Message from the President As women we wear many hats; daughter, caregiver, wife, mother, teacher, bus driver, diaper changer, cleaner, chaperone, coach, counselor, errand runner, just to name a few. We also handle a multitude of tasks daily; spouse duties, mother duties, business owner duties, work duties, officer, church member, chairmen, board member duties, leader in home, work, school, and the list goes on and on. We can easily wear ourselves out. There is always more to do than we can get done and never enough hours in the day to get it all done. I heard an old man say, “If you don’t get apart, you’ll come apart”. In order to be effective women leaders in any sphere of influence, we must rest, renew, refresh in order to be our best. When we work without the proper rest and renewal; we burn out. Steven Covey’s Habit #7, of the “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” is “sharpening the saw”. If you are cutting wood, it makes sense to stop every once in a while, and sharpen the saw. If the saw gets dull, you will work a lot harder than you have to and not get as much cut. Sharpening the saw is about rest and renewal. David wrote in the Books of Psalms, “the Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; He leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to His name”. (Psalm 23:1-3 NLT) It’s only through the quiet peaceful time, rest… that our strength is truly renewed. The definition of renewed is to resume an activity after an interruption; to begin doing something again with increased strength; the action of extending the period of validity, a process of improving, repairing or making something more successful. Renewal is the principle and the process that empowers us to move upward, grow, change and improve. In a world filled with news of all that’s wrong, wildfires, pandemic, disease, domestic woes, political tension, life’s daily challenges; it’s hard to keep view of this season of renewal in the midst of life’s daily challenges.

President’s message continued… How do we move forward in this season of renewal? First, we rest and release all that weighs us down to someone greater than ourselves. Next, we return to the things that ground us. We keep God first. We focus on family, extended family, friends, each other, and thank God for rest, renewal, and life. We return to the rituals, vows, and commitments we made when we first began this journey as sisters. We show up, we support the vision and mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and its Founders. We focus and live our mission daily; sisterhood and service. Let me encourage all today; be intentional about getting rest and renewal. Rest is necessary. We accomplish a lot more and make sharper decisions when we rest. We lower stress and raise energy when we rest. No more just talking about it…we must be about rest and renewal; it’s a serious matter. Think of it as an investment that pays great dividends now. We are the legacy of our Founders who came together as one, who saw beyond a segregated, male-dominated time and dreamed of creating a support network for women with like minds. These women came together for the mutual uplift of all and brought together talents and strengths for the benefit of others. Our Founders believed women could accomplish anything if they just believed and simply worked to honor what was called “an everlasting debt to raise (Negroes) up and make them better.” This coming together of women– like mind, same love, one accord, one mind-- not only fostered interaction, stimulation, and ethical growth among members; but also provided hope for the masses. From the seed of nine individuals in Washington, DC has grown more than 300,00 women all over the world today; growth, change, renewal. In this season of renewal, we shall remember our creed, “To be supreme in service to all mankind.” In this season of renewal, we shall be actively involved. I encourage all to find new opportunities to further develop your leadership skills. Serve with a Target Program, get involved with a Committee, a local initiative; take ownership of a new project or assignment; get in, fit in and actively work to better serve Chapter and community stakeholders; suggest new ideas and new ways to support the mission, vision, and objectives of the organization. In this season of renewal, we shall practice gratitude. We shall be a Chapter that provides genuine heart care for each member; we shall engage to empower, educate and enlighten. We shall say yes to positive solutions, patience, and kindness. We shall say, yes, we can! We shall ask how can I help and how may I assist while forging productivity, creativity, teamwork and unity? In this season of renewal, we shall brainstorm and think outside the box. In this season of renewal, we shall commit to learning. Leaders learn by carving out time to read. There are so many opportunities through AKA Academy to learn more about the Sorority, the Chapter and to get involved. In this season of renewal, we remain resilient, resolute, resourceful women of excellence who serve, who commit to our Soror Code of Ethics, and who strive daily to lead and mentor by example. In this season of renewal, we shall commit to renew our attitudes. Leading anything, anyone; home, work, school, sorority, people is tough. Some can be critical and demanding. But God has called us ALL to LEAD, serve in the messiness of life, serve all people and represent Him well. May we always be open to rest in Him, allow Him to renew our hearts and minds each day so we can better self, better our relationships with each other, and serve excellently those we have been entrusted to serve.

Thank you to ALL for your continued commitment to excellence in service. GROW, GLOW AND LET’S GO TOGETHER Dr. Angela Gooden, President Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Nu Gamma Omega Chapter

HBCU

for Life and #CAPSM

Target 1 Holds Workshops NGO Target 1 held a workshop on Financial Aid on Saturday, April 9, 2022. Soror Ebony Holmes conducted the workshop with a wealth of information that was extremely beneficial. The next workshop will tentatively be held on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at 11:00 am. The workshop is entitled "All About The HBCU Life". Our panelists are three of our former Debutante Queens, Kennedy Carter - Dillard University, Sydney LaFleur - Southern University and Soror Raven Kelley - North Carolina A&T. More information will be forthcoming.

Students being accepted into #CAPSM Program Alpha Kappa Alpha will assist students as they seek admission to college by providing guidance and support in completing the application and enrollment process through the 2018-2022 Signature Program, #CAP℠. Too many African-American high school students lack the basic support needed to navigate through the college admissions process. Through #CAP℠, we partner with local high schools and youth groups to bridge the gap between high school and college by demystifying the college application and enrollment process. This educational initiative will extend to all colleges and universities, both HBCUs and non-HBCUs. #CAP℠ is a step-by-step approach to facilitate college admission from researching various institutions and submitting applications through completion of the enrollment process. Chapters will assist students in completing college applications, preparing for the ACT and SAT, writing compelling personal statements, identifying scholarships and other financial aid, and compiling a portfolio to track college admission results. Through #CAP℠, Alpha Kappa Alpha will improve the trajectory of the lives of talented young people by increasing their potential for success and laying the foundation for positive, productive, and fulfilling lives. We are accepting juniors and seniors for the program now. For more information or to refer a student now, please contact Lynn Farris, Vanessa LaFleur or Errin Gaines. Please send the student's name, email address, to Soror Errin Gaines c/o erringaines@gmail.com. Once she receives the requested information, application packets will be sent to parents and students.

Soror Mary is retired from Exxon Mobil. Since she and her late husband, Honey Do Fulton, were both employed at Exxon, she would often assist the Chapter in obtaining grants from Exxon. Her family would provide the service hours so the funds would be donated to the Foundation. She was elected as President of the Foundation but was unable to serve when she received an out-of-state promotion with Exxon Mobil. Her love for Nu Gamma Omega Chapter is evident as she has been passionate about the growth and stability of the Chapter for the 42 years since the Chapter was chartered in 1980. We are pleased to honor, Soror Mary Toaston. Thanks for your continued support and love for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Nu Gamma Omega Chapter.

Soror Mary with her greatest pride and joy, her family, at her retirement celebration from Exxon Mobil.

Dream Makers On February 19, 2022, Dream Makers II held the first mentee meeting of 2022. The committee mentors and mentees were introduced to each other. The Green Book documentary “The Green Book: Guide to Freedom,” was also presented in celebration of Black History Month.

The “Green Book,” was a book by Victor Hugo Green, a black postal worker, published from the mid 1930’s to the mid 1960’s, that offered a roadmap for African-American travelers that showed where black drivers and their families could eat, find lodging, and enjoy themselves without concerns of experiencing racism and discrimination.

A Moment in AKA History

Parliamentary Procedure Tip from Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised- In Brief RULES OF DEBATE 1. Speech Limits Ordinarily, you may only speak in debate twice on any debatable motion on the same day. This limit applies unless the organization has adopted special rules for debate. 2. Who gets preference to speak first? Ordinarily the chair should designate to speak the first person who rises after the previous speaker has finished. However, there are three common exceptions to this rule: a. The maker of the motion has one time preference. Generally, the maker of the motion gets preference to speak first after the chair has stated the motion. b. One who has not yet spoken on an issue has preference over someone who has spoken even once on an issue. c. If the chair knows that someone has an opposing view, the Chair should attempt to alternate between supporters and opponents of the motion. 3. Stick to the subject Comments should be germane, meaning they should have bearing on whether the motion should be adopted. 4. Debate issues, not personalities Comments should never include personal comments about an opponent personally, her motives, or intentions. Never refer to a person as a liar, a fraud, or make other personal attacks.

The Founders’ Window was produced by Alpha Kappa Alpha member, internationally renowned African American artist and long-time professor of art at Howard University, Lois Mailou Jones (1905 – 1998). The stained-glass installation is located at Rankin Chapel, Howard University. The window was dedicated during the weekend celebration of the sorority's seventieth anniversary Founders' Day, January 13-15, 1978.

5. How to avoid personalities To avoid personal attacks, direct all comments to the chair. Thus, rather than saying, “Soror that argument is ridiculous,” say, “Madame Basileus, the speaker’s final point is without merit,” or “Madame Basileus, can the treasurer please tell us how much is currently in the treasury,” (referring to her by her title). Risk Management Minute POLICY All existing and prospective members have the right to be treated with dignity and respect. These rights are enforced by punishing violations of the Sorority's policies and procedures. A cornerstone of the Sorority's Risk Management policy is the prohibition of hazing. Hazing has been prohibited in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority since the organization was founded in 1908. In 1999, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority reaffirmed its total opposition to hazing with the publication of a tougher anti-hazing policy and the implementation of new procedures to identify, investigate and punish incidents. Hazing will not be tolerated in any form. DEFINITION OF HAZING: Hazing is defined as an act or series of acts that include, but are not limited to: • Physical acts, such as hitting, striking, laying hands upon or threatening to do bodily harm to any individual(s), while acting in one's capacity as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. • Behavior which is directed against any individual(s) for the purpose of causing shame, abuse, insult, humiliation, intimidation or disgrace. • A variety of prohibited practices, including but not limited to, "underground hazing," "financial hazing," "prepledging," "post-pledging" or "post-initiation pledging." HAZING POLICY VIOLATIONS Any individual or chapter violation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's Risk Management policy will result in suspension, expulsion or revocation of the chapter's charter. A fine may also be imposed. In addition, hazing activities may result in official discipline by a college/university or the imposition of civil and criminal penalties for individuals and/or chapters.

Disaster Preparedness Point Don’t wait until a storm is brewing in the Gulf to get prepared. Check your supplies and be ready at any time. As we have recently witnessed, bad weather can occur rather suddenly, not necessarily during hurricane season. Best Tip: BE PREPARED!
