I’ve just seen the first bottle rocket of New Year’s Eve shoot across the sky. Okay so it’s only 5:45pm, but when you live in the kind of suburb that I do, it’s not difficult to find some yahoo looking for a reason to light up some fireworks. Anyway, as I watched its light twinkle and fade away, it got me to thinking about New Year’s resolutions. In case you don’t already know, I am not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions. I’m not even a mid-sized or small fan of them, actually. I might say that I hate them, but ‘hate’ is a strong word I reserve for things like laundry left in the washing machine for more than two hours. But these New Year’s resolution things are, if you ask me, a recipe for disaster. People make these grand promises to themselves for what they are going to do in the next 365 days of their lives, only to feel like crap when they give up after a week or so. I think the biggest part of the pressure comes from this misguided concept that a new year has to begin on January first. Let’s be honest, if you really want to make a change, your year can begin on January first, December thirty-first or any day in between. No matter when you start, there are always 365 days ahead to call your year. Rather than making big promises like losing that pesky 67 pounds or finally running that princess marathon, why not try some of these ideas for the 365 days you begin when you are really ready? Find your place of peace. We all tend to have so much chaos in our lives. Sometimes, it’s difficult to just find the quiet we need so desperately within ourselves. My place of peace is on my upstairs balcony. I can look at the sky and watch the trees blow in the breeze. You can choose anywhere you like, except your closet. That’s just a little too cliché and frankly, a bit creepy. Do something nice for a true friend. Oftentimes, the people we spend the most time and energy on are the people who least deserve or appreciate it. The more you allow someone to take advantage of you, the more they will. So, take a break from the bloodsuckers and give of yourself to someone who has been there for you time and time again. And remember, sometimes the truest friend you have is your significant other or a relative. Do something nice for a total stranger. Maybe it’s someone short a buck or two at the grocery store or behind your cart full of stuff, holding only one thing. You’ll know the moment when it comes and when it does, don’t let it slip away. Write someone a letter. Not a text or an email or a facemail or a tweet. Get out a pen, a piece of paper, an envelope and a stamp. Show that person, and yourself, how much you truly value them by using your own hands and heart to personally write them a letter and have it arrive in their mailbox. Stop being a victim. Most of the time, we are truly our own worst enemy. No matter what anyone else says or does to you, the truth is that you are the only one in control of your life and your choices. You have the power to change anything you don’t like into something you do. So, no more blaming other people or circumstances. Take responsibility for your own life and use your powers for good. There’s more, but I am out of space and still need to have something to write about for the next twelve issues. Our new year here at She starts next month, with our 14th Anniversary Issue. So you see, we practice what we preach—our 365 day cycle begins in February. See you next month.

in the news The Seven States (Or More) That Could See Marriage Equality In 2013 The Supreme Court is taking up two cases related to the marriage rights of gay and lesbian couples, three states’ voters approved marriage equality at the polls in November, and conservative former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said this past week he can accept the “reality” of marriage between same-sex couples as a “legal document issued by the state.” In his comments to The Huffington Post, Gingrich said, “[T]he reality is going to be that in a number of American states — and it will be more after 2014 — gay relationships will be legal, period.” Coming off the victories in Maryland, Maine, and Washington — as well as the defeat of an amendment to ban same-sex couples from marrying in Minnesota — there are several states where advocates are looking to move on marriage equality in the coming months. As Freedom to Marry’s national campaign director, Marc Solomon, told BuzzFeed, “It’s crucially important during the next six months to build on the powerful momentum of the four ballot victories and win additional states, creating the most favorable climate possible for the U.S. Supreme Court to rule our way.” Here’s a look at the seven states — or, depending on the Supreme Court, more — where advocates hope to see marriage equality in the first six months of 2013.
Some Maryland county clerks resist officiating same-sex marriages The Chief Clerk of the Circuit Court for St. Mary’s County, Md., said that some deputy clerks were opposed to the state’s new law legalizing same-sex marriage, based on their religious convictions and will no longer officiate at wedding ceremonies. Joan Williams told LGBTQ Nation that those clerks no longer perform marriages as of January 1st when the new law took effect. According to Williams, she felt that she could respect their religious beliefs while still maintaining her office’s ability to carry out its legally defined functions. “There are some persons in my office that have voiced some opposition to performing same-sex marriage ceremonies — their religious feelings about the subject are strong … so it’s basically my idea that they won’t do any marriage at all,” Williams said. “Some people are just very against same-sex marriages, and I have to respect their reasons and their decisions.”
Kansas Advocate Stephanie Mott Shares Her Journey, Speaks Out On Transgender Issues People who are transgender—meaning that they identify with a gender different from their biological one—face a difficult road to self-acceptance. They endure bullying and higher rates of discrimination in housing and the job market. But less obvious is the psychological toll that being transgender takes. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, a startling 41 percent of transgender people in the United States have attempted to commit suicide. This statistic is part of the reason why Stephanie Mott, Executive Director of the Kansas Statewide Transgender Education Project is so involved in educating the public about transgender issues. KCUR’s Susan Wilson talked to Stephanie about her journey. “Something about having to hide who you are that innately tells you that there must be something wrong with it. And so there was this concept of believing that there was something wrong with me. I can tell you that as a child at 19 years old I spent hours sitting in the stairwell at our home looking through every volume of the Encyclopedia Britannica trying to find what was wrong with me, not something that described what was going on with me.”
Although there was opposition in St. Mary’s County, other municipalities and government offices across Maryland have embraced the change in the state’s laws concerning same-sex couples.
what he said about... “It is in every family. It is in every community. The momentum is clearly now in the direction in finding some way to … accommodate and deal with reality. And the reality is going to be that in a number of American states—and it will be more after 2014—gay relationships will be legal, period.” —Newt Gingrich, former U.S. House Speaker in an interview with The Huffington Post

Apply for an Aqua Foundation Scholarship now! The Aqua Foundation for Women’s 2013 scholarship cycle has just begun. Last year Aqua Foundation gave out 15 scholarships to undergraduates and graduate students, and they are anticipating awarding at least that many scholarships in 2013. The AFW awarded scholarships in the amount of $2,500 to $5,000 last year. Any woman who identifies as lesbian, bisexual, or transgender who is attending (or planning to attend) college in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach County and has lived in South Florida for a year or more is encouraged to apply by February 25, 2013. Scholarship funds are for tuition only and do not cover additional expenses such as books or travel. Applicants who are still in high school will of course be considered; they just must be accepted into a South Florida College prior to receiving funding. This year, for the first time, AFW will be offering a scholarship for LBT women with (physical) disabilities and a scholarship for LBT Latina women. Susan Soleman has generously donated the funding for the disabilities scholarship and anonymous donors have provided the funds for the Latina scholarship. For the Women with Disabilities Scholarship, applicant must have a physical disability. For the Latina Women Scholarship, applicant must be Latina. Once an applicant is accepted she will receive funding for her education, as well as the opportunity to work closely with a mentor who has been carefully matched with her. The mentoring program grows stronger with each year and many scholars say it is one of the most
important aspects of the scholarship program. Mentors are carefully matched each year with a scholar who they will work with. They are expected to maintain monthly communication with their mentee as well as attend quarterly gatherings of the mentors and scholars. A mentor provides encouragement, advice, and support to their mentee. To be eligible, an applicant must: 1.Be a resident of South Florida for at least one year 2.Attend college in South Florida* 3.Have a history of leadership and service in the community 4.Identify as an LBT woman Requirements for retaining the AFW scholarship: 1.Scholar will maintain a commitment to academic excellence and will maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher 2.Scholar will conduct herself in a professional manner at all times and serve as a spokesperson for AFW 3.Scholar will comply with the Mentor Program requirements 4.Scholar will release AFW to use her image for marketing purposes 5.Scholar will uphold the mission of AFW and act in a leadership capacity on behalf of lesbian, bisexual and transgender community If you qualify, begin the application process today so that you too may have the opportunity of becoming an Aqua scholar! Providing necessary tools for LBT women
LBT Women’s
Health Directory
LAUNCHED! “The creation of a health directory for LBT women has been discussed for many, many years in our community,” said Robin Schwartz, Executive Director of Aqua Foundation for Women. The Pride Center’s Tri-County LBT Women’s Health Initiative, funded by Aqua Foundation for Women, has developed an online, searchable database directory. The recently launched Initiative provides necessary tools for Florida LBT health consumers to access health care without fear and social stigma by accessing culturally competent providers. “Aqua Foundation for Women chose the Pride Center because of their standing in the community, dedicated management team and well thought out plan for creating the directory,” she added. The Initiative represents a true community collaboration. The program has been spearheaded by the Pride Center (located in Wilton Manors, FL) in collaboration with Women in Network (WIN), BLAST and SunServe to develop, organize and market the resource. “It’s been an honor to help organize this tri-county effort to provide this vital support resource for women’s health,” says Kristofer Fegenbush, Deputy Director of the Pride Center. “We’re collaborating with dynamic groups and leaders who have dedicated years of energy, passion and service to the health of LBT women. All of us are committed to improving access to healthcare for women. We all are thankful to Aqua for backing this vision with their dollars.”
“
Having a resource that
says to the community ‘these medical professionals understand and will treat you with care and respect’ speaks volumes...”
shep16HealthDirectory.indd 1
The online directory contains over 300 health care practitioners in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, including gynecologists, primary care physicians, and mental health professionals who work with LBT women patients. The Initiative established a vetting process to ensure that providers demonstrate standards of evident cultural competency. The user-friendly online directory also includes information on insurance accepted by providers, and free and low-cost health providers. “The response from the healthcare providers who have consented to be included in the Directory has been impressive,” said Ellen Slavin, LBT Women’s Health Initiative Coordinator. “When posed with the questions that gauge their LBT Cultural Competency many have mused that they really do need to change the way their questionnaires or medical history forms are worded. They didn’t realize that it’s important to include a category for patients who are “partnered” or in a domestic relationship or in a same-sex relationship.” “This directory is a vital need within the LBT women’s community,” according to Denise Spivak, President of Women in Network. “LBT women so often do not seek out medical care, for reasons that include discrimination, lack of understanding and lack of insurance. Having a resource that says to the community ‘these medical professionals understand and will treat you with care and respect’ speaks volumes and, hopefully, will make a profound difference in the way that LBT women view health care.” The Initiative has created a comprehensive and inclusive marketing plan to reach LBT women throughout South Florida to learn about and utilize the directory—including women who may not regularly access LBT publications, social groups, businesses or organizations. To visit the new directory or to submit your favorite LBT friendly doctor, go to www.lbthealth.org and start your search.

Doing the Wild Thing at Sawmill Campground
Planning on taking your favorite lady to an outdoor, adventurous location this coming year? She Magazine has located that very getaway for you, sitting smack in the middle of the great state of Florida. Set on 120 acres, allow us to introduce Sawmill Resort. It is a place where you definitely should prepare yourself for a wild ride in the countryside. It doesn’t matter if you’re a high maintenance femme or a sporty boi, this place is made for all types of women. Camping is what you first think of when you plan to take this trip, but if you open your mind, you will see that it has so much more to offer. The resort has many accommodations made available for you, no matter what your cup of tea is. You can pop up your own tent, park your RV, or even rent one of many beautiful cabins. Make sure you take a walk with your lover through the wilderness trail, heat up some S’mores on an open campfire, or play some volleyball poolside with your friends. At night, you can enjoy live music, a female impersonator show, and dancing to music from your favorite DJ. The resort is a place for laughter and/or romance, whatever your heart’s desire. Sawmill Resort is located on US Route 98 in Dade City, Florida and is surrounded by beautiful, tall cypress trees overlooking Ricki Lake and the Withlacoochee River. Although the resort has been in existence for many years, last year the community became a “Co-Op” for the many LGBT friendly residents of this community. The residents that live in this community are also the ones that run this resort, so they take pride in their own homes as well as the area dedicated to the public. If you take a stroll down the resident area, you will find flying rainbow flags, RVs with built-on decks, and modular homes with running waterfalls and immaculate landscapes. You might even want to make this place your new home. Many of the homes located in the resort are available for sale or rent throughout the year. The resort, which offers accommodations for all types of camping enthusiasts, includes a country store, clothing optional pool, a small restaurant/bar, a nightclub, a leather bar, an outdoor stage area for live bands, and much more. Electricity, water, and Wi-Fi are all available for your convenience. The resort is a member-only allowance and is secured by a monitored, gated post at the entrance. You must be 21 years or older to enter the grounds, but they do allow entrance of your family pets. Although many events throughout the previous years were focused on the men, the “Co-OP” voted to be more inviting to the women of the LGBT community this year. In 2013, Sawmill will begin an all women’s event every quarter. In February, Sawmill will present Chicks in the Sticks Weekend, bringing in live entertainment, host DJs, and many other fun activities for all to enjoy. Some well-known entertainment joining the festivities this year will be Halcyon, Karmic Tattoo, Kelly Neff, and DJ Pat Pat, just to name a few. For a list of all events for women, visit Sawmill’s website at www.flsawmill.com

carmen electra in 2013: “Keep on pursuing my dreams and achieving my goals.” Don’t act like you’ve never taken an extra ten seconds lingering on a picture of Carmen Electra, ladies. You know you have! Well, we had the chance to talk to Carmen, and I have a feeling we’re going to be seeing (and hearing) a lot more of her in 2013! This is our first 2013 gift to you. Lucky, lucky us! You have a new single out called “I Like It Loud” produced by Bill Hamel, which has such a great dance club sound to it. What’s been the response so far?
Really good, so far! I’m so lucky because this is a passion of mine, and I don’t think a lot of people realize my love for music. They didn’t get to see that side of me right away. But I started off in music, touring with Prince, recording on Paisley Park Records and ever since then, it’s always been my goal. Everything else has just been by chance- and I feel lucky in that way, too. I read that you were a Creative & Performing Arts student, so was music always in the cards for you?
Yeah, I went to the School of Creative & Performing Arts in Cincinnati, and that was great. I come from a family of music. My Dad plays guitar and my Mom was a back up singer. There was always music in the house - all kinds of music, like Stevie Wonder, Rick James and Led Zeppelin. We had a whole lot going on in my household! What does it take to get back into the recording studio after being gone for a while?
It was really by chance, again! I mean, I think about making music, every day, but I really wanted to have the right crew. I wanted to do it right. So, it took time for it to happen, but the experience has been so easy when we finally got started. As soon as I heard the track, I started singing it. The ball just started rolling. Everything fell into place. It felt like the time was perfect because it was all happening effortlessly. Some things have been a struggle for me, but this is just flowin’ nicely, so I’m goin’ with it! You’ve had a book published, you’ve got a fitness DVD out, you’ve starred in a Vegas Burlesque show, you’ve had TV & movie acting roles and you’re a singer. Where are you most comfortable?
from the cover with denise warner photos by jonathan clay harris
Oh, on stage. I feel the most comfortable on stage. I studied as a dancer and trained most of my life. To be honest with you, I wanted to be a back up dancer. That was my dream - to be a back up dancer for Janet Jackson or Paula Abdul. At the time, that’s what I headed to L.A. to do. But every time I would meet someone they would say, “Why don’t you go out for this role or go to this audition?” and they would say “Try singing,” so I would, and I’ve just been really lucky. Can you tell me anything about the film “Oy Vey, My Son is Gay!” Sounds fabulous!
Yes! It was an indie film I shot - and it has a really good message, because in some families it can be difficult to open up, come out and talk about it. So, in this movie, the mother didn’t want to believe her son was gay, she was ignoring all the signs, and finally my character just breaks it down for her. There you have “Oy Vey! My Son is Gay!” You’ve always had a big LGBT following and probably a lot more “L” following you after showing up at the Dinah with Joan Jett back in 07. How do you think that’s impacted your career?
It’s amazing! It’s been really cool, and you know I’ve always connected with the guys, but around that time, I really started to connect with women, too. I mean, I really connect with women. It’s just

of your best fitness tips as we roll into the New Year?
Aside from hearing that you’re a big flirt, what’s the most important thing you would like the lesbian community to know about Carmen Electra?
Well, honestly, I just started going back to the gym again. I get really bored with working out, so I have to constantly switch it up! I go through phases. I love it, I take time off, I love it, I’m over it and I eat! I love to eat, especially over the holidays, but when I have things coming up, I know I have to get back at it, and I am. You have to find a balance, I guess.
How much I support them. I’m on their team. I believe that if two people love each other, they should be able to get married. It’s SO unfair. Love is love. It’s the most powerful thing in the world and I just don’t understand why anyone would want to stop that or not allow it to blossom. I’ve always been very open-minded and welI, I just love my girls. How did you spend the holidays?
(laughs) We like to call it “Our Holidays for the Misfits” – for instance, my friend’s family doesn’t celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas, so she comes over, and my family is in Ohio, so I’m in L.A. pretty much by myself- so I invite all my friends over and we just have a blast! I have friends who’ll do all the cooking, and they love it! We have the music on. It’s great having everyone over and just hanging out, eating, relaxing and having fun. You’ve got the body most of us dream about. What are some
Your video for “I Like It Loud” comes out this month, right?
Yeah! I’m so excited about it! It’s going to be kind of like “A Day in the Life”- what a day is like for me, all shot in New York City, which I love. It’s also going to show a little bit of the darker side, like the underground club scene. It’s all very exciting and going to be so fun! What would you like to see happen for you in 2013? Feels like a big year, doesn’t it?
Oh, wow! I would love to have a #1 single, have people really like my album, and to keep on pursuing my dreams and achieving my goals. I really believe anything is possible, especially with the support of my fans. I know I can do it.

(Hard) Rocks
Vallarta
april 2013
Sweet Travel is at it again, hosting yet another delicious lesbian getaway right when the April showers start and you’re ready for some sunshine. Swarms of women will be heading to the lusciously remodeled Hard Rock Vallarta from April 7-14, 2013, to take in the scenery, enjoy the excellent-as-always entertainment offered up by Sweet’s scheduled talent, and maybe do some good in the community while they’re away. The Hard Rock Vallarta itself is a perfect place to unleash your inner rock star (or, maybe, iconic folk singer) with its amazing double jacuzzis, spectacular beach views, and, oh, liquor dispensers in your room. Sounds like a win-win-win.
For the past five years, Mexico has warmly welcomed Sweet, and, after 2011’s Mexican Riviera Cruise, CEO Shannon Wentworth was thrilled to return to the area. The Hard Rock Vallarta, formerly Vallarta Palace, is a dream resort located right on the gorgeous Bahia de Banderas beaches, a nursing spot for humpback whales (although the trip will fall just after the season), and a treasure trove of sea turtles. Nuevo Vallarta is just north of the coast of Puerto Vallarta, a top LGBT travel destination. With nearly 350 rooms, a swim-up bar, luxe spas, beautiful pools, and a selection of fabulous on-site restaurants, who needs Spring Break in Florida? Save your money for Sweet. For the first time since 2010, Sweet will be bringing along some big time musicians with singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, folk-pop artist Edie Carey, Nashville’s “I Didn’t Just Kiss Her” singer Jen Foster, and sweetheart of modern Americana Natalia Zukerman. Need a good laugh? Grab a front row seat to see the legendary Carol Leifer, comedian and award-winning comedy writer (Seinfeld and Modern Family), comedian Shann Carr, who is rumored to have headlined more gay men’s cruises than any woman anywhere, and the hysterical Jennie McNulty. Vacation highlights aside, traveling with Sweet has big philanthropic perks. Every trip offers Sweeties, the pet name for travelers on Sweet vacations, the opportunity to do some good wherever they are. From hosting adoption events at local shelters to visiting schools or to beach cleanups, if you have a little extra room in your heart, Sweet is happy to indulge your need to save the world. “It’s truly amazing—the spirit of community generated by our guests,” Wentworth said. If you would rather just lounge by the pool, partake in Sweet’s signature pink party, or head off on a sport fishing excursion, go for it. You’re doing your part just by being on the trip: Sweet donates to a number of LGBT-related causes and foundations, community and health centers. Booking a vacation with Sweet can be your little way of helping out. On top of all that, Sweet organizes a day-by-day itinerary, packed with opportunities to meet new people, network, dance, zen out, or get active. Past activities have included motorcycle tours, canoeing, snorkeling and sailing, to name a few. If you’ve run out of beach reads, it’s time to partake in what Sweet has to offer and get to be part of their legendarily great community. If it sounds too good to be true, well, it isn’t. Think money will get in the way? Think again. Sweet offers a legitimately transparent payment plan, so you can put a little toward your trip every month. Don’t have someone to go with? Sweet thought of that too and is happy to match you up with a roommate. “Weeks after returning home I still feel the glow of my Sweet travel—a combination of sun, fun, friends, pampering, community and connection,” says Rebecca Rolfe, director of the San Francisco LGBT center. A Sweetie named Janice adds, “I’ve never encountered a group of more down-to-earth, good-hearted and fun people in my life and no drama amongst 300-plus lesbians.” You may have to try it to believe it. Sweet will be heading to Hard Rock Vallarta in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico on April 7-14, 2013. www.discoversweet.com/sweet-hard-rock-vallarta

Are you one of the thousands of people whose number one New Year’s Resolution is to lose weight and/or get fit, let’s say, as of yesterday? Perhaps you are just wanting to change your eating habits? The real question is...Are you one of the few who are truly committed and determined to coming through the finish line, celebrating your victory after meeting most of your short and long-term goals, regardless of setbacks? If you answered “yes” to all questions, this article is for you. If you answered “no,” this is also for you as you can put to practice one or some of these tips. We recently spoke to Los Angeles’ lesbian celebrity trainer Shawnee Harkins, who you saw on our April 2009 cover, and remember from reality show The Hydra Executives and Dr. Phil’s “Ultimate Weight Loss Race” segment. We also spoke to San Francisco’s
lesbian celebrity trainer and raw/vegan chef Briana Stockton, who was featured in our January 2010 cover, and you must remember from Bravo’s Work Out as Jackie Warner’s then girlfriend. Their words of wisdom on exercisie and nutrition will give you that final push to motivate you to begin a new lifestyle and create your new, healthier self!
>> SHAWNEE HARKINS This must be the busiest time for you as a nutritionist and trainer. When someone comes to you for help, how do you know that person is really committed, motivated and ready to succeed at feeling and looking better?
This is the busiest time of the year, and many people get that “Holiday Fitness Bug.” When a

potential client comes to me whether they are serious or not yet ready, there are a few things I ask and observe in our fitness and nutrition assessment. I’m talking and listening to them. I want to hear how much they want to change their unhealthy lifestyle. How do you motivate your clients to keep up with their program?
I motivate my clients by being their biggest fan. I know clients are going to slip, so I allow cheat meals or a cheat day in their fitness and nutrition program. They should have one day off on a weekly basis from exercise to recover for their mind and bodies. When I see a client losing their motivation, I pull out my famous weight vest that can hold up to 50 pounds and remind them of how much they weighed and give them props on how much they’ve lost. When not joining a gym, how should

we choose our workout?
Does a good sweating session necessarily mean a good workout?
No, it does not. The intensity and length of time in your exercise session is what determines caloric burn, whether in a cold or warm climate, hence a good workout. How often should we increase the level of workout, assuming one is just walking/jogging?
After repeated movements in the muscles and cardiovascular input and output, your body begins to acclimate itself. If there are no injuries, adjust your walking or jogging every two weeks. If you do have discomfort and need to take your cardiovascular program a little slower, I suggest adjusting walking or jogging every four weeks. I see that you are offering online training on your website. Is that a customized service you make available?
There are four services I will be offering, plus a free subscription to my weekly fitness newsletter. 1- Real Time Training: a completely interactive between myself and the client. 2- Toned Team: VIP membership to my online articles, recipes, exercise and nutrition videos and Q&A platform. 3- Online Personal Training: a customized personal training fitness program and/or nutrition program, plus consulting. 4- The Fit Store: nutrition and fitness products. Exercising and good nutrition go hand-in-hand. What are the elements we must include in our daily diet, and should we watch the amount we are eating, even though it is “healthy”?
Proper nutrition can expedite the process of losing body fat, gaining muscle and can also improve health and enhance performance. The American College of Sports Medicine
(ACSM) recommends no less than 1,200 calories per day for women or 1,800 calories for men. At each meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner, you will want to include protein, healthy carbohydrate and healthy fat. Rule of thumb, eat until you are satisfied. Is it ok to go off the new eating habits for a day or two with the idea to always get back on track?
“Embrace the healthy changes you are about to embark on. Leave the excuses, bad habits and obstacles at the door. Then the physical changes happen naturally.
“
You can set yourself up at home with the essential fitness equipment. I recommend a cardiovascular machines like a treadmill, elliptical, recumbent bike, spin bike, road bike and jump rope. I recommend an adjustable bench that offers a chest press component and free weights, commonly known as dumbbells, for strength training. I recommend purchasing an exercise ball, medicine ball, bands, and a mat that provides your spine with plenty of support. For sports, agility and coordination training, I recommend single cones, an agility ladder and hurdles to take your performance to the next level. Stretching is vital for overall flexibility, and I recommended before, during and after exercise.
If a client has immediate fat loss goals, I do would not feel comfortable allowing them to have a full day or two days off from their healthy food choices. If they are successfully working towards their goal, I will allow a “cheat meal” to satisfy my client’s palate.
see the positive changes and growth with my personal clients, but it won’t stop there because now I know I can contribute healthy fitness programs to the masses. This has been a dream of mine, and now I get to see it unfold.
Most people think that eating less or once a day will help them lose weight, when it is not the case.
What can you tell our readers about making their goals realistic so they can keep up with it?
Eating an unsafe amount of calories or once a day will cause the body to store fat, thinking it is starving. Eat five to six meals daily, including breakfast, healthy snack, lunch, healthy snack, dinner and a protein shake. Do not skip breakfast no matter how fast you dash off to work. Shop for organic and colorful fresh natural foods, i.e vegetables and fruit, and include as much as you can in your diet.
I definitely recommend making short-term and long-terms goals, achieving them are huge motivators for the mind and spirit. Discussing your goals with a fitness professional will decipher between a realistic or outrageous goal. Another suggestion, one I use strongly, is creating your support team. Embrace the healthy changes you are about to embark on. Leave the excuses, bad habits and obstacles at the door. Then the physical changes happen naturally.
How important is water intake?
Drinking water is just as important as breathing air. Water improves metabolic functions, liver function, endocrine gland function, aids in the action of burning fat and overall hydration. Typical water intake are 96 ounces (three quarts) per day. Increase water intake of 8oz. for every 25 pounds a person holds above healthy weight. Do remember water intake should increase when engaging in exercise. What are your expectations for 2013?
My expectations for 2013 are to continue to
>> briana stockton You are not only a trainer but a raw/ vegan chef. What does that mean, and what kind of food are we talking about? Sounds like too many vegetables!
[Laughs] Yes. There are a lot of vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. Raw food is food in its purest and most natural form. Raw food
SHE - 27 - 01/13

What are the main health benefits of the raw food diet?
Living enzymes. Enzymes are responsible for every chemical reaction in each and every cell of your body. You would not be able to lift even a finger without the presence of an enzyme. Enzymes are necessary for digestion, breaking down the food we eat, absorbing it, and essential for our bodies’ vitality. Cooking food destroys its natural enzymes. Raw food enhances your health and weight loss, enhances your natural beauty with a bright glow, and slows down the aging process. Keeping up with balanced eating habits is probably the hardest part. How do you motivate your clients to keep up with the program?
I try to be very realistic and take them through two-week steps of changing their eating habits. For example, the first two weeks I want them to focus on cutting out dairy and soy and to eat with proper food combining. The next two weeks, I introduce some raw food into their life and want them to eat only fruit, green shakes, juice or raw protein shakes in the morning before noon. After noon, I have them eat raw all day until dinner, which can then be a cooked meal. From there, every two weeks we simplify their diet more. Most people feel so amazing and see such a drastic change from just taking the dairy and soy out, they are excited to experiment with the rest.
How often should we increase the level of workout, assuming one is just walking/jogging?
Briana: Walking and jogging can be a great and smart start. The way you will get the most benefits from either is interval training. Changing the pace and time will be most effective. For example: 3-min. run/1-min. jog/1-min. walk/repeat • 5-min. run/5-min. walk/repeat • 4-min. run/1-min. walk/repeat • 2-min. run/1-min. sprint/repeat • 1-min. sprint/1min. walk/repeat. Complete every interval for 40 mins. for two weeks, then 1 hour for the next two, and 30 min. for the week after. What elements we must include in our daily diet, and should we watch the amount we are eating, even though it is “healthy”?
Some people think once they start exercising and working out hard they can eat whatever they want. Really, it is 90% nutrition and 10% exercise. The great benefit of exercise is that it helps you want to eat healthier. When you start to eat healthier and continue to exercise, you may notice you naturally crave good nutritional food. Overeating is more of a concern while eating cooked and processed food. You don’t get the nutrients your body needs from cooked food, so your brain believes it is still hungry. You continue eating until you realize how uncomfortable and tired you are. Since I started eating raw, I stopped caring about the fat or sugar and have enjoyed food so much more. Try drinking some water, and remind yourself cravings only last 7 min. Most people think that eating less or once a day will help them lose weight when it is not the case.
You want to eat for fuel. Remember, being overweight can often stem from your digestive track and colon. When you eat cooked food, and especially processed food, your body
does not recognize it, and it takes longer to digest. I eat at least 10-12 bananas a day, amongst other fruits and raw vegetables. If I were going to choose to eat a cooked meal, it would definitely be for dinner so that my body would have more hours to digest it. How important is water intake?
However, the amount of water one needs depends on what they are eating. Your body consists of more than 70% water. Coconut water is also a top component of hydrating yourself. The reason we have been taught to drink at least 8 cups of water a day is because of the amount of dead, unprocessed food that the average person consumes. Most days, I just drink water during my workout, and the rest of my fluids are coconut water or fresh juices. What are you up to and what are your expectations for 2013?
I am looking forward to 2013 and for the Year of the Snake. The snake is considered a symbol of luck. I have many exciting health, wellness and body nourishing projects in development. I am also starting the countdown to The Dinah 2013! What can you tell our readers about making their goals realistic so they can keep up with it?
Make the short-term goals in order to have more fun achieving the long-term goals. Setting a goal and achieving it is such a powerful feeling. Continue to work on yourself and health. You also make the decisions on how you perform with your body. I strongly recommend getting the support and guidance of a trainer. The longer you wait, the easier it is to stay the same and not move on to healthier changes. Make today the start of better health, and commit to that moment. Become best friends with yourself. Your body is a very powerful machine. Fine-tune it.
“
is prepared not cooked. Vegan can be raw or cooked. I eat 95% raw. I am not 100% vegan, as I do still eat sushi. People ask, if I am only eating sashimi, isn’t that considered raw? No. It is not. Eating raw also means no animal products, and, yes, sashimi is uncooked raw fish but is definitely still an animal product. Raw includes pasta dishes, creamy soups, thick tasty smoothies, delicious pies and cakes, easy salads and a lot of chocolate.
“it is 90% nutrition and 10% exercise... When you start to eat healthier and continue to exercise, you may notice you naturally crave good nutritional food. SHE - 28 - 01/13

“My hope for 2013 is that the LGBT community will gain full equality under the law in all 50 states. My expectation is that we will see Marriage Equality on a Federal level in this next year. I fully expect the Supreme Court to find that marriage rights are basic human rights. I feel our forefathers had the foresight to make room in the US Constitution for all citizens and the Supreme Court will agree.” — Cathy Marino-Thomas, Co-President at Marriage Equality USA (New York, NY) “We have more allies than ever and we have more LGBT people in positions of influence; both of which will allow us to take the positive movement in 2013. I’m particularly excited about the LBT women in South Florida. Women who traditionally have lead a more secluded life outside of the LGBT community are now getting involved, financially giving and volunteering at higher rates. Our community is definitely better off when women join the men in leadership and supporting what matters.” —Robin Schwartz, Executive Director at Aqua Foundation for Women (Miami, FL) “As a parent to three boys I hope we will see wins for marriage equality at the Supreme Court, more opportunities for LGBT people to adopt and foster through passage of the Every Child Deserves a Family Act and the passage of comprehensive immigration reform. I hope as a nation we see a sea change in the way we address and combat violence so that every person can live in safety and raise our children
to fully access the American dream. “ —Jennifer Chrisler, Executive Director at Family Equality Council (Boston, MA) “In 2013 we have unprecedented opportunities. With investment of time, resources and willingness we will see even more victories on the local level and significant progress statewide when it comes to ending discrimination against the LGBT community. The presence of out legislators will have a positive impact on the culture in Tallahassee at a time when Democrats are standing stronger on our issues than ever before and Republican allies are stepping forward in greater numbers. The biggest shift will come from the fact that straight people see this as their fight for the values of equality and fairness.” —Nadine Smith, Executive Director at Equality Florida (St Petersburg, FL) “In 2013, I hope we will finally defeat DOMA and Prop 8, enact more legal protections for LGBT people at work and in school, add more states where we have the freedom to marry, and work to end the violence against LGBT youth and adults. We have a long list of challenges in 2013 and beyond—but, working together, we can do it!” —Fran Goldstein, Deputy Director at Lambda Legal (New York, NY) “For 2013, I would like to finalize an agenda item that I introduced to the Commission in regards to domestic partners benefits.
I am also currently working closely with the Miami Beach LGBT Business Enhancement Committee in hosting a ‘Doing Business in Miami Beach Symposium 2013. Also, I am an honorary Board member of the Miami Beach-Miami Sports & Cultural League, the 13-member volunteer coalition that entered the bid on behalf of the city to host the 2017 WorldOut Games in Miami Beach. I look forward to continue to work closely for the betterment of Miami Beach.” —Michael Góngora, Vice Mayor (Miami Beach, FL) “I’m optimistic that we will see ENDA pass. This critical legislation would prohibit discrimination in hiring on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. I’m also hopeful that the Supreme Court will stand on the right of history with the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. We have to own our power as a community, continue to mobilize and maintain the momentum we’ve built. —Sharon J. Lettman-Hicks, Executive Director/ CEO at National Black Justice Coalition (Washington, D.C.) “I look forward to the day when same-sex couples can enjoy the same benefits provided to everyone else. This year the Center will continue to grow and evaluate the needs of our community and how we can fill that need, including providing a safe and welcoming space to our transgender community.” —Robert Boo, CEO at The Pride Center at Equality Park (Wilton Manors, FL)

on the shelves The holidays—frequently a time of overindulgence and resolutions about losing pounds—can be difficult for many that struggle with weight issues and body image. Abigail Saguy is the author of the brand new released book What’s Wrong with Fat?, which questions whether there really is an obesity crisis in the U.S. and calls for a reframing of our national dialogue on fatness. “In recent years, the ‘obesity epidemic’ has emerged as a top public health concern in the United States and abroad. Scholars, journalists and politicians alike are scrambling to find answers. What or who is responsible for this crisis, and what can be done to stop it? In contrast, in my book, I argue that these fraught debates obscure more important sociological questions: How has fatness come to be understood as a public health crisis at all? Why has the view of fatness as a medical problem and public health crisis come to dominate more positive framings of weight—as consistent with health, beauty or a legitimate rights claim—in public discourse? Why are heavy individuals singled out for blame? And what are the consequences of understanding weight in these ways?,” said Saguy, Associate Professor of Sociology and of Gender Studies at UCLA.

obesity itself The United States, we are told, is facing an obesity epidemic, a “battle of the bulge” of not just national but global proportions that requires drastic and immediate action. Experts in the media, medical science and government alike are scrambling to find answers. What or who is responsible for this fat crisis, and what can we do to stop it? What’s Wrong with Fat? presents each of the various ways in which fat is understood in America today, examining the implications of understanding fatness as a health risk, disease and epidemic and revealing why we’ve come to understand the issue in these terms, despite considerable scientific uncertainty and debate. Saguy shows how debates over the relationship between body size and health risks take place within a larger, though often invisible, contest over whether we should understand fatness as obesity at all. Moreover, she reveals that public discussions of the “obesity crisis” do more harm than good, leading to bullying, weight-based discrimination and misdiagnoses. Showing that the medical framing of fat is literally making us sick, What’s Wrong with Fat? provides a crucial corrective to our society’s misplaced obsession with weight. The book systematically examines how the medical profession, researchers, corporate-sponsored associations and the mass media have transformed fatness into an international public health crisis.
