Bring My children—My sons and daughters... who are called by My name; the ones I made, shaped and created for My profound glory. Isaiah 43:6-7

Serve

God

“Determination, perseverance and faith. These are not characteristics that we can

simply leave here at SVA as we go our separate ways. As you each pursue God’s plan for your lives, ask God to help you continue to grow in these areas. Hebrews 12:1-2 says, Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus” (NIV). – Sierra Anderson, 2019 Class President Commencement Address

Notes from the Principal This giving report honors and recognizes you--Alumni and Friends, businesses and organizations--whose financial investment strengthens and sustains Shenandoah Valley Academy. You are the visionary donor-investors whose ongoing financial gifts demonstrate generosity, loyalty and a commitment to Shenandoah’s mission. You will read in this report that your financial gifts combined with the gifts of others, provided for operations, tuition assistance and other projects totaling $1,212,760.00 in charitable giving to the SVA Annual Fund for fiscal year July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019. This represents a gain of $144,822 over the 2018-2019 budget and a small operating increase for the fifth consecutive year.

Value

Knowledge

Because of your generosity there was cash in the bank to cover campus repairs including carpet installation, paving, replacement of HVAC units, Hadley Hall bathroom renovations and more. This was accomplished with a dedicated and hardworking team of Maranatha volunteers. Most importantly, your generous financial gifts this year provided more than $1 million in scholarships and tuition assistance to qualified students.

It is inspiring to see how philanthropic gifts over five years, with an ever-increasing outpouring of financial support from Alumni and Friends, is sustaining SVA to bless more and more students. The long-term result is generations of graduates whose lives fulfill the SVA Vision to Serve God, Value Knowledge, Accept a Life of Service. Your personal financial investment is a big part of these possibilities in students’ lives being realized. Thank you. Today I am especially encouraged to see how God continues to work in the lives of SVA students, carrying out His perfect gracefilled plan for the children He loves. We know their SVA experience and friendships throughout their lives will continue to call them into relationship with Him. There is no greater mission or result. Thank you for being a part of it! Thank you for your prayers and financial support which bring encouragement to all of us here at SVA. With deepest gratitude,

Donald R. Short • Principal

Appreciation from the heart Because of you... I am making life-long friends and

It is important for me to attend SVA because…

memories • get excited when I learn something new in class and understand it in depth • sing with praise team to express my love for God • enjoy going to school with my friends and have helpful, kind, caring teachers • am learning how to be independent for college and adult life • have had my eyes opened to the needs of others on mission trip • decided to give my life to Christ and be baptized.

the deans have impacted my life, each one feels like a father to me • public school was not healthy for me or my Christian walk • I believe in Christian education! • I come from a place where poverty and violence is an everyday thing • it has helped me realize the world is not only full of bad people, but some actually care • I am learning the true value of relationships with friends and with God Himself • the teachers have big hearts and are kind to everyone, and I get to learn more about God in the process of going to school • God has placed me here among spiritually like-minded people where I am free to express what I believe • I am determined to have an Adventist opportunity-filled education • I want to learn about God and what He is calling me to do • I have the opportunity to work as a Resident Assistant and enjoy my job, trying to do my best for the guys in the dorm • I have already matured so much through the experiences here and cannot wait to see what God has planned for the rest of my life • I am learning how to handle a job and classes in high school while developing work references • now I have goals for the future and am beginning to see God’s plan for my life • I am learning to be a leader for God in the world • I have never experienced so much love and Christianity among peers in my life and I love being a part of it.

My SVA education means a lot to me because… the family atmosphere of love and care I experience here is great! • instead of being broken down, I am constantly reminded that I am loved and valued • SVA has given me a true sense of home • I want to impact people the way the deans and faculty have impacted me, to help people who struggle grow closer to God and follow Him • I have never seen such a great atmosphere in all my life and have found a safe haven at SVA • I have learned the importance of serving others and the joy that comes from it • I can be involved with music, sports and organizations where I do what I enjoy, am challenged and have made good friends • I am learning to be a spiritual leader, to speak openly about God and the Bible • at SVA I can inspire people with God’s gift of music • the school spirit here is amazing! We base it on God and try our best to do good and that is the way I like it • these have been the best years of my life.

Students say thank you...

Thank you… I want to personally thank you for giving • You went out of your way to help me • You make me realize there are good people who give to help students attend SVA • I hope to be able to give to SVA too someday. Thank you for all that you have done for me! • Thank you for contributing to my education • Your help has made all of these opportunities possible for me! • You keeping me in Christian education means so much to my family and me • I pray that God will bless you to return how you have blessed me. Thank you so much for what you’ve done! • Thank you for giving to help me. I don’t know you and you do not know me. I am positive God sent you to help me, and I want to say thank you a billion times • You have made it possible for me to remain here at SVA • Thank you from the bottom of my heart • I appreciate you more than you know • This is all possible

because of you. Thank you for everything. 6

a Life of Service

In the Old Testament, God tells the leaders and priests that they set the tone for the morality of the nation. On Shenandoah Valley Academy’s campus, the resident assistants are important student leaders who help set the tone and attitude for the whole student body through their work and ministry in the dormitories. Hadley Hall and Phanstiel Hall are sisterhoods and brotherhoods where older student leaders learn to mentor and care for their peers. The deans rely on the RAs to lead the dorm program and challenge each one to role model Christian character for their dorm brothers and sisters.

Hadley Hall “Grandest Club in All the World” Resident Assistants and Deans

An important part of the SVA work program, RAs tutor, provide emotional support, and help students learn independence and self-motivation. By following dorm procedures and encouraging their fellow students to do the same, they support the deans and demonstrate that dorm life is fun, organized and works best when respect is shown to one another. RAs learn life skills like teamwork; being a leader among peers; holding peers accountable; critical thinking and problem solving; managing a facility; leading worship; planning events; and providing quality customer service. It is amazing to witness what happens when teenagers are given responsibility, rise to the challenge and develop into leaders. – Shenandoah Impact Newsletter October 2019 Columbia Union Visitor
