Hosted by the Shell Point Photo Club, you’ll find that Don’s photos illustrate the use of shapes and details to convey motion, speed, power, elegance, and utility. Don views the automobile as art, a sculpture exquisitely crafted by artists whose work conveys the vehicle’s character and personality. While visiting the Shell Point Photo Studio and Gallery, sign up for a drawing to win one of Don’s iconic prints. At the same time, the British Car Club of Southwest Florida will showcase antique, English-made automobiles. Marvel at the polished gleam and impeccable craftsmanship of cars like the 1961 Morgan Plus 4, 1966 Jaguar E-Type, and 1972 Mini Cooper. The owners of each vehicle will be present to answer questions about their classic cars. To tie the whole event together, you’ll be able to purchase lunch from food trucks that will be available to satisfy any craving for British fare that you may have! Choose from two food trucks: The Brit Pit and Southwest Florida Weiner Dogs. After lunch, stop by the Tamu Cupcakery or Love Boat Ice Cream stands where you’ll find an array of sweet treats that are also available for purchase. You’ll also enjoy live entertainment from the band Flash Back, who will perform some of the great hits by British entertainers. You won’t want to miss the fellowship, door prizes, and much more awaiting you at this event!

As the page of the calendar turns from 2017 to 2018, we start the beginning of another new year here at Shell Point. Each year in this beautiful community is special, but this particular year marks Shell Point’s 50th anniversary! An anniversary is a time to celebrate the memories of yesterday, the joys of today, and the hopes of tomorrow. As we cross this significant threshold, we start by acknowledging God’s gracious provision for Shell Point and His love for both the people who live here and the people who work here. Shell Point is dedicated to the service of God and the care of His people and we rely on His strength each day as we aspire to faithfully carry out the mission and ministry of this organization.
Celebrating All Year Long
To celebrate our 50th Anniversary, several departments are working diligently to design an entire year of events around this exciting milestone. Do you remember the songs, games, and movies from 1968? Well, you’ll have fun attending movie nights, parties, and special programs organized to take you back to the year Shell Point started. SPTV will produce special segments commemorating the history of Shell Point. Teri Kollath, manager of The Academy of Lifelong Learning, is organizing special classes that will look at the past 50 years of interesting topics such as space exploration. Do

The proceeds will be added to the overall Arts Center capital campaign goal of $15 million. Marge Lee (Lucina), special advisor to The Arts Center, was thrilled with the results. “On behalf of the artists and artisans of Shell Point, I would like to express my gratitude toward the sponsors and residents who generously gave toward this annual tournament.”

Seth Mendell (Tellidora) will provide a historical look at the geography, industry, and history of the United States’ Story of New England Whaling (FLL14). This twopart class will begin on Monday, January 29. The story will begin long before electricity and petroleum, when ships sailing from New England ports carried cargos of whale oil to light the lamps of the western world – through to when the shortage of whales, the Civil War, and several Arctic disasters also led to the decline of the industry. Da Vinci, Picasso, and some of the world’s other greatest artists carried a sketch pad, which allowed them to draw from their immediate experience and served as a written diary to depict objects, people, feelings, and ideas. In this workshop, Sketch Pad Drawing (FLL15), with instructor Herb Sklar (Eagles Preserve), you will have three
Tuesdays, beginning January 30, to accustom yourself to this process. The History of Russia to Lenin (FLL16) is Professor Kerr’s newest class on Tuesday, January 30. He will explore the third century to the 1917 Russian Revolution and subsequent civil war when Stalin took the USSR in a different direction. The largest country in the world by area, Russia is the ninth most populous country with more than 144 million people. It has had an immense, pivotal role in the first and second world wars, the Iron Curtain, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the collapse of the USSR, and the rise of Putin and his global ambitions. The lecture will be comprehensively illustrated by Professor Kerr.
Academy on the Go
Begin the semester with a trip to the colorful little island village between Cape Coral and Pine Island for The Flavors of Matlacha Island: Presented by True Tours (OTG01) on Friday, January 26. This delightful historical, artistic, ecological, and flavorful adventure will combine Matlacha’s salty history with the signature tastes of this little island, which serves as a commercial fishing village with the alter ego of an artist colony. The next educational field trip will take place on Monday, January 29, as travelers will explore “Raisin’ Cane” in Clewiston (OTG02). The Clewiston Chamber of Commerce and U.S. Sugar has invited Shell Point residents to spend the day with them and to enjoy nature and be educated about the history of this part of the unique locale. It certainly promises to be a “sweet” trip.

Pavilion Maintains Five-Star Rating with Deficiency-Free Survey The Larsen Pavilion skilled nursing center recently earned a deficiency-free rating – and maintained its five-star rating – following a survey conducted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This federal agency is responsible for overseeing the quality ratings of skilled nursing facilities that participate in Medicare or Medicaid and received a coveted five out of five star rating. The Five-Star Quality Rating System is used to rank nursing facilities by reviewing facility performance for three types of performance measures: health inspections, where measures are based on outcomes from state health inspection surveys; staffing, which measures based on staffing levels; and quality measures, which are based on the CMS Minimum Data Set that records outcomes of care. Cameron “This outstanding accomplishment is a direct reflection of Honeycutt the ongoing daily focus on quality outcomes for our Pavilion residents,” said Cameron Honeycutt, director of long term care. “Please join me in congratulating our Pavilion team for carrying out Shell Point’s mission and commitment to excellence.” Shell Point Life | January 2018

Shell Point’s cadre of volunteers will have a new way to record their volunteer hours served! Just about anywhere you can find volunteers at Shell Point, you will now find a new, specialized software program, called Volgistics, that can aid and assist with logging time served, data storage, and scheduling – just to name a few functions. This system is used across the nation to provide volunteer management for healthcare organizations, animal shelters, food banks, museums, libraries, zoos, and other nonprofit organizations. The function that stands out most for Shell Point’s purposes is Volgistics’ ability to capture hours served, no matter what volunteer duty is performed or where it was performed. This means residents who volunteer on projects from home, or out and about in the community have a quick, efficient way to log their volunteer hours at their convenience.

Pavilion, a kiosk station has been installed for use. A simple touchscreen allows a volunteer to key in their personal identification number (PIN) when reporting to their assignment. The volunteer can log out the same way when their shift is over. The software automatically records and calculates their time in the Shell Point database. Maestro Nir Kabaretti leads the Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra in a performance that focuses exclusively on Beethoven compositions. The program represents both a youthful and mature Beethoven, with the Overture to Coriolan, Symphony No. 1 and the remarkable Piano Concerto No. 5 in Eb, Op. 73. Hear clear musical references to Beethoven’s predecessors in Symphony No. 1, particularly his teacher Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Piano Concerto No. 5 is popularly known as the “Emperor Concerto,” and was Beethoven’s last piano concerto. The Symphony will be joined by Peruvian-born pianist Priscilla Navarro for this performance. At Florida Gulf Coast University, she received the Steinway Piano Society, Gomez, and Williams scholarships. Priscilla has performed in South America, Italy, and Poland. Glenn Miller got his musical start when his father brought home a mandolin. Glenn promptly traded it for an old battered horn, which he practiced every chance he got. During his career, Miller played and recorded with the likes of Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Gene Krupa, Eddie Condon, and “A BAND OUGHT TO HAVE A SOUND ALL OF ITS Coleman Hawkins. In addition, OWN. IT OUGHT TO HAVE A Glenn also worked for radio studio PERSONALITY.” –GLENN MILLER conductors like Victor Young, Carl Fenton, and Jacques Renard. In 1934, Miller became the musical director of the Dorsey Band, and later went on to organize the Ray Noble Orchestra, which included such players as Charlie Spivak, Peewee Erwin, Bud Freeman, Johnny Mince, George Van Eps, and Delmar Kaplan. With its unique jazz sound, the modern-day Glenn Miller Orchestra is still considered one of the greatest bands of all time. Today, the orchestra performs an average of 300 shows each year.

TECH TIP What Are Social Networking Sites? B

Social networking sites build upon the concept where you are connected to new people through people you already know. The purpose of some networking sites may be purely social, allowing users to establish friendships or romantic relationships, while others may focus on establishing business connections. Although the features of social networking sites differ, all allow you to provide information about yourself and offer some type of communication mechanism that enables you to connect with other users. On some sites, you can browse for people based on certain criteria, while other sites require that you be “introduced” to new people through a connection you share. Many of the sites have communities or subgroups that may be based on a particular interest. How can you protect yourself?
Limit the amount of personal information you post. Do not post information that would make you vulnerable, such as your

address, or information about your schedule or routine. Be wary of strangers. The Internet makes it easy for people to misrepresent their identities and motives. If you interact with people you do not know, be cautious about the amount of information you reveal or agreeing to meet them in person. Use strong passwords. Protect your account with passwords that cannot easily be guessed. If your password is compromised, someone else may be able to access your account and pretend to be you. Keep software, particularly your web browser, up to date. Install software updates so that attackers cannot take advantage of known problems or vulnerabilities. Many operating systems offer automatic updates. If this option is available, you should enable it. Use and maintain anti-virus software. Anti-virus software helps protect your computer against known viruses, so you may be able to detect and remove the virus before it can do any damage.

What a remarkable vision! Who would have ever dreamed that from an out-of-the-way, mangrove-covered, mosquito-infested swamp would arise what has become known as Shell Point Retirement Community? What is remarkable is not that anything would arise from this piece of earth, but that the vision would emerge, not from real estate developers, but from a Christian denomination. A denomination seeking to create a place where an increasingly aging population would find grace, purpose

and dignity. An organization committed to affirming the God-ordained value of humanity throughout the life span. What is, and always has been, characteristic about Shell Point is its vibrancy. I was never as busy when I worked on a university campus as I have been working on this campus! And it’s the good kind of “busy.” The energy, creativity, compassion, service, and enterprise on this campus surpasses anything a college community can offer. Many of us who now count it a privilege to work at Shell Point would probably not have thought about working here as our first occupational choice. We had to be convinced. We had to understand something of the vision that set the stage for this community. We had to know we were called, not just to an occupation, but to a way of life. For me, it was God who did the convincing. The scripture text seemed to leap from the page when I read it. I was wrestling with God’s will concerning this ministry. Now the answer, directly from
As a ministry of The Christian and Missionary Alliance, the vision for Shell Point Village was deeply rooted in the foundational goals of the denomination. Since the early years of the community, the Village Church has played a central role.
God’s word, was clear: The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the LORD; they flourish in the courts of our God. They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green, to declare that the LORD is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him. (Psalm 92:12–15, ESV)
I wasn’t relaxing under any palm trees in Morgantown, West Virginia, when I read that text. The intended location was clear. And I never wanted to engage in ministry where there wouldn’t be spiritual fruit. But the promise was unmistakable. Fruit would be borne. People would flourish. God would be glorified. I could grasp that vision. But that was the vision all along. For fifty years it was the vision. It’s a privilege to be a part of it. Let’s celebrate!

very year, The Village Church at Shell Point welcomes international workers and hosts events all week long that focus on missions and ministry around the world. The church becomes an international gathering place for all those who have a global interest in people, places, and the changes occurring in the world. They are coming to Shell Point! What’s going on? It is Global Impact Week at The Village Church. The theme for the 2018 Global Impact Week is “Chosen to Proclaim God’s Glory.” A new theme song has been written for these events by Village Church member Pat Dys. Several dynamic speakers will not only tell audiences about their work, but also how they were called to be international workers. Andy Brake has a Ph.D. and teaches in Indonesia. His wife, Lora, also teaches there. They will be at Shell Point to tell their story about teaching missiology, theology, church history, ethics and Old Testament history—in a Muslim country. They aren’t the only ones coming to Lora and Andy Brake Shell Point; Tim Meier will be here too. Tim is the director of Envision, which is a missional arm of the Christian and Missionary Alliance that identifies and develops leaders. He and his wife, Rachel, innovate, establish, and strengthen communities of faith in key urban environments. The best part about Global Impact Week at The Village Church is that all are welcome. That means there is a seat for every resident of Shell Point and their guests who want to know what is happening in the world from the perspective of the Christian workers who are engaged and committed to the exciting calling they have answered. Want to know more? The Village Church office has the answers at (239) 454-2147 – as well as complimentary banTim Meier quet tickets for Monday evening’s Global Impact Banquet.

This season, the Banyan Grille will introduce food connoisseurs to a style of cooking that originated in the 1970s by the French, known as sous vide. Pronounced “sue veed,” the name of this process actually translates to “under vacuum.” Using this technique, food is vacuum-sealed in a cooking pouch and heated to a precise temperature in a water bath. Cooking with the sous vide method offers many benefits. It yields different and often better results than many other cooking techniques. The flavors, textures, and precision in execution makes this method

one of the Banyan Grille’s favorites. Benefits of the Sous Vide Method Wonderful Taste! Any flavors imaginable can be infused into the food while it cooks in the sealed pouch. This in return produces tremendous results – not only in flavor, but also in texture. Pure Precision! Chefs around the globe use this technique mainly because of the precision and control one can attain through this process. If well-prepared and executed with a scientific approach,
the results speak for themselves with an extremely consistent product. Great Versatility! There are few limitations with sous vide. One can cook almost anything from meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, vegetables and desserts. The Banyan Grille recently debuted a new dining menu, which features several dishes cooked in the sous vide style, including the charred octopus antipasti and the herb-roasted filet mignon. During your next visit to the Banyan Grille, please ask your server about these new menu items. There is simply nothing like them! Shell Point Life | January 2018

Nature’s Notebook By Steve Morton,

Puff the Magic Dragon It was in the fall of 1964 when our family became the proud owners of a brand-new convertible Mustang. Saturday morning was crisp and dry as I helped my dad retract the white canvas top into the recess behind the back seat and then snap the boot cover over the folded apparatus. My mother too, carefully shrouded her beehive with a sheer headscarf loosely under her chin. I was impatient to ride into the future of automotive engineering and I remember thinking “was this necessary?” since she already applied a toxic dose of Aqua Net. When we were in the car together, the radio was on and we were singing. The early 1960s was the height of the American folk music revival and St. Louis radio station KXOX at 630 on the AM dial played folk in heavy rotation. We had our favorite groups and songs: Kingston Trio, The New Christy Minstrels, and of course Peter, Paul, and Mary. My father, in a contrived baritone, bellowed out solo “If I Had a Hammer.” My mother and I harmonized along with Peter, Paul, and Mary.
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist In a land called Honnah Lee
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff, oh!
Puff was a song about the innocence of childhood lost. The story of Puff and Jackie was both happy and melancholy, a parable and paradox. But like Puff, we outgrew folk trios, beehive hairdos and the rest of 60s kitsch has been relegated to the dustbin of time. Yet recently, the noble dragon Puff made his way back into my consciousness. Calliandra haematocephala is a native plant on the third largest island in the world. Borneo is located in the Indonesian archipelago, a region known for man-eating water snakes often referred to as mythical dragons in local folklore. While some may
call haematocephala the “Powder Puff Plant,” I believe that instead, it roars DRAGON. The genus name of calliandra is a combined Latin word of kalli- meaning beautiful and andros meaning male because of the hundreds of male stamen structures that radiate like an explosion from the center of the blossom. Red as flame, the flower takes on the appearance of a fire-breather. Next, observe the bi-pinnate leaves that seem as overlapping dorsal dragon scales. Finally, like Puff, our dragon plant is magic. As a member of the legume family, calliandra can create nitrogen. In a symbiotic relationship with microorganisms (like that of Puff and Jackie) the calliandra can absorb atmospheric nitrogen and convert it into nitrogen fertilizer available for the plant’s use. Yes, there is more of “Dragon” than of “Powder” in this special plant! However, remember that dragons are elusive and difficult to pursue. Traveling to Borneo or even the lands of Honnah Lee could be arduous. But if you, like me, believe in dragons and want to see Shell Point’s “Magic Dragon” frolicking in the mists of the Caloosahatchee, journey with your innocence intact to the courtyard in Nautilus. Behold our Dragon and sing that song you know by heart.
