“The S.V.A. of sacred birth... Our own dear school of sterling worth.” Charles Zirkle, a young church worker on his deathbed, was inspired to make a selfless request: to be granted his inheritance to establish a school to educate students for God’s service. Zirkle’s 42-acre gift has grown far beyond what he could have asked or imagined, establishing Shenandoah Valley Academy in 1908, and inspiring an unparalleled legacy of giving among Alumni and Friends for the Adventist boarding school education of more than 5,300 graduates.

We honor and recognize those living and dead, Alumni and Friends, businesses and organizations whose financial gifts established, strengthen and sustain Shenandoah Valley Academy. These are the visionaries and investors whose acts of love and deeds of faith demonstrate loyalty and generosity in their commitment to the students and the enduring mission of Shenandoah to educate young people for college and careers, to love and serve Jesus. – Gift of the Class of 2017 With Gratitude, Installed Alumni Weekend April 21, 2018

Shenandoah Today

Notes from the Principal Today, as it has for 110 years, Shenandoah Valley Academy honors the vision of founder Charles Zirkle by providing a school where students are educated to love and serve Jesus. It is the philanthropic tradition of giving by SVA Alumni and Friends—like you---who keep this school thriving as it serves a growing student body. As you will read in this report, your generous financial gifts, donations for operations, tuition assistance and other projects resulted in an operating increase of $356,000 for Fiscal Year 2018. Your generosity combined with the gifts of others resulted in more than $1,211,700.00 in total charitable gifts received as of June 30, 2018. This meant that with careful budgeting and conservative expenditures, there was cash in the bank to make it through the summer months. And best of all, regular generous financial gifts helped provide approximately $1 million in scholarships and tuition assistance to qualified students this year. It is especially exciting to share with you about a generous donor who stepped forward to partner with the Board of Trustees to develop a comprehensive campus facilities Master Plan which has given focus to capital improvement priorities. Another generous gift upgraded the school kitchen providing a new dishwashing system, steamer, tilt skillet, kettle and gas range, inspiring SVA food service that is focused on local whole food offerings. And if you happen to see SVA students out and about in the Valley on bikes, or kayaking on the river, know that your gifts are making a real difference in the lives of students. I thank you! Experiencing the youthful energy of 203 students reverberating through SVA classrooms, ballfields, cafeteria and dorms is a great joy! I’m so pleased to have Joe Lowe ’86 here on campus leading recruitment and sharing the SVA story with potential students and their families on a daily basis. His efforts combined with the recruitment effort of SVA Parent Association volunteers is already resulting in early new student applications for next year and that is exciting. The SVA Family has so much for which to be thankful! As you read this report, be inspired by how Shenandoah Valley Academy is fulfilling its mission as a sustainable Adventist boarding academy. Be inspired by the precious students fulfilling possibilities in their lives. It is your giving and God’s blessings that have made this possible. With Gratitude,

Donald R. Short • Principal

From the Director of Development & Alumni Relations 2017-2018 Giving Highlights Shenandoah Valley Academy relies on philanthropy. Charitable financial gifts from Alumni and Friends, foundations, churches and businesses support a quality school program, campus maintenance, capital improvements and MOST IMPORTANTLY scholarships and tuition assistance for the precious students who attend SVA. You who give so faithfully and generously make Shenandoah the school it is today. You responded in fiscal year July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018 with more than 1,508 gifts to Shenandoah’s Annual Fund. This provided an operating increase of $356,000, the blessing of an increase for the fourth consecutive year! Your shared visionary investment in SVA is sustaining this special school for the wonderful students who walk SVA’s happy halls today and in the future. • Fourth Year Increase Alumni and Friends Giving* Gifts from individuals account for 84% of all gifts, 58% of total gift income this year. Because of visionary donor-investors who paid-off long-term debt, SVA is a debt-free school two years and counting. Your regular financial gifts drive increasing enrollment by helping keep the bold, important promise “that no qualified student is turned away from Shenandoah because of finances.” THANK YOU generous and loyal Alumni and Friends! • Fourth Year 100% Board of Trustees Giving THANK YOU for your leadership Trustees!

VISION • LEADERSHIP • HUMILITY • LOVE

Honoring Jane (Goyne) Bainum for her lifelong investment in Shenandoah Valley Academy students. A generous philanthropist with a commitment to helping underserved populations, Jane is a 1938 graduate of Shenandoah Valley Academy (SVA). Jane’s education at SVA deepened and solidified her personal values and faith. Born in Tillamook, Oregon, Jane and her family moved to Pennsylvania when she was five. She met Stewart Bainum at Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland. The two were married in 1941, and during their 72 years of marriage, were blessed with four children, 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The Bainums raised their family in Silver Spring, Maryland, as they built several successful businesses together. Stewart Bainum, who passed away in 2014, always highlighted Jane’s contributions to their partnership and success in business.

Jane (Goyne) Bainum ‘38 In 1968, the Bainums established a charitable foundation known today as the Bainum Family Foundation. For 50 years, this Foundation has provided educational opportunities and support for children living in poverty. Due to their own childhood experiences and the strength they gained through their Adventist schooling, Jane and Stewart saw education as a pathway out of poverty. Today, the Foundation continues to honor their legacy and support the ongoing philanthropic efforts of four generations of the Bainum family.

Jane divides her time between Chevy Chase, Maryland, and Naples, Florida, where she spends time with friends and extended family. Jane is an avid reader and fervent Washington Nationals baseball fan. As the family matriarch, she delights in family gatherings. She remains an active philanthropist with a deep commitment to the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
