DIRECTOR’S CHAIR It took me a few weeks to be able to watch the last few episodes of Grey’s Anatomy this season. Part of it was just life keeping me from having the time and part of it was just not wanting to see the episode that got so many fans in a complete uproar. Finally though, I gave in. I watched, fully focused on the television, knowing Derek was going to die, yet still knocked clean off my rocker when the crash occurred and I still thought it might not really happen. But I watched. Intently. I didn’t know why at the time, but it was definitely more intently than I would normally have done. As the cascade of memorial moments passed before Meredith’s eyes. As the flashbacks of the carousel and her mother Ellis’ voice saying, “The carousel never stops turning,” played over and over again. I watched. And when it was over, I remembered thinking, “I don’t get it.” I didn’t get it. As a child, I was kept away from things like terminal illness and death. My mother always said that I didn’t need to see and remember people that way. She felt it would be better for me to not see and be able to only remember people when they were well and happy. Later in life, I heard about a Bible story in which a man was told that because he had lived a good life, he would not see death. Some interpreted it as meaning he would not die, but others interpreted it as he never saw death. Somehow, this stuck for me and I came to believe that as long as I use my powers for good, my reward from God is that I will not have to see death. Point to all this being, my experience with things like terminal illness and death is extremely limited, almost non-existent. And because I have been kept from it for so long, I am not very good at understanding or dealing with it. So no, I didn’t get it. And to a certain extent, I think I was okay with that. Two days later, I’m sitting in a restaurant, having lunch with my girl, mom and the little one, when I get a frantic text from a friend in London, asking me if what it says on Facebook about our mutual good friend is true…is she really gone? I go her profile page. I see post after post of people saying how shocked they are. Then I see the post. The post. The one from her girlfriend saying that our dear, dear friend is gone—shockingly, out of nowhere, we-just-spoke-with-her-36 hours-ago kind of shockingly gone. Suddenly, I am flooded with images. An unstoppable cascade of memories of all the moments we shared is playing in my head. From the moment we met through years of friendship, I saw them all, and for me, time had completely stopped. Flooded with memories at the same time as calls and texts from others in our tight group of friends, my world had come to a complete standstill. There were 18 of us. If you saw the photo of us all together, you would think, “I hope there isn’t anyone out there with a red sharpie.” I know I thought it and then laughed aloud. Think the Real Housewives of The LGBT Community, but with much less fighting and drink throwing and exponentially more laughter. Through scavenger hunts, renaissance festivals, holidays, engagements, birthdays, graduations, last minute moves across the county, the country and the world, bad break-ups, illnesses—the good, the bad and the seriously ugly—we were there for and with each other. And now, in an instant, one of us was gone. I look around the restaurant. People are coming in, going out, getting food, walking around. The little one is playing with her straw. My mom and girl are chatting away. The world is moving around me like nothing has happened. And suddenly, I hear Ellis Grey’s voice in my head say, “The carousel never stops turning.” It was a full week before it really sunk in. On some level, I think I was hoping it didn’t really happen, like maybe it was just some kind of sick joke or I’d wake up and realize it was all just a dream. I just could not wrap my head around it really being true. I had so many questions, but realized that my lack of experience made me ill-equipped to ask them and even less equipped to hear the answers. So, like all the other times that a death occurred, I resigned myself to just not knowing. The only thing that is different is that now, I get it. Hilary Duff’s fifth studio album Breathe In. Breathe Out. drops on June 16. Fans of the former Disney star will enjoy this latest effort, the first since 2007’s Dignity. The 12-track album includes three singles: the retro-bubblegum sound of “Chasing the Sun,” the pop-twangy “All About You” and the impassioned “Spark.” Breathe In. THE VOICE’S MEGHAN LINSEY ANNOUNCED AS PERFORMER AT GLAAD’S CONCERT FOR LOVE AND ACCEPTANCE Meghan Linsey, the runner up on this season of NBC’s The Voice, has joined the lineup for the first Concert for Love and Acceptance, presented by Grammy-nominated country singer Ty Herndon and GLAAD. Linsey joins the previously announced Chris Carmack from ABC’s Nashville, Tiffany, Antigone Rising, Melinda Doolittle, Billy Gilman, Jamie O’Neal and more. KEY WEST INSTALLS PERMANENT RAINBOW CROSSWALKS JUST IN TIME FOR PRIDE FESTIVITIES The City of Key West installed four permanent rainbow crosswalks on May 28th at the intersection of Duval and Petronia streets, in the heart of the island’s LGBT entertainment district. It’s the first time in Florida that all four corners of an intersection have been connected with rainbow crosswalks. Spanning all four corners of the intersection, the crosswalks feature bands of all six colors of the rainbow flag, an internationally recognized symbol of gay and lesbian unity. “Key West is very happy to be putting in the first thermoplastic permanent rainbow crosswalks in the state of Florida,” said Mayor Craig Cates. “It means so much to Key West to show our diversity, and also it goes perfectly with our ‘One Human Family’ motto.”
Spearheaded by the city and the Key West Business Guild, the rainbow crosswalks are composed of pre-formed thermoplastic color blocks alternating with white stripes. After the
blocks were laid on the street by the city’s Community Services Department workers, they were heat-treated with propane torches to affix the colors permanently on the pavement.
The rainbow crosswalks are the latest manifestation of Key West’s longstanding embrace of diversity. “One Human Family” was adopted as the city’s official philosophy in 2000, proclaiming equality and acceptance for everyone, and the island is internationally known as a leading LGBT vacation destination. “Accepting diversity has been going on for generations in Key West, mainly starting back when Key West was an island with no access but boats,” said Cates. “Everybody learned to live together, accept one another, so that has continued on through generations and is very evident today.” While the rainbow crosswalks opened to traffic early Thursday afternoon, their official debut is scheduled Wednesday, June 10, kicking off the June 10-14 Key West Pride festivities.
WORLDPRIDE MADRID 2017 IS THE GREAT GLOBAL LGBTIQ PRIDE FESTIVAL 2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the first LGBTIQ pride parades in Spain, and what a better way to celebrate than by having Madrid host WorldPride Madrid 2017, taking place June 23 - July 2nd. Madrid Pride is one of the largest prides in the world with nearly 2,000,000 participants and a demonstration with about 1,000,000 attendees. With the theme: Viva La Vida, WorldPride Madrid 2017 is the great global LGBTIQ Pride festival to be held in the neighborhood of Chueca and some of the main streets of Madrid. Legally… lesbian? Well, not exactly. To the delight of their queer-lady fans, Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara may kiss up on each other, but it’s all just part of their newly released film Hot Pursuit. In the film, Witherspoon portrays Officer Cooper, a bythe-books cop assigned to protect the ultrafashionable widow of a drug dealer (Vergara of Modern Family)—at one point faking lesbian to escape a potentially sketchy situation. This isn’t Witherspoon’s first on-screen kiss with another woman, of course. And even though the Oscar-winning actress couldn’t recall her pre-fame woman-on-woman debut during our interview—1996’s Freeway, when

she and Brittany Murphy made out—how could we forget? “I don’t think I’ve kissed another girl on screen,” Reese says, as we’re asked to move onto the next question. Dealing with homosexuality in comedy can be delicate and some people take offense to pseudo lesbianism. As actors, how do you know when not to go too far? Is there a “too far”?
Reese: I think gay people are able to play
straight roles; straight people are able to play gay roles. The whole point of being an actor is to transform. If people don’t understand that we need to be malleable in our sexuality, then I think they need to lighten up. Sofia, you’re on a gay-loved TV show. Reese, you famously taught us the “bend-and-snap.” Looking back, when were you both first aware that you had a gay and lesbian following?
Reese: For me, probably Legally Blonde or Cruel Intentions. Sofia: I’ve never really thought about it. I’ve always had a lot of gay friends as very close friends. I don’t know! My (Modern Family)

Sofia: Oh, it was half and half. Reese: Yeah, it was in the script, and then Sofia decided she’d yank my ponytail. Sofia: Yeah, she smelled very good!

Reese: Anything where two women are relating to each other—and we’re the leads of

But it’s actually a really exciting summer for women’s films with Pitch Perfect 2, directed by a woman (Elizabeth Banks), Spy with Melissa McCarthy and Trainwreck with Amy Schumer. Last summer was not good for women’s films. I mean, I kept going, “What am I gonna see this
favorite scenes, because to see her like that was so odd. I wasn’t prepared. She suddenly showed up like that to the set and it was so hilarious. I mean, if you see the movie, at the end there are some bloopers of me not being able to control myself. Reese: Because she thought I was hot. Sofia: No. I thought you looked ridiculous!
I don’t have to tell you that your makeout scene in Hot Pursuit is already getting a lot of lesbian buzz. How accustomed are you to attention from lesbians at this point in your career?
Reese: I have a ton of lesbian friends. I think any kind of woman who relates to us or enjoys the movie—that’s awesome! Sofia: Half of the time I don’t know if they’re lesbian. It’s just normal. It’s not like they’re like, “Hi, I am a lesbian and I am a fan!” Reese: (Laughs) The whole movie is: It doesn’t matter where you’re from, what your sexual orientation is, what you do for a living, what your ethnicity is—women are women, and we all have a lot in common. I’ve loved watching the evolution of female actors in the action genre. How does it feel being a part of “the girls can be just as bad as boys” movement in Hollywood?

Independence Day 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of a march to the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, one of the earliest known forms of LGBT Civil Rights actions in America. On July 4, 1965, a group of proud activists from around the country decided to protest for LBGT equality in front of Independence Hall. Each July 4th for the following three years, the protest would continue. The Philadelphia protests ignited the gay rights movement and 50 years of milestones, including the Stonewall Riots in Greenwich Village in 1969, the 1979 National March on Washington, and in 2004, the groundbreaking legislation enacted by the state of Massachusetts to legalize same sex marriage, with the Town Clerk performing first weddings on the steps of Provincetown Town Hall. Massachusetts, in particular Provincetown, the quaint village at the tip of Cape Cod, has a reputation for being first. Ptown, as the locals call it, was the first destination for people in search of liberty and freedom when the Pilgrims first landed there in1620 and inked the Mayflower Compact in Provinc-
etown Harbor. Three centuries later, freedom of expression and tolerance for diversity drew
artists to Ptown in the first years of the 20th century. Shortly thereafter, the LGBT community settled in Ptown where broad acceptance and living without fear of judgment led to the first incidence of progress for LGBT civil rights in U.S. history. Embedded in the history of Ptown are the remarkable women who led cultural, artistic, literary and modern family achievements. The town celebrates the community of women everyday and in every way, as gender-equity is woven into the spirit and leadership of Cape Cod’s most favorite place for visitors. Ptown has become a women’s destination for all seasons, but this summer, in celebration of 50 years of LGBT rights, anticipation has heightened for the 2015 schedule of events, including the Memorial Day romp of young women and the post holiday Women of Color Weekend, June 4-7, 2015, which offers the only singles gathering specifically for women of color. estuvo casado antes de ser ordenado y que años más tarde, su hijo legitimo, se convertiría en el Papa #58... Ya sabemos que tanto la religión, como la política, generan gran polémica y personalmente me atrae bastante. Pero me atrae, más allá de mi propia fe, por las respuestas que siguen sin tener respuesta. Buscando en Youtube.com, me encontré con cualquier tipo de video sobre la “verdadera” razón por la cual el Papa Benedicto XVI renunció a su puesto. Muchos coincidían con una “supuesta” orden de arresto por parte de países Europeos por malversación de dinero del banco del Vaticano, así como una confiscación de los bienes del Vaticano. Según decía el narrador, la renuncia fue parte del arreglo para que eso no se llevara a cabo. Si es verdad o no, realmente no lo sé; sólo me queda escuchar, leer y sacar mis propias conclusiones. Entrando a la enciclopedia libre y virtual que es Wikipedia.org, decidí buscar la historia de los 265 Papas anteriores al presente. Encontré la lista de todos los Papas. Esta lista corresponde a la que aparece en el Anuario Pontificio. “El Anuario Pontificio es una publicación anual que recoge, junto al listado histórico y oficial de todos los Papas que han gobernado la Iglesia Católica desde San Pedro… A lo largo de la historia ha habido 264 Papas y 266 papados reconocidos oficialmente por la Iglesia católica, esto se debe a que Benedicto IX accedió en tres ocasiones al papado. De entre todos los papas, 42 han ejercido el pontificado durante menos de un año y 10 lo han ejercido durante más de 20 años. El Papa con el pontificado más largo fue Pío IX (1846-1878) que fue Papa durante 31 años, 7 meses y 23 días.El papa con el pontificado más corto fue Urbano VII (15-27 de septiembre de 1590), que lo ejerció durante 13 días”. Al leer la lista y los comentarios me enteré que el Papa Hormisdas (#52) estuvo casado antes de ser ordenado y que años más tarde, su hijo legitimo, se convertiría en el Papa #58, Silverio. Curiosamente, hubo un Papa electo que no llegó a ser ordenado como tal, ya que falleció repentinamente a causa de un ataque de apoplejía 3 días después de su elección en el año 752, Esteban II quien hubiese sido el Papa #92. Decidí buscar un poco sobre el celibato, una regla obligatoria para los sacerdotes de la Iglesia Católica, pero no algo por lo que se rige la Iglesia Católica Oriental. Además, el tener familia es algo que les está permitido a los sacerdotes de otras religiones que desean unirse
y servir como sacerdotes dentro de la Iglesia Católica; algo que a me parece poco justo. Pero, ¿sería justo adjudicarle a esta promesa los miles de casos de pedofilia que siguen dentro de la Iglesia y están sin resolver? Tampoco creo que sea la respuesta, de ser así, no existieran hombres (en su gran mayoría) heterosexuales que abusen de niños. “En 2011 se publicó un estudio del John Jay College of Criminal Justice en el que se cifra en 4.392 el número de sacerdotes católicos acusados de abusos sexuales a menores en EE.UU. desde 1950 hasta 2002, de un total de 109.694 sacerdotes católicos que han servido en ese país durante ese periodo de tiempo”, dice una de las páginas de Wikipedia. Personalmente creo que sería una opción que la Iglesia debería de tomar. Existen otras religiones que tienen pastores que mantienen sus familias e igualmente sirven a Dios. ¿Por qué no? Buscando un poco la historia del celibato encontré otro portal de Internet, futurechurch.org que tiene información en español sobre “Historia del Celibato en la Iglesia Católica”. Entre otros, ofrecen una lista de información relacionada al celibato desde el siglo I al XX; Papas que fueron casados; Papas que fueron hijos de otros Papas u otros miembros de clero y aquellos que tuvieron hijos ilegítimos. En un artículo de archivo de El País, un diario de España, decía: “Un jesuita profesor de la Universidad de Harvard, el P. Fischler, descubrió que el 92% del clero norteamericano pedía que pudiera elegir el sacerdote libremente ser casado o soltero. Y un

sacerdote y psicoterapeuta, el P. Sipe, encontró que sólo el 2% de ese clero cumple el celibato, el 47% lo cumple relativamente y el 31,5% vive una relación sexual, de los cuales el tercio tiene relaciones homosexuales.” Definitivamente la historia ofrece datos inimaginables, sencillamente hay que escarbar. Así es que te invito a que busques, que te preguntes. Aclaro, mis preguntas no tienen absolutamente nada que ver con mi fe en Dios, en sus enseñanzas. Sólo que me es muy difícil pensar que si Jesús entrase hoy a la basílica de San Pedro estaría contento al ver tanto lujo; más bien pienso que los sacaría de la Iglesia como hizo con los mercaderes del templo en Jerusalén al llegar la época de Pascua..

noticias Indignación por la situación de la comunidad LGTB en Perú Asesinatos y violencia familiar principalmente a adolescentes son algunos de los temas que este año reporta el Informe Anual sobre Derechos Humanos de Personas Trans, Lesbianas, Gays y Bisexuales en Perú (2014-2015), un reporte sobre la situación de estas poblaciones y la inacción del Estado Peruano con respecto a la protección de sus derechos, entre ellos el derecho a la vida y la integridad personal. 1. Homicidios El informe reporta que 13 personas LGBT fueron asesinadas entre abril del 2014 y marzo del 2015: seis (6) gays, cinco (5) trans femeninas, una (1) lesbiana y una (1) persona aparentemente bisexual. “Asesinatos a martillazos y muertes con corte en la garganta y manos atadas hacia atrás son evidencia de un alto nivel de ensañamiento, que nos hace pensar una vez más que se trata de crímenes de odio motivados por la orientación sexual y/o identidad de género de la víctima. Cuando los medios o grupos conservadores los califican de ‘crímenes pasionales’, justifican y ocultan los verdaderos móviles de este fenómeno social”, sostiene Maribel Reyes, secretaria general de la Red Peruana TLGB.
2. Intolerancia a la comunidad LGBT Esta publicación, lanzado en el marco del Día Internacional contra la Homofobia, Transfobia y Bifobia, muestra 13 casos de afectación a la seguridad personal, que van desde empujones hasta golpizas brutales, no solo con puños y pies, sino también con objetos contundentes como palos, piedras y un tronco, como el caso de la trans femenina Kiara Chinchay Leiva, que quedó en coma tras ser atacada por siete sujetos desconocidos en el distrito limeño de Independencia. 3. Violencia familiar Este reporte informa, además, sobre 13 casos de violencia familiar, de los cuales siete (7) corresponden a adolescentes TLGB: cuatro (4) lesbianas, dos (2) gays y una (1) trans femenina. Se observó, como en años anteriores, que las familias golpean, amenazan, someten al aislamiento y envían a sus hijas e hijos de manera frecuente a psicólogas y psicólogos, quienes someten a las y los adolescentes a una nueva victimización a través de sus creencias religiosas y argumentos pseudocientíficos y agudizan así el estado crítico de estas personas de corta edad que se sienten inseguras en su propia hogar. “El Estado Peruano no puede mirar hacia otro lado cuando continúan violándose cotidianamente los derechos fundamentales de una parte de su población. Los estados democráticos deben respetar y hacer cumplir los derechos de las personas LGBT como una cuestión de derechos humanos. Sin igualdad plena no existe democracia real”, asegura Alberto Hidalgo, miembro del equipo de Incidencia Política de Promsex.
Uruguay busca ampliar matrimonio igualitario a extranjeros para fomentar el turismo El Gobierno uruguayo quiere fomentar la llegada de turistas homosexuales, bisexuales y transexuales y para ello estudia eliminar las trabas administrativas al matrimonio igualitario para las parejas extranjeras, informó el pasado 28 de Mayo la ministra de Turismo y Deporte, Liliam Kechichian. “Uruguay ha dado pasos muy grandes en la conquista de derechos y por eso podemos estar hablando de un turismo LGBT. Es el país mas amigable para ese segmento en América Latina y para conquistar las bodas necesitamos hacer algunos cambios en el reglamento”, subrayó Kechichian. Según la legislación uruguaya actual, para que una pareja homosexual pueda formalizar el matrimonio igualitario en este país debe haber residido en él por un periodo mínimo de tres meses, un aspecto que el Gobierno estudia reformar. En cuanto al origen de los turistas que estarían más interesados en esta reforma, la ministra no concretó países pero dijo que serían aquellos en los que el colectivo homosexual “no goce de los derechos” que sí se le reconocen en Uruguay. Según informó la ministra, entre los objetivos para el año 2020 se encuentra llegar a los cuatro millones de turistas anuales en Uruguay y fomentar la llegada de visitantes desde Colombia, México y Perú.
