sam. program. Jan / Feb / Mar 2017
welcome to 2017. We are delighted to share with you the first three months of Shepparton Art Museum’s (SAM) 2017 exhibition program. Shepparton is a creative community with many active participants. SAM’s curatorial program engages with its local context while exploring global contemporary ideas. The art museum is noted for its ceramics collection, one of the most significant in regional Australia. It also has important collections of Indigenous art, signature historic paintings by leading Australian artists, and a growing collection of contemporary art.
tracey moffatt & gary hillberg featuring montages: The Full Cut 1999 - 2015 28 January to 19 March 2017 Official opening Saturday 4 Feb 2017, 4 to 6pm Opening remarks by Professor Charles Green, Art History, School of Culture and Communication, The University of Melbourne
SAM’s program has been designed to foster a strong sense of engagement, interest, learning and fun for visitors and local audiences.
SAM is delighted to present the collaborative work of Tracey Moffatt and Gary Hillberg in the touring exhibition Montages: The Full Cut, 1999 – 2015.
Some of our highlights include the launch of our publication in March, celebrating 80 Years of SAM – The Collection. Look out for our ever successful Summer Holiday Program, along with children, family and adult activities including Art For Small Hands, SAM Out Late! or the free self-guided Art Passport activity. There are practical workshops, where all can learn through making and doing. All skill levels welcome!
This exhibition presents eight montage films that reflect on cinema and the cinematic form. Using an extensive collection of iconic Hollywood films, telemovies and arthouse cinema, Montages: The Full Cut, 1999 – 2015 invents new fictions and plays with narrative and character conventions to create highly charged compositions on themes such as love, art, revolution and destruction.
In January, we also host the Architectural Design Competition for the new SAM, commencing 16 January to 5 February. We encourage all to come and get involved and have their say. Arts and culture plays an important role in any rich and vibrant community. There are many ways to get involved and actively support SAM. From volunteering, becoming a Friend or supporting the work of the SAM Foundation, to simply enjoying our programs and exhibitions.
In addition, SAM will present Moffatt’s First Jobs Series, 2008. Digitally inserting her likeness into these photographs, Moffatt humorously reminds us of our own first job experiences. #TraceyMoffatt #GaryHillberg @mgnsw @artspacesydney @sam_shepparton

80/80. Eighty Years of SAM The Collection Now showing until February 2018 This exhibition has been developed around a number of themes, including place, identity and ceramics. Works featured include colonial images from Shepparton’s own past, to contemporary artists’ responses to country and place. Explorations of identity similarly range from academy portraiture traditions John Longstaff and others, to more contemporary examinations of a culturally diverse country that is part of a globalized world. The exhibition also features key works from SAM’s marvelous ceramics collection. 80/80 enables us to showcase some of the significant works and delightful treasures in SAM’s now sizeable collection, and reveal some of the trends that have emerged over its 80 year history. 80 Years of the SAM Collection Celebration With Publication Launch
