately, you give us hope. We love you Class of 2020! You will always be Eagles! Congratulations.

Chelsea High School
Dear Class of 2020, I first want to congratulate you on your accomplishment of successfully completing high school. Often lost in the excitement of such an event is the effort it took to achieve this great honor. It truly represents the 13year culmination of all the hard work, sacrifice, struggles, joy, triumphs, and building of relationships that one experiences during their elementary, middle, and high school years. As you reflect back on all of these times, it is my sincere hope that you view them positively, and hold your accomplishment in the high regard it deserves. Unfortunately, this school year did not end as any of us would have hoped. Many of the enjoyable activities that are typical for seniors during this time of year were sadly taken away as a result of the COVID-19 virus. The memories associated with such things will now be replaced with e-learning, social distancing,
10
and living through a national crisis. However, while you reflect on what you may have missed out on, I encourage you to also think of what you can gain from this event, which will be forged in your response to the adversity you experienced. I believe things do not always happen for the best, but each of us have the ability to make the best of what happens. There are some things that are important for all of us to consider. For instance, I hope that we all can value our lives, health, family, and friends much more in the future. I believe that even small things we perhaps used to take for granted will henceforth hold increased significance, as we consider how fragile our world truly is. While many of these suggestions could be taken as universal considerations, as graduates, you now have a deeper responsibility. You are all getting ready to enter the world as young adults, and with that, the world awaits your response. Each of you
has something to contribute in the short and long term. Every day, you can work to be a better person by exhibiting traits of strong character, such as kindness, charity, trustworthiness, and other moral sensibilities that allow you to consistently uplift those around you. In the long term, you can decide how to use your gifts (everyone has them!) to leave your mark on the world. You, and subsequently your decisions, matter a great deal. You represent the future of our country, and as the graduating class rising out of this great crisis, you can help lead a better way for all of us. I have faith that you will accept this challenge, and persevere with the idea that we will see a better tomorrow facilitated through your contributions. I wish you the greatest of success, and will be praying for you all as you pursue your future endeavors. Godspeed!

GRADUATION 2020
Nail focuses on doing right instead of expectations Chelsea High School senior Katie Nail said some of her favorite memories at school included leading Impact Day groups, doing community service, watching the Class Clash her freshman year and getting to see her friends and teachers. During her time at Chelsea, Nail was president of both Spanish Club and Spanish National Honor Society (at separate times), a peer helper and a candidate for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Students of the Year” competition to raise money for Blood Cancer Awareness and treatment. “Each of these individual accomplishments led to an even greater one—personal growth and self-acceptance,” Nail said. A favorite subject for the Chelsea senior was AP Spanish because she felt like she learned the most both culturally and academically. “It was a unique class and my teacher was invested in each of her students,” Nail said. While her senior year was cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Nail said she has had more free time to read, write, paint, exercise, and many other things. “My main goal is to stay mentally and physically active while preparing for college,” Nail said. A piece of advice Nail has received is to focus on doing what is right rather than what others think or expect of her. Nail said she will carry her time from Peer Helper Camp with her throughout her life. “I built friendships, and also the lessons we learned about life and working to help others,” Nail said. Nail said people make experiences and she will miss her friends at Chelsea more than anything. Nail plans to study cognitive science at Yale this fall. She is the daughter of Pam and Clint Nail.

I’ve created bonds with other students and teachers that I see lasting for years after graduation. I am going to miss walking through the halls and seeing my family. It will be the biggest change of my life.” Bailey has loved participating in art shows since being in middle school. “Up until my senior year, I had a few pieces place in the school show each year,” Bailey said. “In my junior year I 12

school, making it my favorite subject. I love to write, and English class allowed me to explore new styles of writing and dive into new ideas without hesitation.” When senior year was cut short, Bailey said she really struggled. “Losing the remainder of my senior year was very upsetting,” Bailey said. “The people I have grown up with are suddenly gone, and I am wondering what final experiences I may have lost due to all of this. I am, however, very grateful that I was able to attend my senior prom. I know many kids didn’t, and it was the last time I was with all my classmates. I am very happy that I had that time with them before graduation.” Bailey said she will never forget all the mornings she spent with other students before their first class started. “Some mornings we would meet up early and huddle up in a car to blare music,” Bailey said. “Other times we would rush into our homeroom and jump onto homework together. Birthdays were the best, as I got to spend time before school decorating lockers and cars for a fun surprise for my friends. Those moments were so quiet and seemed ordinary, but created genuine memories that bring me comfort and happiness.” Bailey said her math teacher Nancy Ingram’s iconic words of wisdom in AP calculus to “get on the struggle bus,” will also be a memory she will take with her after high school. “She warns all of her students about the potential difficulty of the class,” Bailey said. “She’s honest about what challenges you’ll face as a student, and always does her best to guide you through the challenge and help you learn all that you can.” Bailey said she plans to attend the University of Montevallo in the fall. She is still undecided on her major, but is leaning toward art or education. Bailey is the granddaughter of Djuana and Jeff Myers. GRADUATION 2020

Dear Coosa Valley Academy’s Class of 2020, On the day Governor Ivey closed our schools, Flag. Realizing how lucky Yes, I have given them everything they needed I was to watch the juniors and seniors enjoy the to complete this year. A sweet spirit, prayer guidprom in their beautiful clothes, which was an unance to love one another, to know everyone has forgettable experience. Seeing little Charlotte strengths and weaknesses and confidence to stand walking with her walker down the high school up for what is right in a safe Christian Academic Enhall and watching the students make sure that she has plenty of room to complete her PT exercises. The faces of vironment. To our CVA Parents, thank you for allowing me to watch your chilstudents during weekly Chapel hoping that the Christian message hits home and maybe changed a life and saved a soul. Monitoring dren grow in every way and allowing me to have them in my life. the security cameras to make sure all the students are safe, walking to check the doors and seeing the teachers teach with passion the Love you always, subject that they really love. Each day we start our day off with a Christian devotion, a prayer and standing for the Pledge of Allegiance to our beautiful American Coosa Valley Academy Headmaster

I want to commend you for your ability to adapt to changing circumstances. When the year began, this senior class almost doubled in size when you welcomed so many seniors from Kingwood. You bonded over the senior retreat and homecoming activities. You joined hands and hearts to support Backpack Buddies. You worked with elementary students to create a reading buddy program and encourage our youngest students. Now you are enduring one of the most historic moments in our nation’s history. In the face of a pandemic you have managed to maintain your studies at Cornerstone while also doing all the things necessary to get into the colleges and universities where you will continue your education. I marvel at how well you have all handled these unusual circumstances. You have demonstrated faith, kindness, and thoughtfulness through all of the challenges. Whatever your futures hold, know this: God has allowed these events into your lives because He knows what lies ahead. Whatever skills you are gaining, whatever lessons you are learning in these hard times, you will use them in your lives. God is protecting you now because He is preparing you for a future that is in His hands. Never forget Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” You have shown so much pride in your school, so much love for your classmates, and so much respect for your teachers! None of us will ever forget 2019-2020. Your leadership and example have made a difference. Your legacy will remain for many years to come.

Helena’s Tilton preparing for the next chapter
Many of Elijah Tilton’s favorite memories from his time at Helena High School involve the school’s theatre department. “I have been very involved both onstage and backstage since my freshman year,” Tilton said. “Our most recent production, ‘Footloose,’ was my favorite, even though it did get cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic. I was cast in the role of Willard Hewitt, who was probably my favorite character to portray. I also was the technical director and scene designer for the production. The atmosphere in the theater department is quirky and accepting and it was a place where I always felt at home.” During his time at Helena High School, Tilton was a member of the National Honor Society; president of Honor Society; member of the National the National English Honor Society; member of the International Thespian Science Honor Society; member of the

Helena High School of calculus because many of the problems are like puzzles and he likes to solve them. “Calculus requires you to use many parts of math that you have learned through the years,” Tilton said. “Some problems may be complex, but the harder they are, the bigger the payoff when you get the right answer.” Due to Tilton’s senior year being cut short thanks to the COVID-19 outbreak, he describes the ending to his senior year as “anticlimactic.” “We were all looking forward to milestone events that occur during the peak of senior year like banquets, senior
prom, awards day, and graduation,” Tilton said. “Events were canceled and the graduation announcement came in an email. Twelve years of school ended in an instant, rather than over two or three months like we expected. Once it was confirmed that we would not be returning, I decided to keep myself busy by working for a landscaper. The work keeps me outside and active, while I prepare for the next chapter.” Tilton said he will take the memory of his last day of high school on March 12 with him as moves forward to the next chapter of his life. “It was the opening night of ‘Foot-
Dear Class of 2020, We are a special class—we always have been. Most of us were born around the time that the world was rocked by the major tragedy of 9/11 in 2001, and our country was changing rapidly when we were infants. And now, as we approach one of the largest milestones in our lives so far, our world is experiencing a pandemic, as if our lives are bookmarked with worldwide events. It breaks my heart to think about the things we are missing out on: senior prom, college decision day, awards ceremonies, a normal graduation, spring sports and senior nights, senior picnic, and even just signing one another’s yearbooks; however, if any group of students could handle these losses, it has always been us. Since we started kindergarten in 2007, we have been different from any other group. We’ve seen unparalleled success in sports, produced the most honor graduates in the history of the school, led incredible theater productions, signed multiple athletes to competitive colleges, marched the band to high honors both on the stage and the field, seen individual seniors achieve some of the highest academic honors possible, and initiated traditions at Helena that will continue for years to come. It’s safe to say that a group as special as the Class of 2020 only comes around once every century, right? So, though we are missing out on the end of our senior year, we should not forget the twelve years of memories we have to cherish. Remember those field days in elementary school, when winning tug of war was the most highly respected accomplishment? And when career day was the most exciting day of the year? Then we moved up to the intermediate school together in third grade and spent our next three years focused on who would win four square, jackpot,
loose,’ and we were all excited,” Tilton said. “The show really came together for that first performance and we all left that night feeling proud of ourselves. Over the next few days, we learned that that was our last day of school for the year. This is not how any of us thought senior year would end at Helena, but for myself and my fellow seniors in the cast, crew, and orchestra, we were fortunate to end our year on a high note.” Tilton’s future plans are to attend Auburn University where he will study mechanical engineering. Tilton is the son of Dana and Jesse Tilton.
and Beyblades competitions at recess. In 2013, we tackled the first year of middle school together. The idea of having multiple classes and a locker rocked our worlds in sixth grade, but three short years later we were the kings and queens of that school. Then, in August of 2016, we became high schoolers and began making some of the sweetest memories together. I will always fondly remember working together each year during homecoming week to win the spirit stick, coming together at every football game to support our classmates on the field, and cheering each other on in each of our accomplishments as we found our passions and gifts. Nothing will ever replace that special feeling of singing the alma mater with our arms around one another, and I am incredibly thankful for that. We should all be proud to be a part of this group that is leaving such a unique mark on Helena. Going forward, some of us are headed to college, some taking a gap year, pursuing trade school, entering the workforce, or honoring our country by joining one of the armed forces, but going our separate ways will never take away our memories and our bond, just like this pandemic has not been able to bring us down. Even more now than ever, I am confident that this class will find incredible success in our future. We are living through a time that will put us in the history books, and we are learning so much that will prepare us for our next steps in life- we will continue to make history. So Class of 2020, let’s cherish every memory we’ve made together, nothing can take that away from us. The day we can all be together again will be the best memory yet. Go Huskies always!

GRADUATION 2020
Indian Springs School
Dear Class of 2020:
we are all going through this together. I know you will survive this. I know you will learn important lessons from this experience. I know you will thrive in the coming years. But I do have one concern, and that is that the final weeks of your senior year may, in your minds, overshadow what you accomplished and contributed to the life and work of Indian Springs School in the time leading up to the onset of the virus. There is an old saying in the independent school world that as the year goes for the senior class, so it goes for the whole school. That is because the leadership of the senior class sets the tone for the entire school. This has been a great year for Indian Springs School, and the leadership of the Class of 2020 has everything to do with that success. Hard work, intellectual curiosity, strong moral leadership, commitment to the School and the School’s values, healthy ambition—these and others are what you have provided the Indian Springs School community this year. And we have all benefitted from those qualities. All of us here are proud of you. We salute you, we thank you, and we hope that as you reflect on your experience at Indian Springs School this year, you will remember all the good that you have contributed to the School. With respect and gratitude,
You are no doubt familiar with the story of the religious woman who felt pressed by several urgencies in her life and prayed the following: “Lord, give me patience, please. And give it to me right now.” This woman, like most of us perhaps, had long known the value of patience but had always thought it was a skill or mindset she could develop later. And then she found herself needing patience, immediately. You may have made the same prayer in the last few weeks. The spread of COVID-19 has been rapid and virulent, but what it has wrought in your lives has been a dramatic slowdown, a radically different way of learning, and some significant losses. Patience has been required. So too resilience. Creativity, as you have adjusted to a different way of learning and have found new ways of maintaining contact with your friends and extended family, which is essential to the human soul. Those new skills will hold you in good stead in the future, for this will not be the only time in your life when they will be required of you. What you are experiencing now, what the world is experiencing now, is historic. In her column in the April 18 weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal, columnist Peggy Noonan wrote this line: “History doesn’t get any bigger than this.” Recognizing this context for what your life is like now may provide scarce solace, but there is truth to the sometimes glibly offered statement that Interim Head of School

Small town, school make big impact on Heuton Montevallo High School senior Abigail Heuton said the small community of her town has had a great impact on her life. “I have made close friends and have loved being at a small school where it feels like a second home,” Heuton said. “I didn’t know moving to a small town in Alabama would have such a positive impact on my life.” During her time at Montevallo, Heuton was elected as the junior mayor/president of the Montevallo Junior City Council, which she describes as one of her biggest accomplishments. She also represented MHS at Alabama Girls State and at Youth Leadership Shelby County. Heuton said her English classes, especially AP literature, were some she really enjoyed. “I had the opportunity to engage in discussions with my teacher and classmates,” Heuton said. “We always had fun debating and discussing books and papers. Without certain teachers it definitely wouldn’t have made the class
as enjoyable.” While Heuton admits she was disappointed and sad about missing many big moments during her senior year, she has tried to have a positive outlook on the whole experience.
“I have been able to stay in contact with people more because of zoom and social media and have also taken this time to slow down and rest,” Heuton said. “Hopefully, after all this is all over I will be able to get together with everyone and say our goodbyes in person.” Heuton said one memory she will take away with her from high school is one involving her closest friends. “After school one day me and two of my closest friends decided to hang out in the parking lot listening to music and teaching each other dance moves,” Heuton said. “While it sounds very cheesy, it was a lot of fun and I’m sure if anyone saw us they were very confused as to what we were doing.” Heuton is still in the process of making her final decisions between going to Belmont University, Auburn or the option of taking a gap year after graduation. Heuton is the daughter of Paul and Mary Ellen Heuton and sister to Sarah.

Oak Mountain High School 326 graduates 5476 Caldwell Mill Road • Birmingham, AL 35242 Eagles • 1,572 students • The No. 9 high school in the state and No. 1 in Shelby County
Dear Class of 2020, Well, it feels strange to say it, but this is it. It’s been a wild ride, Class of 2020, and neither of us would have dreamed of sharing it with anyone else. We’ve been through a lot over the years, good and bad alike. We were the only class to have an extra math class instead of advisory back in sixth grade—remember that? And the last class to be taught by Mrs. Golliver, with her Jolly Ranchers and literary projectiles and that inflatable mountain. We were the first class to have SOAR60 all four years, and we were the class of 9 National Merit Semifinalists. Most recently, we were the first class to send a basketball team to the Final Four. Now we’re the class that has to graduate in the midst of all this madness, the class that had the end of our senior year and everything that comes with it—prom, banquets, award ceremonies, probably a trip or two, graduation itself, all of it—snatched away from us, as if we were marathon runners pulled out of the race just as the finish line came into sight. But, as awful and unfair as that is—we did it, you guys. We made it. We’re done. Our class’s journey has been a roller coaster, full of the highest highs and lowest lows, but, like all things in life, we’ve made it special by facing it together. Each of us have had our own struggles and our own triumphs, but it is exactly our vibrant individuality that makes this class great. We are truly greater than the sum of our parts, each a distinct, colorful tile in the mosaic of our relationships
and experiences at OMHS. To the athletes who brought us together in school spirit and gave us something to rally around, thank you. To the choir and theater kids that made our talent shows and plays and musicals so special, thank you. To the band that kept us entertained at every football game, pep rally, and Homecoming Parade, thank you. To the Student Government officers that represented our interests and made sure everyone’s voice was heard, thank you. And to every single one of you, thank you for the years of friendship and encouragement you’ve shared. Thank you for the blood, sweat, and tears you’ve poured into Oak Mountain since day one. Thank you for everything. We’re going to miss you so much. Finally, we want to thank all the teachers whose classrooms we’ve been lucky enough to call home over the years. You have supported, reassured, and cheered on so many students, helping us in ways you don’t even know, and none of us would be where we are now without you. We know we speak for everyone when we say thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for everything you do. And thank you from the two of us especially, for teaching us not only to learn, but to love learning. From your valedictorians,

Studying the past to be prepared for the future
Oak Mountain High School senior Evie Bell spent a lot of her time in high school running with her friends and teammates at cross country and track practices and meets. “Some of my favorite memories also include watching my dad coach the football team on Friday nights, early morning study crams with my friends before school, the trips down to the state outdoor track meet with the team, and staring at my friends with confusion when we both don’t understand what is going on in class,” Bell said. During her time in high school, Bell said some of her proudest accomplishments consisted of making some of the best friends she could ask for. “The hope is that I was able to leave a positive impact, and being able to take with me the life advice that I have learned over my four years at Oak Mountain,” she said. Bell said her favorite subject is U.S. and World history because there is a lot to learn from past situations and decisions. “What we learn can help us with how we handle the future,” Bell said. Pelham High School 211 graduates 2500 Panther Circle • Pelham, AL 35124 Panthers • 945 students • Holds a graduation rate of 93 percent
Pelham High School Class of 2020, When spring arrives, I always begin to think about the theme of my graduation speech. I look for inspiration in every book, sermon, social media post, and anything else that I read and hear. It becomes a bit of an obsession and is really quite stressful to consider what to say to over two hundred young people embarking on their adult lives. Little did I know two months ago when I began jotting down ideas for the commencement speech that nothing I wrote down would apply after all that we, and especially you, went through these last few weeks. My task to address you now became exponentially more difficult because what do you say to students who missed out on so many experiences and had their senior year cut off so abruptly? I say to you, seniors, to move forward purposefully and not dwell on the short hand you were dealt. Don’t let being a member of the Class of 2020 define you as a victim of circumstance, but rather let this experience shape you into a better person. Life is full of hardships and unfortunately you learned that lesson early. However, not
so long ago we all marveled at the uniqueness of graduating in 2020; to begin real life at the start of a new decade and new opportunities. Those qualities still exist and now you are even better equipped to take on what is ahead because you are strengthened by adversity, more appreciative of the good times, and possess resilience and perseverance taught not only by the pandemic experience, but also by the teachers, coaches, and staff of Pelham High. So, seniors, congratulations to all of you. Each of you has every right to be proud of all that you have learned and accomplished. I wish you all the best wherever life takes you, Class of 2020. We are proud of you, and we miss you, but let me remind you - you have a responsibility to us, a responsibility that goes beyond graduation—YOU ARE A PELHAM PANTHER and because of your hard work, the hard work of your teachers and coaches, and the ultimate meaning behind “The Pelham Way,” you can be extremely proud of yourselves and celebrate your accomplishments! Congratulations!

Long knows to only worry about what she can control Pelham High School senior Erin Long recalls winning the state championship with her volleyball team her sophomore year as one of her favorite moments from high school. “Our team that year had great leaders and chemistry on and off the court, which made for an awesome season that was so much fun,” Long said. “Another one of my favorite memories from Pelham would have to be Friday night lights at Ned Bearden Stadium or cheering on the basketball team in Jo Flo’s Jungle. Just supporting the school and being able to hang out with my friends made for some great memories.” Long was part of two state championship teams, one volleyball and one track, and also helped the school claim seven state runner-up trophies for track. I was a state champion in javelin and was the Birmingham Female Athlete of the Year in 2018. Long was also named the class of 2020 valedictorian.

Long said her favorite subject is science, specifically anatomy. “I found the material very interesting and had an awesome teacher who made the class enjoyable,” Long said. Long describes having part of her senior cut short due to the COVID-19 virus as broken hearted.
“When they first made the announcement that schools would not open back up, thinking about all of the fun experiences we’d be missing out on such as senior field day, luncheon and prom,” Long said. A piece of advice Long has appreciated came from her volleyball coach Perry Robinson, who always told her to control what she can control. “He understood that I was always my own worst critic and tended to stress too often,” Long said. “I have been able to use this advice in all aspects of my life, and it really came into play my senior year, a time when I had to make a lot of important decisions.” Long plans to attend Samford University on a track and field scholarship. She has plans to possibly pursue something in the medical field. Long is the daughter of Brian and Leslie Long. She is the sister of John-Michael and Emorie Long.

Dear Class of Covid-19: Embrace your Lemons Pelham Panthers, I understand that we feel as if we’ve been stripped of a rite of passage: the final quarter of senior year. It was supposed to be the most memorable experiences of our entire high school career. People attempt to comfort us with words. “Oh but your class will go down in history” and “Just think about how you’ll never forget your senior year”. Words that I used to think were insensitive, because we would trade being remembered for a chance to make our own memories. Senior luncheon, senior field day, senior prank, senior awards, prom, for some it was one final sport season, and most importantly a chance to walk across the stage at graduation. But in this dispiriting time, the Class of 2020 has found a way to prevail. So, I will now gladly accept the title of the Class that “will go down in history”, but not for the expected reasons. Not because our senior year was cut short by a global crisis. Not because we might have missed out on the exciting experiences that senior year entails. But because life handed our Class, what some might call, a fairly rotten batch of lemons, and we still managed to make lemonade. Because we found a way to come together and enjoy the time we had left, whether with drive by celebrations or zoom calls with classmates. Because we are a Class that learned to appreciate what we have, and to not take time with people we love for granted. Because we will be a class defined by our resiliency. Defined by the dedicated teachers who adapted to a new way of doing their job. Our Class will go down in history because we found a way to graduate in the midst of a pandemic. We found new hobbies and spent much needed quality time with our family (we may or may not be reaching a limit at this point but that’s beside the point). We found a way to make our last weeks of senior year enjoyable in considerably unconventional ways, despite those rotten lemons that we were dealt. Make the best of every situation you find yourself in, because you can create your own happiness. That is my encouragement to you, Class of 2020, embrace your lemons. And remember, once a Pelham Panther, always a Panther!
“
We found a way to come together and enjoy the time we had left, whether with drive by celebrations or zoom calls with classmates.
”
Go Ham Forever,

Shelby County High School
‘Attitude about life is an active choice that we make’ Shelby County High School senior Ashley Wilson loved the time surrounding homecoming week at her school. “I loved the competitive, but all-funand-games atmosphere during that time each year,” Wilson said. “The time that I spent outside of school hours decorating for the floats and pep rallies all while hanging out with my friends remains precious to me.” Another favorite memory for Wilson was during the time speaker Timothy Alexander visited the school and told the students about the difficulties and obstacles that he faces in his life. “He chooses to remain optimistic through his journey,” Wilson said. “I believe that our attitude about life is an active choice that we make, and Mr. Alexander was an inspiration to all of us that day, and for me, continues to be.” Wilson earned the salutatorian position for her graduating class, she was a member of the National Honor Society, and she received acceptance into the Early Assurance Program at McWhorter School of Pharmacy. Wilson said she enjoys both calculus and chemistry because she likes science, but chemistry intrigues her the most. “The concepts of chemistry are much more hands-on and fascinating to learn about,” Wilson said. “I aspire to become a pharmacist one day, so chemistry is definitely going to make up a large portion of my career.”

GRADUATION 2020
Wilson said one of the toughest parts of her senior year ending sooner than anticipated due to the Covid-19 outbreak, was having her last day of high school and not even realizing it was the last day. “Many of our typical senior traditions were postponed and everyone is unsure about what is to come next,” Wilson said. “However, I am remaining positive about the situation in hopes that something beneficial comes out of our circumstances. On the bright side, having a lot of extra time at home with minimal assigned school work has allowed me to focus on studying and reviewing for my AP exams very extensively. I am also practicing a new hobby for myself of playing the guitar.”
A favorite memory for Wilson she will carry with her after leaving SCHS involved her 10th grade math teacher, Mrs. Wheeler. “She was such a kind hearted individual who was taken from us all too early and unexpectedly,” Wilson said. “Though I spent only a few months as one of her many students, I quickly realized that she was the epiphany of such a sweet soul who would do absolutely anything to help one of her students at any given moment. The time I spent in her presence is a time that I will definitely tell my children about.” Wilson said other teachers and administrators provided her with an abundance of opportunities to reach her full potential. “The amount of advice received from these individuals is immeasurable,” Wilson said. “I have had multiple teachers who have taught me for a total of three or four years straight, like Dr. (Jennifer) Moore and Mr. (Mike) Kantaris, so these teachers have had a remarkable impact on who I have become today.” After graduating, Wilson said she plans to attend Samford University and earn her doctorate of pharmacy degree at McWhorter School of Pharmacy where she will hopefully manage her own pharmacy one day. Wilson is the daughter of Crystal and Toby Wilson. She is the sister of Austin Wilson.

Seniors ,
Meanwhile, people like myself and your teachers who really want to fix it, or at the very least help you through it, are trying our best to wrap our heads around it as well. There is so much unknown to deal with, and that puts everyone on edge. Long story short, this is a mess. It hurts me for you all. You are in my constant thoughts and prayers. You are not silly for being sad, disappointed, worried, or even grieving. Be sad, be disappointed, grieve, but try not to worry. You guys are smart. You are part of what will likely be our nation’s most educated generation. I see it in you every day. You will get through this, and in many ways, you’ll be better for it. All of this causes anxiety. It’s hard, but you will do this! I am looking forward to the ways that you will all impress us with the grace and resiliency you have faced this challenge. You are forever the Class of 2020! It looks different for you, but you wear it well! Go Jags!
While it may seem dramatic or small in light of the current crisis, I want you to know that you are seen. Students at your place in life are asked to straddle the line between the adult and the minor world on a daily basis. We ask you tiny little questions like, “What do you want to do with the rest of your life? How do you plan to pay $XX,000/yr. for your education? Are you sure this is the next right step for accomplishing your long-term goal? Is this place you’ve never been a good fit for you? Do you want to go to college? Do you need to go to college to accomplish your goals? Do you understand the wording in your admission/financial aid offer?—etc...” On top of all of this, we tell you to “grow up” and stop being so self-absorbed all the while we organize events that contribute to you being self-absorbed. Well, now your time has finally come and we all saw it coming. What we didn’t see coming was a global pandemic. This public health crisis has rocked what little bit of normal With love and pride, expectations you have been clinging to for most of your life. This is supposed to be your year! Now, one more thing seems to be spinning out of control and threatening to steal your year from you. College and Career Specialist

Jones a champion on the track and in the classroom Thompson High School student Jace Jones describes his senior year like no other. “I miss my friends every day, but I realize it is what is best at this moment,” Jones said. “Since I did not have to do anymore school work, I have been doing a lot of running and work around the house. I also play some Xbox every now and then so I can interact with my friends.” Jones said some of his favorite moments of high school included seeing the football team win the state championship. “Just seeing how it brought the community of Alabaster together as a whole was incredible,” Jones said. “Our senior class’ seventh grade year, the team went 0-10 and just seeing how far the team came was special. My other favorite memory was the Indoor 2020 track and field state championship. Our team finished runner-up, which was the highest placement in school history. I also finished the meet with two individual state championships, which were the mile and two-mile. I also placed runner-up in the 800-meter race. This meet I saw the entire culture of Thompson track change. We went from hoping to win to expecting it. That whole weekend was something I will remember forever.” Jones is a four-year letterman in both

track and cross country; he was a 2 time All-State in cross country; five-time AllState in track; two-time state champion (mile and two mile); state record holder for the indoor two mile; for the majority of the 2020 indoor season he was ranked number one in the nation for the 1600-meter run; and he was given a scholarship to run at the University of Alabama in cross country and track. Academically, Jones was part of the school’s National Honor Society, math team. Mu Alpha Theta, Spanish Honors Society and Leo Club. He was also selected to be a valedictorian.
Jones said his favorite subject in school is math, because he likes the fact there is always a precise answer. “Whereas in other subjects the answers are not as precise and to the point,” Jones said. Jones said one memory he will take with him from his time at Thompson includes standing on the podium knowing he was a state champion. “Also, that the track team was going to finally get a map. Just seeing how far the team had come was truly special,” Jones said. One thing Jones said he will miss is getting to see his coaches and teachers every day. “I will also miss being with my friends every day and just knowing that I probably won’t see the majority of the senior class again is extremely upsetting,” Jones said. “A class of 544 graduates, and knowing I won’t get to say bye to everyone one last time is super upsetting. My years at Thompson High School have been the best of my life by far. Once you are a Warrior, you’ll always be a warrior.” Jones plans to attend the University of Alabama to hopefully major in some sort of business and to run cross country and track. Jones is the son of Jeff and Jennifer Nichols.

Vincent High School
To the class of 2020, Vincent Middle High School has always been my home. The teachers and administration are my loved ones and my fellow classmates are my siblings. Freshman year, my life changed and I moved away from Vincent. I knew that I had to make every effort to get back to the home I loved. Once I was home, I knew everything I did had to be for the betterment of my school. That is where our principal, Dr. Michele Edwards, comes in. Dr. Edwards went out of her way to guide me on my path, even if that meant me going to her office unannounced...which most of my high school experience was, unannounced. I was loved when I stepped onto campus and most knew me as the “voice” of our school. Every morning at 7:45 sharp, my voice rang throughout every classroom and hallway to bring the daily announcements to the Yellow Jacket Family. This was the highlight of my days until my junior year, when I was selected as the Drum Major of the Vincent Yellow Jacket Marching Band. Also, I served as Drum Major during my senior year. I did not know it then, but my band and band director, Landon Manning, changed my perspective. They brought me happiness, frustration, tears, and after our final performance of the 2019 season,
sadness. Throughout these years, many things taught me that through hard work and dedication anything is possible. One of the many things that I love about Vincent is the COMMUNITY our teachers build around us. The saying “It Takes A Village” becomes a reality when stepping onto campus at VMHS. The amount of overwhelming love and support from teachers and faculty have made this my village. High School can be a whirlwind of emotions and experiences, but they all end up falling into place right where they need to be. My days at Vincent Middle High School have shaped me into the person I am; and the person that will show up on a college campus prepared for what is next. Unity at Vincent has taught me the true meaning of trust, loyalty, and friendship. The friends I have made throughout the years are the people that I want my future kids to know. This has been more than a high school to me; it has become a home, one that will last forever in my heart. I’m thankful for the opportunity to have made such wonderful memories. As for the class of 2020... you will indeed go down in history.

GRADUATION 2020
Vincent High School
VMHS Class of 2020, Under the unexpected circumstances that is COVID-19, we can officially call ourselves graduates. Although not the conclusion we intended, we still made it to the end of these four short years of high school. Let us remember the pleasant times, the tough times and our last times we have spent together. You should be proud of your accomplishments and your determination to see past graduation in order to achieve your dreams. As we go our separate ways, feel no sorrow for we are going to do and bring better things to the world and ourselves. For we are the class of change, excellence and resilience! Nothing will stop us from succeeding. We have stood together and will stand together stronger through this time. The best of luck to you, our Classmates, our friends and our family,
Toni Wright and Tion Wright President and Vice President VHS Student Government Association
Dear Class of 2020,
employees. Finally, a large number of you have chosen to serve our country by enlisting in one of the branches of the US Armed Forces. For the dedication, honor, grit, and determination you have shown to achieve these many accomplishments, we are PROUD! As your senior year draws to a close, take some time for personal reflection. Reflect upon your personal achievements, your future goals, your future life path, and your future career path. Remember your years at VMHS and embrace your many successes. Cherish the good memories and let go of the ones that are painful. Each one of you has a future that is bright and filled with endless possibilities. Go now and achieve your dreams, remember what defines you as a person, and continue to push yourself toward success. Each of you possess all that is necessary for greatness. For this, we couldn’t be more PROUD! Always remember how much we love and respect each of you. You are family to each of us, and we will always be here for each of you. We are all part of the Jacket family, and “WE ARE VINCENT STRONG”!
The administration, faculty and staff want to let each of you know how PROUD we are of the fine young men and women you have become throughout your academic journey at VMHS. We are excited about your many accomplishments, achievements and honors. Upon much reflection, there are many characteristics that make your class so unique and very special. Your class has withstood much hardship and loss. You came into this world during uncertain times surrounding the 911 terrorist attacks. You have endured the loss of a classmate. You have lost many of the celebrations and rites-of-passage that most seniors enjoy during their final year of high school. Yet, you have done so with great compassion, love for each other, dignity, and resolve. For this, we are extremely PROUD! Your class has also achieved greatness in many areas. Academically and in the career tech fields, 100% of your class has met one of the requirements to be deemed College and Career Ready. A great many of you have accepted scholarship With Love, offers from a variety of post-secondary institutions worth thousands of dollars. Many of you participated in the inaugural Ready to Work class - which has been described as the model of excellence for our county- resulting in twenty-two job offers from established companies seeking dedicated professional VMHS Faculty & Staff
“
Go now and achieve your dreams, remember what defines you as a person, and continue to push yourself toward success. Each of you possess all that is necessary for greatness.

To the class of 2020, It is easy to look at the accomplishments of Westminster’s class of 2020 in an attempt to gain an understanding of who they are. Athletic championships began mounting from the time they first competed on the varsity level; standardized test scores soared as they matured into upper classmen; applause echoed as they took to stage in performance. Yet merely looking to these outward indicators only yields a partial understanding of this class as a whole. To truly see the gifting of this group of 32 students, one must walk the hallways with them and engage in their school experience. At Westminster we value the art of conversation, as words possess the power to comfort, encourage, and heal. It is here that the character of the class of 2020 60

truly shines. Through their conversation we see the deep care and concern they have for one another. The members of this class do not simply talk, they listen. We see the celebration of each other’s accomplishments, the grieving of each other’s losses, and the bearing of each other’s burdens. And through all of it we are able to witness a deep love for one another that flows out of their classroom to all aspects of our school. They have carried the torch of leadership well. They have served others. They have fostered community. They have led by example. They have made things fun. And through it all, Westminster School is a better place because of the class of 2020.
