II was no more than 6, when my posse of American Girl dolls lined the corridor in my grandfather’s home, decked out in toilet paper streamers. Dear Robert, my cousin, best man, officiant, florist and wedding planner, wore every hat in the industry, including the badge of security.
I quickly chose an old Easter dress and a somewhat white pillowslip for my gown and veil before fashioning together a bouquet of dandelions. Suddenly, I was behind that closed door–the one that would open into “my forever” with Prince Charming. Balling on a budget, I improvised “The Wedding March,” humming, “ba-da, dadum,” right before processing down the hallway.
This was it. This was my moment. Then, my father so rudely interrupted the happiest moment of my life by tripping over some guests. My life? In shambles. My wedding? The laughing stock of the century. My security guard? Apparently on break.
My poor father unsuccessfully attempted to console his elementary bridezilla, promising anything from ice cream to even providing the music for my real wedding one day. Curiously, I blinked my eyes and nearly 20 years had passed.
This time, however, I stood gazing at the ornately carved French doors just seconds from giving way into the congregation. The only problem was my father wasn’t there. I couldn’t even tell him how much I missed him.
Just as beads of sweat started to drizzle down my furrowed brow, I felt a soft embrace on my shoulder–Robert, like the gentleman he was, offered his affections, telling me my dad loved me and would be here in spirit.
Truthfully, the events that followed are a bit of a merry blur. Robert walked me down the aisle, giving me away in place of my father. We all laughed and danced, and at the reception, I looked over at the band and realized Robert was right.
Every single musician performing was a longtime friend of my father. They all took time out of their schedules, and some drove for hours just to play at my wedding. Because of them, my father fulfilled his promise to me from all those years ago. They even had a guitar adorned with my father’s face on display.
It was at this moment I learned that only in fairytales do weddings go as planned. However, weddings were never supposed to be about perfection, were they? In this issue, you all will read about 12 Mountain Brook weddings. Each couple’s story is proof that love is enough, and the best weddings are the ones that hold space for those we hold dear.
Wishful for happy endings,

Show respect for your marriage; show respect to your spouse; and show respect when talking about either your marriage or your spouse to others.

A good marriage isn’t about each person contributing 50 percent and meeting in the middle. Instead, both partners must be willing and expect to give 100 percent.

The best advice wasn’t necessarily advice, rather having family and friends in my life who embody a Christian, loving marriage. I strive to replicate that.

The best marriage advice I ever received was to marry my best friend and to stay friends always, no matter what comes your way.

Tommy Mayfield finds his way back to music.
BY LAUREN H. DOWDLE
SStudent, lawyer, tech founder, consultant, mentor: Mountain Brook native Tommy Mayfield has worn many hats through the years. However, the one he keeps coming back to is musician.
In high school, Tommy and his younger brother Matthew formed a band called Inward Expedition. The pair recorded two albums while in school and performed across the Birmingham area. Their first gig was at Otey’s Tavern in Crestline Village, and they also played at events such as City Stages in Birmingham and Mountain Brook High School’s annual Battle of the Bands.
When Tommy was a senior in high school, their band won VH1’s Best Unsigned Band contest for the Southeast region. The prize for winning was playing at Memphis in May, an annual, month-long festival in Memphis.
“It was a really cool experience,” Tommy says. “The only band that played after us was Widespread Panic.”
But after graduating, Tommy says he thought his musical days were over. While his brother went on to pursue a career in music—and has since released several albums—Tommy majored in English at Vanderbilt University.
He later moved to Washington D.C. to work for International Justice Mission, which is an international human rights group. The organization has teams of lawyers and social workers who help rescue people from various forms of oppression.
“I was blown away by the needs they were addressing and that there was an organization that did that,” Tommy says.
The experience helped cultivate a passion in him to attend law school, he says. After graduating, Tommy moved back to Birmingham and practiced law at Maynard Cooper & Gale for about seven years, where he focused on business and commercial litigation.
Then in 2016, he left the firm to create a tech startup company with his wife called Wyndy, an app that connects parents with vetted college babysitters. He ran the company for about five years before hiring a new CEO and began looking for a new venture.
“I had a season where I was trying to find my next calling,” Tommy recalls. “That season lasted longer than I originally wanted it to, but that actually gave me time to spend on my music.”

“I had a season where I was trying to find my next calling. That season lasted longer than I originally wanted it to, but that actually gave me time to spend on my music.”
-Tommy Mayfield
He picked up the guitar, began tinkering around on the piano and got to a place where he was able to start writing his own songs. Tommy also started going with Matthew to their parents’ house on Smith Lake for a day or two to work on lyrics and melodies. While he says he’s enjoyed working with his brother again and getting back into music, it’s not something he would have predicted.
“When I graduated from high school, I thought, ‘That was fun, but that’s sort of the end of music for me,’” Tommy recalls. “It appears that after 20-some years, music was not yet done with me.”
Tommy created the band Crestwood Drives, naming it after the street he grew up on in Mountain Brook, and released the album, “Everything Falls Apart According to Plan,” last September. The
record features songs including “Better Days,” “Hard Roads” and “Good Woman” and can be found on music streaming services such as Apple Music, YouTube Music and Spotify.
His brother produced the album, which they recorded at Mason Music, and Tommy says Matthew did an amazing job managing all of the musicians involved.
“It was really cool to watch him operate in that capacity and see the talent he has. He brings a lot to the table given his skills and experience,” Tommy says. “My brother has been a big encouragement to me, especially early on.”
Joel Blount engineered the record, and Tommy was also joined by musicians Thomas Warren, Kyle Carpenter, Haleigh Black and Will Mason on the
album.
Describing his musical style as Americana, Tommy says he’s a fan of artists including Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers, Brandi Carlile, Sanders Bohlke and Phoebe Bridgers.
“I enjoy having a variety of musical influences to draw from,” he says.
Not only have other musicians influenced his artistic style, but also writers and theologians such as T.S. Eliot, Flannery O’Connor and Robert Capon have also had an impact on him.
Yet, music isn’t his only passion. Since leaving his role at Wyndy, Tommy works with other entrepreneurs to help them on the practical aspects of starting a business.
He’s also started a new role at The Center, which provides coaching and mentoring for men. That’s allowed Tommy to share his personal experiences, like how he’s been sober for four years, with the men he meets to help them overcome their struggles.
In a way, that’s not so different from what he does with his music. The lyrics and meanings behind each of his songs are pulled from his life and experiences. One phrase that Tommy says has resonated with him is being “stewards of our scars.”
“Songs are born of certain scars I have,” he says.
Not only does Tommy Mayfield enjoy sharing his music with audiences, but he also wants to give back to local organizations that support the arts. Tommy held his album release show for “Everything Falls Apart According to Plan” at Woodlawn Theatre in Birmingham on Jan. 11, and all of the proceeds benefited the theatre.
As part of the Mason Music Foundation, the Woodlawn Theatre pays teachers to teach lessons to students there for free. Tommy says he wanted to support those efforts and everything the theatre does for artists. The 250-capacity space is owned by Will Mason of Mason Music, and Will was also one of the musicians who performed with Tommy for the show.
“I’m a huge fan of Will as a person and of his vision for the theater,” Tommy says. “The music scene and artists need spaces like that.”
“But I also have a sense of stewardship because I feel like the songs were given to me to share in case they can be of service to others. Maybe the songs tap into their emotions or enable them to say something they haven’t been able to say.”
He says his family—including his wife, Ginger, and their two daughters—have been supportive throughout this journey. Looking ahead, Tommy says he plans to continue creating music and hopes to work on a new album this summer.
“I want to continue writing songs and recording,” Tommy says. “I hope to find more opportunities to perform live in the future.”

“Coming-of-age” is not a phrase you’d usually associate with robots, but “Annie Bot” turns that idea on its head. Annie is a robot programmed to please, but when her owner switches her to self-teaching mode, her world expands in ways she would never have previously had the capacity to imagine. This slim novel is both provocative and powerful, and it was my favorite read of 2024!

This book features the lives of 21 women who caused outrage, led armies in rebellion, wrote poetry and lived independently of the Roman Emperors. Their stories are told with humor and wit but with a deep scholarly background, too. The women of this book upend our understanding of the ancient world because they do not exist to enhance a man’s story but to create their own.

Joan Samson’s “The Auctioneer” is a quintessential, American gothic horror story. Originally published in 1975, the story follows the Moore family, headed by the earnest patriarch John, and the townsfolk of Harlowe as they contend with Perly Dunsmore, the stranger that arrives in their small New England town. Perly begins soliciting donations to host auctions in town, attracting patrons from across the Eastern Seaboard who are drawn by his glossy distortion of rural life. As the town unknowingly cedes authority to Perly, readers uncover the slow perversion of the town’s All-American ideals; enterprise is rotted by greed, and the small country community becomes gripped by fear and paranoia. This subtle terror soon gives way to a chilling denouement that is sure to leave readers wondering whom they are to blame for the events taking place.

This was my favorite read of 2024. Despite being mentioned in two books of the Bible, very little is known about Martha, the sister of Mary and Lazarus. With expert storytelling and faithfulness to the Biblical accounts, Heather details the possibilities of Martha’s life. She outlines the steps and heart changes that may have taken Martha from anxious housekeeper to bold proclaimer of faith. This book is perfect for those of us who’ve always identified more with Martha than Mary and who sometimes need the reminder that Biblical figures were human, too.
Daughters Baking serves up a delightfully different style of cakes for weddings, birthdays and beyond.
BY CARMEN BROWN
& CONTRIBUTED
TTantalizing taste buds from Mountain Brook all the way to London, England, Daughters Baking has acquired a fast-growing fan base since it opened its doors three years ago.
But, no one would ever guess it all started as an apology.
“I accidentally stood someone up,” owner Mallory Mason says with a chuckle. “I was leaving work at the Urban Standard one day, and I ran into a friend who said I was supposed to meet him somewhere at a certain time. I said, ‘I’m so sorry,’ and it just came out. ‘I said, can I bake you something?’ He said, ‘How about blueberry muffins?’”
This was no small task for Mallory, who had very little baking experience and was also a college student at Samford University at the time. However, she found an online recipe for blueberry muffins, which unleashed a passion she never knew existed.
“After that, I started baking some more,” she says. “I never knew how much fun it could be.”
Mallory says once the baker at Urban Standard found out she was baking in her free time, she started
getting Mallory to fill in for her when she was out. After she left, Mallory took over as the head baker for four years.
She sold her first cake, a red velvet, to a friend from church. From there, she started growing a huge following on Instagram, where she came up with the name, Daughters Baking.
“I didn’t know it was going to become a business, but I envisioned a soft, feminine brand,” she says. “My relationship with God is also very important to me, and the word ‘daughter’ just stuck in my head that describes that relationship.”
With Daughters Baking, Mallory has gone from blueberry muffins to her bestselling blueberry-lemon wedding cake. There’s something different about the cakes at Daughters Baking: They’re “naked.”
Popularized in 2014 by renowned baker Christina Tosi, founder of Milk Bar, naked cakes are layer cakes that have very little-to-no frosting on the sides. They are stacked in tiers with filling or frosting between each layer.
When celebrity couples such as Brad Pitt and
Angelina Jolie began serving them at their weddings, naked cakes became all the rage. Mason says her interest in the “chic, minimal design” of naked cakes grew when she was still at Urban Standard and read Christina’s book, “Momofuku Milk Bar.”
“There was something whimsical, forgiving and rustic about these types of cakes,” Mallory says. “There are a few different techniques to making them. With ours, we put a thick acetate sheet on them, and when you’re ready to serve, you peel it off.”
Couples can view the Daughters Baking cake gallery on the company’s website, which contains detailed information on sizes and pricing. Daughters Baking cakes follow a specific process that requires the cakes to be frozen for 24 hours, but customers can request their cakes be thawed ahead of time, so they will be ready to serve.
Daughters Baking also has “last-minute” cakes available, which are served frozen.
“We have a wedding coordinator, Patricia, who does consultations and works with couples on size, style and whether they prefer a particular style of cake,” Mallory says.
What stands out about her brand, she says, is the positive feedback—in-person, through email and via social media.
“I’ve had so many people tell me, ‘This is the best cake I’ve ever had,’” she says. “There’s also a real beauty about this brand. People enjoy the beautiful designs we create.”
In fact, beauty is what led her to open her 960-square-foot bakery in the heart of Mountain

“I was looking at different areas with my realtor, who showed me this building, and I loved it,” Mallory says. “It’s a beautiful area. It’s like working in a Hallmark movie.”
She estimates that about 15 percent of her business is weddings. Daughters Baking’s cakes have also grown significantly in the wholesale area through local restaurants and grocery stores such as
In the little moments and major milestones of childhood, we are here for our patients and their families – helping, healing, teaching and discovering.
Davenport’s Pizza Palace and Piggly Wiggly.
Mallory says word-of-mouth through her Instagram page has led to followers from all over.
“Several ladies have come in and said they follow me on Instagram and wanted to try our cakes,” she says. “We even had someone come in and buy cakes and take them on a plane to London for a party.”
Closer to home, Bolt Farm Treehouse, a wellknown wedding and honeymoon destination near Chattanooga, Tennessee, has also started selling cakes from Daughters Baking.
“My husband is in the music industry, and he knows Seth Bolt, one of the singers in Needtobreathe, who is one of the founders,” she says. “We send cakes there about once a month, and they use them for engagement parties and birthday parties.”
As business continues to grow, one new endeavor that Mallory is particularly excited about is helping to alleviate the problem of hunger and homelessness, both on a local and global scale.
“Right now, we’re partnering with Grace Klein Community, where five percent of our wedding cake sales go to them,” she says. “Long term, I see us partnering with an international organization. We also take donations on our website.”
Along with her other team members, Mallory also
plans to open new locations and possibly include other diet-friendly options such as vegan options, while continuing her mission “to create a contagious culture of joy and beauty, starting with serving people the best cake they have ever had.”
“For me, it’s the joy of baking.” she says.
“It’s good for the soul.”

Here, Abhi dishes out the best items to order on the menu.
Tell our readers about the founding of Maro. How did it get started?
Maro was inspired by a love for fresh, flavorful food and a desire to bring something new to Birmingham. The name “Maro” is a combination of two words that mean “to give,” created by a Japanese anthropologist. From the beginning, the goal was to offer bold flavors, fresh ingredients and a dining experience that feels both creative and welcoming.
What are some of the best menu items, and what makes them so delicious?
Our menu celebrates bold flavors and high-quality ingredients. The Chicken Khao Soi is a standout, offering a delightful mixture of flavors and textures. Our sushigrade poke bowls such as the Tuna Mango Avocado Bowl are always crowd-pleasers. For something warm, our Coconut Soup is rich, creamy and deeply satisfying. Every dish is crafted to balance freshness, flavor
and a touch of creativity.
What would you recommend a newcomer order first off the menu?
For first-time visitors, our Momo is a comforting and flavorful introduction to our menu. For the adventurous, the Tuna Mango Avocado Bowl is a refreshing option with vibrant flavors–it’s a perfect balance of fresh tuna, creamy avocado and sweet mango. Another great option is the “Do It Yourself Poke Bowl,” where guests can explore our sushi-grade ingredients and craft their own creation. For those craving comfort, our Coconut Soup is always a winner.
What makes Maro unique from other similar restaurants in Birmingham?
Maro stands out because of its unique flavors, which blend traditional poke elements with global influences. Our focus on premium ingredients such as sushi-
grade fish and our creative dishes including the Chicken Khao Soi and Coconut Soup set us apart. We also emphasize sustainability and creating a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere for every guest.
How do you hope customers feel after eating at Maro?

Discussing getting engaged? Fabulous! Engagement rings have long been a symbol of love and unity, announcing to all your commitment for the long haul. Be sure to follow these steps as you and your beloved navigate this exciting, new journey:
Determine a comfortable budget before you start shopping. This will help narrow down options.
Learn about different types of stones, cuts, settings and band materials. Understanding the 4Cs of diamonds (cut, clarity, color and carat weight) can help you make informed decisions.
Consider different metal options, such as white gold, yellow gold, rose gold or platinum. Each metal has its own look and durability, so choose one that suits your lifestyle.
John and Amanda Bullen chose Bromberg’s for their forever rings. Amanda’s engagement ring is a solitaire oval diamond set in an 18-karat yellow gold mounting with pavé diamonds. As per her family’s tradition, Amanda wore her engagement ring on her right hand and switched it over to her left hand after the wedding ceremony.
Once you nail down your budget and have a general idea of your dream ring, start thinking about which style—timeless or trendy—you envision it to be. Here are a few things to consider:
Often associated with class and elegance, these style rings usually consist of the following:
SOLITAIRE RINGS: These feature a single diamond or gemstone set on a simple band. They are classic and will never go out of style.
TIFFANY SETTING: A variation of the solitaire, this setting lifts the diamond to maximize sparkle. This type setting usually has a thinner band to maximize the
presentation of the diamond.
ROUND BRILLIANT CUT: Known for its exceptional sparkle, this cut is a perennial favorite.
THREE-STONE RINGS: Symbolizing the past, present and future, these rings offer a classic look with sentimental meaning.
If your dream ring’s price is a little too steep, Brian recommends these alternatives, in order to prioritize quality:
MINIMALIST SETTINGS: Lower cost on the setting will maximize the budget for the center stone. The setting can always be enhanced or changed at a later date such as for a future anniversary gift.
HIGHER COLOR: At times to fit a customer’s budget, diamond experts will sacrifice color to hit a certain budget.
By focusing on Exceptional-cut grades, you can alter the appearance of color as much as two-color grades.
This is especially important with fancy-shaped diamonds.
A 1.8-carat stone can sometimes appear as large as a 2-carat stone but at a significantly lower cost. When shopping, pay close attention to the millimeter size to ensure you’re getting the best value. Choosing a diamond based solely on carat weight doesn’t always guarantee the size or look for which you’re aiming.
On the other hand, “on trend” engagement ring styles tend to reflect contemporary tastes and may vary significantly based on current fashion. Some examples of trendy designs include:
COLORED GEMSTONES: Sapphires, emeralds and other colored stones are often chosen over traditional diamonds for a unique twist.
HALO SETTINGS: A ring where a central stone is surrounded by smaller accent stones for added brilliance. Halo rings can help maximize appearance when working on a budget.
STACKABLE RINGS: Multiple bands worn together can create a modern, personalized look.
GEOMETRIC SHAPES: Rings featuring unique shapes and designs, such as hexagons or asymmetrical styles, appeal to those seeking something different.

Three different bridal parties, three different styles. Take a look at how these brides utilized seasonal color palettes to elevate their wedding day themes.
Kineshia Smith opted for a vivid color palette rich in hues of maroon, rouge, pink and ivory.
Styled by David’s Bridal, the bridal party wore an all-black, one-shoulder, stretch satin dress by Galina Signature. The offset in color allowed for the bride to shine, and the pops of color in the florals and decor tied the theme together well for such beautiful nuptials.

To complement her chic, minimalist gown, Kelsey Shepherd selected a more maximalist bridesmaid dress for her bridal party. The bridesmaids wore a floral, bow-shoulder, satin maxi dress with an asymmetrical tiered skirt in “Cottage Rose Larkspur,” compliments of Bella Bridesmaids. These lively, whimsical gowns are not only gorgeous, but they also helped set the tone for a perfect summer wedding.
Bridesmaid Dresses: Bella Bridesmaids
Ja’Tavia Pettway wore an emerald green, mermaid-style wedding gown, reminiscent of the Great Gatsby era. For her bridesmaids, she chose a deep saffron, off-the-shoulder jersey dress from Gabriel’s Bridal & Formal that was opposite to hers on the color wheel. These hues, paired with the groomsmen’s ivory-colored suits, made for an alluring, bohemian theme.

What “wedding day” items should a bride never go without on her big day?
We always make sure to have toupee tape in our wedding day kit! It is 20 times stronger than generic clothing tape and can be used for everything.
What is the number-one mistake you see brides make on their wedding day?
The main mistake we see brides make on their wedding day is forgetting to be truly present in the moment. Do not get wrapped up in trends and making sure everything is “social media ready!” We always make sure that the day has plenty of cushion time in order for the couple to bask in the day.
What are some of the best ways to calm nerves/ alleviate anxiety before a bride walks down the aisle?
If a bride is feeling anxious before the procession, we always give her a few minutes alone to take a few deep breaths. Refocusing on why we are here is key, and those nerves always turn back into excitement.
To make the most of one’s wedding day, what do you advise a bride to prioritize?
We advise her to do a first look! Getting all of the photos done ahead of the ceremony allows the couple to spend more time with their family and friends. Time, specifically not feeling rushed, is our number-one priority.
What wedding trends do you think will become timeless, and which do you think will “date” a wedding, looking back?
In regards to wedding planning, I believe that short engagements will eventually date a wedding due to the couple being unable to truly focus on the highly curated elements that mean the most to them. For this same reason, longer engagements will always be classic and lead to timeless designs.

What “wedding day” items should a bride never go without on her big day?
We love when we see a wedding day kit that’s usually brought by the wedding planner that includes needed items such as bobby pins, medicines, feminine products, safety pins, stain sticks, white chalk, towelettes, tissues and other “emergency” use items.
What is the number-one mistake you see brides make on their wedding day?
Not planning enough time for hair and makeup in the morning comes to mind. It’s the first part of the day, and as the morning progresses, things can fall behind. We love when our clients remember to place themselves (and whoever is helping them in their dress) in the middle of the bunch to ensure they are ready when they need to start getting dressed.
What are some of the best ways to calm nerves/ alleviate anxiety before a bride walks down the aisle?
We really believe having an hour of down time before the ceremony helps alleviate anxiety. You are able to relax with your friends and family, knowing we’ve captured all the important moments up until this time of the day. We find many couples are so thankful to rest and re-energize without worrying about cameras or moments. It’s truly a “living in the moment” time period.
To make the most of one’s wedding day, what do you advise a bride to prioritize?
We believe most couples should look at prioritizing a photographer and a wedding planner. These are two vendors that truly ensure your entire day will flow seamlessly without stress. In our experience, our clients who select a planner that knows their other priorities (having a stress-free day, a flawless ceremony, a fun-filled reception, spending intentional time with friends and family) helps create a timeline that can be executed seamlessly.
What wedding trends do you think will become timeless, and which do you think will “date” a wedding, looking back?
We think photographs that are overly edited are going to be what “dates” the look of a wedding. The photos, to us, usually appear too far from what you see with your eyes–too warm, too dark, too bright or too many changes to the deepness and saturation of the colors. We believe a timeless look will represent the day as it naturally was. On the other hand, couples having a first look is a “trend” that we feel has come to light strongly within the past decade, and we don’t see it going anywhere. We don’t see a single emotional difference with our couples who do a first look versus our couples who choose to see each other at the aisle.

What “wedding day” items should a bride never go without on her big day?
Water is crucial! One’s wedding day is such a long day, and she’ll be on her feet a lot. Staying hydrated is key to feeling one’s best.
What is the number-one mistake you see brides make on their wedding day?
Not living in the moment and not soaking it all in is
the number-one mistake. So many brides feel so much pressure to have a perfect day because they have invested so much into such a monumental day in their lives. However, the best thing to do is trust those they’ve hired for their wedding day, and focus on marrying their spouse.
What are some of the best ways to calm nerves/alleviate anxiety before a bride walks down the aisle?
This really starts before the wedding day with who she surrounds herself with the morning of and the day of the wedding. We advise her to make sure that her bridal party is made up of the people she feels the most relaxed, at ease and comfortable around. Being around her absolute closest friends will keep the day feeling celebratory and stress-free.
To make the most of one’s wedding day, what do you advise a bride to prioritize?
Every bride needs a good wedding planner. It could even be just a coordinator if a full-service planner isn’t in the budget. Every bride needs a point person for their wedding day, so she can relax and celebrate!
What wedding trends do you think will become timeless, and which do you think will “date” a wedding, looking back?
Anything that is very trendy is going to date a wedding: disco balls, full-on Babies Breath. While they are so fun, in 20 years, one will definitely be able to date the wedding from those trends. To me, a timeless wedding can be anything that reflects the couples’ personalities, styles and love story. We encourage our couples to think about those things when making decisions, so their wedding will always be timeless to them.

Our story actually begins with our families. Both of our moms grew up in New Orleans, went to the same camp and later ended up in Mountain Brook, Alabama, where our parents settled and raised four kids each. My brothers first met Sam’s older brothers through baseball, and I met his twin sister through softball. We became high school sweethearts and spent many hours chatting in the cafeteria, school library and took long walks on the Cannon Ball Trail.
I was completely fooled the day Sam proposed. On Feb. 25, 2023, we were heading to Birmingham for a dinner celebrating his grandfather’s one year of going to heaven. Our plan was to stop by the Cannon Ball Trail–a normal walking spot for us–then meet his sister for drinks. When we got to our usual spot, I turned to go sit down. When I turned back, Sam was on one knee with a ring, asking me to marry him.
My 91-year-old grandfather gave us the best advice: Wake up each morning and ask yourself how you can make each other happy.
From dancing with our grandparents during our family dance to having Santa, Mrs. Claus, Buddy the Elf and the Grinch make an appearance, the day was filled with many special moments. What really stood out was the moment my wedding dress designer pulled out the delicate Italian lace to be used for my custom bolero. I was able to weave the lace design from my dress into all the different aspects of the wedding. The lace pattern became our “H” logo on the invitations, cups and more–a little Easter egg for those who noticed.

We initially met at the University of Alabama through a dinner debate society, The Other Club, when I was in undergrad and Ben was getting his MBA. I apparently made a witty comment that caught Ben’s attention. Fast forward to both of us living in Birmingham, and we reconnected at a social event for the Rotaract Club of Birmingham, a civic organization with which we are both involved.
Ben told me that there was a rose bush sale at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and that his dad asked him to go get a rose bush for his mom for Valentine’s Day. When I didn’t see any signs for the rosebush sale, I said, “I told you so!” Then, I was completely surprised, when Ben got down on one knee.
We got married at Saint Paul’s and had a few meetings with Father Jerabek in preparation for marriage. Our photographer, Eleanor, also suggested a few different books about preparing for marriage.
There are so many special moments that I remember. One was standing with my dad, getting ready to walk down the aisle. The organist began performing, and I was so excited to walk down that aisle to Ben. The sunset photos we took afterwards were so magical. It was fun and special to have a minute to soak in the fact that we were officially married.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We are college sweethearts from the University of Alabama.
Connor brought the ring up to my family’s lake house in Massachusetts for a family trip. On my birthday, he proposed at my favorite spot that I have been going to since I was young. He got the help of all of my brothers to throw a big celebration with fireworks afterwards.
We had meetings with our officiant, Mary Bea Sullivan, of Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church and now Saint Stephens Episcopal Church to discuss marriage, but we have dated for six years now and knew we were ready. We wanted to get married on our anniversary, May 11, but as that date was not available for our venue and Mother’s Day weekend, we picked March 9. We only had about six months to plan, which was perfect because neither of us got stressed with wedding planning.
Our first look was so special. I was crying because I was so excited for him to see my dress, and he was facing the other direction. My bridesmaids were up in the window of our venue, watching and recording. When Connor turned around, his reaction was priceless! Eric and Jamie got the perfect photo to capture it.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We went to the same school from Mother’s Day Out all the way through college. We basically lived parallel lives but did not run in the same circles. It wasn’t until several years post-grad that we reconnected at a tailgate party at our alma mater, Auburn University. We immediately started dating afterwards. The rest is history!
We live in Crestline Park. He had my friend call me, pretending to panic and say her dogs had gotten out. She asked if I could run to the park and see if they were there. I love dogs and would do anything for a dog, ha! I ran out to the park and found a full picnic had been set up. Trey got down on one knee in the park where we had made so many memories with our dog, Stent. I screamed and didn’t even let him get the words out before I said enthusiastically, “Yes!”
FOR MARRIAGE
We prepared for marriage by attending premarital counseling through our church, Redeemer Community Church. Dwight Castle was our officiant, and he walked us through a premarital book.
Our first look calmed both of our nerves and gave us a moment of peace before the wedding festivities.

Weston and I also loved our private moment, taking postceremony pictures during sunset by the West Lounge. Tasteful Tea Band put on an amazing performance during our reception. Overall, it was the dreamiest day with the best team and guests.

We met through mutual friends after I moved back to Fort Worth, and we were conveniently set up on a blind date. We hit it off and spent the whole week together after meeting, and well, here we are.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met on my first day of work at Mountain Brook Schools. William is the communications director for the school system and started a few months prior. I joined the junior high faculty as a teacher in mid-July, and we met at the district’s new teacher orientation breakfast a week later. William likes to joke that he waited a whole two days before asking me out.
William opted out of his graduation ceremony for his master’s degree and alternatively chose to have a “family dinner.” The dinner happened but was a cover up to get dressed up. On the way to dinner, he proposed in the backyard of the house of which we now live.
I worked with Engaged Wedding Library in Homewood, Alabama, as well as Brittany Lott from Elle Affairs. Engaged Wedding Library has so many great vendors that made our day so special. Brittany is a rock star, and she made the weekend so easy for everyone.
My favorite moment was pulling off a huge surprise–I had Big Al make a guest appearance at our reception, knowing William loves the University of Alabama. It was such a fun moment, and I’ll cherish this memory forever. William’s favorite moment aside from being surrounded by family and friends was also the Big Al appearance, which he says was awesome and paired well with the playing of “Sweet Home Alabama.” It was the perfect moment.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We had been going to the same school since 7th grade, so we always knew of each other. However, our paths did not cross until the summer before high school, when we noticed each other on a Sunday at The Cathedral of Saint Paul—the same church where we got married. After noticing each other week after week, we slowly started to interact more and even hung out at the lake with mutual friends over Labor Day weekend. We started dating in October that year and have been together ever since—10 years and counting.
We took a trip to Rome, Italy, in December 2021, which Jack framed as a graduation trip since we had both recently graduated from Auburn University. We spent 10 days exploring the city, and on the last full day in Rome, which was my birthday, we attended morning mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. Jack got down on one knee in the chapel after the mass! Afterwards, we spent the morning drinking espresso and walking around The Vatican before calling our families to share the news.
We attended premarital counseling with Father Kevin Bazzel.
My favorite moment of the day was the wedding ceremony. We spent a lot of time choosing the music, readings, prayers and more for the ceremony because it meant so much to us. We got married in The Cathedral of Saint Paul. It was a beautiful ceremony, and what made it so meaningful was all of our family and friends there to celebrate with us.

Thomas and I met during our freshmen year at the University of Alabama. I am from Athens, Georgia, and I didn’t know many people. After asking the only boy I knew to my first Chi Omega date party, I asked my friends if they had anyone they’d recommend for the next one. They set me up with Thomas, and we went to our “Rhyme or Reason” date party dressed as a “Fairy and Harry (Potter).” We immediately hit it off.
My birthday is July 12, so Thomas and his parents told me that we should go to Mountain Brook Club for dinner before I left town. As we were pulling up to the club for dinner, Thomas told me that his brother John had left his golf clubs on the course earlier that day, and we needed to grab them. As we got out of the car, I started thinking, “Is this happening?” Sure enough, we walked up a little hill, and there was a full setup. It had been raining all day and stopped just long enough for him to propose outside. My best friend from New York City was there to take photos, and both of our families were waiting inside the club.
After dating for five years, enduring long distance for two and facing many ups and downs— including Thomas battling stage four cancer and undergoing chemo in 2022—I felt we were truly ready and prepared for marriage. We did premarital counseling at Church of the Highlands with two wonderful people who guided us through the Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts curriculum.

Mountain Brook City Council President + 2024 Jemison Visionary Award Winner
Irondale Furnace
I grew up on a street in Mountain Brook that was right next to Shades Creek. As children, my friends and I used to cross the creek and hunt for cannonballs at what we called “the old cannonball factory.” I don’t think I ever found one. This is now correctly identified as the Irondale Furnace and has one of the most wonderful walking trails. Pictured is a shot taken by local photographer Rachel Callahan with Picture Birmingham.
When I was growing up in Mountain Brook, my father, who had a particular sweet tooth, would take us there on Sunday evenings. It was then known as Baskin-Robins and was located where Etc. is now. The creamery had student desks as chairs lined around the windows. As I started my own family, I carried on the tradition.
Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church I have been a member of Saint Luke’s since birth, and as an adult, I have come to love the early evening Sunday service. During the pandemic, all services were held in the pavilion outside, and I enjoyed listening to the music and the service and the sounds of nature and city life. The church also has a labyrinth in its side garden that I find so very peaceful and tranquil to walk.
Mountain Brook City Council
Mountain Brook has the best city hall! All are welcome by our wonderful city manager Sam Gaston and his fabulous assistant Janet Forbes. I enjoy the work I do as a city council member and all those with whom I work. I wish more residents would come to our meetings, not just when they have an issue. We all benefit from more involvement.
The Halloween parade has always been one of my favorite events of the town! I used to watch it from city hall’s balcony–a good viewing station–but then migrated to the front row. The last two years, I have been part of the parade on The WitchCraft float, which is sponsored by Craft’s on Church Street. It is so much fun to dress up as a witch and hand out candy to all the adorable children.
