Ms. McCombs has completed a Judicial Externship for the Honorable Erin Wilder Doomes with the U.S. Court, Middle District of Louisiana. She has also completed an internship with Knowable with an initiative and focus on restorative justice in commercial contracts. Ms. McCombs will graduate in May 2023, after which she plans to sit for the Missouri Bar and pursue a career in Criminal Defense and Personal Injury litigation.

Eryn Wells is a 3L at SULC from Seattle, Washington. Since entering law school, Ms Wells has interned at the National Credit Union Administration and served as a Judicial Extern in the Washington State Supreme Court During her 2L year, she served as a Research Intern at Vermont Law School's Center for Agriculture and Food Systems. Over the Summer of 2022, Ms. Wells split her summer between working as a Summer Associate at Reed Smith LLP and Legal Intern at The Hershey Company In her 3L year, Ms Wells will focus on fulfilling her roles as Vice President of HBA, Editor in Chief of the Journal of International Law, Business, and Policy, and Hennessy Fellow After graduating from SULC, Ms Wells has accepted a return offer from Reed Smith LLP and after taking the California Bar Exam, will be an Associate in their Real Estate Estate Practice Group of Business & Finance.

Prior to law school, Ms. McCombs, a Washington state native, earned her Associate degree in Psychology from the College of Western Idaho and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Boise State University Magna Cum Laude in the 3+3 Accelerated Program. Ms. McCombs additionally received her certifications in BSU’s Leader Development Program and Mediation and Alternative Dispute Resolution in 2019 While attending the Southern University Law Center, Ms. McCombs has maintained standing in the top 5% of her class and received the CALI award in Property. Ms. McCombs is currently a member of Law Review, the Board of Student Advisors serving as a teaching assistant in Legal Writing I & II and Evidence, and is a teacher assistant for Chancellor Emeritus B.K. Agnihotri.

In her 2L year, Ms. McCombs participated on the Trial Advocacy Board where she competed in the Louisiana Intrastate Mock Trial Competition in the fall of 2021, during which she and her team members placed first among all Louisiana Law schools and she was awarded the Best Oral Advocate award Ms McCombs also competed in the Texas Young Lawyers National Trial Competition in 2022. As a 3L, Ms. McCombs is Founder of the Honors Board of Advocates and serves as the current President. In addition, Ms. McCombs will serve as a fellow for the Marshall Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, and as a staff writer for the Public Defender

Erica Rodgers is a native of North Carolina and relocated from Raleigh, North Carolina to the pelican state in 2018

Advocacy

Brandon is a former member of the SULC Trial Advocacy Board where he, along with his teammates, won the 2021 2022 Regional ABA Law Student Division’s Arbitration Competition.

Mrs. Rodgers is a third year, part time day student at Southern University Law Center and a first generation aspiring attorney. She currently serves as Secretary of the Inaugural SULC Honors Board of Advocates and Citation Editor of the Inaugural SULC Journal of International Law, Business and Policy, and recently accepted a position with Prof Oeser to work as his Research Ms Rodgers is a former member of the SULC Trial Board where she, along with her teammates Brandon Johnson, Viki McDonald, and Eryn Wells, won the 2021 2022 Regional ABA Law Student Division’s Arbitration Competition. Mrs. Rodgers received the CALI award in both Contracts and Legal Writing II In summer 2021 Mrs Rodgers completed her internship with Innocence Project New Orleans While in Raleigh, Mrs. Rodgers was a Certified Paralegal and Pro Bono Coordinator for the Lawyer on the Line and Volunteer Lawyer programs of Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC). During her time with LANC, Mrs. Rodgers was honored to be the guest commencement speaker for the Meredith College graduation class of 2016, the same college from which she earned her post baccalaureate paralegal certificate in 2013 Prior to attending Meredith, Mrs. Rodgers graduated from North Carolina State University in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science.

Brandon Johnson is a 3L at Southern University Law Center. Brandon is a Rhodes College graduate and proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc This past summer, Brandon had the distinct honor of being a Summer Legal Intern with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law as a part of their Voting Rights Project. After graduation Brandon aspires to pass the bar, become a Civil Rights attorney, and run for political office. In addition to serving as the Treasurer on the Honors Board of Advocates, he also serves as the Executive Editor for the Journal of Race, Gender, and Poverty and will intern this fall with the National Democratic Redistricting Committee as a part of their Litigation Department.

Erica is the proud wife of retired Army Staff Sergeant James Michael “Mike” Rodgers. The couple is raising two young kings, Eric and Josiah When not working or preparing for classes and exams, Erica can be found enjoying quality time with her family Erica also enjoys beginning each day with Bible devotional and cup of coffee as well as traveling. One of Erica’s most cherished travel experiences was a missionary trip she took with her congregation to Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Assistant

Cayman Angelle is a 3L at Southern University Law Center. Cayman is an experienced law clerk that has worked as a Summer Associate with both plaintiff and defense litigation law firms in the New Orleans and Baton Rouge metropolitan areas. He currently works for Judge Kelly Balfour of the 19th Judicial District Court of East Baton Rouge Parish. Cayman is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Intellectual Property, Technology, and Law as well as a member of the Inaugural SULC Honors Board of Advocates. Cayman has also achieved two CALI awards for Legal Writing and Analysis I and Criminal Procedure during his tenure at SULC. This year, he intends to compete in the SULC Mock Court Trial Competition and prepare for the Texas Bar Examination in July 2023

Annie Thomas is a 2L at Southern University Law Center. As a member of the Inaugural SULC Honors Board of Advocates, her goals include tailoring her skills to fully prepare her for the world of litigation and law and having a commitment to bettering herself and those around her through teamwork and excellence.

Kandyce Collins is a graduate of the illustrious Spelman College located in Atlanta, Ga where she earned a Bachelor’s in Political Science with a focus in Pre Law studies. Remaining committed to her love for the law, she continued her education at Clayton State University, receiving a Master of Science in Criminal Justice after defending an original thesis discussing, in part, the shortages of marriageable African American men at the hands of mass incarceration. When she isn’t wearing her "student" hat, all of Kandyce’s time is spent mothering her 1 year old son, Kason, and 4 year old fur baby, Nori. Prior to concluding her 2L year at Southern University Law Center, Kandyce recently completed a 2022 summer internship with the Fulton County District Attorney's Office in Atlanta. She is expected to graduate Fall of 2023 and plans to practice in the greater Metro Atlanta area. As a member of the inaugural SULC Honors Board of Advocates and the SULC Black Law Students Association, her goals include working to build pathways of access and opportunity for individuals belonging to marginalized communities, and serving as an advocate and voice of change for local neighborhoods.

Alvin Casimere grew up in Longview, Texas. He is a first generation college graduate from Sam Houston State University and now is a second year law student at Southern University Law Center. Alvin is an experienced social justice advocate, community leader, and proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. Alvin rose from a socially and economically suppressed neighborhood, which helped him develop a mindset of perseverance and professional tenacity As a law student, his goals are to serve those who are at the crossroads between law and public policy As a member of the Inaugural SULC Honors Board of Advocates, his goals are to be an advocate for those whose voices were silenced due to discrimination or unfair treatment. In addition to being a member of the HBA, Alvin is also the 2L class representative for the 2022 2023 academic year and he serves as a teaching assistant for SULC Board of Student Advisors He recently became a co author for a book entitled “Iron Sharpens Iron: Encouragement & Inspiration”, which is a collaborative work composed of nine authors who detail their personal journeys and hardships for the purpose of encouraging and uplifting others to continue in their walk of faith.

Jamila Dugas is a 2L at Southern University Law Center. Jamila is an experienced Communication Specialist in the corporate world. Driven by growth, opportunity, and knowledge, she takes pride in providing excellent communication services. As a member of the Inaugural SULC Honors Board of Advocates, her goals include learning from other members and expanding her legal skills. In addition to being a member of the HBA, Jamila also participates in SULC’s Black Law Students Association and the SULC Big L, Lil’ L program.

Jessyca Dorn is a 3L at Southern University Law Center Jessyca focuses primarily on property law including real estate, property disputes and estate planning needs. She also has a strong focus in sports law and working with top athletes Driven by the application of social justice, Jessyca takes pride in promoting fairness and equity across many aspects of society. As a member of the Inaugural SULC Honors Board of Advocates, her goals include core skill enhancement and litigation strategy In addition to being a member of the HBA, Jessyca also participates in Sports and Entertainment Law Association and a member of the ABA Young Lawyer Division. Jessyca helped launch the 1st Annual Name, Image & Likeness (NIL) Combine where she provided current and former professional athletes with real legal support in understanding their intellectual property and contracts. She also interned with Clark & Clark in Atlanta, a trust and wills estate planning firm, during

Driven by dismantling an unjust criminal and prison system, she takes pride in providing the best outcomes possible in both her studies and interactions with the community. As a member of the Inaugural SULC Honors Board of Advocates, her goals include strengthening her confidence and presence through oral advocacy, as well as learning how to zealously advocate for her future clients. In addition to being a member of the HBA, Jessica participates as a Junior Editor for the Journal of Race, Gender and Poverty. She is also a member of the Board of Students Advisors, Student Ambassador Committee, Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International, Black Law Students Association, Child and Family Law Society, Louisiana College Prison Project and Labor & Employment Law Society. She is also a member of her beloved sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She has been recognized by the Law Center for her extraordinary commitment to academic excellence by being an annual recipient of an academic scholarship

Alexis Grant is a 3L at Southern University Law Center. She obtained her B.A. from the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC. Alexis served in the United States Navy for nine years. While in the Navy she volunteered as a Sexual Assault Victims Advocate. Driven by her passion to advocate for others, she later worked as a Guardian ad Litem for Richland County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). She takes pride in using her voice to aid others in need. As a member of the Inaugural SULC Honors Board of Advocates, her goal is to strengthen her advocacy skills so that she can better serve the community. In addition to being a member of the HBA, Alexis is also the President of the Veterans Law Organization. Upon graduating Alexis plans to continue to use her advocacy skills through working in civil rights and veterans law.

Jessica Fuqua is a 2L at Southern University Law Center from the “Music City”, Nashville, TN. Jessica is an experienced social worker, writer, and hobby enthusiast.

Jada Haynes is a 2L at Southern University Law Center from Athens, Ga. Jada is a proud alumna of Johnson C. Smith University where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 2017. Jada then received a Master of Public Administration in 2020 from North Carolina Central University. Jada’s goal is to become a civil litigator helping disadvantaged communities and pushing back on racial discrimination. As a triple HBCU student, Jada also wants to use her career to diversify and support the legal profession by using her unique experience and skillset to provide others with the perspective of students that are traditionally underrepresented in legal and corporate spaces. Jada is honored to be a member of the Inaugural SULC Honors Board of Advocates. In addition to being a member of the HBA, Jada is also an Admissions Ambassador and a member of Black Law Students Association.

Khyla Morgan is a 3L Evening Division Student at Southern University Law Center. Khyla received her bachelor’s degree in Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies from Agnes Scott College. She has developed an exceptional gift of learning how to analyze arguments and problems through an intersectional lens, recognizing how the dominant discourse marginalizes groups of people based on their gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. During her matriculation at SULC, she has interned with John Deere/Federation of Southern Cooperatives to help combat issues of heir’s property, which disproportionately affects African American farmers in the rural south. In addition, she has recently completed a summer internship with Verizon’s Public Policy and Government Affairs department Driven by passion, Khyla takes pride in providing the best advocacy for estate planning and land retention in the African American community. As a member of the Inaugural SULC Honors Board of Advocates, her goals include learning how to command the courtroom and being the best litigator possible. In addition to being a member of HBA, Khyla is also a part time remote Legal Clerk at Banks Barrister Law Firm, P C where she assists her supervising attorney with Estate Planning, Asset Protection, and Probate Litigation matters. Khyla also works with the Board of Student Advisors as a Teacher Assistant, and she has recently been extended a grade on invitation to be an Associate Editor for the Journal of Intellectual Property, Technology, and Law She has been awarded the CALI Award for Excellence in Legal Writing II for her extraordinary commitment for analysis

Kiauna Reed is a first generation graduate from Florida A & M University and Florida State University, as well as a first generation law student at Southern University Law Center. She has a Masters in Social Work alongside a Masters of Science in Criminology, and has served the community as an AmeriCorps member of Women In Law, Gender, & Poverty, and Advisors. Ultimately, Kiauna's promote justice and equity Advocate.

Whitley Parker is a 2L at Southern University Law Center. Whitley is interested in pursuing Civil Rights and Criminal law. She has a desire to execute change in underrepresented communities. She is driven by motivation and her eager desire to succeed. She takes pride in becoming the best version of herself and being a reminder to young girls that hard work and dedication can take them far. As a member of the Inaugural SULC Honors Board of Advocates, her ultimate goal is to become a well trained litigator in hopes of providing the best representation to underrepresented communities one day. In addition to being a member of the HBA, Whitley serves as the Student Bar Association’s Evening Division President and Women in Law’s Evening Division Representative.

John K. Pierre has devoted his career to molding lawyer leaders and being a champion of innovation He received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Southern University in 1980, a master’s degree in tax accounting from Texas Tech University in 1982, and a juris doctor degree from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1985 After graduating from law school, from 1986 to 1990, Pierre served his country as a Judge Advocates General Corps Officer, or JAG, for the United States Army In 1990, his next assignment led him to the classroom as he began serving as a faculty member at the Southern University Law Center He has previous teaching experience as a visiting and adjunct professor at California State University, Southern Methodist University School of Law, Loyola University Law School, Southern University College of Business, Saint Leo’s College, Webster University, Louisiana State University, and Baton Rouge Community College. Beyond the classroom, Pierre has published numerous articles on tax law, sales and contracts, real estate and commercial law, ranging from magazine features to legal journal and law review articles In 2006, he transitioned to a leadership role within the institution becoming the vice chancellor of institutional accountability and the evening division he has been serving as the Law Center’s chancellor since 2016 . Shenequa L Grey is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Clyde C Tidwell Endowed Professor at the Law Center where she teaches constitutional criminal procedure, trial advocacy, evidence, criminal trial practice, torts, and international criminal law in the Law Center’s Summer Abroad Summer in London, England She is the author of several publications, but most notably, a leading Louisiana evidence casebook entitled, “An Anatomy of Louisiana Evidence Law: Code, Commentary, Cases, and Problems,” which has been adopted by professors around the state Under his tutelage, the Southern University Law Center has thrived as a global legal institution Year after year, it is recognized for its diversity, world class faculty, and racial justice efforts As a progressive leader and visionary, he advocates for technology advancements, community outreach initiatives, and strategic partnerships that ensures access and opportunity is provided to all Beyond the education field, Pierre was involved in the Baton Rouge school desegregation case as co counsel for the Baton Rouge Branch of the NAACP in Davis v. East Baton Rouge Parish School Board. He was also co counsel in the landmark case of McWaters v. Fema. Pierre fervently serves as a transformational change agent and inspiration to legal professionals and thoughts leaders around the globe He has earned numerous awards for his leadership, innovative strategy, and tireless efforts within the legal and professional realm Hampton University, the Baton Rouge Bar Association, and the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus are just a few of the organizations that have bestowed honors upon Pierre throughout his career Also, his alma mater, Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law, has named him a Distinguished Alumni She is licensed to practice law in Louisiana and the District of Columbia. She received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and her Juris Doctor degree (cum laude) from the Southern University Law Center, where she was a member of the Moot Court Board and successfully argued State v. Raymond Laguand before the Louisiana Supreme Court as a student attorney in the Law Center's Criminal Law Clinic. She was also a member of the SULC Championship Mock Trial team in the LSBA Intra State Mock Trial Competition. She received her LL.M. from Temple University James E. Beasley School of aw with a concentration in trial advocacy, where she received the honor of being voted Most Prepared Student by her peers She is also a graduate of the Atlanta Broadcast Institute in Atlanta, Georgia where she studied Radio and Television Broadcasting. Prior to joining the Law Center, Professor Grey worked as a Staff Attorney for the American Prosecutor's Research Institute, the research affiliate of the National District Attorney's Association in the Washington, DC metropolitan area She then served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Caddo Parish District Attorney's office in Shreveport, Louisiana where she prosecuted a number of violent crimes and sex offenses. With a background in criminal prosecution and more than 18 years teaching criminal procedure, criminal trial practice, and evidence, she is frequently called upon to teach CLE’s to attorneys and judges, and to make radio and television appearances giving commentary in the areas. Grey has also trained mock trial teams for more than 18 years and has won state and regional competitions and has also placed nationally at numerous mock trial competitions across the country

Currently,

Tommy is married to Marie Davenport, and they have two children, Thomas and Marcie.

Tommy earned the coveted “AV Preeminent™ Peer Review Rating” from Martindale Hubbell®, and received the Martindale Hubbell "Client Distinction Award." He was named a “Top Lawyer” in Louisiana by Martindale-Hubbell and the American Lawyers Media, one of the “Top Lawyers in Louisiana,” by The Legal Network, a “Top Ten Criminal Defense Attorney in Louisiana,” by National Academy of Criminal Defense Attorneys and a “Top 100 Trial Lawyers” by The National Trial Lawyers and “Superb 10.0 out of 10 Rating” by Avvo. In 2015, Tommy received the Blackstone Order Award by Louisiana Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. As a trial lawyer, Tommy vigorously advocates against government oppression when his clients are facing loss of freedom, family job and future. He tirelessly protects his clients from big business and the insurance industry.

Thomas “Tommy” Davenport, Jr., is a trial lawyer in Alexandria, Louisiana. He practices criminal defense, constitutional law and personal injury. He graduated cum laude from Southern University Law Center in 2001. He graduated in the top 10 percent of his class, argued a criminal case in the Louisiana Supreme Court, earned the Chancellor’s Award, and was named an All American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy. He also earned undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Criminal Justice from Northeast Louisiana University (now ULM). He is a graduate of the Trial Lawyers College in Dubois, Wyoming and, in 2016, he joined its faculty.

Tommy is a writer, who has been published in a number of legal treaties, a national journal and various state publications. He is currently working on two books, a practice guide and a novel.

Judge John Michael Guidry has been a member of the Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal since 1997. Prior to that he served five years as a member of the Louisiana State Senate and served a year prior to that as member of the Louisiana House of Representatives. Judge Guidry is a former Assistant Parish Attorney for the City of Baton Rouge and the Parish of East Baton Rouge. He is a former Assistant Clerk of the Louisiana House of Representatives. Judge Guidry is a past President of the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Judicial College and a member of the Louisiana Judicial Council. Judge Guidry is an Adjunct Professor at the Southern University Law Center and a past adjunct professor at the Nelson Mandela School of Public Policy at Southern University Baton Rouge. Judge Guidry is a frequent CLE lecturer. Judge Guidry is a member of several professional organizations including the American and National Bar Associations, the American Judges Association, the Louisiana Bar Association, the Louisiana Judicial Council of the National Bar Association, the Baton Rouge Bar Association, and the Louis A. Martinet Legal Society. He is also a member of the Baton Rouge Bar Association’s Pro Bono Committee and the Domestic Violence Curriculum Development Advisory Committee.

Judge Guidry received his B.A. in Political Science from Louisiana State University and his Juris Doctorate from the Southern University Law Center. On January 1, 2023, Judge Guidry will become the first African-American Chief Judge of the Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal in the over 100 year history of the court.

Prior to re joining Reed Smith, Rizzy served with distinction as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Columbia. As an Assistant United States Attorney, he served in various roles, including a senior position in the Violent & Repeat Offender Unit where he prosecuted some of the District’s most violent offenders for various offenses, including armed robbery and homicide. In this role, Rizzy was assigned some of the most high profile violent crime matters in the District, including officer involved shootings. In these cases, Rizzy participated in parallel investigations to determine whether sufficient evidence existed to conclude that any officers violated either federal criminal civil rights law or District of Columbia law. Most recently, Rizzy served in a senior position in the Cyber Crime Section where he led grand jury investigations involving cyber intrusions or hacking, fraud, money laundering, business email compromise schemes, aggravated identity theft and other related offenses. For each of his four plus years at the United States Attorney’s Office, Rizzy received a Special Achievement Award from the Department of Justice in recognition of his trial and investigative work. Before his government service, Rizzy served as a senior associate in Reed Smith’s New York and Washington, DC offices. His practice was devoted to a wide range of commercial and financial services litigation and government investigations. Rizzy has successfully counseled clients in complex investigations involving the False Claims Act, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and other securities related investigations with the SEC. Rizzy actively engages in social justice and civil rights initiatives and as part of that work, he partners with non profits and firm clients to advance criminal justice reform. Rizzy also maintains a substantial pro bono practice. His recent representations include successfully securing post-conviction relief for a formerly incarcerated client in Pennsylvania, withholding removal on behalf of a Haitian asylum applicant, and representing a client on Alabama’s death row in his capital appeal.

Because of his successful track record of applying aggressive multifaceted strategies to advocate for his clients, corporations and high profile individuals trust Rizzy to navigate them through difficult legal and reputational crises.

Rizzy represents corporations and individuals in government investigations, criminal and regulatory proceedings, and related civil litigation. He is an accomplished litigator and seasoned trial lawyer who has tried over 30 cases and has unique experience in successfully representing clients that are the subject of complex investigations with the Department of Justice and other domestic and international regulators. As a former federal prosecutor, Rizzy has a unique understanding of the legal, business, and reputational risks clients face when even the suggestion of their involvement in a criminal investigation is made public.

Jamil Naji, a Palestinian, grew up in St. Louis Missouri since the age of 13, where he earned an Associate degree in Business Administration from St. Louis Community College; a Bachelor of Science in International Business form the University of Missouri; and a Master’s degree in International Business from École Supérieuredes Sciences Commerciales d’Angers (ESSCA SHANGHAI, China).

While attending the Southern University Law Center, Mr. Naji was a member of the SULC Trial Advocacy Board where he was awarded Best Oral Advocate of the 2020 Intraschool Mock Trial Competition. Additionally, he competed on behalf of TAB in the Texas Young Lawyers National Trial Competition in 2021 and 2022 and competed in the Louisiana Interstate Mock Trial Competition in the fall of 2021, where he and his team members placed first among all Louisiana all schools.

Also, while attending SULC, Mr. Naji participated in the Southern University Law Center Technology and Entrepreneurship Clinic, completed the Harvard Business School CORE program, earned the Certificate of Readiness in Financial Accounting, Business Analytics, and Economics for Managers from Harvard Business School, and completed the Institute for Future of Law Practice Special Problems in Commercial Law Incentive. Additionally, Mr. Naji was the recipient of the CALI award in both Obligations and Civil Procedure Mr Naji has also completed three internships with ArchCity Defenders, The American Arab Anti Discrimination Committee, and the San Diego City Attorney’s Office.

Mr. Naji sat for the Missouri Bar and plans to pursue a career in criminal defense and litigation.
