New Indigenous Photomedia 26 August to 29 October 2017 Michael Aird, Tony Albert, Brook Andrew, Ali G. Baker, Daniel Boyd, Megan Cope, Brenda L. Croft, Nici Cumpston, Robert Fielding, Nicole Foreshew, Ricky Maynard, Danie Mellor, Steaphan Paton, Damien Shen, Darren Siwes, Christian Thompson, Warwick Thornton, James Tylor, and Jason Wing. This exhibition creates an experience of photomedia and Indigeneity that is physical, embodied and thought-provoking. It features work made since 2011 from across the country and brings together some of Australia's most critically acclaimed artists, whose careers stretch back decades, with some of our most exciting emerging talent. The foundations of contemporary Indigenous photography were laid in the late 1980s with a generation of politicised and provocative artists who documented their experiences around the events of the Bicentennial marking 200 years of European settlement. The last 30 years has seen its maturation and the emergence of artists who engage critically, thoughtfully, sometimes forcefully, with the present and the past. They decide how they negotiate their way in the world, making work which reflects the challenging, hybrid nature of contemporary society. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander audiences are advised that this exhibition may contain images and voices of people who have since passed away. A National Gallery of Australia exhibition.

Flower Frogs, Blips'n Blobs Clay Workshop

Looking to rocks, frogs and flowers, explore pinching and coiling techniques to build small vessels, known as flower frogs and bud vases. These vessels are great to display small flowers, nice-smelling herbs and even weeds. Participants will get to take home their vessel at a later date after it is fired.

Mimicry and Resistance 11 November 2017 to 14 January 2018 Arthur Merric Boyd / Neil Douglas, Michael Candy, Maria Fernanda Cardoso, Percy Grainger and Burnett Cross, Yuki Kihara, The Kingpins, LOUD + SOFT (Julian Day and Luke Jaaniste), FrĂŠdĂŠric Nauczyciel, Soda Jerk vs The Avalanches, Super Critical Mass, Christian Thompson, and Jemima Wyman. This exhibition explores ideas around mimicry and impersonation, re-performance or reiteration, as artists and collectives expand on the notion of the cover version and its subversive potential within the digital age. Cover Versions: Mimicry and Resistance quotes from the histories of music, popular culture and the internet, ethnography and the natural world. This is expressed through a range of mediums that include sound art and instrumentation, video, photography, installation and robotics. In music, the cover version is realised as the reperformance, sampling or development of an existing piece, creating an expanded version or new original. In the natural world, animals use mimicry as a mode of camouflage for the purposes of survival, while humans employ it for social commentary or political subversion. In contemporary net culture and social media this is signalled by the repost, retweet or meme: in homage or critique, or towards the construction of identity. Mimicry has been equated with camouflage but also like holding up a mirror. Through the artifice of their construction, these works reveal something about the nature of our times. The Sidney Myer Fund Australian Ceramic Award celebrates and promotes contemporary Australian artists working in the ceramic medium. This year’s shortlisted artists include Glenn Barkley, Karen Black, Laith McGregor, Jenny Orchard and Yasmin Smith.
This exhibition has been developed around a number of themes, including place, identity and ceramics. Works featured include colonial images from Shepparton’s own past, to contemporary artists’ responses to country and place. Explorations of identity similarly range from academy portraiture traditions of John Longstaff and others, to more contemporary examinations of a culturally diverse country that is part of a globalized world.
The $50,000 recipient for 2017 is Jenny Orchard for her work The Imagined Possibility of Unity, 2017. Award co-ordinator: Anna Briers Major Partner

These brightly coloured jugs, flasks, vases and teapots, have been crafted largely by commercial manufacturers for utilitarian purposes and reflect the diversity of early 20th century commerical ware.

sam education. Each semester, education tours and trails focus on key artworks from the Collection and new exhibitions at SAM. Activities are designed to explore different approaches to artmaking and to develop an understanding of Australian ceramics, art history and contemporary art. Suitable for Early Years learning, Victorian Curriculum F-10 and VCE Studies. Resources are available on our website or by contacting SAM education staff. SAM Scholars Student Program Designed specifically for senior students who are studying VCE Studio Arts, or Art and are keenly interested in pursuing Arts as a pathway option. This program currently hosts 13 students who work closely with SAM staff, visiting artists and associate guests. This program operates as an after school program with students participating in fortnightly classes for the duration of the school year. Let’s Talk: Art and Industry Contexts A tour designed specifically to complement VCE Studio Arts studies. Using the permanent Collection and our temporary exhibitions, students will learn about the role of the museum, discuss conservation methods and analyse curated exhibition spaces. Abigail Housen and renowned museum educator Philip Yenawine, Visual Thinking Strategies empowers students to discuss art based on what they can see in an artwork through careful, close looking and questioning. Moving forward, these important local shows will shift to April, to better support local VCE students by coinciding with the timing of other VCE exhibitions around Victoria.
