financial support sustain Shenandoah year-toyear and we are so deeply grateful. Your constant, loyal support makes all the difference, especially in 2019-2020 in facing the unique and often daunting challenges brought on by a global pandemic.

Notes from the Principal This giving report is dedicated to the Class of 2020 for inspiring the SVA Family “…to press together, to support each other and meet challenges head-on. …we have the confidence that God is with us… He will guide us through the storms.” – Class President Gabrielle Patrick, July Commencement Address This giving report represents a powerful testimony of the generosity and resilience of the SVA Family. To Alumni and Friends, a special thank you—we cannot thank you enough--for all you do for SVA students. Your prayers and

For fiscal year July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020, your financial gifts combined with the gifts others, for operations, tuition assistance, and projects, totaled $1,469,975.00 in charitable giving to the SVA Annual Fund and for the soon-to-break-ground Zirkle Gymnasium Capital Improvement Project. This resulted in a gain of $215,499.00 over the 2019-2020 budget and an operating increase for the sixth consecutive year. Most importantly, your generous financial gifts this year helped provide more than $1,000,000 in tuition assistance and scholarships to qualified students. Your generosity combined with appropriate student financial contracts drastically minimized the need for special financial assistance in the Spring for families struggling because of the impact of COVID-19 in the fourth quarter. Your

Graduates Invest $20,000-$20,000 in SVA and Worthy Students!

On what would have been Alumni Weekend, the Class of 2020 announced a $20,000 class gift for the Zirkle Gymnasium Improvement Project. Prior to the closure of SVA and transition to online classes in March, the class had planned a surprise presentation of their gift on Alumni Sabbath with the SVA Family assembled, and honoring alumni who financially invest so generously in SVA and worthy students. They knew this unprecedented class gift amount would help SVA receive important dollar-for-dollar matching funds, doubling the gift to provide $40,000 for the gym renovation project. Then in July when the class convened for graduation, the officers recognized they had an opportunity to do even more with fourth quarter senior events and class trip canceled. Setting aside their own disappointments, the class chose to think of current and future students, generously voting for the remainder of their class fund--nearly $20,000!--to help worthy students attend SVA. Thank you, Class of 2020, for your generosity, kindness and foresight, for your $20,000-$20,000 financial gift, an investment that is making a difference for SVA students right now and will for many years to come!

giving combined with special gifts made possible capital improvements and purchases including: a new cafeteria roof; a coach and a bus for the transportation fleet; new mattresses for Phanstiel Hall; the installation of Plasma Pure air purifiers, and IT upgrades including a new network server. By every measure, 2019-2020 was wonderful school year, the senior class capably leading with heart and enthusiasm. As the pandemic was announced, mission-music trip participants about to board flights were forced to return to school upon learning Argentina’s borders had closed. Students packed their books for Spring break, during which time the governor closed schools and teachers heroically switched to online instruction for the remainder of the year. Together students and teachers faced challenges and disappointments to emerge resilient and finish the year well. This was accomplished by their hard work and perseverance with God’s blessing, and with the prayers and support of the extended SVA Family.

Thank you, each and every one. For 2020-2021, we are having an exceptional year with LOTS of students, a significant enrollment increase to 217 students, including 37 children of Alumni! Students are happy, and grateful to learn, play, and worship with friends and teachers in the freedom of “God’s works in nature multiplied.” Of course, school is different because of health precautions, but the result is zero virus cases to date. We are thankful and praise God from whom all blessings flow for His leading and protection. Thank you, Alumni and Friends, for your prayers and financial gifts that make all of this possible. You are sustaining SVA as a haven for students to learn and grow in a caring school where they have the opportunity to know and love Jesus. With deepest gratitude,

Donald R. Short • Principal

Exactly one week after the ‘faith bomb’ dropped, Sam Renton ’21, enrolled at SVA. His mom says, “the biggest take-away from the Holy Spirit leading Sam to SVA, is that when God reveals His plans, we don’t have to make it happen—He does it.”

Two weeks prior, sending my middle son, Sam, to boarding school 3,000 miles away from our home in Oregon never crossed my mind. I went to bed unsuspecting of what the night would bring. Little did I know God was about to drop a “faith bomb.” I tossed and turned and could not sleep. Did I accidently drink caffeine? Why can’t I sleep? Then I realized God was trying to communicate with me. At 11:30 p.m. I got on my knees and started praying. An hour or two later, I jumped into the Word to figure out what God’s message to me was, landing on Exodus 22:29. “You shall not delay to offer the first of your ripe produce and your juices. The firstborn of your sons you shall give to Me” (NKJV). But Josh is our firstborn, I expressed to God. Why are you saying Sam? When morning came, it was clear. I fell to my knees and sobbed. Really God? This makes no sense. Sending our son to a boarding school on the other side of the country during a pandemic? And why Shenandoah Valley Academy (SVA)? There are boarding schools here. I don’t understand.

I made calls to three different schools that day. Lord, if it is within Your will, is it OK to ask for a sign? May the school that offers to pray with me on the phone be the school. SVA was the only school that offered to pray with me. Wow, OK, God! But there is no way my son or husband will agree. Holding onto this promise “‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6 NKJV), God had a plan, and He was faithful to see it through. After conversations, phone calls and much prayer, Sam was very excited to go to SVA, and my husband agreed. Sam started classes at SVA a week after the faith bomb dropped. I now realize this seemingly lastminute plan was anything but. Could it be the framework was laid the moment I stepped on campus 25 years ago? Perhaps the answers to years of prayers are culminating in a beautiful story on the campus of SVA? The revelation might’ve been last minute, but certainly not the plan itself, for “everything is possible for one who believes” (Mark 9:23, NIV).—Jennifer LeVos Renton (’95)

Shenandoah Valley Academy Home to Traditions, Shooting Stars, Christian Hearts, Loved by Alumni, They tell me you are small, and that is true, for I have seen your minute size and walked your small campus. And they say you are sheltered, and I agree, for you lack excitement of the world. And they tell me you are strict, and yes, I have witnessed harsh treatment of the undeserving. And having said all this, I turn to those who sneer at my school and I look at them with confidence and say: Come and show me another place as wonderful as this, with mentors more encouraging, loving, and motivating as ours. Show me a family as tightly bound as ours, and yet is spread all over the world. Show me a more gorgeous home with mountains, valleys, and rivers surrounding it. Show me another place where God’s work is so present in the hearts of many. Proud, Rural, Successful, Zealous, Friendly, dedicated, spiritual, I lived here when I was young, seeing blue and white gowns leaving with memories of a life time. I will soon be walking down the same path as those before me, starting life. You have always been a home to those whose homes are hundreds of miles away. Oh Shenandoah, you are the home of my heart. - Natalee Townsend, 2nd generation graduate
