welcome to sam. This year, Shepparton Art Museum is featuring two major new collection exhibitions. Drawn largely from recent acquisitions, these works are being presented for the first time at SAM. Intimate Realities showcases a selection of sculptural works by leading Australian artists whose works engage, intrigue, and inspire through quiet contemplation, references to the body, musical refrain, and sheer enjoyment of materials. Ever-present is an exciting exhibition of historic and contemporary works by Indigenous artists, exploring the many ways that Country is explored and revealed through painting, ceramics and the beauty of every-day objects. Make sure that you take a good look at our education and public program offerings. A great way to get involved, meet new friends, and develop new skills. We've got a wide range of programs suited to kids, teens, and adults; from clay-making to talks and evening courses to social gatherings with a focus on art.
SAM’s Education Lab is a new initiative taking place from late March to mid-May, where students of all ages can work with artist Masato Takasaka to contribute to an ever-evolving exhibition over six weeks. The Education Lab coincides with other local community favourites: SAM Local Spotlight, celebrating home grown creativity; and Best of Friends, which invites all members of the Friends of SAM to show their work inside the museum. Come on your own, or with friends. SAM is a place for all. We look forward to seeing you soon and encourage you to get involved, engaged and inspired, and just have fun. soft core. 27 January to 18 March 2018 SAM is pleased to present Soft Core, an exhibition of newly commissioned and recent work by 12 Australian and International artists whose work questions the fluctuating meaning of softness. From large-scale inflatables to forms made from soft materials to materials that simply look soft, these artists are making works that demand attention. The materials in this exhibition encompass air, inflatable nylon, unfired clay and plastic bags – materials that have been used for their versatility and their mutability between function and emotion. Some of the works require activation – such as electricity or inflation to become whole while others inhabit their softness quietly. In the 20th century, artists began to disassemble the notion of traditional sculpture by adding and subtracting constructions, incorporating found objects and designating everyday items as art. These adaptive and divergent methods of form making continue today in a generation of artists who define sculpture in the negative condition: not bronze, not stone, not the macho force of the blast furnace. Artists: Tully Arnot, Mikala Dwyer, Tully Moore, Tony Oursler, Michael Parekowhai, Patricia Piccinini, Todd Robinson, Koji Ryui, Kathy Temin, Louise Weaver, Simon Yates and Paul Yore. Curator: Micheal Do.
See SAM’s website for details of special events inspired by Soft Core, including a weekend of craft for families, a curatorial floor talk by Micheal Do, and ceramic and weaving workshops for adults. Opening weekend will feature a special participatory performance by David Cross.
An exhibition curated by Micheal Do, in conjunction with Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and toured by Museums & Galleries of NSW. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government's Visions of Australia program.

recent works from the sam. collection.
Intimate Realities 3 March 2018 to April 2019 Intimate Realities showcases recent works from the SAM Collection. This exhibition features sculpture, video, photography, printmaking, painting and ceramics by leading contemporary artists, presented in a way that invites visitors to look more closely. Many of the works selected have fluid, organic shapes. Many encourage meditation and contemplation. Sometimes, they are accompanied by a musical refrain, engaging several of our senses at once. Each of the works respond to our natural world. Benjamin Armstrong’s work looks like an oversized eyeball or a sea creature from the deep. Naomi Eller’s busts rethink the idea of making a portrait through sculpture. Heather B. Swann’s female form glistens with a marble-dust finish. Juz Kitson’s riotous wall-sculpture of antlers, hair and body parts is a contemporary take on the ‘tondo’, or circular painting, popularised by Michelangelo and others in the 16th century Italian Renaissance. The selection of materials is central to the production of art. Many of Kitson’s ceramic parts are manufactured in China with internationally renowned Chinese ceramics factories. Many of the artists have collaborated with musicologists and musicians to create evocative soundscapes that can haunt us for days. Intimate Realities rewards us with a series of intimate moments that we can carry with us as we go about the rest of our daily lives. Featuring: Benjamin Armstrong, Nici Cumpston, Pat Brassington, Naomi Eller, Michal Fargo, Sam Jinks, Juz Kitson, Tracey Moffatt, John Perceval, Sally Ross, Heather B. Swann, Angela and Hossein Valamanesh, Paul Wood and more.

Ever-present 3 March 2018 to April 2019 This exhibition speaks to the spirit of Country, to the myriad of ways it permeates life, informs lore, traditions and ceremonies. It explores the interdependence of land and peoples, revealing the resilience and continuity of Indigenous culture since time immemorial. Showcasing historic works from the SAM Collection alongside recent acquisitions, Ever-present spans a variety of media: from painting and ceramics to basket-making. Irrespective of the artists’ Country or approach, each work impresses a deep knowing and sense of belonging. Ever-present reveals a number of interwoven themes. Angelina George and Albert Namatjira reveal the interconnectedness of spirit and Country. Julie Dowling depicts matriarchal kinships and intergenerational knowledge; while Angelina Ngal celebrates sustenance and survival through representations of bush tucker. Vera Cooper’s ceramic egg-form alludes to the life-cycles of birth, death and re-birth, echoed by the Tunga (bark baskets) from the Tiwi Islands. Mapping and Dreaming are explored by the Western Desert painters such as Ronnie Tjampitjinpa. Danie Mellor takes a contemporary approach to traditional forms, reinterpreting boomerangs and shields which he instead casts from reclaimed steel shipping trunks. Each of these works evoke journeys, migration and displacement, reconciling the past while sustaining connectedness into the future. Featuring: Lorraine Babui, Landara Benjamin, Shauna Colin, Vera Cooper, Julie Dowling, Walter Ebatarinja, Tanya Flower, Sally Gabori, Angelina George, Rupert Jack, Mary Jo Kantilla, Danie Mellor, Mary Milgurr, Richard Moketarinja, the Hermannsburg Potters, Albert Namatjira, Nancy Naninurra, Angelina Ngal, Tiger Palpatja, Edwin Pareroultja, Dr Gloria Thanacoupie (Thanakupi), Mary Tjaatju, Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, Long Tom Tjapanangka and more.

29 March to 13 May 2018
Showcase is a unique opportunity for collectors and craft lovers to acquire work from established and emerging contemporary artists, as all pieces are available for purchase at the SAM shop.
SAM goes local in March. During this time we’ll be showcasing artistic practice from the region with three exhibitions: SAM Local Spotlight; Best of Friends; and SAM Education Lab. Local artists are encouraged to share their creativity and get involved! #SAMLocal
SAM Local Spotlight This year’s SAM Local Spotlight artists are Luke Pither and Kate Hill. Profiling the work of local artists with a solo show, the aim of this exhibition is to encourage, stimulate and promote local and regional cultural activities as part of SAM’s annual program. This opportunity enables the recipients to gain professional experience working with SAM's team across curatorial, marketing and communications, registration, education and public programs and more.
Best of Friends Best of Friends is an open access exhibition and all Friends of SAM are encouraged to submit work. The exhibition’s purpose is to open a window onto the creative practice of many artists working in a range of media in the Goulburn Valley. It's a great way to see what other people are making and gain insights into the regional arts sector. Visit SAM's website for more information and download an application form.

sam education. Education Lab 29 March to 13 May 2018 SAM’s Education Lab will be an evolving exhibition process that will see a range of schools and educational groups work with Masato Takasaka to transform one of SAM’s gallery spaces into a large scale architectural installation. Masato Takasaka is a Melbourne-based, contemporary artist, who likes to think about his studio practice in musical terms. Describing his aesthetic as an iPod Shuffle on endless repeat, Takasaka replays the greatest hits of 20th century avant-garde art, with references to Constructivism, Dada, Pop and Minimalism alongside the back catalogue of his own greatest hits. Primarily working with found objects and materials to construct his gallery-based installations, art and design history collide in Takasaka’s mini-cities. Described as “technocontemporary”, the exuberant chaos of his sculptural practice involves a process of working and re-working everyday materials in inventive ways to make something new. Schools are encouraged to book their groups in early to participate in this exciting artmaking and exhibition opportunity. Contact SAM Visual Arts Educator, Catherine Read to discuss booking in your school to participate.
