LOOK In the artworks where you see the road, notice three things on or around the road. What do they tell you about the journey the artist is depicting? In the artworks where you don’t see a road, try to imagine where the road is, what it looks like, and what it would feel like to travel on it. What do you see that makes you envision the road and the experience of being on it that way?
ASK Why do you think each artist chose to represent the road in their art? How is the road related to the work the artist created?
THINK When you leave this exhibition to your next destination, will you take a road to get there? On your journey, look around you and think about what scene or image you would want to capture from the road.
DRAW Use this space to sketch a place you’ve been, where you are now, or where you want to go—or write down words that describe the look or feel of that place.
On the Road Again Sheldon Statewide Exhibition 2022– 23
The open road holds a special place in American imagination, bringing up thoughts of past journeys and future possibilities on seemingly endless highways. For many Midwesterners, travel involves long drives past wide-open landscapes and sprawling fields on routes such as Interstate 80, scenic byways, and the many roads in between. Landscapes play a major role in this exhibition, displaying the beauty of the natural world and how artists and travelers understand their place in it. Roadside attractions and accommodations are common subjects that can reveal the charm, necessities, and even eccentricities of travel. Some destinations are instantly recognizable, such as James Alinder’s photograph of Mount Rushmore, while others are felt more abstractly, such as Faith Ringgold’s exploration of a journey through the woods. On the Road Again seeks to visualize the significance of the American road. These collected works of art demonstrate that while everyone’s experience is unique, there are sights and sentiments that contribute to a collective imagination of the open road.
