THE COVER
II was no more than 6, when my posse of American Girl dolls lined the corridor in my grandfather’s home, decked out in toilet paper streamers. Dear Robert, my cousin, best man, officiant, florist and wedding planner, wore every hat in the industry, including the badge of security.
I quickly chose an old Easter dress and a somewhat white pillowslip for my gown and veil before fashioning together a bouquet of dandelions. Suddenly, I was behind that closed door–the one that would open into “my forever” with Prince Charming. Balling on a budget, I improvised “The Wedding March,” humming, “ba-da, dadum,” right before processing down the hallway.
This was it. This was my moment. Then, my father so rudely interrupted the happiest moment of my life by tripping over some guests. My life? In shambles. My wedding? The laughing stock of the century. My security guard? Apparently on break.
My poor father unsuccessfully attempted to console his elementary bridezilla, promising anything from ice cream to even providing the music for my real wedding one day. Curiously, I blinked my eyes and nearly 20 years had passed.
This time, however, I stood gazing at the ornately carved French doors just seconds from giving way into the congregation. The only problem was my father wasn’t there. I couldn’t even tell him how much I missed him.
Just as beads of sweat started to drizzle down my furrowed brow, I felt a soft embrace on my shoulder–Robert, like the gentleman he was, offered his affections, telling me my dad loved me and would be here in spirit.
Truthfully, the events that followed are a bit of a merry blur. Robert walked me down the aisle, giving me away in place of my father. We all laughed and danced, and at the reception, I looked over at the band and realized Robert was right.
Every single musician performing was a longtime friend of my father. They all took time out of their schedules, and some drove for hours just to play at my wedding. Because of them, my father fulfilled his promise to me from all those years ago. They even had a guitar adorned with my father’s face on display.
It was at this moment I learned that only in fairytales do weddings go as planned. However, weddings were never supposed to be about perfection, were they? In this issue, you all will read about 12 Homewood weddings. Each couple’s story is proof that love is enough, and the best weddings are the ones that hold space for those we hold dear.

Local artist Heather Davis believes the most beautiful paintings are the ones left open to interpretation.
BY ANNA GRACE MOORE
AA native of Cape Town, South Africa, Heather Davis says she owes much of her artistic authenticity to the Motherland. Her family immigrated to South Africa from Scotland after her grandfather, one of the first violinists in the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, visited the town on a world tour.
He fell in love with the city and later moved his entire family to Cape Town, soon saturating Heather’s childhood with creativity. Growing up in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, Heather says she garnered a healthy appreciation for life’s blessings.
She grew up dancing, playing piano–anything her parents thought would help her cherish the beauty in art. Her father, a prolific painter, would often take her on expeditions to the game reserve near their home, so he could photograph animals in their natural habitats.
Heather never will forget her father waiting till the last minute to move out of a ginormous male elephant’s path–just so he could take the “perfect shot.”
“There is nothing like an African sunset,” Heather says, smiling. “It’s a very beautiful thing. There’s colors that are very extreme, so I guess that comes out in my artwork.”
The smell of turpentine, oil paints–those create such a sense of nostalgia for her, especially as she recalls watching her father capture light on his canvases. He could always paint such raw emotion into his landscapes, often without saying a word at all.
Heather lived in South Africa for the first 17 years of her life before moving to England when she was a senior in high school. There, she worked on Savile Row in London–a street known for its bespoke ateliers.
Her fascination for the femininity in fabric–and its projection of inward feelings–held her attention captive. Yet, she did not stay in England for long as home came calling, and she moved back to South Africa to attend a technical school where she met her first husband.
In 1992, she welcomed her first-born, Caleb, into the world before making the cross-cultural trek to the United States with her family in ‘93. Not long after did Heather decide to go back to school and study fashion illustration and design at Purdue University.
Then a single mother of three, Heather says juggling school, work and motherhood was quite difficult, but she took a page out of her father’s book and tried to find the beauty in what seemed to be a much more mundane lifestyle. Just as her hope started to dwindle, she met her now husband,
Jonathan Davis, at a church service in West Lafayette, Indiana.
As fate would have it, Heather actually met Jonathan’s father nearly 20 years prior as he visited Cape Town on a mission trip with his church. The Davises tied the knot and moved to Homewood in 2002.
Fast forward to 2020, and like so many others, Heather found herself as an empty nester with time on her hands for the first time in a long time during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I was here for a year, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t want to go work for someone again for 60-plus hours, you know, I want to do my own thing,’” she says. “I just wanted to do art. I mean, that’s always been my passion.”
Having grown up in an artistic family, Heather says it surprises many that she never jumpstarted her career as a painter until the pandemic.
“My first piece, I remember putting paint on the canvas, moving it around, letting it dry,” she says, later adding, “watching something appear from behind those colors.”
Heather starts each painting by selecting hues from the color wheel, shading in the darkest tones first, letting them dry and tinting the piece with lighter colors as her work progresses. Sometimes, she’ll see shapes revealed in her work, allowing her to draw into fruition what her heart wants to convey.
Heather has since expanded her repertoire to include painting on canvas bags and pillows. Although it takes her twoto-three weeks to complete a painting, Heather has created more than 200 paintings since she started investing in her passions in 2020.
Each piece is unique, usually adorned with various textures of homemade paper, cracking or hardening paste, heavy gel and perhaps, a touch of gold.
“A lot of my art is colorful, so it’s going to brighten up any room,” she says. “A lot of my faces don’t actually have features, not all of them. It leaves it up to interpretation.”
Inspired by world-renowned artists Claude Monet and Gustav Klimt, Heather says some of the most awe-inspiring paintings are more abstract and enable the beholder to project his own

emotions onto the work, allowing him to humanize the subject. Artwork depicting more realistically portrayed people, ironically, does not always bridge a connection between the artist and the viewer since there is less to interpret, to ponder, to understand.
One of her most profound paintings is called, “Can You Hear Me?” This abstract piece mimics a spring, batik-like landscape, layering hues of chartreuse, cerulean and rust in melancholic cells reeling in from the outward corners.
Just as the dark wages in from the Northwest and
Southeast corners, the light in the middle fights for visibility, pushing back against the noise of the void. Heather welcomes each person to form his own interpretation of her work because there is beauty to be found in everything–even the things we at first do not understand.
“My art really reflects my experiences in life–where I’ve lived, places I’ve been, places I want to go,” she says. “Sometimes, it’s even reflected in my fears, my inside fears, and my passion.”
Reflecting on her artistry, Heather says some of the hardest times in her life yielded the most beautiful blessings.
“My art often serves as a mirror to my inner world–my emotions–or even a longing to be somewhere because I have a great longing to go back to Africa,” she says. “That’s my home.”
A cornucopia of culture, Africa, Heather says, is not just an aesthetically alluring place, but it is also a place rich in gratitude for family–life’s most beautiful blessing. She hopes her artwork inspires that same transcendent love that builds the foundation for all things beautiful.

Kate Etheredge has been a librarian for more than 20 years. The main reason she went into librarianship was her desire to make sure people left with the book that was right for them. Romance isn’t just found in the paperback section. The deepening connection between two people is vital to our lives and crosses into all genres. Below are five books that celebrate this love.
This novel is the original, second-chance love story with the perfect love letter. Due to her family’s misfortune, spinster Anne Eliot is thrown back into company with the man her family and friends convinced her to give up eight years ago as they felt him unworthy. Now Captain Wentworth is rich and looking for a bride, and he has choices, but Anne does, too.

Bitty & Beau’s Coffee is employing individuals with special needs, ushering in an era of societal change.
BY ANNA GRACE MOORE
“We recognized early on that the world needed spaces that celebrated people with disabilities and decided to build a business that could make that vision a reality.”
Amy Wright, Co-Founder of Bitty & Beau’s Coffee
TThe power of a smile is its transformative joy, radiating from one person to the next. No such joy is more evident than in Bitty & Beau’s Coffee–the birthplace for a growing cultural revolution.
Arguably one of the Southeast’s most inclusive cities, Homewood is known for its unwavering support of the special needs community. Between The Exceptional Foundation, The Bell Center for Early Intervention Programs and more, it’s no surprise that Bitty & Beau’s founders Ben and Amy Wright set their sights on such a community when expanding their business.
Dubbed a human rights movement disguised as a coffee shop franchise, Bitty & Beau’s employs individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The business was first founded in 2016 out of Wilmington, North Carolina, when Amy experienced a revelation–she and Ben were called to empower people with disabilities.
“I just had this vision in the shower one day nine years ago that I wanted to create a place for our community to spend time with people with disabilities,” Amy says. “My own two children who have Down syndrome, Bitty and Beau, I wanted them to grow up in a community that they felt valued in. It just seemed like a coffee shop was the perfect environment to bring people together.”
Since its inception, Bitty & Beau’s has expanded to 20 different locations in 12 states as well as Washington D.C. It now employs more than 450 individuals, making the franchise one of the largest employers of people with special needs in the United States.
On Nov. 11, 2023, Bitty & Beau’s opened its doors for the first time at 1625 Oxmoor Road in Homewood. Hundreds of patrons attended the grand opening with lines wrapped around the

building, down the sidewalk.
As employees cut the ribbon, marking the start of the first-ever work day in Homewood, it was also many of their own first days working as well. There was hardly a dry eye in the house as onlookers clapped and cheered when employees excitedly rushed into the coffee shop, ready to take orders from behind the counter.
“The founding of Bitty & Beau’s was rooted in a desire to reframe the conversation around disability,” Amy says, later adding, “every day, we witness how Bitty & Beau’s is making an impact—not just in the lives of our employees, but also in the hearts and minds of our customers. One of the most rewarding parts of this journey has been watching individuals gain confidence, independence and pride in their work.”
Reed Johnson, who works as a cashier, says people with special needs add so much value to the community. He enjoys many activities such as hunting, fishing and playing guitar, but oftentimes, people unfairly stereotype him into a box because of how they view differently abled individuals.
“I hope customers see Bitty & Beau’s in a positive way because our staff brings them light and joy with their positive attitudes,” he says.
Reed loves taking customers’ orders and challenges himself to put a smile on every customer’s face. He
In the little moments and major milestones of childhood, we are here for our patients and their families – helping, healing, teaching and discovering.
believes that if a cup of Joe can change someone’s day, then an added smile has the potential to change their perception of those different from themselves.
Jacob Fiveash, who has autism and serves as a Bitty & Beau’s barista, has to agree. He says autism is his super power, and if others could view the world how he does, then they may lead happier lives.
“One of my favorite things about working at Bitty & Beau’s is talking with customers,” Jacob says. “It really helped me come out of my shell.”
Too often are people with disabilities isolated in their communities. Bitty & Beau’s’ creating job opportunities for such a marginalized community has jumpstarted an era of change–one rooted in inclusivity and inherent value in each person’s heart.
This human rights movement really is more than coffee–it’s proving just how beneficial the special needs community is for the world. One of the business’ founding principles is if one has breath in his lungs, then he also has a purpose to fulfill in his community.
“As parents, Ben and I have learned that every child has unique gifts to share with the world,” Amy says. “While challenges are part of the journey, so is the incredible joy of watching our kids thrive in ways that constantly amaze us. Our advice to other parents is to focus on those strengths and never underestimate what your child is capable of achieving.”
Every person possesses the ability to be the catalyst for social change. All it takes to make a difference is the bravery to say, “yes,” to the calling on one’s life.
Thanks to the Wright family, this “change” has caught on like wildfire and has set forth a new reality for hundreds of deserving individuals across the
nation. What a powerful legacy that is to leave behind.
Bitty & Beau’s Coffee is located at 1625 Oxmoor Road in Homewood. It is open every day from 6:30 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information on employment, hours and operation, orders and more, visit bittyandbeauscoffee.com/location/ birmingham/.
Carol Gregg
Co-Founder of Pastry Art Bake Shoppe
The brainchild of Dennis and Carol Gregg, Pastry Art Bake Shoppe has been serving Homewood patrons since April 2006. The husband-and-wife duo took a leap of faith upon entering retirement age and opened their bakery, relying on Carol’s baking talent and Dennis’ accounting skills. Their “Baby Bites,” which are flavorful, bite-sized cakes, have been their best-seller from opening day and now are a staple in Homewood’s dessert scene. The Greggs have since capitalized on their hardearned success, opening a second location in Trussville in October 2020. Here, Carol details the founding of their business and venture into the wedding industry.
What is the founding story behind Pastry Art Bake Shoppe?
In 2006, with self-taught culinary skills and an artist’s background, I, with my husband Dennis, and the encouragement of family and friends, began a 19-year baking odyssey. We opened our first, 900-squarefoot store in Homewood and named it Pastry Art Bake Shoppe. Our mission statement was simple and has not changed after almost 20 years. We offer fresh, greattasting, made-from-scratch baked goods at a fair price in a warm, friendly atmosphere.
What is y’all’s favorite wedding cake that y’all have ever created?
All the wedding cakes we make are so individual, and I love working on each one.
I think one of my favorites was a five-tiered bride’s cake with alternating tiers of French vanilla and coconut cream with an intricate monogram. Regardless of the design, it is definitely worth the time spent
when you know that you have made the couple’s vision a reality.
What wedding cake trends do you see “staying for a while,” and which do you think will become outdated in the future?
A simple and elegant design is timeless and will always be around. In the past several years, the trend for more retro-style designs with ruffles and swags have been popular. Fondant-covered cakes are beautiful but not requested as much recently. Sports-themed groom’s cakes are always popular and are requested often. Baby Bites are a large part of our wedding preparations. Popular displays can consist of anything from a tiered display with flowers for the bride to a design with sports logos or initials for the groom.
To whom do you attribute your inspiration for creating beautiful works of pastry arts?
Sylvia Weinstock was the designer that I
began following early on and had the pleasure of meeting at an event in Birmingham, Alabama, a few years ago. Several designers in the United Kingdom are favorites and showcase a number of different styles.
Out of all of Pastry Art Bake Shoppe’s menu items or cake flavors, which should a newcomer order first?
It’s hard to choose one flavor over another, but the red velvet has been our best-selling flavor over all. Regardless, quality and freshness are our foremost priorities, and we have never wavered from fresh-baked, madefrom-scratch baked goods. You can’t go wrong with ordering any of our menu items.
Pastry Art Bake Shoppe is located at 1917 29th Avenue South in Homewood. It is open Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. For more information or to inquire about orders, visit pastryartcakes.com.

Saying, “I do?”
Bromberg’s Diamond Buyer Brian Hood offers his guidance on choosing the right rings for you.
By Brian Hood & Anna Grace Moore
Discussing getting engaged? Fabulous! Engagement rings have long been a symbol of love and unity, announcing to all your commitment for the long haul. Be sure to follow these steps as you and your beloved navigate this exciting, new journey:
Determine a comfortable budget before you start shopping. This will help narrow down options.
Learn about different types of stones, cuts, settings and band materials. Understanding the 4Cs of diamonds (cut, clarity, color and carat weight) can help you make informed decisions.
Consider different metal options, such as white gold, yellow gold, rose gold or platinum. Each metal has its own look and durability, so choose one that suits your lifestyle.
John and Amanda Bullen chose Bromberg’s for their forever rings. Amanda’s engagement ring is a solitaire oval diamond set in an 18-karat yellow gold mounting with pavé diamonds. As per her family’s tradition, Amanda wore her engagement ring on her right hand and switched it over to her left hand after the wedding ceremony.
Once you nail down your budget and have a general idea of your dream ring, start thinking about which style—timeless or trendy—you envision it to be. Here are a few things to consider:
Often associated with class and elegance, these style rings usually consist of the following:
SOLITAIRE RINGS: These feature a single diamond or gemstone set on a simple band. They are classic and will never go out of style.
TIFFANY SETTING: A variation of the solitaire, this setting lifts the diamond to maximize sparkle. This type setting usually has a thinner band to maximize the
presentation of the diamond.
ROUND BRILLIANT CUT: Known for its exceptional sparkle, this cut is a perennial favorite.
THREE-STONE RINGS: Symbolizing the past, present and future, these rings offer a classic look with sentimental meaning.
If your dream ring’s price is a little too steep, Brian recommends these alternatives, in order to prioritize quality:
MINIMALIST SETTINGS: Lower cost on the setting will maximize the budget for the center stone. The setting can always be enhanced or changed at a later date such as for a future anniversary gift.
HIGHER COLOR: At times to fit a customer’s budget, diamond experts will sacrifice color to hit a certain budget.
By focusing on Exceptional-cut grades, you can alter the appearance of color as much as two-color grades.
FOCUS ON MILLIMETER SIZE, NOT JUST CARAT WEIGHT:
This is especially important with fancy-shaped diamonds. A 1.8-carat stone can sometimes appear as large as a 2-carat stone but at a significantly lower cost. When shopping, pay close attention to the millimeter size to ensure you’re getting the best value. Choosing a diamond based solely on carat weight doesn’t always guarantee the size or look for which you’re aiming.
On the other hand, “on trend” engagement ring styles tend to reflect contemporary tastes and may vary significantly based on current fashion. Some examples of trendy designs include:
COLORED GEMSTONES: Sapphires, emeralds and other colored stones are often chosen over traditional diamonds for a unique twist.
HALO SETTINGS: A ring where a central stone is surrounded by smaller accent stones for added brilliance. Halo rings can help maximize appearance when working on a budget.
STACKABLE RINGS: Multiple bands worn together can create a modern, personalized look.
GEOMETRIC SHAPES: Rings featuring unique shapes and designs, such as hexagons or asymmetrical styles, appeal to those seeking something different.

Three different bridal parties, three different styles. Take a look at how these brides utilized seasonal color palettes to elevate their wedding day themes.
Kineshia Smith opted for a vivid color palette rich in hues of maroon, rouge, pink and ivory.
Styled by David’s Bridal, the bridal party wore an all-black, one-shoulder, stretch satin dress by Galina Signature. The offset in color allowed for the bride to shine, and the pops of color in the florals and decor tied the theme together well for such beautiful nuptials.

To complement her chic, minimalist gown, Kelsey Shepherd selected a more maximalist bridesmaid dress for her bridal party. The bridesmaids wore a floral, bow-shoulder, satin maxi dress with an asymmetrical tiered skirt in “Cottage Rose Larkspur,” compliments of Bella Bridesmaids. These lively, whimsical gowns are not only gorgeous, but they also helped set the tone for a perfect summer wedding.
Bridesmaid Dresses: Bella Bridesmaids
Ja’Tavia Pettway wore an emerald green, mermaid-style wedding gown, reminiscent of the Great Gatsby era. For her bridesmaids, she chose a deep saffron, off-the-shoulder jersey dress from Gabriel’s Bridal & Formal that was opposite to hers on the color wheel. These hues, paired with the groomsmen’s ivory-colored suits, made for an alluring, bohemian theme.

What “wedding day” items should a bride never go without on her big day?
We always make sure to have toupee tape in our wedding day kit! It is 20 times stronger than generic clothing tape and can be used for everything.
What is the number-one mistake you see brides make on their wedding day?
The main mistake we see brides make on their wedding day is forgetting to be truly present in the moment. Do not get wrapped up in trends and making sure everything is “social media ready!” We always make sure that the day has plenty of cushion time in order for the couple to bask in the day.
What are some of the best ways to calm nerves/ alleviate anxiety before a bride walks down the aisle?
If a bride is feeling anxious before the procession, we always give her a few minutes alone to take a few deep breaths. Refocusing on why we are here is key, and those nerves always turn back into excitement.
To make the most of one’s wedding day, what do you advise a bride to prioritize?
We advise her to do a first look! Getting all of the photos done ahead of the ceremony allows the couple to spend more time with their family and friends. Time, specifically not feeling rushed, is our number-one priority.
What wedding trends do you think will become timeless, and which do you think will “date” a wedding, looking back?
In regards to wedding planning, I believe that short engagements will eventually date a wedding due to the couple being unable to truly focus on the highly curated elements that mean the most to them. For this same reason, longer engagements will always be classic and lead to timeless designs.

What “wedding day” items should a bride never go without on her big day?
We love when we see a wedding day kit that’s usually brought by the wedding planner that includes needed items such as bobby pins, medicines, feminine products, safety pins, stain sticks, white chalk, towelettes, tissues and other “emergency” use items.
What is the number-one mistake you see brides make on their wedding day?
Not planning enough time for hair and makeup in the morning comes to mind. It’s the first part of the day, and as the morning progresses, things can fall behind. We love when our clients remember to place themselves (and whoever is helping them in their dress) in the middle of the bunch to ensure they are ready when they need to start getting dressed.
What are some of the best ways to calm nerves/ alleviate anxiety before a bride walks down the aisle?
We really believe having an hour of down time before the ceremony helps alleviate anxiety. You are able to relax with your friends and family, knowing we’ve captured all the important moments up until this time of the day. We find many couples are so thankful to rest and re-energize without worrying about cameras or moments. It’s truly a “living in the moment” time period.
To make the most of one’s wedding day, what do you advise a bride to prioritize?
We believe most couples should look at prioritizing a photographer and a wedding planner. These are two vendors that truly ensure your entire day will flow seamlessly without stress. In our experience, our clients who select a planner that knows their other priorities (having a stress-free day, a flawless ceremony, a fun-filled reception, spending intentional time with friends and family) helps create a timeline that can be executed seamlessly.
What wedding trends do you think will become timeless, and which do you think will “date” a wedding, looking back?
We think photographs that are overly edited are going to be what “dates” the look of a wedding. The photos, to us, usually appear too far from what you see with your eyes–too warm, too dark, too bright or too many changes to the deepness and saturation of the colors. We believe a timeless look will represent the day as it naturally was. On the other hand, couples having a first look is a “trend” that we feel has come to light strongly within the past decade, and we don’t see it going anywhere. We don’t see a single emotional difference with our couples who do a first look versus our couples who choose to see each other at the aisle.

What “wedding day” items should a bride never go without on her big day?
Water is crucial! One’s wedding day is such a long day, and she’ll be on her feet a lot. Staying hydrated is key to feeling one’s best.
What is the number-one mistake you see brides make on their wedding day?
Not living in the moment and not soaking it all in is
the number-one mistake. So many brides feel so much pressure to have a perfect day because they have invested so much into such a monumental day in their lives. However, the best thing to do is trust those they’ve hired for their wedding day, and focus on marrying their spouse.
What are some of the best ways to calm nerves/alleviate anxiety before a bride walks down the aisle?
This really starts before the wedding day with who she surrounds herself with the morning of and the day of the wedding. We advise her to make sure that her bridal party is made up of the people she feels the most relaxed, at ease and comfortable around. Being around her absolute closest friends will keep the day feeling celebratory and stress-free.
To make the most of one’s wedding day, what do you advise a bride to prioritize?
Every bride needs a good wedding planner. It could even be just a coordinator if a full-service planner isn’t in the budget. Every bride needs a point person for their wedding day, so she can relax and celebrate!
What wedding trends do you think will become timeless, and which do you think will “date” a wedding, looking back?
Anything that is very trendy is going to date a wedding: disco balls, full-on Babies Breath. While they are so fun, in 20 years, one will definitely be able to date the wedding from those trends. To me, a timeless wedding can be anything that reflects the couples’ personalities, styles and love story. We encourage our couples to think about those things when making decisions, so their wedding will always be timeless to them.

We met in undergrad at Samford University. It was during our very first class freshman year, and we were seated next to each other and became fast friends. However, we didn’t start dating until our junior year in 2016.
We were visiting Napa Valley to celebrate Robert finishing law school. He proposed at our favorite winery, HALL Wines. I was in complete shock since this was a trip to celebrate him, yet he turned it into the sweetest weekend getting to celebrate us.
We had several marriage counseling sessions with our officiant who is my sister-in-law’s father-in-law. He made it super light-hearted and fun, which made us even more excited to finally tie the knot.
It was surreal, getting married on the same campus where we met and getting to share the day with all of our closest friends and family–such a full-circle moment. We also hired Airbrush Events out of Atlanta to come and live airbrush custom hats for the guests. They were amazing!

We met through mutual friends in November 2021. I was about to graduate from Auburn University, when Chris came into town for the Iron Bowl. My cousin was engaged to one of Chris’ childhood friends at the time. We met and hit it off instantly and went on our first official date two weeks later.
What I thought was just a typical date night turned into my dream proposal, when Chris wanted to stop by Sibyl Temple in Vestavia Hills to “look at the Christmas tree” on our way to dinner. He proposed with some of our closest friends hiding in the bushes, capturing the moment. However, the surprises weren’t over! Chris drove me to our engagement party afterwards, where we celebrated with all of our friends and family.
We began our preparation for marriage by following the book, “The Meaning of Marriage,” by Timothy Keller. We would read a few chapters each week together and meet with our wedding officiant, Skot Montgomery, at A2 Church for counseling. It was such a special time of growing closer to each other while also growing in our relationships with God.
Getting to spend our wedding day together as husband and wife may sound cliche, but we made it a priority to spend as much time together that day as possible. It truly was the best night of our lives, and I wish we could relive it over and over.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met randomly at a restaurant, but Will knew who I was because he played football at Samford University with my big brother, Jake.
Will was working for one of my best friend’s grandmother, Juju, at King Cotton Fabrics during the summer to save up enough money for a ring. He and I were on the way to take pictures for our podcast (or so I thought), and he said he needed to stop on the way to “pick up a check from Juju’s house.” I heard about how beautiful her backyard was, so I asked if I could run back there to see it while he grabbed the check. There was a pile of rose petals and a photographer and that’s where it happened–I was so oblivious that I saw the rose petals and said, “Look, Will! Someone must have just gotten engaged!”
PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE
We did premarital counseling with Steve Blair at Church of the Highlands, which was incredible. We had a quick engagement, so we spent a lot of time praying for each other, spending time with couples we look up to and asking God how He wanted to use our wedding and marriage for His glory.
The moment I walked down the aisle was beyond special. I have never been so overwhelmed by the love of God and the look on Will’s face. It was unlike anything I have ever experienced! It felt like Will, the Lord and I were the only people in the room, and I still get full body chills thinking about it.

Lee and I met like many other couples–through a mutual friend! We both happened to be downtown one evening in December with different groups of friends. I was with my roommate, and we ran into a friend from college, who was with a couple of other guys, one of those being Lee. After catching up with the friend, he invited us to grab a drink with their group, and we spent a few hours hanging out.
Throughout our relationship, Lee had taken me to a beautiful overlook over the city of Birmingham to have important conversations. This was the location where he asked me to be his girlfriend and told me he loved me, so it carried sentimental value for us. After a dinner date one night, he asked me if I wanted to visit the spot while waiting for some friends to meet us for drinks at a nearby bar. Being completely oblivious, I said yes, and we drove up to the spot. I quickly figured out what was happening when he asked me to get out of the car in the rain! At the spot was a table with flowers and pictures from our relationship. After some sweet words, he got down on one knee and popped the question!
Before getting engaged, we started counseling with a pastor and his wife from Lee’s church, Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church, which would be where we eventually decided to attend church as a couple.
After our first look, we were able to have a quiet moment by ourselves, where we sat on the steps of Reid Chapel and read letters we had written to one another. This was a calming moment for both of us, as we were able to take a deep breath and take a moment to thank the Lord for all he had done to bring us to our wedding day.

The story of how Reid and I met is a testament to both the Lord’s faithfulness and sense of humor. Throughout college, I would joke with my friends and say I didn’t know how I would ever meet a man when I was usually at home on the couch in my pajamas on Saturday nights. Ironically, that’s exactly where I was when Reid came into my life. He sent me a message on Instagram, we started chatting, we went on our first date to church and Taco Mama the next day, and the rest is history.
After a year and a half of longdistance dating, Reid brought me up to the lookout atop English Village–a place special to us where we shared our first kiss and frequently came back to throughout our relationship. He took my hands, prayed over our future marriage, got down on a knee and asked me to marry him! We celebrated afterwards at his family farm with all of our closest friends and family.
We are so thankful for the rich wisdom we received through our marriage counseling sessions with our pastor at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church.
The standout moment from our wedding day was that no one knew about it until after the fact. We took a few minutes between our ceremony and reception to walk to Taco Mama in Edgewood and share a drink at the table where we sat on our first date. In that moment, everything came full-circle, and it was such a special few minutes to soak in where we started and now where we are.

We met in Sunday School at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. Our grandmothers were right–go to church and meet your spouse! We were both new in Birmingham and were looking for a church to get plugged into. He joined Dawson, I joined a week or two later. We became friends and started dating a few months later. We went to Waffle House after a friend’s birthday party, and the rest is history.
He proposed in front of Dawson–where we met, where he proposed and where we would eventually get married. He told me we were going to eat dinner at Gianmarco’s with friends–there is a running joke about me having never been to Gianmarco’s despite really wanting to go. Because the restaurant’s parking lot is so small, we were going to meet at Dawson and carpool. Andrew proposed at the bottom of the steps and surprised me with an engagement party hosted at my favorite bookstore–Little Professor.
We attended Dawson’s Together for Life Class–it’s a 12-week course hosted at Dawson that teaches engaged and newly married couples really pragmatic advice for what’s to come in marriage. We also did premarital counseling with our pastor, Dr. David Eldridge, who later married us.
I still get emotional when I think about our ceremony, walking up to the front of the church and realizing we were truly surrounded by all of our favorite people at one time (we had a decently large bridal party). Also, at the reception, we paid homage to my hometown of Mobile, Alabama, and threw out Mardi Gras beads and moon pies.

We met on a dating app. After talking on the phone, our first date was at Gianmarco’s, and we finished the evening at the Crest Road overlook, laughing and talking. We both knew from the first date that what we were starting was going to be something special.
Ty’s plans for the proposal changed after the ring was delayed. He got a call from Diamond’s Direct that he could pick it up the day before Thanksgiving. From there, he changed his plan and proposed at my family’s home in Decatur, Alabama, after Thanksgiving dinner with my family. He took me out to the firepit, and fireworks began going off. He then shakily told me he loved me and asked me to marry him.
We decided on a shorter engagement, and my childhood pastor guided us through premarital counseling.
Our favorite moments of the day were when we said a prayer together before the ceremony without seeing each other and saying our vows together. We also loved the details of pictures from our families’ weddings. The Dress Doctor took my grandmother’s dress and created a table runner out of the lace to use at our wedding.

London and I are both from Tennessee, and our hometowns are about an hour apart. We also have many mutual friends, but it took us both moving to Birmingham to finally cross paths. I was in grad school at Samford University for speech pathology, and London moved to Birmingham to complete the Briarwood Fellows Program. Our first date was on a Monday night at Monday Night Brewing, and we stayed so late that we were the last two people in the brewery.
London proposed in downtown Chattanooga on May 6, 2023. Chattanooga is a very special city to us because London is from Chattanooga, and we have shared many special memories there. London had just finished his first year of medical school, and his family was planning to have a “making it through the first year of med school party” that evening to celebrate. That morning, London and I went to brunch downtown at one of our favorite restaurants, and then he asked me to go walk over by the river bluff. He led me to a gorgeous archway, where he then proposed!
We completed premarital counseling with our pastor, where we read “The 5 Love Languages” by Gary Chapman. We also read “The Meaning of Marriage” by Timothy Keller. We really enjoyed discussing our newfound knowledge with our pastor. These texts opened up fruitful and thought-provoking discussion on date night dinners.
I would give anything to relive walking down the aisle and feeling like the world had stopped spinning. I remember lining up for the processional and hearing our violinists begin playing. When the doors opened, I saw nothing else around me except London at the end of the aisle.

Chad’s Perspective–To paraphrase a line from “How I Met Your Mother,” you need two things for a relationship to work: Chemistry and timing, and timing is the “tough” part. From the very beginning, Tatum and I have had both in spades. Our story began over Memorial Day weekend in 2020. At the time, I was still living in Nashville and working with Cason, who had just started dating a close friend of Tatum. Cason shared Tatum’s Instagram page with me, and in a true Ted Mosby moment, I debated not only about what to say, but also when to say it. I decided to message her something half generic, half corny, right away to get the conversation going, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.
Fast forward to 2023, and I decided to propose at Tatum’s parents’ lake house on Smith Lake. I asked her bosses to schedule a mandatory, late afternoon meeting with her at the office. She was not pleased, but this set in motion the big surprise and gave our families time to get to the lake house ahead of her. Tatum was so surprised and happy!
Tatum’s Perspective–We prepared for marriage by dating for almost four years before getting married. We also attended premarital counseling at Mountain Brook Community Church.
Chad and I spent the time before our wedding day writing our own vows. Chad surprised me by purchasing personalized, engraved vow books. It took me much longer to decide what to say in front of my husband and our closest friends. For Chad, he was swift and knew precisely how to transcribe his vows to me. Our written vows were uniquely different but quite complementary.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
Spencer and I were high school sweethearts. We had known each other since middle school and began dating the summer before our senior year of high school.
Spencer and I are huge Disney fans. Spencer is in the Air Force and was stationed in Monterey, California, in early 2023. During spring break of my second year of Samford University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program, my family and I planned a visit to go see him. We decided that we would meet him in Anaheim, California, at Disneyland for the beginning of our visit. Little did I know, he had our engagement perfectly planned. The morning of our first day there, he proposed in front of the castle. He had arranged to have a photographer there to capture the moments. It was the perfect day!
PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE
We have both grown up with great examples of marriage in our families, and we have tried to emulate those examples.
While there were many great moments throughout the day, one particular memory that stands out is the car ride from the ceremony to the reception venue. It was the first quiet moment of the day, and we were able to let the joy of the ceremony and events prior sink in. We were able to enjoy that brief time together as husband and wife.

We were introduced by our mutual friends, Maddie and Robert Sorrel. I attended Auburn University with them, and they were married five months before us! Both grooms were in each other’s weddings.
Ben proposed the Monday of the week before Thanksgiving. He told me we were having a holiday dinner with his sales team at The Grand Bohemian Hotel Mountain Brook and getting drinks beforehand. He drove us to a friend’s home on Crest Road, which has a beautiful view of the city. He walked me to their gazebo and popped the question while down on one knee! Both of our families were there along with our sweet dog, Ice. We did end up at The Grand Bohemian but actually to celebrate our engagement instead.
We spent time with our pastor who married us, Dr. Jim Cooley. This was one of our favorite times of wedding planning.
Ben and I both loved our first look. I know there are lots of divided opinions on a first look, but I couldn’t imagine losing that special moment. Being able to really enjoy that moment privately and have the day slow down a bit was so important. We both love our friends and family dearly and really wanted to be present during the reception as well. This took a lot of the pressure off of us later in the day.

The first time we met was at Jinsei Sushi, where he was my waiter. I knew from the second we locked eyes that something in my heart tugged towards him. The rest is history!
On our first date, Devin took me to Cayo Coco Rum Bar & Restaurant on Morris Avenue. There’s a cathedral behind it, and bells were ringing at the time. Devin joked with me that he wanted to marry me. One year and five months later, he took me for brunch, and afterwards, we were walking, taking in the melodious charm of those same cathedral bells. He stopped and told me, “Baby, the first time I asked, it was a joke, but this time, I’m being serious.” Not only did he propose at the site of our first date, but he also called the cathedral to see what time the bells rang, so he could pull off a sweet surprise.
My mom helped me every step of the way. I couldn’t have done any of it without her. Emotionally and spiritually, we relied on God. Our Christian faith held us firmly together through the stressful times of wedding planning and kept our heads from sinking in stress.
Two things I will treasure about my wedding day are having Baldna Dabkeh, a Middle Eastern traditional dancing group, perform the Zafi, and the memory of my dad doing my hair. My husband, who is American, wanted our wedding to feel as Jordanian as possible, which touched my heart. Watching him dance, chant and smile throughout their performances was unforgettable. My dad did two hair looks for me: An up-do before the ceremony and cutting my bangs and styling my hair down for the reception. Having that time with him was so special to me, and I’ll always cherish these moments.
When planning your wedding journey, the destinations you choose play a pivotal role in creating lifelong memories. From dreamy engagements to bachelorette parties, intimate destination weddings and picture-perfect honeymoons, every step is an opportunity for adventure and romance. Here’s a curated guide to some of the world’s most enchanting venues and locales to make every moment of your wedding experience unforgettable.
BY CHRISTIANA ROUSSEL
Hotel Esencia, Riviera Maya, Mexico hotelesencia.com
Nestled along the pristine shores of the Riviera Maya, Hotel Esencia offers a mix of lush, tropical gardens and breathtaking beachfront views. Emily West, luxury travel advisor (emilywesttravel.com) shares, “Esencia still feels like a private home oasis — exclusive and tailored to perfection. Many of the items throughout the resort’s common areas are the original art and decor from when Esencia was a private residence for a dutchess of the Ferrari family.”
Propose under the stars with a private dinner on the beach or amidst the estate’s lush greenery for an intimate moment.
Les Roches Rouges, Côte d’Azur, France beaumier.com/en/properties/les-roches-rougeshotel/
Set along the French Riviera, this boutique hotel is a slice of Mediterranean paradise. Imagine popping the question on a terrace overlooking the Azure Sea, followed by champagne at sunset.
The Madrona, Healdsburg, California themadronahotel.com
This meticulously restored Victorian mansion in Sonoma County combines wine country charm with sophisticated luxury. The gardens provide an idyllic setting for a vineyard-side proposal.
Casa Rosada, Sayulita, Mexico casarosadasayulita.com
For a laid-back yet vibrant escape, Casa Rosada is perfect. With its boho-chic vibes, colorful streets and surf-town atmosphere, Sayulita is ideal for bonding over surf lessons, beach parties and margaritas. Emily adds, “It feels like a Barbie dream house meets Moroccan flair, and you can sleep up to 14. The attention to detail with 24/7 staff makes this unparalleled for morning private yoga, sailing or themed dinner parties.”
The Horse Shoe Farm, Hendersonville, North Carolina thehorseshoefarm.com
Owned and operated by the Turchin family, The Horse Shoe Farm can best be described as Southern Hospitality with a side of woo-woo. Brides and their bridesmaids can spend an afternoon in the Stable Spa getting facials and having tarot cards read. Then they can take the steps to the top of the silo for a moment of reflection (bring your Sharpie to add a great quote to the walls), or indulge in meditation or other wellness sessions.
Vermejo Reserve, New Mexico, USA
tedturnerreserves.com/vermejo/
For the adventurous group, this sprawling reserve offers activities like fly fishing, hiking and wildlife safaris. It’s a nature-lover’s paradise, with plenty of opportunities for camaraderie around a roaring fire. Emily notes, “Personally, I think one of the best parts of the resort is that it’s all-inclusive, including meals, activities, alcohol and transportation around the property. In terms of value, it exceeds expectations while remaining approachable and giving guys opportunities for quality time and activities together.”
The Ansonborough, Charleston, South Carolina theansonborough.com
For guys’ groups looking to enjoy a bit of everything on their “mancation,” The Ansonborough is an ideal home base. Originally built in 1901 as a stationer’s warehouse in the city’s oldest neighborhood, the hotel is just a short stroll to the best restaurants, activities, historic sites and nightlife Charleston has to offer. Make sure to check out the hidden poker room as well as the Rooftop Garden overlooking the harbor.
Borgo San Felice, Tuscany, Italy borgosanfelice.com
A medieval village-turned-luxury retreat, Borgo San Felice is the epitome of Tuscan romance. Exchange vows amidst vineyards and olive groves, then feast on farm-to-table Italian cuisine under the stars.
Palmetto Bluff, Bluffton, South Carolina palmettobluff.com/stay/
This sprawling, lowcountry estate offers a mix of Southern charm and upscale elegance. Choose from a waterside chapel or an oak-draped lawn

Doughnuts & Buns
While there are so many things I can choose from, there is nothing better than a breakfast sandwich from Hero Doughnuts. It is the perfect weekend indulgence!
Vulcan Park & Museum
I loved our rehearsal dinner, which was held just outside of Homewood at Vulcan Park & Museum. Sharing that incredible view of the city from the observation tower with my husband and all our loved ones–many of whom were visiting Birmingham for the first time–was truly special. Pictured is my husband, Austin, and I on our wedding day.
The Exceptional Foundation’s Chili Cook-Off
The annual chili cook-off hosted by The Exceptional Foundation is a must-attend event. It’s a fun, family-friendly event with delicious chili (and creative sides–fried pickles, anyone)? Plus, it supports a fantastic cause–a local non-profit helping adults with special needs.
Homewood City Schools
I’m passionate about the role public schools play in building strong communities. As director of communications, my favorite part is highlighting the incredible work of our students, teachers, administrators and staff. They are what makes Homewood City Schools so special!
Lakeshore Trail & Central Park
Playground
For outdoor fun, it’s hard to beat the Lakeshore Trail! It’s perfect for family time with the kids as they ride their scooters, while my husband and I enjoy a walk. We also love Homewood Central Park’s new playground. Seeing my 5-year-old conquer the ninja wall was a proud parent moment!
