Alumni Weekend

Where shines the Big Virginia Sun...

Principal’s Welcome Welcome home to Shenandoah! The beautiful springtime campus of Shenandoah Valley Academy provides the setting for a glorious reunion. Alumni Weekend is the shining moment when the SVA Family is complete on this side of heaven. It is a precious time to strengthen bonds with beloved classmates and faculty who have made an important difference in our lives. And, it is a special opportunity to meet the wonderful students who attend SVA today. Shenandoah Valley Academy is strong and growing because of the unwavering support of its graduates—because of you. Students who attend today become a part of the powerful legacy of SVA’s Adventist boarding school education because of alumni who generously make financial gifts to sustain this special school. Thank you for committing your energies and resources to the well-being of SVA students today. It is my prayer that this weekend will be a time to renew our love for God and each other. I encourage you to partner with your school again by making a financial gift, or by taking time to encourage current students. It is a special honor to have you return to Shenandoah to celebrate 110 years of God’s shining blessings… Where Shines the Big Virginia Sun… Welcome!

Donald Short, Principal

Message from the Alumni President In anticipation of alumni weekend, we become nostalgic, remembering the “good old days”. We get out our yearbooks and other keep sakes. I have several clothing items from my days at SVA – a couple of t-shirts, a varsity jacket, and a flag football jersey. I am sure many of you have saved some too. To my delight, my daughter, now a junior at SVA, wears these items to school from time to time with pride.

Dr. Kelli Hanon and daughter, McKenzie ‘19

As you walk around campus this weekend, you will encounter current students in SVA sweatshirts and other clothing. They, like us, now belong to the SVA club. We all wear things that tell others who we are and where we belong. Not only is it fun to dress up in these items but it also is comforting to know we are part of something bigger. Isaiah 61:10 says “My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness…” For 110 years now, students have come to Shenandoah Valley Academy and become part of a family. SVA teaches students that they are God’s children and that He is giving them the most special clothing of all – His perfection. Please prayerfully consider volunteering, giving a financial gift, or befriending a current student so that you can help SVA continue to cloth students like you for the future – in God’s robes, so that all will know who they are and where they are going.

Kelli Fluharty Hanon ’88‡v, Alumni President

Closing Song In a Little While We’re Going Home Congregation Let us sing a song that will cheer us by the way, We will do the work that our hands may find to do, In a little while we’re going home. In a little while we’re going home; For the night will end in the everlasting day, And the grace of God will our daily strength renew, In a little while we’re going home. In a little while we’re going home. Refrain: In a little while, in a little while, We shall cross the billow’s foam, We shall meet at last when the stormy winds are past, In a little while we’re going home.

There’s a rest beyond, there’s relief from every care, In a little while we’re going home; And no tears shall fall in that city bright and fair, In a little while we’re going home.

VISION • LEADERSHIP • HUMILITY • LOVE

Honoring Jane (Goyne) Bainum for her lifelong investment in Shenandoah Valley Academy students. A generous philanthropist with a commitment to helping underserved populations, Jane is a 1938 graduate of Shenandoah Valley Academy (SVA). Jane’s education at SVA deepened and solidified her personal values and faith. Born in Tillamook, Oregon, Jane and her family moved to Pennsylvania when she was five. She met Stewart Bainum at Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland. The two were married in 1941, and during their 72 years of marriage, were blessed with four children, 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The Bainums raised their family in Silver Spring, Maryland, as they built several successful businesses together. Stewart Bainum, who passed away in 2014, always highlighted Jane’s contributions to their partnership and success in business.

Jane (Goyne) Bainum ‘38 In 1968, the Bainums established a charitable foundation known today as the Bainum Family Foundation. For 50 years, this Foundation has provided educational opportunities and support for children living in poverty. Due to their own childhood experiences and the strength they gained through their Adventist schooling, Jane and Stewart saw education as a pathway out of poverty. Today, the Foundation continues to honor their legacy and support the ongoing philanthropic efforts of four generations of the Bainum family.

Jane divides her time between Chevy Chase, Maryland, and Naples, Florida, where she spends time with friends and extended family. Jane is an avid reader and fervent Washington Nationals baseball fan. As the family matriarch, she delights in family gatherings. She remains an active philanthropist with a deep commitment to the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 6
