Nov/Dec 2010 Page 4 What’s Happening? A lot, that’s what! by Sydney Stone November and December are busy months around this “quiet” little Ozarks town. good song selection and arrangements … and the costumes! Some of you think, “I had bell bottoms that wide, too.” Wonderful songs from the 60’s and some video clips of historic events make it an entertaining and well-rounded show. Great Christmas shows! The Andy Williams Christmas Show is legendary. Variety acts and other entertainers like Bob Anderson, Dean Church and The Warnocks, make the show reminiscent of his television Christmas shows. Mel Tillis & Family are at the Tri-Lakes Center with their Christmas show. Great music and a lot of fun! Mel is a good storyteller, very funny. His new comedy album You Ain’t Gonna Believe This debuted at #1 on the Billboard Comedy Chart recently. Santa joins Tony Orlando and The Lennon Sisters at the Welk Resort Theatre. Lots of good Christmas shopping while you’re in town. Check out Linda’s article on the Branson Craft Mall, lots of treasures there. The Grand Village, Quilts & Quilts Country Store, and don’t forget the gift shops at the
You need to keep your strength up for all this fun and adventure. Dobyn’s Dining Room at the Keeter Center is a beautiful and delicious experience. Students there at The College of the Ozarks make a big contribution to lunch and dinner: running the mill, the dairy, and working in the kitchen and dining room. Chef Robert Stricklin is an assistant professor of Culinary Arts there and recently won second place in a culinary competition at the American Culinary Federation Convention. Other local favorites are Chateau on the Lake, great food with a great view; Rocky’s Italian Restaurant downtown, a Branson original; Moon River Grill next door to the theater; Vasken’s Deli and their marvelous Mediterranean menu, on Hwy. 248. That’s all for now, just the tip of the iceberg. I wish you and yours blessed and happy holidays. Enjoy your time in Branson!

Christmas shopping alert! Branson Craft Mall
said, “That guy is cool!” Near the front of the Mall, Nan has an endless variety of shirts, tops and jackets at Nan’s Classic Creations. Ladies LOVE the appliquéd shirts and matching tank tops, the rhinestone knit tops and jackets. She can customize something for you while you wait. Great gift ideas, too. A friend gave me one, “Age Gets Better With Wine!” There are countless designs and options. Have Nan fashion something for you.
By Linda Burlingame The holiday season is one of the best times of the year to go shopping ~ as if you need a reason! Branson Craft Mall has treasures and treats that will entice and entertain everyone. New artist: Juanita Herrell’s mosaic work is the newest art represented at Branson Craft Mall. Juanita is self-taught and her work is beautifully unique. She uses no commercial tiles. Each piece is cut by hand, then fired and glazed: no broken pieces or rough edges. Her art is astonishing and her technique has been published and written about. She is a member of The Best of Missouri Hands, the Missouri Artisan Association. Herrell says, “I like to think I make art with a meaning.” She truly does. Her Seven Days of Creation is marvelous, seven gorgeous panels; see it at the Branson Craft Mall. (My favorite is the Fourth Day!) There are Seven Days cards and bookmarks, too. The Hillbilly Nut & Fruit area of Branson Craft Mall has really expanded. My grandchildren and I had a yummy time! There’s a lot to sample, from Yogurt Covered Cranberries to coffees and fudge. The kids loved the Chocolate Rocks; they look exactly like pretty rocks. But the lightly crunchy exterior covers creamy chocolate. Cool.
There are French Burnt Peanuts, Toasted Corn, Rainbow Coconut slices (remember those!), Cashew Brittle, Chocolate Raisins and Granny’s Favorites include Honey BBQ Sauce, Hickory BBQ Sauce, Apple Butter, Red and Black Raspberry Jam, Elderberry Jam, Pappy’s Sassafras Tea (smells heavenly). What a variety! There are Post Familie Juices; Ozark Mountain Coffee Co. has everything from “Jamaican Me Crazy” flavor to “Marshmallow Nut Crème” to “B-52. “ I’m guessing that’s a strong brew. Old John’s Woodshed is around the next aisle. Paul has a totally “hands-on store!” All kinds of gadgets and gizmos; he tells folks, “Feel free to kick the tires and test drive anything; keys are in the ignition and there’s no speed limit!” He loves showing “kids of all ages” his toys, games and gadgets; he had my 13 y/o granddaughter and 8 y/o grandson laughing and thoroughly entertained. When we left Dillon
By the front door, Larry King, a silver and goldsmith, creates beautiful jewelry. He does “lost wax” castings; there are remarkable wildlife pieces — it’s amazing to watch him work. He does the most
detailed coin piercing. Lovely gift ideas, or something for yourself! The 16,000 sq. ft. facility is home to pottery, leather work, potato bags, brass engravings, musical instruments, clever signs, Christmas things, handbags, and hundreds of other gifts and accessories. Sit a spell by the Pickin’ Porch; you might find Richard, Art, Mark, any number of musicians playing for your enjoyment … and theirs. They love what they do! It’s good music and a lot of fun. Everyone loves the Branson Craft Mall. And remember Paul’s Husband and Baby Sitting Service back at the Woodshed! Have fun!

The Jim Stafford Family Christmas By Linda Burlingame
Jim and Ann Stafford and their teenagers Shea and G.G. invite us home with them for Christmas fun and celebration during the second half of the show. The Christmas segment is always a careful blend of comedy, music and poignant
reminders of what Christmas truly means. Ann does A Solitary Life, a thought-provoking history of Jesus life. And she has a touching and heart-felt prayer for the audience. On a lighter note, Jim and his “buddy” Scrooge have a great 3-D production. Jim’s comic timing is perfection; he has practiced it just like he practices guitar. Jim is not just a come-
The Shepherd of the Hills Gazette dian who plays the guitar; he is extremely talented. I remember several years ago getting to listen in on a jam session with Jim, Roy Clark, Glen Campbell and others. Wow. Wish you could have been there! Jim has told me, “I’ve been making a living with my guitar since I was 16.” On another musical note, Lauren Heavner joins the cast for the Christmas show. She is an extraordinary vocalist. Her rendition of O Holy Night sends shivers up your spine! You’ll get to hear other favorite Christmas songs, too. Shea and G.G. play a wide variety of instruments. They have been on stage since they were babies and are now talented, seasoned per-
formers! Jim Stafford is a creative, serious, focused artist/entertainer. Serious, you say? Like all good artists or athletes, Jim makes it look smooth and easy. Yet there are years of work and practice behind his seamless performances. Jim still practices the guitar, as every good musician does and he practices his comedy. Jim says when he started doing comedy, he put up mirrors all around the room and practiced in front of them. He perfected his expressions and timing: how long to pause before delivering the next line; how long to maintain eye contact; is it just a nod of the head or a body turn … a myriad of emotions and tiny motions

make all the difference. I have been seeing Jim’s show here in Branson since 1990. It’s fun every time; the audience is different, Jim’s reactions are different — it’s never the same show twice!
Jim’s new CD, A Guitar for Christmas, is out now. It’s so good, a perfect gift for yourself and your friends, just like seeing The Jim Stafford Christmas Show!

Veterans Memorial Museum Celebrating 10 Years of Saluting our Veterans! by Linda Burlingame
“Honoring those who served,” Veterans Memorial Museum in Branson honors veterans of WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf War; all major battles and campaigns are recognized. Veterans Homecoming Week in Branson, Nov. 5-11, is an especially good time to visit the Museum. There will be book signings all week; Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. Boy Scout Troop 2001 will do a flag retirement ceremony, an outdoor, free event. General Tommy Franks Traveling Museum
will be there Nov. 6 & 7 and is free to the public. Also outside the Museum are two new sculptures by Hoppe, including a 12-man statue. The Veterans Memorial Museum is one of two Veterans Registry Locations. Veterans can also register at Factory Merchants Mall. Old and young alike are
intrigued by the thought-provoking collection at the Museum. I’m touched by the letters, posters, things showing the love and support of everyone back here at home. The Museum is an extraordinary and fascinating look at our nation’s history, celebrating Veterans all year long!
Fred Hoppe, Jr., creator and owner of the Museum, is a sculptor whose work is known and respected worldwide. Outside the museum are two of his new pieces, including a 12-man statue. One of his most impressive works is inside the Museum, an amazing piece depicting 50 life-sized soldiers storming a beach. Each soldier is modeled from a real-life combat veteran, one from each of the 50 states. The piece is 70 feet long, the world’s largest bronze memorial sculpture! The lead soldier is modeled on the late Fred Hoppe, Sr., one of the most decorated combat Veterans of World War II, a fact Hoppe did not know until shortly before his father’s death. Hoppe created the museum because of his father, who told him, “I’m no hero; the real heroes never came home.”
Nov/Dec 2010 Edition Page 9
The Shepherd of the Hills Gazette In the Museum Hoppe has assembled an amazing collection of more than 2000 pieces of sculpture, art, weapons, uniforms, medals, motorcycles — memorabilia including letters, photographs and posters. The walls of the WWII Hall are covered with the names of more than 400,000 men and women who died for our freedom in that war. There is a complete list of men and women killed in Korea, Vietnam
and during Desert Storm and other conflicts of the 20th Century. Veterans always get an admission discount. The Veterans Memorial Museum is on Hwy. 76 east of Dixie Stampede. You can’t miss it— there is a World War II P-51 Mustang Fighter plane standing guard outside!

This Tine of Year in the Ozarks By Dirk Myers As the weather starts to change in the Ozarks you can feel the atmosphere in the air change with the temperature. As the leaves change in the trees it seems like it builds a sense of anticipation that Christmas and all
the beauty that it brings to this area is soon to appear. If you have had an opportunity to see fall in the Ozarks you know that the colors are beautiful in mid to late October. As Nove mbe r approaches the leaves fall away

The trail will take you by the Showboat Branson Belle where you can enjoy a wonderful Dinner Cruise, and it also takes you through Table Rock State Park which offers many additional recreation opportunities. Dogwood Canyon Nature Park The roundtrip paved trail covers 6 miles and is relatively level. It guides you past beautiful limestone bluffs and tumbling waterfalls, over bridges formed of native stone or hand-crafted of wrought
iron, and even a covered bridge of Amish construction. The beautiful rainbow trout swim in clear springfed waters, easily visible as you pass by. It is a wilderness park and you may expect to see a variety of native wildlife, your best chance being earlier in the morning. Allow plenty of time to absorb the beauty that surrounds you at any season of the year.

Paul Revere & the Raiders … working for Veterans!
Listen, rock ‘n’ roll fans, and you will hear, of the inspiring ride of our Paul Revere. by Linda Burlingame Paul Revere & the Raiders will be doing a Rockin’ Christmas Show at Moon River Theatre through Dec. 11. This is the first year they’ve done a Christmas show; you don’t want to miss it! They even have a new Rockin’ Christmas album and another new live album. Before I brag more on their show, their 23 consecutive hits on the Billboard Charts (they’ve been together since 1958!) … I’ll tell you another story.
The Shepherd of the Hills Gazette
When I first interviewed Paul a few years ago, he was quick to say he’d like to “go beyond the standard rock ‘n’ roll interview.” He was very serious, completely reversed from the wacky, wild, wonderful performer I had just watched on stage. Their show delights audiences with their classic hits as well as hilarious hijinks and antics! Paul talked about the Ride to the Wall Foundation he established in the spring of 2001, a non-profit that makes funds available to various approved veterans’ outreach programs. It is funded by the sale of Volumes 1 and 2 of Ride to the Wall CD’s, the Operation Thanksgiving DVD, other licensed merchandise, and sponsorships from national businesses. Both are
available at their show here. Ride to the Wall Volume 1 includes songs written by combat veterans; Volume 2 is Vietnam era rock ‘n’ roll with special guest stars. Of his work on this Paul says, “I could never not do it!” When they make guest appearances in other cities, local veterans sell the merchandise; monies stay
in that area. Paul smiles again, “It’s an honor to be able to meet our veterans and give ‘em a hug!” He is very proud of the band’s contribution and support, too.
Paul is from Idaho; in 2004 then-Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne called to ask if Paul and the Raiders could come to Alexandria, Louisiana, on Thanksgiving, to give a concert for an Idaho National Guard unit that was deploying out of Alexandria. The Operation
The Shepherd of the Hills Gazette
Thanksgiving DVD is a film of that event: boarding the National Guard C-130 troop carrier in Boise, setting up for the concert, Thanksgiving dinner … everyone standing by the plane in pre-dawn light as the 116th Brigade Combat Team, with units from 26 states, flew off for Kuwait, and eventually Iraq. It’s a remarkable film. A free concert for 6000 participants and members of the 116th! Paul Revere & the Raiders songs are classics. Seeing them live is electrifying! I love Paul’s great stories, too. Do you know which hits he wrote? Do you know what Hostess Twinkies have to do with his show? Have you ever seen a grown man in tights drive a teeny tiny car adorned with Christmas lights? Louie, Louie; Indian Reservation; Steppin’ Out;

USA Today says, “The Show Owns the Title of World’s Largest Performing Family!” While the Hughes Brothers Christmas Show boasts one of the largest casts in Branson… over 90% of which are family…the size of the on-stage family isn’t what makes this such a memorable Christmas show. It’s the astonishing scope of entertainment and talent presented for your enjoyment! From their spine tingling harmonies to the amazing production that fills the stage the Hughes Brothers – Marty, Jason, Adam, Ryan, and Andy – move your feet, your hands, and your heart. White House Theatre Chun Ye – The Legend of Kung Fu By Dirk Myers
Dinner and a show in Branson has become a exotic occasion since the arrival of Chun Ye, The Legend of Kung Fu to the White House Theatre. That’s right China has taken over the White House in – not in Washington DC, but in Branson, Missouri. The 57,00 square foot theater was purchased by a Chinese company to feature this production. Many of the performers also performed this feature presentation in the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The Legend of Kung Fu has been performed more than 3000 times worldwide and this is the first time a theater has been purchased outside
of China for such a showcase. Precision acrobatics, modern dance, and original music help tell the story of a young boy pursuing spiritual and physical harmony. With a cast of 65 performers, it is one of the largest theatrical productions in Branson, immersing audiences in magnificent scenery, lighting, sound and special effects as the tale unfolds. This show that has made trips throughout the globe has come to Branson as an amazing display of Martial Arts set to dance and acrobatics. From 2004 to present the show has been seen in China, Vancouver, London, Moscow, and Reno. Now, those who visit Branson have the opportunity to enjoy this breath-taking spectacle of
Nov/Dec 2010 Edition Page 19 Chinese artistry.

H o l l y w o o d Entertainment Center Have fun with the stars! by Linda Burlingame
The Hollywood Entertainment Center is an amazing attraction with everything from astonishingly lifelike wax figures to a maze of mirrors, 5-D shooting gallery, to the great new Shoot for the Stars mini 18-hole golf course!
The Shepherd of the Hills Gazette it. Will you be the “Chosen One” to free Hannah from Witch Hetty’s evil spell?
Recently my son and his family joined me for all the adventure. I thought we’d never get through the Museum — they were amazed at each figure and display, taking pictures with every “star.” The figures are amazingly lifelike, uncanny actually.
The Castle of Chaos 5-D shooting gallery is fun and not too wild — I did fine! This adventure takes you into “the tortured world of 1920s horror film star Carli Winepeg.”
“Dorothy” greets you as you enter; she’s across from “Forest Gump,” seated on the park bench with his box of chocolates. Matt Damon from The Bourne Identity; I Dream of Jeannie’s Barbara Eden (unbelievably
good); “Rhett and Scarlett” … all are incredible! One of my favorite movie scenes is Guns of Navarone. You’ll see a lot of your favorites, too. The accompanying information is full of facts, scoops and fun trivia. Did you know Vincent “horror movies” Price was superstitious? How did he ward it off? Interesting film clips of the making of Pirates of the Caribbean highlight that exhibition. “Captain Jack Sparrow” is a remarkable (I’m running out of adjectives!) likeness. The first time I went through Hannah’s Maze of Mirrors, I came out the same way I came in. Oops! This time with the help of my granddaughter we made
Next we relaxed and enjoyed a round of mini golf at the new Shoot for the Stars. Each hole is entertaining (and clever!); the course takes you through the adventure of becoming a star. From Being Discovered (and getting your agent) on the first hole, to Audition Day, Wrap Party, Movie Premiere, to Oscar Night, Handprints & Footprints at 17 to the final Star Ceremony at the 18th hole, it’s fun and fact-filled. Interesting trivia accompanies each hole. Do you know how many times George Clooney auditioned for the role of J.D. in Thelma and Louise? Who finally got the role? Did you know Gene Autry won Oscars in all
The Shepherd of the Hills Gazette five categories for film, TV, radio, recording and live theater?! And did I tell you about the FABULOUS gift shop? Talk about gifts for everyone on your list! Hollywood Entertainment Center is on Hwy. 76; you can’t miss it. Just look for King Kong … and what’s that he’s holding, an airplane?!
